Firmware 1.90 Coming Soon

903 0

UPDATE: The Firmware 1.90 update is available now; I’ve also included an update below that addresses some of your comments here.

Firmware 1.90 brings with it several new features, many of which readers of this blog have requested – I’m happy to report.

Customization is one new feature: you can now personalize the wallpaper on your XMB with a photo. This was one of the top three requests we received via the blog’s contact form. When viewing a photo, simply bring up the options screen by pressing the triangle button and selecting “set as wallpaper” from the options displayed. Additionally, you can now change the order of the games displayed under the game icon on the XMB.

Another new feature focuses on added communication elements: When you’re sending messages to friends on PLAYSTATION Network, you can now use emoticons. We’ve added a bunch of emoticons that can be easily accessed from the virtual keyboard. Also, another cool addition is, when an avatar is displayed during voice/video chat, the avatar will move in response to audio.

Finally, on the more technical side, you can now play AVCHD videos saved on a Memory Stick or digital video camera, and we’ve added the ability to upscale audio CD output from your PS3. Now, there are two requirements for this feature: the device you’re outputting to must support a sampling frequency of 88.2 kHz or 176.4 kHz, and your PS3 must be connected to that device with an HDMI cable or digital optical cable.

Oh, and one more thing: you can now eject discs using your controller by selecting “Eject Disc” in the options menu after you push the PS button.

Several other minor options will be included in 1.90 including a few new display options that will allow you to adjust your display while playing PlayStation, PlayStation2 and Blu-ray movies.

We’re working on additional features for our next update that will incorporate more of your feedback, so as always thanks for all of your support, and please keep those suggestions coming!

[UPDATE]
The link on the SCEA website is now live, you can get the full info on firmware 1.90 here. Also, I noticed a lot of your comments were directly related to accessing XMB features in-game. We understand this is something you want and we are working on it. For the sake of keeping all the comments below on topic, please understand that we hear this request and are working toward a solution. When I have some more info to share on this, know that I will do so here on this blog.

Now, with all of that said, thanks for the feedback. I decided to address some of the consistent comments in the body of this post instead of within the comments. One thing you have noticed is that under sorting your games, when you sort by creation date, it sorts by the date you downloaded the content. Sorting videos is done by the date that the videos were added to your hard drive. You can also ‘go-to’ a specific time in any of the videos on your HDD, by hitting triangle and then selecting the specific time from the clock at the bottom.

Something a few of you have noticed as well is that you don’t need to have the SIXAXIS controller connected to PS3 through the USB cable anymore to complete the update, which I know is something some of you were asking for.

  • keyboard mapping to controller buttons please? Especially in the web browser!!

  • This is a really fantastic update that Sony is releasing! In Eric’s update he clearly states that Sony is hearing what we all have to say and they are delivering for us. I love this blog because it lets the company know what we want and then the consumer can then give a response! This is just 1.9 guys. Imagine 2.0 and what that will bring us, all that is coming was definatly worth the wait. Quality over quantity guys. I can only imagine that in game XMB access will be in the next major update. ***So psyched*** Thanks Sony for the input and for listening.

  • The fact that they wont even comment on it is bothering me. Maybe it cant be done…

  • After Playlists….
How about using the PSP as a remote control for the PS3’s Music.

Mp3 player with visual remote without having to have the TV on!!!!
(if you own an Amp, or feed into a stereo)

  • Wow, these updates sound great! I can’t wait! Very much looking forward to it.

Keep up the good work! It really is greatly appreciated. =)

  • Ah, perfect. I was just noting to myself last week how I would like to categorize or couple games into different folders or be able to rearrange the order. As for the XMB pictures and other technical additions, they’re outstanding, glad they’re on their way.

  • Would it be possible to give manual options for the partition size between the PS3 and Other OS? I’ve put a 120GB drive in mine, and I’d like to be able to go 60/60 rather than 10/110 or 110/10. That’s all I want.

Thanks for all the great work!

  • this is a cool update. Still waiting for a ps3 headset made by sony.

  • Well it’s not XMB in game, but I could care less. I expect it in 2.0, but 1.9 great update! People XMB IN GAME IS NOT EASY you know how much they have to test on every game to make sure it works right? It’s a lot more than you think.

    Anyways, great update guys!

  • There are still many things that could be improved :

    Games :

    – Disable HDCP protection for games.

    Images :

    – Support of Bitmap

    Internet :

    – Better websites compatibility

    Playstation Network :

    – Updated demos and games for everyone at the same time (not JP/US first)

    Videos :

    – Support of .AVI files encoded with x264 codec

    – XviD support (it prevents from installing Linux to do so)

    Audio :

    – OGG Vorbis support

  • Yes we can finally set are own backgrounds. Good because I’ve gotten a little tired of the default backgrounds.

  • @109
Thats the beauty of Ps3, you can use ANY BT headset.

  • great update, lookin forward to it.

    @TheApprentice
trini’s for life. I’m sure in time they will account for us, if not make another account in the mean time.

  • Excellent, thank you!

    I’ll be buying a PS3 very soon.

  • It never ceases to amaze me, you people will never ever be satisfied. Sony could give you the moon and you would complain because they didn’t give you the stars.

Anyway, great update Sony. Thanks for giving us the heads up. Glad to see you continuing this blog.

  • …and thank you for listining to us. Please keep listening.

  • Finally Wallpapers! I can now go crazy with my imagination now!

