Introducing a New Series to PlayStation.Blog: Inside the Developers Studio

Posted by Patrick Seybold // Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media

We wanted to introduce you to a new series of posts we’re going to have here starting Monday that we are affectionately calling “Inside the Developers Studio.” If you’ve ever seen Inside the Actors Studio, you are familiar with how host, James Lipton, asks the same questions to every guest on the show. Inspired by this ritual, we thought it would be fun to develop our own set of E3-specific questions and have the developers of some of our most anticipated first-party titles candidly give insight into their titles and E3.

Over the next two and a half weeks we will post a different developer’s responses every day, so stay tuned and hear directly from the creative minds behind some of your favorite games…

I know kojima isnt sony first party but id still like to see him on this “show” if you will.

Lp47  |  June 23rd, 2007 at 3:22 pm

I like this idea very much. I love hearing from developers, especially if there talking about the PS3 or their games on a PS3.

105

Korlithiel  |  June 23rd, 2007 at 3:23 pm

Even if we don’t get to ask the questions will the developers at least come around and reply to some comments?

I think this could be great for those who like to help mold and shape products or give ideas but all I see this as is another medium to get insight into the games before they are released, free advertising in other words.

Great! Finally get to hear from devs themselves about what they’re actually doing with Cell and Blu-ray. Hope to hear from Media Molecule, Naughty Dog, and Free Radical.

I am interested about hearing from Insomniac, Level 5, Factor 5, Ninja Theory, Evolution Studios, Sony Studio Liverpool and just all of sony’s first party studios.

Hope its going to be in video form because it would be a bit boring read the interviews.

all in all, its a really cool idea keep it up.

All Sony developers should have development diaries on this blog so as to update their progress on each of their titles just a suggestion—at least show us concept art, game models and such.

What do you guys think?

P.S. we need more info on HOME intergration in games such as trophies or extra content to incentivise gamers.

what would make me get the ps3 version of GTA IV over the 360 version.

good luck : )

Speaking about first party games, does anyone know if Motorstorm developer (Evolution Studios) will make any more games for the Ps3 since they are done with Motorstorm. I personally hope they continue developing for Sony and stay on as a first party developer, along with Factor 5 and Ninja Theory.

WHY SHOULD ADULT GAMERS LOSE OUT BECAUSE SOME PARENTS DONT WANT THEIR CHILDREN TO PLAY VIOLENT GAMES…? DONT BUY IT FOR THEM!!!

I DONT THINK IT IS FAIR, IF YOU ARE OLD ENOUGH YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO BUY AND PLAY ANY GAME YOU LIKE… IVE PLAYED ALL THE GTA GAMES BUT IVE NEVER KILLED ANYONE OR STOLEN A CAR!!!

I THINK SONY NEED TO REALISE THAT ALOT OF THEIR CONSUMERS ARE OVER A CERTAIN AGE, PS3 OWNERS MORE SO…. IT IS AN EXPENSIVE CONSOLE SO UNLESS MUMMY AND DADDY ARE FILTHY RICH YOUR NOT GETTIN ONE UNLESS YOU ARE OLD ENOUGH TO GO OUT AND WORK AND EARN MONEY TO BUY ONE.

IF A GAME HAS AN AGE RATING THEN DONT SELL IT TO KIDS THAT ARE UNDERAGE, SAME AS WITH BEER CIGARETTES AND PORN….. SIMPLE.

120

Gregory Block  |  June 24th, 2007 at 5:32 am

What is the alternative to adult gamers “losing out”? If the line isn’t drawn at AO, where do people think it should be drawn?

I understand Sony’s plight, here – there’s got to be a line somewhere. Maybe not forever, but today, a line is needed. This isn’t like the magazine publishing industry, with billions of periodicals floating around across an infinite number of publishing channels; the guy who makes the printing press doesn’t have a say in what the press is used for.

A console is not akin to a printing press. As sole arbiter, every published title has an impact on Sony – good and bad. So while the printing press doesn’t have to care that his press is being used to print propaganda or porn, the ecosystem on consoles is smaller; the risk of damage to reputation and business is greater.

There’s so much more at stake.

rukusa  |  June 24th, 2007 at 10:48 am

@starfoxACEFOX

I dont think you shoudl expect SUcker Punch to make another Sly Cooper game. Their newest project is a u-turn from the sly cooper series according to ’some’ sources.

But thats all I know :(.

finally something useful to read here

123

jayd1k  |  June 24th, 2007 at 12:16 pm

is this blog just going to talk about developing for games or all things PS?! if so, is Sony going put some time into the browsers on the PS3 and the PSP?

124

Nephlabobo  |  June 24th, 2007 at 12:26 pm

Gregory Block says:
Here’s a question for the bunch of folks saying Sony should allow AO:

The line is at AO not because of violence, but because of sex and porn. If I made a sex-with-girls simulator, should Sony allow that to be sold? Sure, it’ll be AO.

Well, they do in Japan. I see no difference, to be honest.

There was a valid point made in this thread.

Why have the AO rating if Sony (and Nintendo and MS) won’t use it?

@Patrick S.

