Thanks Everyone, We’re Listening

I was going to continue to chime in on the comments thread but it occurred to me that most of you would miss this as there were more than 500 comments on that first post, so allow me to simply extend an official thanks to everyone here and outside this blog who have taken the time to share their feedback and support for this effort over the last 24 hours. This is going to be a great and wild ride.

Kotaku, VH1, LevelUp, Joystiq, Destructoid, and 1Up, we appreciate the link love, guys. Likewise, GameCovered, TrueGameHeadz, GamingBits, and Opposable Thumbs, we heard you too and we’ll try to address some of your questions (and expectations) over the next few weeks. And please, Andrew, we read your stuff religiously; the last thing we want to do is to compete with your blog. We even got an official welcome from our industry-friend the Major, which we appreciate.

I’m going to get out of the way now and let others here share their posts, but please continue to comment and email us with your thoughts, cares and concerns. We’re reading everything (cough, korlithiel) and trying to respond to as much as we can (cough, whatthegeek), so bear with us. There’s much more to come….

  • It’s funny. I don’t own a PlayStation 3. I don’t plan on owning one. I own an Xbox 360, a Wii, a PSP, a PS2, a PS1, a Genesis, both SNES and NES, the list goes on… I basically own everything that -isn’t- relevant to this blog. Well, scratching the PSP, but I doubt that’s Sony biggest focus right now ;)

Sony was in need of a blog like this. It’s slick, it’s professional, and the posts don’t sound like corporate mumbo jumbo I’m too used to hearing as a gamer. Congratulations on this fine piece of internet space :D

Now convince me to buy a PlayStation 3. xD

  • Well let’s see in the next few months now this whole blog thing works out and how much Sony is willing to hear from our whining.

Anyways, I wish you guys luck and lets go to this till the end!

  • Congrats on getting a blog Sony. Microsoft has blogging for years, and honestly, its their connection the consumers that has made me a huge Xbox 360 fan.

I never liked Sony because it has always seemed like such a faceless, careless, and cold company. Not something I like to give money to.

Hopefully this blog will show me the personable side of Sony that i’ve always wanted to see. PLEASE keep the posts in the mood of a gamer, not a marketer. Keep it real, and make sure you are always your biggest critic. If the community is mad about something, be sure address the issue honestly and openly. Don’t hide from the tough questions. That shows honesty and integrity if you can point

Lastly, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE go on Major Nelson’s podcast, or make your own podcast and invite him. He has been wanting to talk to you guys for forever, and it shows weakness that you guys have not yet taken him up on his offer. Don’t be scared, just do it. If you can do that, I will respect Sony a lot more, and maybe even buy a PS3.

  • What better a way to rep your product than by going on the show of your biggest competition? Major Nelson has always had utmost respect for the work you guys do at SCEA. You owe it to the gaming community, contact Major Nelson and get on his next podcast.

  • It’s nice to see that you have finally gotten this blog online. I finally have a place to discuss the PS3 and other Sony gaming products without having to sift through all the “next gen war” fodder on most other sites. Now give us some good news!

  • Dinge, die wir sicherlich brauchen | Wissen belastet

  • Hi,I hope you will communicate about the game that are coming ,like Heavenly Sword,Lair and Killzone2…And make new TV COMMERCIALS,because,THIS IS LIVING sucks..
    @Dinge:Please,speak english…

  • The Team Is Actually Listening To The Many Blogs I Read..

I Feel A Little Scared Of Big Brother Watching..

oh, Just Kiddin’, Glad To Hear That We Can Now Finally Really Talk With The Guys Within Sony’s Game Division..

    And While You’re Listening:
Bring Back ‘EyeToy’ Games We Missed From The UK Onto Our U.S. PS2s,
Mention About When To Expect The PSP Camera/GPS Attatchments,
And Talk A Bit More On The PlayStation Eye!

(you can see i have a thing about cameras..)

  • “Hi Sony, we have a lot to catch up on!”

  • Wouldnt it be nice if Sony had a podcast? Anyways, I love this idea of Sony having an official blog. Now they will know what are the fan’s concerns

  • What’s up with Africa? How come there aren’t new news about it?

  • OMG this blog is even better than i thought. Keep up the good work and the frequent updates.

  • Jetpack Ninja Dinosaur

I’ve been playing the playstion since Gex 2 and I remember the original Armored Core and Siphon Filter like a fond memory.