But I wish you could change the icons too, that should be something really cool, to have FULL customization of your XMB, I have seen pictures of PSPs having that option by some “means”, and I have to say, it’s fantastic. If those guys can do it, I bet you guys at Sony can do it too, but now on the PS3.

  • The web browser need flash player 9 support I think. I don’t see how in game XMB access is nessecary so please get these people to shut up by giving them the update they want.

  • Now all we need is XMB in-game and Custo Soundtracks in-game. Please Sony please.

  • suggestions:
    – ps3 support divx /avi format
    – be able to view all the games your buddy has on your friends list if there on or offline.
    – voice chat messaging is a must (text is really old fashion)
    – be able to view your friends list and send messages while your in game by pressing the PS button

thats all i can think of at the moment but i know there is a ton more here

  • Slightly disappointing, as usually Sony deliver Uberfeatures.

When we ask for user wallpaper, they deliver Wallpaper that does DreamScene moving backgrounds,

When we ask for sorting, they give us tagging and sorting Picasa style.

  • IN-GAME XMB

    CUSTOM SOUNDTRACKS

    thanks

  • Keep um coming Sony! Great news..

  • @CrimsonCalibur

Well they said the wanted us to tell them improvements so…I am not complaining.

    @Sony

I would like to access the PS3 hard drive from a attached computer (I can not believe anyone did not say this before) so I do not have to put the USB key back and forth everytime. (Like a mapped drive or something like that)

I am not sure this is possible right now. Otherwise, how do you people copy all of your files to your PS3?

It is certainly easier with a media server but not ALL the files can be copied.

  • just to add to the repetitive list:

in game xmb, with ability to play music in a game

Im sure your working on it and your just keeping it secret right

  • I still don’t see why everyone wants in-game XMB access or custom soundtracks… They just don’t seem that important to me. And in-game messaging has already been done, which was pretty much all that was left on my list besides expanding on the file formats supported by the PS3.

    Also @ Delriach…
The reason that the PS3 disconnects while starting/playing PS2 games is that the games themselves are running off of the PS2 hardware (The Emotion Engine). Now if they were to change all the PS3 over to straight emulation it might be possible to not only to stay on the network while playing a PS2 game, but it might also mean that we wouldn’t have to re-sync the controller after starting a game. Of course, this is all just speculation.

Anywho, great job Eric and everyone else at SCE

  • @Sony

Goood Job guys! You are really trying hard to get these updates up as soon as possible. The only things I want are XMB in game like messages and such. Also, I want Music in game but XMB in Game comes first.

  • Thanks, Keep ’em coming guys!

  • Thats awesome, now if only we had in game XMB and custom sound tracks. That would make the PS3 PERFECT!!!

  • This is absolutely fantastic. I’m still WISHING for FLAC audio support. Open codecs are the way to go!

  • Great job Sony keep the updates coming.

I wont ask for XMB access or Ingame music because I really do not care and it is not like you guys dont know by now that owners want it.

But I am having a issue with a bluetooth headset I am using. it will be fully charged but sometimes it just looses a connection with the PS3. its not a deal breaker but it can be really annoying to have to leave the game and resynchronize it.

Once again keep up the great work and thanks for reading in and giving people what they want.

  • IN GAME XMB PLS PLS PLS PLS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • All very good, very very good!!

Next BIG wish: XMB from the games!!!
Next BIG wish: XMB from the games FTW!
Next BIG wish: use the XBM from the games!!!

Those are my 3 next big wish ;P Oh, i forgot: i’d like to use the XMB while i’m playing, from the games i mean :D

    Thanks Sony ;)

  • the ps3 dev kits have in game xmb so i would assume that it cant be to hard to have it in retail versions

also custom sound tracks is a must have sony and microsoft are saying these are multi-media entertainment systems but nither are doing it properly at the moment
but sony seems to be doing a much beter job than microsoft.

i orderd my ps3 a few days ago so it hasnt arived yet but iv herd that they dont work properly with macs is this true and if so is sony planing on fixing it because that would be verry annoying
its bad enough that my xbox 360 requires me to buy an application in order to work without having to do the same for ps3

  • Sounds like a fun update.
    Very grateful for updates.

Some things I need to see in future updates:
    1. in-game XMB
    2. Music (stored on HDD) playback during game. I’d LOVE to listen to my music during MotorStorm or Madden : )
    3. AVI VIDEO file playback. I don’t care about AVI IMAGE (motion jpeg) files, I want my quality AVI files to play on my PS3! : )

Finally: attach video or music files to messages in the friends chat section. sharing is caring : ) lol

thanks for update tho : )

  • So still no upscaling ps3 games from 720 to 1080?
just shamefull, and amazing that you guys are willing to accept this number of lost potential sales:
    http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=770141

    just sad

  • As everyone else is saying…in game XMB access and cross game invites!

  • Awesome! THIS is the update I’ve been waiting for.

Being able to put the wallpaper you want has been a big deal for me.

The other thing I’d really love to see which is also a big deal is being able to play your own soundtracks in games like MotorStorm and such….I mean that’d be one of the coolest things you guys could do.

  • I’d love to see a full ISO-8859-2 or UTF-8 polish character set support. It’s getting kinda freaky reading my polish forum/news site. It should be fairy simple. Also please fix AJAX issues with the browser. It seem to not support some of the features AJAX is offering, resulting in a “Bad Request”.
