We’re Just Getting Started…

New Sony PSP
What a week! E3 is always an exciting time of year when we can roll up our sleeves and finally show you what we have planned for the year and beyond. As I’m sure you saw, on Monday we announced we are expanding the purchase options for PS3 by adding a new PS3 model to the market in August with an 80GB HDD. We also were able to engineer some cost savings into hardware production of PS3 and lowered the purchase price of our 60GB model by $100, effective immediately. We feel that is a substantial price reduction and hope if you haven’t purchased a PS3 yet, it will encourage you to do so. You probably also heard that we introduced a new, sleeker PSP; new features for our PlayStation Home service; and, as promised: games, games and more games.

This holiday and fiscal year more than 400 games are coming to PlayStation fans in North America. There will be over 120 PS3 titles including what we’re showing here at E3: Warhawk, Lair, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, The Eye of Judgment, PAIN, Echochrome, SOCOM: U.S. Navy Seals Confrontation, SingStar and many more. All of those are exclusive to the PS3, and those are the ones just from us. We also showed at our press conference today other exclusives from our third party partners, like Haze, Unreal Tournament 3 and the one you have been commenting so much about on this very blog, Metal Gear Solid 4.

In addition, the PSP will score more than 140 games and PS2 over 160 this year. And, if you didn’t get a chance to see the new Star Wars Battlefront PSP Entertainment Pack, be sure to check out the pictures I’ve included here with this post. The Darth Vader image on the back of the new white PSP is pretty cool, in my opinion.

Our goal right now is simple: to provide you with the most compelling gaming experience possible, and as we are showing here this week, we are well on the way to achieving that goal.

Right now is a good time to reflect and say thank you. Thank you for being passionate members of the video game community and part of the PlayStation family. The best is yet to come.

  • @kracken, your right! why is europe always last to get everything yet we pay more than the rest of the world for our games and consoles?? i seems very unfair.

it feels like you are just sat laughing at us while we wait like idiots for stuff that jap and us get long before us, then you laugh even harder once you see us paying more for games/consoles… i feel like we are having the pi$$ taken out of us and it makes me very angry.

  • I think everyone would’ve loved to have seen a new psp with internal memory and a second controller but i can see why Sony wouldn’t go through with these things.
If the new psp was a significant leap forward from the original model then you’d get a lot of grief from your already established psp fanbase. Nobody wants to feel like they have to perpetually buy a new product every couple of years as major innovations are added.
Also the 2nd controller would have a hard time integrating with all those preexisting games which don’t support it. I imagine Sony is doing some nice business with their sales of mem sticks so i think they’d prefer to just continue to increase the size of those rather than throw some internal memory in there.

The differences for the new psp are nice but there’s nothing so revolutionary that i feel i MUST purchase a new one. ACtually the prime motivating factor for me to buy a new one would be homebrew. If i have 2 of them, one of them will definitely be running all those VERY useful programs. I find it a shame Sony hasn’t shown any interest in mirroring some of the apps people have come up with.

As to the ps3? a lot of nice trailers.. I’m blown away by Littlebigplanet. Generally i avoid more kiddish games but this looks incredible. The Create trailer showed how easily expandable the game is.

As to exclusives? I think the word is getting kicked around a lot and it’s starting to lose its meaning. a 6mth delay is no problem for a Sony fan :) and usually the end product is more polished. Genuine exclusives make me feel justified for buying a system (Lair, Littlebigplanet, Warhawk) or make me feel like i’m missing out (Lost Planet, Gears of War, Dead rising). But more and more game companies are probably going to go for the wider market of multi platform releases. So in the end it’ll come down to the console itself.. and whether or not it can play games flawlessly or crash and freeze when demands are placed on the system. Who wants to place bets as to Halo 3 being the bricking game of 2007? :)

  • Sony! Please do not screw us over in UK tomorrow by NOT announcing a price cut. We already pay more then £150 more for your console than people in the US.
We need to pay £350 for this, at the most.

  • I think that I speak for everyone here, including myself: I just wanted give you guys at Sony a very hearty THANK YOU! for listening to us on keeping Metal Gear Solid: 4 a PS3 exclusive. Everyone there at Sony saw the significance in keeping this game purely for us to enjoy.

