PS3 Firmware Upgrade 1.81 Coming Tomorrow

403 0

Just a quick update: we’ll be making available firmware upgrade 1.81 tomorrow which will fix a few small issues some of you have noticed. Most notably is the RGB Full setting which a few of you wrote in about. In 1.80 we added an option to the XMB under settings allowing you to choose between RGB Full and Limited. Basically if you are connecting your PS3 to your TV using an HDMI cable, and if your TV supports RGB full range, the picture quality may be improved when this option is set to Full. Some of you pointed out that the Full setting would sometimes revert back to Limited and 1.81 will address this issue. Please keep in mind that this setting is only effective when the PS3 is connected to a TV using an HDMI cable. You can download the update tomorrow from PlayStation.com [update: the upgrade is now available, you can download it here] or through your System Update option on the PS3 XMB.

We’re continually evaluating and improving PS2 software compatibility too. Where we can, we’ll look to share similar updates like this on our blog moving forward. Thanks for your ongoing feedback and support!

  • I like the update and particularly that Sony are now dealing with our gripes. I appreciate what Sony are doing and have only 2 gripes:

    1) Why do we not have hardware acceleration from within Linux? If we did we would be able to play videos of any format on the PS3 under Linux … of course they can be streamed using software that converts on the fly but then there is no pause, fast forward or rewind so no chance of a break when watching a movie)

    2) Why not include avi (Xvid / divx) support so that the data would not need to be converted when sending it from a media server?

I know these things will hopefully come in the near future as those two features on their own would make the XBox seem pathetic in comparison.

I think a list of scheduled firmware updates would really help and stop people from complaining.

    Excellent job Sony!

  • good to here

  • yep

  • alright, keep em coming.

  • The 1.80 upgrade added media streaming. However, streaming from WMP 11 only supports certain formats, not xvid/divx, mp4 (aac), dvr-ms, etc. even with the right codecs installed on the PC. The result is too many media-files with incompatible data. PS3 has great potential as media front, keep working on it!

  • Nice update :)

    but…..

sony dudes when are you guys gonna release an official VGA cable? it would benefit alot of us gamers who play games on pc, the xbox360 have it the ps3 should too along with 16:10 ratio which you guys can add on one of the future updates

so please release an official VGA cable sony :)

  • Well the 1.81 disable the whammy bar on the GH controller in GH1, it worked on 1.80 with no problems.

It’s kinda a bummer to see that this firmware didn’t fix a problem, it cause it again to appear.

  • Should there be a clock on the XMB, and while playing Music/Video? I think it would be a nice addition..

  • With firmware 1.81 installed, I had an issue playing Casino Royale on BD. When I loaded the movie into my PS3 and started it from the XMB, my TV (a Samsung L-NS4095D) kept “Searching for Signal” and then reported “No Signal.” This happened with all PS3 settings defaulted. I changed the BD option for 24Hz playback to Off (from Automatic) and the movie then played fine. Note that I’m connected via HDMI.

  • One more thing: If I select “Full Screen” under PS2 Upscaling in the Game Settings menu, I also get the “Searching for Signal,” followed by “No Signal.” Huh? I believe the XMB defaults this option to Normal. I should be able to select “Full Screen,” no?

I’ve got a 1080p TV with HDMI 1.3 connected to a PS3 with HDMI 1.3, via HDMI. Shouldn’t be having these issues, correct?

  • nothin to exciting

  • Here’s a question in regards to older firmware updates, specifically, the fix that was supposed to remedy the hosed PS2 graphics that made the image appear as though it was segmented into hundreds of vertical lines.

I’ve noticed this fix doesn’t actually work for all PS2 games (I’m in the US, with a US PS3.) Specifically, all my PS2 games look fine except for Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII. It still has the messed up graphics, no matter what I turn on or off in the game settings menu. Is there a list of games that the PS2 fix doesn’t resolve?

  • OK so posting msg # 366 about an update from days ago isn’t probably going to get much attention but this seems like the only way to “try” and provide Sony with feedback so…

WHEN WILL YOU LET US ADJUST THE VOLUME ON THE GAME ICONS IN THE XMB ???

Starting up my PS3 is something that should be PLEASANT… It should NOT be a friggin ear-bleeding blast just because you folks are trying to keep the retail display kiosks pumping out your noise!!!!!

  • Good job not really answering any of the guys questions on the Bonus Round Eric.

    High Five.

  • Ever since I updated my ps3 to vers. 1.80, my madden 07-for ps3-freezes up. I just updated to 1.81 and i get the same result. I played madden 07 and nba live 07 online for a couple of hours once I got the 1.80 upgrade and after that I noticed the problem. Also, with my ps3 utilizing the HDMI output, the unit shuts down like it’s overheated when I play regular dvds. To say I need some relief is an understatement. By the way, i purchased the system-new, of course-at gamestop just back in February.

  • In reference to post 359: considering the graphical capability of this thing, it would be a nice nod to the past to have a clock similar to the tunnel/crystal clock that was found in the PS2’s setup area, but done in with a PS3 twist. Plus another XMB wish would be to have album art downloaded when you rip a CD to the HDD (or has this already been done?).

