We’re Just Getting Started…

New Sony PSP
What a week! E3 is always an exciting time of year when we can roll up our sleeves and finally show you what we have planned for the year and beyond. As I’m sure you saw, on Monday we announced we are expanding the purchase options for PS3 by adding a new PS3 model to the market in August with an 80GB HDD. We also were able to engineer some cost savings into hardware production of PS3 and lowered the purchase price of our 60GB model by $100, effective immediately. We feel that is a substantial price reduction and hope if you haven’t purchased a PS3 yet, it will encourage you to do so. You probably also heard that we introduced a new, sleeker PSP; new features for our PlayStation Home service; and, as promised: games, games and more games.

This holiday and fiscal year more than 400 games are coming to PlayStation fans in North America. There will be over 120 PS3 titles including what we’re showing here at E3: Warhawk, Lair, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, The Eye of Judgment, PAIN, Echochrome, SOCOM: U.S. Navy Seals Confrontation, SingStar and many more. All of those are exclusive to the PS3, and those are the ones just from us. We also showed at our press conference today other exclusives from our third party partners, like Haze, Unreal Tournament 3 and the one you have been commenting so much about on this very blog, Metal Gear Solid 4.

In addition, the PSP will score more than 140 games and PS2 over 160 this year. And, if you didn’t get a chance to see the new Star Wars Battlefront PSP Entertainment Pack, be sure to check out the pictures I’ve included here with this post. The Darth Vader image on the back of the new white PSP is pretty cool, in my opinion.

Our goal right now is simple: to provide you with the most compelling gaming experience possible, and as we are showing here this week, we are well on the way to achieving that goal.

Right now is a good time to reflect and say thank you. Thank you for being passionate members of the video game community and part of the PlayStation family. The best is yet to come.

  • Ps3 needs more exclusives! btw great that UT3 and Haze is timeexclusives! i really love that! take that Micro[DELETED]!

  • SIR, CAN YOU AT LEAST TELL US WHAT HAPPENED WITH AFRIKA, 8 DAYS AND GETAWAY 3?
Sonys Press Conference was awesome but for me personally not showing this titles was a little let down.
I have been waiting whole year to hear something about GetAway 3 and there was nothing :-(

  • Wow… Aren’t we big on assumptions.
“sounded like you just wouldn’t be satisfied even IF they did give you said things”

Why wouldn’t I be satisfied, thats a lot of stuff that would help it out. These seem like obvious things they could do to help themselves out.

“little in the way of exclusives”
    – MGS4, UT3, Ratchet, Uncharted, Infamous, Warhawk, LittleBigPlanet…want me to go on?

I thought I specifically mentioned Third-party exclusives until I was blue in the face. You might want to read a little, you know use that ‘edumaction’.

“Some of the things you are suggesting that Sony do are reactive moves”

Why not do it. There is already a great deal of support for PS2 and the thing could move down in price to 99. PS2 w/ waggle and the games for it could deal a lot of damage to Nintendo and its Wii [250 vs 99], wounds like a winner and besides casuals don’t care about graphics (at least I don’t think they do.

So my suggestions is that you keep people on their toes. And for God sakes stop with the “your a whiner” and “wishbabble” nonsense, because seriously they need to offer up a lot you do realize you spent a 100 to 200 dollars more on your console that does seem to be living up to the hype and isn’t fairing super well compared to 360 and its line-up. Sony doing a decent job, but this turtle mentality they got isn’t really paying out much right now and if the other consoles gain enough mind share early enough on then this whole future talk won’t hold much water.

I hope this doesn’t mean that Sony has ripped the Emotion Engine out of the North American models as well. Can the list of engineering changes be made public? I have a few friends that want a PS3 but they don’t want one that’s had the PS2 hardware removed.

  • awesome conference! the new features in home look great! i maybe upgrading to the new psp and killzone… OMFG amazing!