The last thing I wanted to see was Peter Moore dancing around on stage like the idiot that he is saying that he secured MGS: 4. Hideo stuck to his guns and knows a thing or 2 about loyalty to the company that helped him achieve his dream. I’m the same way. I have a strong loyalty to Sony that has never wavered and never will.

For all the electronics I have purchased throughout the years with you name on it and 3 Playstation consoles that I’ve been enjoying since day 1 (and am planning on getting the PSP soon) I can truly say that I’m happy with my PS3 and will continue to buy any more Playstations as they are released.

Again I just wanted to say thank you for not letting us down and congratulations on an incredible show yesterday afternoon.

  • Sony:

Can we get the E3 press conference on the Playstation Store?

  • Thats Great. I might buy a PSP now.

  • E3 was awesome, but I have a feeling that TGS is gonna be a huge event as well.

  • First of all i must say that I LOVE SONY and all of their products, but I have a complain: Its fabolous to read that price cut of $100, but I live in Mexico and the price of the 60 Gig version its $9600 pesos (price from Walmart), thats around 900 US dollars, so please do something to regulate your prices in Mexico and Latino America, We are Americans too!!!! and i think we are a important part of your users/customers.
I really hope you read this, and if you, please post so we latinoamerican-sony-lovers know that you are really listen to us.
    thanks.

  • @ aaquib:
i remember reading somewhere that the E3 press conf is coming to the Store tomorrow. we’ll have to wait till then to find out…

  • Sony, you rock! Keep up the fantastic work! I need more things to rub in my Xbox-owning friends.

  • Nice show Jack!

Keep the games coming and most of all make the PS Store cleaner and better.

It is very important to make the user experience exceptional and with Sony’s name being dragged in the mud by dubious individuals whose allegiance to other consoles is borderline zealotry, it’s essential to stand a part.

Take a page from Steve Jobs’ play book and make the PS3 and PSP even better through radical design changes but keeping the core the same.

  • Was really hoping for another firmware update too! Darn – still holding out for the 24hz “Force On” option!

  • Thank you for doing a great job! I havent purchased a PS3 yet but will soon. This autumn looks to be a really good time to be a ps3-owner.
You say that you “lowered the purchase price of our 60GB model by $100”, but I havent noticed that here in Sweden, are we in Europe being left behind as usually?
Another thing I havent heard anything about is a package with a PS3 and a PSP, that sounds like a good idea to me!

  • Okay if Sony were to add another analog nub and some other features, the PSP price will go up and all the people who recently bought a PSP would be screwed, the current PSP sales have jumped withen the last few weeks and they would be stupid to put, a “PSP 2” out when the PSP is going just fine, it’s just a update, like the DS Lite, Xbox Elite, PS2 Slim, ect. it’s not meant to be a “PSP 2” just to make it a little better, the PSP is just starting to grow, once the sales start drastically changing maybe we’ll see a “PSP 2” but that’s far from now.

  • WOW that was the best conference of E3 by far. You guys really delivered and shut up the 360 fanboys and the critics with Killzone 2. Like some people have said, Microsofts keynote was horrible. Sony came out after that and totally stole the show.
“We also showed at our press conference today other exclusives from our third party partners, like Haze, Unreal Tournament 3 and the one you have been commenting so much about on this very blog, Metal Gear Solid 4. ”
THANKYOU so much that MGS4 stayed PS3 exclusive. Also HAZE looks amazing great job in securing that exclusive. I dont even care that you guys lost a few exclusives like GTA4 and DMC4. The PS3 just gained 3 huge exclusives. Nice job guys! I am very pleased with everything shown, especially all the content shown game after game after game.

  • @ 265 GameBox 47

Exactly if they added anything more than they did it would be a PSP 2. Who wants a PSP 2 already when we all have PSP. This new revised PSP is like a DS lite but with a few more added features. So like a PSP Lite. Not a PSP 2.

  • Where the hell are the demos? Why is it that X-Box Live got 3 or for demos from e3, and all we got are trailers and hidden interviews? Where are the damned demos?

  • Mispelled ‘four.’ Sorry.

  • Damn, what a strong line-up. Can’t wait for it anymore. Go SONY!! :D

  • O.K. I still haven’t heard a response about the $89 dollar service fee on the broken PSP. I personally think this is uncalled for. Don’t you guys make enough money. I could see if it was the second of third time I sent it in. Now you not only have my original $300 dollars now you want more.

  • Thank you!

