Following Up, RCF Sneak Peek

Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
A few weeks ago, I blogged about the Resistance global server/map pack release date, along with a promise of a sneak peek at Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction. Since then, an interview with RCF creative director Brian Allgier has surfaced here, teasing some details (such as enemies with evil fish steering a robotic body), and if you listen to the Insomniac Games Full Moon Show, they were promising a screen shot of said sneak peek – this screen shot I share with you now, check it out.

This shot is taken from our E3 level, Metropolis, and it’s the first thing a player will see after the opening movie plays. It’s probably safe to say that the Captain Quark statue may not make it out in one piece. As for why Metropolis is under attack, well… it has something to do with heavily armed robotic commandos, large space ships and, maybe, something to do with Ratchet’s unknown past that is coming back to haunt him. Or maybe Quark pressed the wrong button in the planetary defense center again and is about to see his chiseled likeness go up in smoke because of it. It’s too early to say much more…

There will also be penguins, courtesy of the Transmorpher. The Transmorpher is one of our new devices (along with the Grooveitron and several others that we haven’t announced yet) that will turn most enemies into penguins. Because, really, they are all the rage these days, and we didn’t want to be left out of the penguin craze; sheep are too last gen for us.

With time permitting at E3 this week, I’ll try to chime back in here with more RCF details from the show.

Thank you for trying to turn me into an insomniac.

+ moshakirby on July 8th, 2007 at 4:00 pm said:

Hate to burst your bubble guys but that screenshot isn’t rendered real time.
That is, of course, unless it actually was rendered at a resoloution of 3840×2160 (Original file size).

+ VascoDa on July 8th, 2007 at 4:05 pm said:

I think we need a comments ranking. It could be kind of dialog here.. most resonable comments will be our voice in this blog. I hope someone is reading this.

Back to the topic: this screen shows old RC designs in hi-res. I like this style, but it is so repetetive. I hope to see more new designs in this game, coz Insomniac = great creativity.

+ Regret on July 8th, 2007 at 4:08 pm said:

HUGE picture! Looks great even on this resoultion. I hope all screenshots will be this size in future interviews/sneakpeeks.

I know this is off topic but any chance of some info on Resistence 2 even if it is just a teaser trailer.

Also is there any chance of a patch for the game later on in for a multiplayer game.

+ arias on July 8th, 2007 at 5:00 pm said:

Why would the leaves be rendered that poorly if this was a pre-rendered scene? I’m pretty convinced it’s real-time work; or at least something not beyond the PS3’s capacities.

+ 40cal on July 8th, 2007 at 5:55 pm said:

Can’t wait for the PSN E3 bar to become active. I keep clicking on it even though I know its not working yet.

The R&C screen looks sweet.

The new DW Gundum demo is bad, could that game suck any more I dont think so.

Three more days till E3! Three more days till E3!

So can you turn them into penguins & then make the penguins dance?

Looks amazing

+ gamer1983 on July 8th, 2007 at 7:26 pm said:

just dont rush the game plz

+ stennex on July 8th, 2007 at 8:16 pm said:

Yes dont rush it. This the year 2007 in the 21st century. Its time we that with all this power in a machine we get compelling gameplay advancement. Tired of the simple just run and shoot. Need more style to movement. Gears of war can boast about not just having gamers run and shoot but actually you were able to change movements to your advantage in the game not just duck and jump very entertaining. I hope RFOM 2 will come up with more intriguing gameplay techniques got tired of just shooting. R&C looks very promising please just dont rush it.You have all the power from the PS3 so now we have great graphics all left is a compelling story and great camera angles and gameplay overall. Anyway just looking out for my peeps.

Sony Forever!

+ stennex on July 8th, 2007 at 9:13 pm said:

I am going off topic. Who or what at Sony does the thinking. I would love to meet that person or persons or thing. It is ridiculous to bring an 80gb system to the U.S when the HDD is upgradable. Bestbuy or even Compusa could charge to upgrade the drive for the masses of regular customers who do not know how to upgrade or have trouble upgrading their HDD. $499.00 with motostorm, collection of the arcade games or 5 free blu-ray movies would be better. Sony Sony Sony. This is going to be interesting.

+ Joe on July 8th, 2007 at 9:21 pm said:

I second that stennex. I for one am shocked that Sony would make the PS3 keep the same price. 600 and all you are getting is 20 more gigs and a 60 dollar game. If people buy this version they lose money.

So if Sony really wants to make people buy the PS3 bring the 600 dollar system to 500 and the 500 one to 400. Then the PS3 would be flying off the shelf.

I hope Sony does that come the Holiday Season.

+ Rzarekta on July 8th, 2007 at 9:26 pm said:

Ok, I don’t know where else to write this, so here goes: Sony, why on earth are you going to add another $599 model of the PS3 after lowering the price to $599? So many people on the forums around the web are saying how ridiculous this move is. The price cut of $100 is fantastic, many people were excited about it, but now, by adding this new 80GB model with Motor Storm for $599 is making the price cut pointless. This move will only confuse consumers, and will make the $499 model obsolete just like the 20GB model that came out at launch. Don’t you realize that you already had a $499 and $599 version of the system, and no one wanted the $499 one because it wasn’t the best model? Now, people are saying that the PS3 is still $599 as though the price wasn’t lowered by $100. I mean, really, it doesn’t make any sense why you would choose to do this. One version of the PS3 for $499 would have moved units, but now with a new $599 version coming out, people are already disinterested.

+ Rzarekta on July 8th, 2007 at 9:40 pm said:

One more thing to add. This person said it well – “What the heck’s the point of lowering the price of the 60gig PS3 if they’re just going to leave it in the shadow of a new, superior model? They’ve effectively put themselves back to where they were at launch. Sony should be pushing forward aggressively, not touting a “price cut” that for all intents and purposes is completely artificial.” Sony, you guys really need to not do this. The $100 price cut is now completely outshadowed by this new version that is receiving very negative feedback.

+ Grover on July 8th, 2007 at 9:41 pm said:

Please people stop being so ignorant. Sony is a business – you want Sony to survive? With the large model they will be able to make some money on that model, while not making much on the 60GB.

Fact is, you cannot go and buy a 2.5inch 80GB HDD and MotorStorm for less than $100 USD, so everyone’s claim that the bigger model is a rip off is completely false. Heck, a 80GB 2.5 inch drive is going to cost you at least $100 USD in any case!!

Quit the BS people.

Ok, Insomniac. I mean this in all seriousness. Using this screen as an indication, if you were to release this E3 demo onto PSN, it would theoretically bring down the rest of the gaming world TO IT’S KNEES, OUT OF THE SHEER TECHNICAL AND VISUAL AMAZEMENT IT RADIATES!! I find it difficult to imagine any other game that has come this close to achieving LITERAL PIXAR LEVEL.

This game is standing up and demonstrating the true power of the media’s “whipping boy”. I couldn’t be happier as a Ratchet fan and PS3 owner.

If this post serves any purpose, I am requesting, no, pleading, that you put this demo onto the PSN for download. I’d imagine being this far away from release would leave the demo open to bugs and the like, (or maybe not, you are Insomniac). But please, consider, by any means possible, getting this demo out there, showing the world the talent of Insomniac and the power of the PS3.

My god, that screen looks amazing…. and in motion!?…. *drowns in drool*

Color me excited for E3.