  • I love my current PSP like a babe, but I have a small request/hope for the redesign. The ghosting on the current PSP’s screen gets pretty bad pretty fast. I have 12 PSP games currently and plan to buy more, but I don’t want to have them blurring accross the screen constantly (I know it’s not the games themselves.) I suppose the TV output is a step in the right driection for this, but it’s still an on-the-go device, and if the built in screen deteriorates like this still, it won’t make me the happiest guy in the world…

  • If the ghosting problem the original PSP suffers from is fixed, I’ll be there day one to pick up this new model.

  • “The best is yet to come”

    >_>

Metal Gear Solid 1 theme :D

  • I just found some hidden E3 videos in PS store!

Great idea Sony and I’ll not rest till I found them all.

  • Well I realize that my statements pissed a lot of people off. And I may have come off sounding like a fanboy of another console, but seriously people raise the bar. Do I expect Sony to be able to do all the stuff I listed off hell no. But, I figure if you set the bar real high then a person will put a lot more effort into it then if it was only a foot of the ground. People need to step back a bit and realize that people ask for a lot sometimes and thats just the way of the world. To call everyone a whiner who makes demands is a bit much. Try not to take stuff too seriously. Some of you seem to have your hearts attached to the PS3 or anything PS, if so I suggest you take back your heart and take a step back a view said product critically and impersonally. Ask your self if there is something that could be done to enhance it in someway. If you still feel good overall then say so and the matter rest.

Sorry to the people who get offended easily.

  • @noname, shut up and go away, no one cares, your first impression to us wasnt good,
today is a great day for sony the ps3 and sony gamers, there is nothing to complain about unless you are a pissed xbot…. and i dont blame you… you should be…

waiting for mgs 4 and getting scene it and viva pinata instead, while sony takes away haze and unreal 3 from ms….

    disappear… hide for a year or two…

  • Damn! I was just about to buy two PSPs for the kids. Do i buy now or do i wait….

  • good e-3 overall. could you fill us in on the details of the new psp though? battery life?? some kind of measured affect on load times? Also more pictures of the hardware to demonstrate its thinness?

Also why do you treat Americans like we’re colorphobic? Japan has had several PSP colors for a while now, and even the rest of the world seems to have more than piano black and silver. Am I going to have to import my PSP from Japan to get a cool color?

  • Actually noname… The problem is you are annoying in tone and condescending in attitude.

Your responses come prepackaged with the happy “half a brain” insults and quips. You point at people who could very well be children and smugly tell them off.

Bottom line… Your suggestions are basically the random opinion of some powerless guy on the internet.

Take the tone done and you will achieve greater success.

  • PSP gaming on my TV set? Sold!

Now how about hooking the PSP up with HOME and PSN…

  • I just wanted to say good job Jack you made it through the conference without any major mistakes or mishaps. You did look nervous and clearly out of your element however you did very well.

    Begins slow clap
    *clap clap clap*

  • Jack T. I want you to know that I think you did a really good job today .. its really hard to get in front of a bunch of people that have been nothing but harsh for the past year .. but today was evidence that you all DO in FACT know what your doing.

Ever since I accidentally bought the Playstation One the same day it launched (in puerto rico we didnt really know about it), Sony Playstation has played an important role in my imagination and creativity :). You have created a legacy and like all empires the challenges and expectations are great.

So, Great so far and I am looking forward to the next 9 years as a proud Playstation owner.

  • by the way when can I pre-order mine?

  • Amazing conference Sony!!!! keep up the good work and hope you will continue like this in the future. And thanx for keeping MGS4 exclusive. Btw killzone, LBP, heavenly, sword, lair, gt5, mgs4 look crazy hooooooooooooooot!

  • QUESTION! QUESTION!

The Star Wars Pack. does that include the game and 1gb memory stick as well or just the PSP with Darth Vader costing 199 or will it be 169?

    QUESTION! QUESTION!