I look forward to picking up the new PSP Slim and would just like to say that I think the PS3 is the greatest console ever. Im still blown away by Killzone 2, I still cant believe it was real.

Oh and Jack Tretton, you did look nervous :P BUT I thought you did a fantastic job at the press conference. People are really appreciating the new humble Sony.

I will look forward to TGS now. I hope Sony has an equally good show there.

    :)

  • Great job, Jack. This kind of E3 conference and approach is what we as gamers would all wanted to see from Sony and have waited to see for many years. I really appreciate the sincerity and dedication to the platforms you guys have shown and with the Killzone 2 presentation, you guys let the game do the talking and it delivered in spades. Keep up the good work!!!

  • Thank you Sony and Hideo Kojima for keeping MGS4 exclusive, and of course, it isn’t just some stupid time exclusive…right?

Very good job at E3 guys, keep it up.

  • A great presentation Sony! The best of E3. Sony simple has the best line-up on the market. MGS4 and Killzone 2 (I am from Holland so I’m very proud of Guerilla) blew away every 360 game.

Jack, you did a great job! Very relaxed, very clear and very professional. Really plesant performance.

But, I have one question. Why isn’t there going to be a price-cut in Europe on the PS3?

  • Just one more question. :)
I missed Formula 1 2007. Is this game still coming or did Sony loose the exclusive rights?

  • Hey, I have a idea for you people at Sony regarding the PSP.

I would think it would be wonderful if you created a USB attachment for the PSP that would add motion control, like the SIXAXIS controller. Nintendo did this with a couple games on the Game Boy, but those where built in the cartridge. But I was thinking, a small USB device that could add motion control for the PSP would be awesome. I’m sure you could do it, I know you can. It would be awesome with Loco Roco!

Also… When are we getting the Camera and GPS in the USA? I would gladly purchase those if they came over here…

Thanks for everything you have given us so far, its only getting better. The games you have for the PSP and PS3 are awesome and the PS3 hasn’t even seen a full year yet. I can not wait to see what advancements in the games and the software you’ll have for us next year. Thanks again so much, its been fun.

  • Jack I was wondering if Sony is considering a PS Store redesign at all?

  • shouldn’t you guys LOWER the price of the psp/new psp to around $140? The DSL is $130 after all, which is one reason its selling like crazy obviously. i think sales will increase more if its at 140. i’m referring to the NON bundled versions of course, just the stand alone box.

  • Excellent E3 showing, keep the momentum going!

Can someone from SCEA clarify what Reeves is talking about concering the 60GB SKU??

Is the 60GB gonna be phased out and the 80GB SKU with Motorstorm is gonna replace it or is there gonna be an 80 GB SKU without Motorstorm than will still be $499????

    I’m confused……..

  • Thanks sbf, I was just about to post that. Hoping we can get some official word here.

  • Tretton, I thought I’d let you in on what your peer is saying:
“All they’re doing is taking their stock in trade that they’ve got at the moment of the 60GB model, marking the price down and it will all be gone by the end of July.”
So this price cut is really a hardware clear out sale? Care to come clean?

  • I figure that the 60 gig has about 1 mill units out in stores in the US.

Sony gonna sell out of those at 499 then when all thats left are 80 gig PS3s those will drop in price and perhaps a bigger HDD will be released and so on and so on.

  • For me I just want more trailers for KILLZONE on the PS3 ive seen that there is more footage shown at E3 and I hope Sony puts that footage on the Playstation Store please.

I think this is the best deal for people to jump on and get theirs while they last.

What exactly are you getting started to do Mr. Tretton? Why is Sony running itself into the ground?

  • why dont people get whats going on its just getting rid of backstock to give a bigger better device that will soon be the same price by the end of the year

  • There is no evidence at all that it will be $500

  • so what are you sherlock homes I dont think you are but if you were you would see the bussiness clue and then get one.

    so sherlock solve the mystery.

  • im sorry I think I should apologize for that last comment.

Im just tired of the constant bickering on the Web and wish I could do a news search and find something cool and interesting happening in gaming.

Instead its OMG they did this and that and the other so what.

complain to your moms and just give gaming news.

  • Hi 1st time comment blogger long time sony fan is it true that SCEE president David Reeves has told GamesIndustry.biz that the 60GB PlayStation 3 will no longer be available in the US after stock sells out – which he predicts will occur by the end of the month.