Just like in the past I’ll be expecting great new game series to come out of seemingly nowhere.

Thats what Playstation has over all else. The promice of new and great new games. Not just the same old crap.

I’m planning on getting a PS3 as soon as i can and will be getting Resistance, Armored Core 4 and i’m gonna rent Sonic the Hedgehog to see if its as bad as ppl are making it out to be (i’m a huge sonic fan and am one of the few ppl that enjoyed Sonic Heroes so i’m sure i’ll like it)

The new games coming out this fall will be awesome and will just flow from there.

Heres just showing my support and a bit of love.

  • I’d love to hear when the PSP’s GPS is coming out in Europe.

  • Dear Sony,

I Love the PS3 and PSP, i am glad you people finnaly have a blog where the comman man can post his idea’s and feelings about your consoles and software.

Here are my suggestions of what i think would be a great addition to the PS3.

    1. I would like to be able to browse my LAN like i could in Windows to search for desktops/servers where i store all my movies and my music, the dnas feature, works for now but its far from perfect.

    2. You must support more movie formats, AVI, RM, MOV, WMV and a absolut must have is Divx/Xvid support, it would be nice to be able to play VOB files also.

    3. A lot of people use MSN Messenger to chat, i really miss this one the PS3, webmessengers are not a solution so a port of MSN or a Sony messenger that logs in to your msn account would be great.

    4. The default media player doesnt do it for me, i would like more options, like playlists, and i would like to be able to listen to streaming audio and see streaming video.

    5. XMB ingame, nothing to add to the discussion above.

This was my wish list, i hope that it will be implemented into the PS3 firmware anytime in the near future, it would make my PS3 experience the most ultimate one.

    With kind regards,

    Gertjan Nansink

  • altdelete47@104: It may be a better idea to focus on Home first. And then invite people in the industry (including Major Nelson, if it makes sense) to the patch to talk. We can virtually all party there. People who don’t have PS3s can listen in via podcast or text chat.

  • Awesome job Patrick & crew, this blog is getting alot of info. Really cool that youre keeping people posted :).

  • By the way patrick, The japanese branch has must’ve done something magical just now.

Tekken DR online mode?? FINALLY! :)

Im really looking forward to Tekken 6 & Time Crisis 4 since they are exclusively published by Sony ;).

  • Thank you~~

I have a PS2 and PSP, both of them are wonderful!

Waiting for more in the future!

  • Allmost forgot to add a very important suggestion to my list:

    6. Pre-Paid cards for the playstation store
I dont own a credit card and a lot of other people also, I do not intend to aquire one either, I heard you were allready looking into this issue but i just wan to urge you guys to hurry up because I see a lot of nice content on the store, i got the cash but not the card to buy it!

  • In short: If you make another portable gaming console/hardware (Be it a revised PSP, or a completely new one) I’ll buy it on launch.

  • This is an excellent idea, keep up the good work Sony and I hope you keep this blog updated!!

Now please, give us Aussies some decent content on the Playstation Store!!

  • Be sure to let us know when there’s a game worth buying the console to play. So far eight of my friends have them and one remarked last night that he hasn’t switched it on in weeks. You charge us English folk a lot more for the console than the US and then release it with a load of [DELETED] titles. On top of that it isn’t fully backward compatible. What the hell are you guys trying to acheive? PS3 is a piece of crap. Plain and simple. I hope it goes away and dies quietly.

  • It’s good to see Major plugging the word. ;)

  • Great site!
It’s be great to have an idea of the future plans of the PS3 in respect to media capabilities. As a big user of these capabilities there are a number of areas the unit is lacking.
    1. Music player:
Really needs play lists, I also think the jump to Artist/Album feature on Sony Walkman would be a great inclusion. Also a now playing link as it’s hard to find the playing track when you switch to and from the background process. And a search function!!!
    2. Photo Viewer:
Group by Tag or a playlist function for those of us who like to see events or have hobbies. And a search function!!!
    4. Videos
*cough*codecs*cough* though I’m happy to convert. Also a way to organise videos into folders my list is getting too long.
    5. Other:
Email access if you want me to stop using my PC, or at least getting Hotmail to work in the browser.
    MSN link, in my dreams
Direct type into a web page when using a keyboard. the 3 line pop up is really hard to use for text entry and the Alt+Enter newline is annoying.
PSP WIFI copy, no more wires!

  • Again, I want to welcome Sony to the blogging world. I’ve asked (ok ok, complained) several times on Sony’s “official” (in quotes since they don’t visit their own forum much) forums that Sony were too disconnected from their users.