  • I HEARD NOTHING ON lair,

  • Great show Jack! You guys really did a phenomenal job today! Just want you to know today you made playstation nation proud!

  • Hey Guys. Just had a break in the action at E3 and thought I would log in to the blog to see what the reaction of the gamers was to our press conference. Thanks for all your positive feedback.

For those of you who got a chance to watch the live feed, you could probably tell I was a little nervous, but its not everyday you are on stage in front of 1,200 people… particularly as your own avatar! Feedback immediately after from those who attended was pretty darn good. I hope we demonstrated that we are really focused on listening to you guys and giving you the games and the hardware you deserve as PlayStation fans.

I am swamped, but wanted to just jump on and let you know I appreciate all your support. I will try to blog again from E3. Thanks again.

  • And maybe answer a few of our questions? That would be nice.

  • Awesome work Sony! Keep it up!

Thanks for the update Jack! :)

  • @DARKIEWONDER

This pack brings the white limited edition vader psp, as well as the new starwars game. The price is $199.99

  • Have a good time jack! You were very good. It was alot more light hearted and fun than usual! Good work. ‘Hey Kaz are you playing Riiidge racer?’ *Room is floored*

Also, maximum respect for staying straight faced when hugging chewbakka and him going ‘GUUHUUURRHGGGHH!’

The new PS3 age begins here.

  • You did a wonderful job.

I hope the conference is coming to the PSN. That would be awesome if you guys could add it there!

Can’t wait to play all these awesome games. You guys are making me poor!

  • Also jack, If your reading and posting on this blog why are phil and kaz eerily absent?
Playing Motorstorm and Ridge Racer? tusk tusk.
But yea, you should pursuade them to chat on here. Im already loving having direct contant with you and the developers of many great games. Kaz And phil would seal the deal.

  • @Mr Tretton

You no doubtely had the best conference, and what I absolutely loved about this years conference it was about GAMES. I was sort of tired about you promoting how PS3 is the best bluray player and how all these movies are being sold because of PS3, or even how much you guys talked about the CELL, RSX, and hard drive in every box. I was tired of hearing about this supergreatomgbestever technology, and I wanted to experience it. I think you showed games and experiences that take advantage of these today and show us gamers that this technology in the box that we paid extra for, is worth it and will pay off in the quality of the games we recieve. You will undoubtely recieve a whole bunch of awards, but what can I say? You deserve it.

  • We want open beta of home now, more betas to ps owners and not only gap members, and we want firm 2.0, any date plz? Thx

  • Kratos_ate_Snake

Jack, buddy, we love ya…. best show indeed.

One thing though, could you please, please, be a pal and answer us one thing right here? Are we getting demos from E3?

Please we are all anxious, and we would appreciated if you could at least give us a tease like “this demo and so demo will be up before the end of the month.”

Please Jack, trailers and a big show really spark up the fire, but Demos keep the flame alive.

  • Have to give credit where credit is due, and so props to Sony for delivering games, games and games.

So many great titles to look forward to this year and next. Great to see the content appearing in the store immediately following the conference, any idea when the conference will be put up in the store too?

I’d also just have to say that I was surprised about Lair not been shown, but it did recieve a bit of attention verbally about the size of the game.

I can’t go without asking about any further announcements, what say you to a firmware upgrade with XMB in game to send us all home happy from E3?

  • Killgtx do you think anyone is going to take posts like that seriously?
Good job Sony this was a great showing today.

  • 135# 360 has get cod 4 beta….

  • Please give us the Killzone DEMO!

  • Kratos_ate_Snake

Judging from the fact that 360 gets a COD4 beta, I think that the PS3 version, (or at least the MP) will once again get the shaft. Hope not…

Jack Treatton and everyone else in the sony blog should post in the comments more often. Agree?

  • I am so glad you guys are releasing a redesigned PSP . I am buying it

  • I’ve been a hardcore 360 fanboy but today at E3 i think you’ve sold me. Probably gonna be picking up a PS3 in a few weeks.