Nice to see someone respond to their entry; Can we expect to see more of this kind of interaction with the users through out the life time of this blog? It is incredibly reassuring to get answers with out the middle man / reporter.

Patrick Seybold  |  June 24th, 2007 at 2:37 pm

@severeon: Yes, although it may be tough for the developing teams as they are prepping for E3. But overall, yes, folks will be responding directly in the comment section.

129

Tiddy187  |  June 24th, 2007 at 3:47 pm

Heavenly Sword and Killzone2 developers should really come prepared because there are really going to be some good questions. These games have been in development for ages and they better deliver not to talk about the massive budgets. Formula for an excellent game(true quality TQ): TQ=Time*CellProcesor/Space(TQ=t*CP/S) measured in 1080p/60fps. Standard for a next gen games. Nothing less will be accepted.
They had enough time, the power of the cell hasn’t even been tapped yet and there is enough disc space on the BLU-RAy. Has sony ever thought of releasing 2 disc blu-ray discs? Making a total of 100GB disc spaces, games like this might need it. Can’t wait for the Dstudio and even better E3.

130

Godofwar55555  |  June 24th, 2007 at 3:50 pm

I hope that the developers give the gamers what they want, like game information, release dates and all of those important things. I also would not mind hearing about frame rates or resolutions. I cannot wait for this.

131

NewYork214  |  June 24th, 2007 at 5:05 pm

whoever said killzone was a bad game is a moron. sorry for this not being on topic but i think people who said it was a bad game never even played it cause i just rented it thinking im not going to like it and now its one of my favorite FPS.

132

Tiddy187  |  June 24th, 2007 at 5:47 pm

I just said these games NEED TO DELIVER. Killzone is a great game, so is Heavenly Sword, you have to let the developers know what the gamers want. As a matter of fact i think games like LAIR, ASSASINS CRED, and some other will fall short because these games “SO FAR” lack the “SATISFYING FACTORS” top selling games today deliver.
Look at
1.motorstorm: the boost, the way the vehicles blow up.. that is just wow 10/10 although it was rushed and released incomplete.
2. God of war: the way you finish your opponents the combos, storyline 10/10,
3.Gears of war: weapons, superb graphics, and the CHAINSAW and online multiplayer.. 10/10
4.Resistance fall of man: nice weapons, fast pace, solid frame rate, online play 10/10
*Assasin’s creed lacks a SOLID COMBAT SYSTEM,though the graphics are superb and you can climb anywhere that sticks out 2″ or more, leap of faith, and so on, but the combat is SO FAR slow paced & the one hit combos that is so lame. The game is great but they have to work on that.
*LAIR: Big dragons, massive landscapes. Is that it? A lot of work is still required on the combat too. The frame rate falls short too. Why not jump off the dragon on to the battle field, unleash some Mortal Kombat/God of War like Combos, hop back on the dragon and make fire rain.ALL AT 1080p and 60frames per sec. Now thats what the gamers want. And this is what is going to sell the product. THE PS3 IS HARD TO DEVELOP FOR IS NOT AN EXCUSE.

133

NewYork214  |  June 24th, 2007 at 6:07 pm

@ tiddy187

sorry, i wasnt talkin to you. i was just saying it cause i jsut rented killzone and i actually like it so i just felt like posting that here. my bad

134

jh2112  |  June 24th, 2007 at 7:07 pm

@Gregory Block

I don’t agree that “a line must be drawn somewhere”. Let the rating system do its job by describing exactly the kind of content in a game and giving it a fair overall rating, and then let the marketplace decide its viability. If Wal-Mart doesn’t want to sell AO-rated games, fine — but the console manufacturers’ current policy wouldn’t even allow a developer to sell an AO-rated game on their own website. This is ridiculous.

If Sony is so concerned about “protecting the children” or whatever, why do they allow the playback of NC-17 rated movies on their game consoles? Isn’t that just as “damaging”, if not moreso, than a game like “Manhunt 2″?

Doesn’t Sony realize that the average age of today’s gamer is ~28 years old? With that in mind, how does it make any kind of sense to censor adult content when so much of their customer base is of legal age?

I hope that Rockstar releases “Manhunt 2″ with all of its original AO content on the PC, and I hope it sells through the roof. Maybe it’ll be a wake-up call to the console manufacturers, proving that a condescending nanny attitude only serves to annoy your customer base…

135

40cal  |  June 24th, 2007 at 9:13 pm

There is no form of media that should be restricted. At least not in the U.S. “The land of FREEDOM!” I am in my mid 20’s, if I want to play Manhunt 2 I will.

@Tiddy187 you make a good point yet Assasins Creed and Lair will sell tons of units based off of HYPE, I will be spending my money on both. Yes Killzone 2 and Heavenly Sword look to be higher end titles and that is why I am looking forward to them even more.

The blog is great keep it up.

Sony is King! Sony is King!

40cal  |  June 24th, 2007 at 9:19 pm

Just read that Hollywood film composer John Debner has been working on the score for Lair for 12 months. WOW. The sound track for this game is a year in the making. I cant wait.

137

monster  |  June 24th, 2007 at 9:54 pm

It’s good idea!
Now this is what we are looking for.