Microsoft have MANY bloggers. Major Nelson being one, Gamescore, Trixie, Elle, etc also have their own blogs plus they visit the official forums and even act as moderators from time to time.

Now what we need is a podcast and some presence in the forums so we can bring up subjects instead of only reading what they decided we should read…

  • Sans oublier Gameblog.fr bien sûr !
    Good luck ;)

    See Ya !

  • Nice of you to put this blog in and debunk crappy things or announcing new stuff. Thanks for listening in too, it’s appreciated. I love your products, my only rant would be the downloadable contents…. Xbox got those new characters for Marvel Ultimate Alliance and everytime I email someone about that, no one tell me if we’ll get them on PS3. Also, I heard xbox will get episodic downloads for GTA:IV…. yeah, I whine like a kid: “it’s not fair”. Aside from that, you got great stuff coming, Warhawk, Castlevania for the PSP… keep it up people.

  • off to a good start, i would like to see this site become a main location for exclusive news and updates on all things sony

  • Ah yes. Someone else pointed out Pre-Paid PSN network cards. We *REALLY* would like to have such a feature!

  • good to see sony using its fanbase to help its business.

a few things i know i’d love to see from the PS3 since i do use mine as a replacement for my HTPC is:
-Playlist abilities for Music/Videos/Photos (a queue)
-Ability to search Music/Videos/Photos by file name/date/genre/artist/etc; allow us to use our usb keyboards to do this
-in game XMB access and allow us to listen to music from ps3 ingame, check messages, browse sites (sure would be nice to go online while playing say FFXII and check a map to help get through a tight spot)

nonetheless, the recent firmware updates have been golden! just wish i got into the betas.. hehe..

i’ll be reading this blog on a daily basis for sure!

oh yea, bring rumble back; i miss it a ton in my racing games and prefer it over sixaxis controls.

    peace

  • Hey Hey
Obviously I may aswel sign up anyway but im from the United Kingdom and was wondering if theres a EU blog that I dont know about, or if there will be one in the future.
I dont like reading US news because I get all excited and then I find out its only for US.. at least for a while. Kinda not fair really.. Especially when we had to pay more than the US customers!

  • I think it’s great that Sony finally realized they don’t need any fancy marketing campaigns to reach gamers… just a good product for a fair price and an honest message.

  • Hi Patrick

Could you tell us when we are to expect some news about Afrika?

For me it’s one of the most promising new game franchises for the PS3 besides Little Big Planet and anything the ICO Team will do ;-)

It’s good to have some Sony insiders talk to us, after all the negative press coverage you received since the PS3 launch.

    Greetings from Switzerland

    Sidewinder

  • Keep up the good work. One thing that is refreshing on here is the lack of PR speak. You acknowledging that you read the other blogs (everyone knows that the suits at Sony do) is showing that you’re gamers just like we are, and I think that helps. Major Nelson giving you some credit is also nice, maybe you should be on his podcast. Maybe you should start your own podcast… :)

  • This is great! It’s been a struggle finding information on what is happening with the PS3 from reputable sources. I’m glad that there is finally an official source!

I am happy with my PS3, and I think my happiness will increase as more games are released… That being said, I think that some short-term improvements could be made, as well as some long term ones…

    Short Term:

    1. The Playstation Network Store needs to be updated in look and feel. I’ve got a controller with all of these buttons on it, but yet I can only use 3 of them to navigate? Play to the strengths of the controller – use the shoulder buttons to change “pages”, etc. Streamline the download selection system – why do I need to press X, then start, then X to download a free item? Get past the “Mouse-centric” mentality.

    2. More content… I know that the PS3 supports a DRM system that allows time-limited use. Work out an agreement with Sony Music and release a track or two from several “New and Up and Coming” artists each week for _free_ – but time limit it to only being playable for that week, after that week, remove that list (or allow them to be purchased for continued use), and release a new set of tracks. Just 5-10 tracks a week would cause me to go to the store _every_ week. They could even be released 2 a day or some such… This doesn’t require massive “make a new game” level work, and allows some cross-marketing with the Music group. This same theory could be done with the first 10 minutes of a movie or some such…

On the same “More Content” standpoint – it would be _very_ nice if I could have a gametrailers.com like selection of game videos. It was particularly frustrating when I didn’t see any/many of the videos from Gamers Day show up on the store. This was really a lost opportunity to let us early purchasers of the PS3 feel “in the know”. I would _really_ love some exclusive trailers of some of the big games that are coming out – Assassins Creed, Haze, etc.