  • Okay, I saw the redesigned PSP in E3 on G4, now I was just wondering, will the current PSP be able to use Video Output in a firmware update, or not, also will we be seeing some new XMB themes, like the ones showcased (Orange & Dark Blue) in a firmware update for our current PSPs? If you have any information about this, please post a blog about this, thanks SCEA.

    Firmware History: 2.82 > 3.03 > 3.10 > 3.40 > 3.50 > Well I don’t think SCEA would like to see the rest if you know what I mean…

  • Folks – I love the PlayStation as much as everybody else. I am one of the few folks who bought an Original PlayStation on 9.9.95. It’s said that if you love something, you should provide constructive criticism. Here it goes:

    – Most obviously, how could you “redesign” the PSP and not put another Analog stick. This has been the single biggest criticism of the PS as far as gameplay, first person shooters, etc. I just don’t get it. I know you don’t want to hurt those of us who already have PSP’s with only one stick, but the goal is to make a gamer friendly experience. I don’t get it.

    – It’s just not sexy enough. There’s no redesign. If I saw somebody walking down the street with this, the only thing aside from the Star Wars logo that would show me that this thing is a different unit is if I saw it from the side. Come on, guys. Go crazy with this. Get inspired. Think Apple. Round the edges. Hell, I don’t know, do something….

I’m sure I’m opening myself up for the big slam, but it’s said that those who really care about your will tell you if you have spinach in your teeth. Well, guys….here’s the mirror.

  • WOOT! PS3’s new price is awesome, definitely will save up for one. DEFINITELY. Loved Killzone 2, can’t wait for all UT, Ratchet, and all the awesome games. DAMN THEY ARE AWESOME.

  • SONY best kept secret, best news i heard from sony in a while, cant wait to see wat socom 4 looks like on ps3 hd HOORAH!!

  • Great Conference !!!
Love the new info on Home.
    Killzone looked great.
And im happy that they said again Metal Gear Solid 4 is PS3 Only!
Can’t wait to see what else is in store for this E3.

  • Uh….one more thing. Built in flash memory would be nice. An iPod Nano with 2GB of flash mem is $149? Could we have, say….put 8GB in this thing??

I have to wonder with the announcement of this refresh if there’s any inspiration in the division that’s developing the handheld. Killzone excites me. Little Big Planet, Haze, and Wipeout excite me. This doesn’t. This is about as inspired as a green Halo-branded Xbox 360.

Give me a reason to give my launch day PSP to my girl and to stand in line to get the redesigned PSP.

  • And one more thing.
Im sure people are going to start talking [DELETED] about how the redesigned PSP sucks and why would you buy it.
But when Nintendo did the same thing with the DS its great?
PSP hasn’t been out long enough to even make a new design. If they came out with a PSP with 2 analog sticks or 4 shoulder buttons why would any developer make any other game for the original PSP???
Everyone would have to buy the new version and anyone that just purchased a PSP would be screwed.

  • And one more thing.
Im sure people are going to start talking $#!t about how the redesigned PSP sucks and why would you buy it.
But when Nintendo did the same thing with the DS its great?

  • UMD still? No thanks. I’ve had enough of Sony “memory” that can only be used in sony products.

  • Umm ok nice to know we are moving foward, but where is THE GETAWAY?

  • Hold on a sec, new PSP?? I’m piss and glad at the same time here. As owner of the first PSP 1001 model. I’ve never had any problems with it, always work fine and done everything I told it. I think you guys at Sony are acting like Nintendo did with there DS. That why I never even look at it because they keep changing it. If you were going to make new model of PSP, why not build new one from the ground up. I think that this move will save PSP line up, but upset lot of PSP owner. Maybe wait until next year before bring it out, it was to early for PS3 to have new model give ya that.

Might have to fake some order for this new PSP, don’t like idea spending other $200 for the same thing.