  • When will Blue-Ray work in 720p? 1080i is a jittery, useless mess – the whole idea of HD is to get RID of interlace; 1080p isn’t available on my projector. Games work fine in 720p, but Blue-Ray disks are 480p maximum, which is useless – why spend $30 to watch the same resolution as you get with a standard DVD in progressive scan? I’d sure like to buy some other Blue-Ray disks (one is enough at 480p!) but until this thing works in 720p, there’s no point.

  • i think we should go on a firmware protest, ill bring the girls and ice.

  • I just heard about the confirmed in-game xmb. U r the freakin best Sony. Keep up the good work.

  • Can you help my “Media Center” problem? I need the Optical Out and Composite Audio Out to output audio signal simultaneously. Here’s why! (Kind Of Technical)

First off, I want very much for the PS3 to be the “Media Center” in my home. The problem I have is that my Yamaha HTR-5890 reciever only excepts analog audio signals for it’s Zone’s 2 and 3 inputs. I have it set up so the Optical Out is recieved and sent to my living room (Zone 1) speakers, but since the Yamaha’s Zone 2 inputs can only recieve analog signals, I have the Composite Red/White connected to it’s Zone 2 inputs. BUT the only way to have Zone 2 playing PS3 music is to manually change it from Optical Output(Zone 1) to Composite Output(Zone 2), and since the PS3 doesn’t produce audio through it’s Optical and Composite output jacks simulataneously, it’s keeping me from having PS3 music playing inside my home and outside next to the pool at the same time. This is very silly to me considering I don’t have this same problem with my Sony DVP – CV995V 400 Disc DVD player that I bought more than a year ago. Which I have connected to the Yamaha’s DVD Optical Input and also one of the Zone 2’s Analog/Composite Input, and I can enjoy it’s music inside (Zone 1) and outside (Zone 2) simultaneously. What really makes me laugh at the PS3 is that even my DirecTV box produces audio simultaneously through it’s Optical Out and Composite Out. So if I want to listen to XM Radio I can set my reciever to DTV in Zone 1 and DTV in Zone 2 and enjoy music in both areas. Because they both produce Optical and Composite Audio simultaneously. But with the PS3 it’s either inside with Zone 1 or it’s outside with Zone 2, unfortunetly not both.

  • I am not sure if this is the correct place to place this. But anybody with sony please look here. my girlfriend and i each have a PSP and cannot both use the remote play feature at the same time. I would like to see the ability for two different users to access the PS3 with two different log ins. This seems like it could be possible, even if a piece of media could only be accessed by one person at a time.

  • Oops!! i have one more idea. I would like the ability to build playlists in the system so i can select different albums or songs to play through. I hate having to come back to the house to kick the music back on. I also would like to see the remote play have an option to allow the ps3 to be controlled from the PSP. What i mean is changing songs on the PSP from another room, but the PS3 still outputs the music. This would be like a using the PSP as a remote instead of the way it is now in which the music streams to the PSSP. I just want to affect change on the PS3 in my house from the driveway without having to listen to the tiny speakers on the PSP.

  • Just seen this and wanted to post it for you guys. On http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=567411

there is a translation of a Watch Impress Japanese interview with the PS3 firmware developers. Its quite an interesting read. They cover in game sound custom tracks:

    “Q.
Linking to games, the 360 has a feature to allow music in the HDD and network to be played back as game BGM.

    Kawanishi
PS3 already has such function in the system software. It is up to the game developers to use the function. Same goes for pictures and videos.”

So there you have it – its up to the devs now, not Sony.

  • Is there any news on whether sony or going to add an option for forced 1080p 24fps ?

  • To #370…..720p Blu-Ray was added in the 1.80 update…maybe you should update your firmware.

  • PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!! TELL ME THAT YOU GUYS ARE EVENTUALLY HAVING A UPDATE WHERE YOU CAN PLAY MUSIC AND PS3 TITLES SIMALTANIOUSLY ? OMYLANTA THAT BEE SOO TITE

  • One feature I feel that is lacking is the bitstream audio support when launching video files from the XMB.

I have AVCHD recordings and DVB-captures which have a 5.1 audiotrack. PS3 converts that to stereo, though it’s possible to playback 5.1 from other sources. Could you please enable 5.1 audio support also when launching video from the media bar.

  • One addition: for some reason the dolby digital track isn’t recognized properly for regular tv broadcasts. The transport stream file has a dd5.1 track but PS3 can’t seem to find it, hence no audio whatsoever.

  • Perhaps an XMB update that allows Demos and Downloadable network games to be archived to an external Hard Drive would be nice. I Use a 250GB external with High Speed USB to store past movie previews, kinda “collect them”, and would love to do the same for game demos and network games. I don’ want them “playable” off the external, I’m willing to move them back and forth. Please consider it. Thanks, Lugoves

  • It would be nice if a future firmware update could add 48p output capability in addition to 24p. Why would this be useful? Current high-end Sony TVs such as the XBR2/XBR3/X2000 series do not feature 24p input processing, but they could take 48p input without problems, thus reducing the 3:2 pulldown judder effect with BD playback.