    3. Keep up the good work on firmware updates. Firmware update 1.8 was great, and I really look forward to what will happen in the future. The firmware updates help me realize how seriously Sony is taking the PS3.

    Long Term…

    1. Continue to enhance the functionality of the PS3. It’s a very powerful machine, give me “toys” to show it off. The “ducks” and “pirate ships” demos looked like great ways to show off the power that could be released in a short to mid-term.

    2. Release more unique packages, like the Stranglehold special edition with the movie on the same disk…

    3. Improve the built-in web browser, or, in my preference, port Firefox over – give us access to all of the great plugins/features that Firefox supports. Unfortunately, the built in browser just doesn’t seem fully up to the task. I attempted to register on this blog and my PS3 crashed! Additionally, I have been unable to post new messages on the forums. (I’m on a PC right now)

Another possibility is to test Sony web sites against the PS3 web browser and verify their interoperability.

    4. Build up a “Your World” application/tool on the XMB that we can configure to show us things like the weather forecast, RSS news feeds, etc. Yes, this could be done in a web browser, but, we’ve got this great High-Definition platform, why limit ourselves to a 2D web presentation? What would be _really _ great is if we could access at least some of this information while still in-game. Every morning I check the weather forecast, as well as the Sony forums and general world news before I leave for work. Give me a compelling reason to use the PS3 to check this. It already boots _much_ faster than my computer…

    5. Encourage all FPS developers to integrate support for a Keyboard/Mouse interface… Let the players choose what they want to use…

  • Nice blog post. I hope this can stay nice and civil. I hope this E3 will be better than the last one.

Or this place will be mayhem. :)

  • Congrats on the blog! Now lets start hearing about some upcoming games and PSN news, and squash all the 2.0 update rumors please!

  • I agree wholeheartedly with Niles Stonne!!

  • To add on to what Niles was saying I would also like to see televised events on the Playstation Network LIVE. Meaning we can log in, click a button and say be able to stream Sony’s E3 press conference.

Maybe also a weekly show could be done and available via download letting us know all that is new and upcoming in the Playstation universe. Sort of like Microsofts news 10 or the 1up show but again just centered on all things playstation. This again would be made available via the PS store.

  • @Niles Stonne

    I completely second that.

With focus on the Firefox port and the ability to build applications for the PS3 like I said before too.

  • Streaming content would be the bee’s knees! lol

  • Yes, mouse support would be great for FPS games, i hope a Counterstrike: Source and Battlefield II port was available :-)

  • Hey Glimmerman, they have the Split Fish FX controller if you want mouse support.

  • Why is my Gravatar not working?? I uploaded on to their site….do I need to add something to my messages? Anyone who has one let me know.

  • I agree with mustaphadamus about E3 and other events Live on PSN. That would be awesome.

  • I’m excited to see what you guys do with this blog. It’ll be nice to see the people, and rationales behind the sometimes crazy, illogical things you guys have done in the past years as a company.

I hope to see this place become a great place where conversations happen. Please don’t just make this another venue for overly polished PR statement.

  • I own a Xbox360 and a Wii, I have looked at picking up a PS3 several times, but when I look at the price of the system, and the games that are out for it now, I just can’t talk myself into putting it on my credit card. Especially when a lot of the games are on all three systems, with the exception of a few (and MGS4 may be great, but not great enough to drop $665 including tax on a PS3) games.

Also, when I look around on the Internet, I see all the negative stuff Sony’s PR guys put out there before the PS3s release. That just doesn’t give me a good feeling about dropping $1k for the system and games.

Now this blog seems like a belated Major Nelson clone … I thought Sony would be addressing issues that people might be concerned about, not another “Me Too” knee-jerk reaction.

I’m disappointed. I had really hoped for more. Maybe later this year?

  • @derrickgott007

Nah i just want to use my Logitech mx1000 mouse and do some serious Headshots in CS:Source :-)

    @Sony
    7. Bring back the rumble function in controllers, i miss it especially in Gran Turismo, i need to feel the curbstones and such.

  • I Just want GPS for Canada, I have a Camera, and all sorts of other things, but GPS seems like a no brainer, just pay the $60/$75 for the hardware. Considering the current prices on other GPS devices, this would be a must have item for me.