  • I don’t know if anyone that maters is going to read this but I found this story tonight and what to know if its true.
    http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=26702
According to the article the 60 gig is discontinued as soon as stock is gone. If this is true, please tell me why you would go out of your way to shoot yourselves in the foot like this. The 60 gig is flying off shelves at $499 (can’t find one anywhere in my city and many online retailers are out as well) so why go back? All this stands to do is drive people away from the PS3. If this isn’t true, it looks like some firing needs to be done.

  • Would you please answer the above. Is this a case of you misleading us again?

  • Yup, Jonsend check out http://atvs.vg.no/player/?id=10235

To save you time, skip up ahead to about 1:40 and listen to Kaz Hirai tell you in plain English what Sony is doing. Essentially, if you don’t want to watch they ARE doing what post 293 is telling you about. They are basically spitting in their loyal customers’ face.

  • in the name of GOD sony what the hell are you doing?????? you lower the price of the 60gb version just to get your stock empty and ready for the 80gb version???? so the price cut is temporary??

after all these good news you guys come with this? geezzzz you guys are making you own grave.

  • I think you guys did a great job with the press conference. Certainly the most entertaining of the 3 (although Nintendo was pretty fun to watch also).

I believe that you showed your dedication to the gaming community by providing proof of remaining exclusives, welcome additions to Home’s functionality (jumping into games), and a wealth of online options coming our way this year.

Sony really knows how to do an pre-E3 press conference. Every year you get me hyped up for the future of gaming with the Playstation brands. My only complaint was the lack of PSP games displayed at the conference. I understand the need to push the PS3 by providing reasons to want one (other than Blu-ray support), but I felt that my beautiful little black paperweight is going to remain on the shelf collecting dust.

I was really expecting to see some PSP to PS3 connectivity annoucements. I was dissapointed in the lack of those.

Overall, I believe you did a great job at showing people why Sony has been the leader for the past two generations. Kudos on a job well done. Enjoy your last few days in Santa Monica and have safe trips home.

  • WHAT? You build a 60GB PS3. It doesn’t sell, so you lower the price, so it’s starts selling so you stop producing the 60GB version? I fail to see logic in that one, sorry…

People only look 1 thing: PRICE (and not how big is a hard drive…)

  • Oh man , SONY execs just do not speak the language of the customer.

You said it yourself during the conference . People want TWO things.
A lower price AND a good games library.

we DO NOT want crappy bundles shoved down our throats. Please reconcider what you are doing here or we have all just witnessed the beginning of the end of playstation .

    R.I.P. Playstation.

    KEEP THE 499,- Price.

  • WTF? ARE YOU SERIOUS!? What you Sony guys should have done is slowly phase out the EE chip in the 60GB PS3s, therefore making them cheaper to produce and give you (possibly) a continued profit into the holidays. WHen holiday time comes, THEN phase out the 60GB PS3s and lower the price for the 80GB PS3s. That way, you’d have your larger hard drive space satisfied and us consumers continue to get our cheaper PS3s. Makes sense, right?

But for the love of all that we believe to be holy, don’t shoot yourselves in the foot! Introducing a lower priced 60GB PS3 for the sole purpose of clearing out the inventory for a higher-priced, larger hard drive model won’t work! You guys tried something similar before w/ the 20GB PS3s, look how well that turned out for you guys.

    End of speech.

  • Quite frankly I’m disgusted!

I’m a 37 year old gamer, have been working as a CG artist in the industry for over 15 years (including working for Sony) and have for as long as I can remember been a supporter of Sony (my TV, hi fi, phone, console etc. are all Sony branded) But I’ve been holding off on a next gen (although I suppose it’s now current gen) purchase until I could make an informed decision.

The sad, sad news of no price cut in the UK made up my mind. This morning I went and purchased a 360 and am glad I did so.

Adding an additional controller (I don’t need one) plus 2 games that I’m not the least bit interested in (one of which I worked on) and then hiking up the price is not a price cut as far as I’m concerned. In fact it’s a bloody insult. Better get your act together Sony!….you’ve already lost me as a loyal customer now but if you’re not careful you’ll alienate a large proportion of what once used to be a loyal fan base.

Why have you decided to treat the UK (and Australia) like second rate consumers when you openly described these as territories being important?! – important to fund the rest of your world pricing polices maybe, but certainly not important from a loyal customer perspective.

Colour me disgusted, annoyed and just a little bit sad……