Additionally, what is the reason for downconverting DD5.1 tracks to stereo when playing back .m2ts files from the XMB? DD5.1 plays just fine via the optical output when playing back BD disks.

Apart from that, firmware 1.8/1.81 is a milestone for the AV capabilities of the PS3. Thanks!

  • Sony Releases Firmware Upgrade for PS3 «

[…] Releases Firmware Upgrade for PS3 According to a message from Sony’s official PlayStation.blog (as well as the multitude of PS3 owners that happened to turn on their consoles sometime today), […]

  • I echo the comments earlier by requesting a force 1080p24 “ON” option for Blu-Ray output.

My Samsung M87 LCD TV supports 1080p24 but sadly doesn’t say so in the EDID.

The ability to select “ON” for 24Hz playback would solve my problems and those of many others.

Please include this in the next update and release it as soon as possible.

    Thank you.

  • Why is there no option to pick up where you left off with movies, this should be a no brainer . I hope I didn’t miss this in the options.

  • to #367, Sure its there but with out an in game XBM there isn’t much use in supporting it if you ask me!

I agree with most. if the ps3 packs that much punch there shouldn’t be no issue on getting wallpaper, in game xbm and external audio game play to work. Im guessing most people want the PS3 to be a console first, media player second and all other things 3rd.

So yeah, bring me in game xmb, wallpaper (stills are cool, for now :P) and in game music of my choosing!

I also want to see some GAME content in he PS store.

Once again as other said, I want to give you my money and media functions are cool but I think the PS3 needs to address the GAME CONSOLE funtions first and meet the features of rivals and then worry abou the media stuff.

  • Well, I finally watched a 720p Blue-Ray disk using 1.81. Thanks VERY much for the tip that 1.80 resolved this long-standing problem. I admit right up front that after so many updates, I’d basically lost hope. Now its time to go buy a raft of BR disks.

  • I Think we do need access to the XMB while playing Games… if anything i would love to Play my songs while im playing a game what would be very nice indeed :D

  • I know that everyone is mentioning big changes but I want something more subtle. FLAC support. Yes I know it is not a standard audio codec but many people use it — I know that personally I keep all my backedup music files in FLAC format.

  • Thanks for listening to people’s comments and requests, Sony!

  • Thanks for the heads up on this, very good work in keeping us in the loop, I have a few suggestions though:

DivX and Xvid – you’ve heard it a thousand times already, you must not be listening for a reason – if you can’t do it, let us know why and then we’ll know you’re not ignoring us.

The media server and streaming is good but not quite up to scratch. my PS3 streams once out of 10 tries and crashes even – we need a PS3 streaming program or something for the PC.

  • This is great. To finally be “in the loop” on this kind of thing is a god send for us PS3 fans.

I now feel like, as a community, we are starting to be heard. While the set of implemented features is smaller this time (1.81-1.82) it is most definatley a welcome one.

With each update I feel more and more value being added to my favorite system.

    Thanks!

  • I want a firmware update that lets my PS3 transform into a robot.
Come On Sony! why is that taking so long? I’ve been promised my PS Decepticon since launch, and you have constantly failed to deliver.
    humph.

  • You guys are going to hate me but I will keep posting this messege to Eric Lempell until he responds to me directly. Mr.Lempell, on behalf of myself and other PS3 owners, please take my following advice to make gamers play their PS3.
    1. XMB during playing a game, just like the 360, I want someone to call me via headset and I can answer in game while I press the START/PS button.
    2. Comment box on the network that directly feeds to your R&D so that you can see what the majority of owners are in demand for.
    3. Have us tell you what classic PS1 and PS2 games we want updated, with maybe online features, like Jet Moto 1 but online multiplayer, or Return Fire with online multiplayer.
    4. Team up with Sega or Nintendo and have classic games from all previous sytems also on the network, gives us more of a variety.
    5. Re-create great games like Vigilante 8 or Syndicate Wars for next gen.
    6. Make the Internet Explorer better, its lame and not user friendly.
    7. Give us an application so that we can rip PS1 and PS2 games onto our harddrive just like I can with computer games onto my PC.
    8. While Im speaking on my headset, let me navigate anywhere I want just like 360 owners can.
    9. Fix the glitch to where my music can actually stream from my PC to my PS3, why can my pictures and videos work but not my music? Its not a user problem Im not an idiot, I set it up and the first night it worked right, the next day Music didnt work.
    10. When we do an update, tell us exactly what the update is.

That is all for now Eric, I hope this helped, you can contact me at

    roastermuffin@hotmail.com

I hope to hear from you soon as to what your going to do about my advice. As for everyone else you can email me directly or leave a messege here, I want to know realistically what other peoples ideas are as to how to make the PS3 that much better.

  • phospho… im sure they are working on some of those ideas.

some of them arent really up to sony.. games like vigilante 8 were awesome, but its not a game that sony makes! send your request to activision.

  • I now recently buy guitar hero 2 with the adaptor ASD-031 Ps2 to Ps3 controller. The game play well