138

Devin1498  |  June 24th, 2007 at 10:24 pm

Great! Make one of the questions for developers, “Why do you think the company that ostensibly supports your creativity doesn’t have enough backbone to give you freedom with regards to adult content? After all Sony markets itself to adult gamers. It is selling a 600. console that none to very few under-18-year-olds would be able to buy, and they market themselves as cutting edge and industry leaders. On a scale of 1-10 how ashamed/embarrassed are you for the company and yourself-as a creative leader in the industry [this part is optional]-based on the policy by which AO games are not supported?” That would be an excellent question for your Inside the Developer’s Studio E-3 Edition.

139

Devin1498  |  June 24th, 2007 at 11:03 pm

@GregoryBlock
Lets not pretend Sony actually feels concerned for some “line” of morality. The market will dictate “where the line is drawn,” and not some half baked philosophy manifested out of peoples’ prejudices against video games. That means when Manhunt 2 is properly released as an AO title, and it sells satisfactorily or better, despite not being sold in the White Trash Mart or wherever else, we’ll all realize how artificial this controversy is. Again, if you support this policy, you’re spineless and a travesty to the gaming industry, community, but most of all the people who actually care about the medium: the artists.

140

ARMZ  |  June 25th, 2007 at 1:01 am

Dear Sony,

Besides gaming and gadget news that will come out of E3, what can we expect to hear about development tools? Specifically tools for the average user who would like to create his/her own game? What’s happening with Game Yaroze? It was mentioned over a year ago but nothing has eventuated since.

Cheers.

141

ahh bisto  |  June 25th, 2007 at 2:04 am

“FREEDOM FOR GAMERS FREEDOM FOR GAMERS FREEDOM FOR GAMERS FREEDOM FOR GAMERS FREEDOM FOR GAMERS” do a poll and im sure you will find the the majority of gamers who go out and buy games regularly (the ones who line your pockets with lots and lots and lots of cash) are old enough to buy and play any game they choose.

there is plenty of titles for the younger generation to be playing on so why not stand up for us older gamers sony, we are the ones who have stuck with our playstations for over a decade… we want to play games like manhunt 2!

i can understand that it may not be suitable for people under a certain age but you have to remember that ALOT of ps gamers are over a certain age and dont want to be stuck with sonic!!!

MAKE A STAND FOR YOUR MORE MATURE GAMERS SONY BECAUSE IF WE GET STUCK WITH GAMES WE DONT LIKE OR A SELECTION OF GAMES THAT IS LIMITED TO CHILDREN YOU WILL START TO LOOSE US FOREVER THEN WHERE WILL YO BE IN ANOTHER TEN YEARS WHEN YOUR YOUNGER GENERATION ARE STUCK IN THE SAME BOAT AS US?

i dont wish to moan and grumble to much i just want to know that you guys are doing somthing about all this agro over the game ratings and bans on games ie; manhunt 2………. we want theese kind of games, what will be next? ban tiger woods cos he uses a golf club to hit a poor defenceless little white ball???? make a stand now sony and save us from a life of boredom……. i hope this gets read!

Floyd Bishop  |  June 25th, 2007 at 1:15 pm

cmack98: Yes, I remember that. I was at BottleRocket at the time, working on the sequel to “The Mark of Kri” called “Rise of the Kasai”. I had my own small shop in the Scranton area for two years after that, and just came back to Sony in March of ‘07. I’m a senior artist on the NBA 08 game (which is looking and playing great BTW).

As far as the Manhunt 2 game someone mentioned, it reminds me of the issues surrounding “Mortal Kombat” when it first went to the home consoles. Nintendo changed the blood from red to gray, making it look like sweat and toned back the fatalities. Sega ran with the blood and gore for their port, and outsold Nintendo’s version 3 to 1. Could the same happen with “Manhunt 2″? Who knows? It’s a very different climate now with the ESRB, post Columbine, post 9/11 world.

147

EVILEMPIRE951  |  June 25th, 2007 at 4:00 pm

I think Sony is doing FINE hows it going right now JUST so many immature lil kids want evreything NOW (big companys) aren’t there because of now it takes time to be the top dogs as SONy i will see them success once more AGAIN because they are top dogs that evreybody tries to put down :-)

148

Kaze88  |  June 26th, 2007 at 5:55 am

@evilempire951

Europeans usually get games later than others, im pretty used to that but when they postpone release 4 days before the release at 25 days whitout reason makes me a bit angry…

Sony has always been on longterm plan. its slow but very deadly, whereas microsoft is running hasty with its pants on its ankle.

149

Dew87  |  June 27th, 2007 at 3:33 pm

Hi guys, I really hope you start doing podcasts pretty soon. It would nice to hear you guys talk about it for an hour and our questions. Please think about it. Thanks.

150

Tiddy187  |  June 27th, 2007 at 8:17 pm

Has anyone seen the new FOLKLORE trailer it looks excellent. But the game itself ain’t all that. Let’s hope Heavenly Sword looks better than that. And the new LAIR trailer: looks good but something is still missing. BAD COMBAT SYSTEM. still not effective. PERIOD.
