Yes, The Heavenly Sword Demo is Coming …

Posted by Kyle Shubel // Managing Producer, International Software Development

Heavenly Sword Box Art

Hi, this is Kyle, I’m a producer here at SCEA’s Santa Monica Studios. One of the titles I am working on, and quite frankly playing most often, is Heavenly Sword. I’ve read a lot of your comments on this blog about this title and I’m happy to confirm the reports that we’ll have a downloadable demo coming this week to the PLAYSTATION Store.

The complete game is still set for September, but I think you’ll find this demo is a great sample of what’s in store and it’ll certainly give you a good idea of the look and feel of the game. To set the stage here, at the beginning of this demo, our heroine, Nariko, gains consciousness after a violent encounter with the evil King Bohan and his army. Nariko learns that Bohan is holding her father, Shen, prisoner inside a massive temple complex so she sets out to fulfill her destiny and embarks on a quest for vengeance against the invading King and his army.

Keep a lookout for the demo on the PLAYSTATION Store this week, I’m anxious to read what you guys think of it.

5 mins is fine, what do you expect from a demo? lol

452

thechosenfew88  |  July 26th, 2007 at 11:26 am

@40cal

Give me some good feedback bro. And point out the amazing things of the game, and not just the 5 mins issue and it running on 720p….lol

453

40cal  |  July 26th, 2007 at 11:28 am

Running on 720 is a good thing. For me anyway.

454

thechosenfew88  |  July 26th, 2007 at 11:34 am

@40cal

Doesn’t matter to me. My HDTV supports 720p, so I’m straight, and will be picking this game up first day! And I haven’t played the demo yet…. :-)

455

leetfoo  |  July 26th, 2007 at 11:37 am

720p = lazy. Perhaps you guys need to spend some time with real devs (Factor 5) and learn how to use your system.

THIS GAME IS OVER HYPED!!!

LOL @ SONY EMPLOYESS TRYING TO HYPE SOMETHING THAT MEDICORE.

haldalish  |  July 26th, 2007 at 11:39 am

Game is so awesome. lovin it. here are a few things that need finished though. Framerate, screen tearing, jittery shadows. fix that and the game is going to be amazing. also it seemed like the cutscenes were compressed

Wasja  |  July 26th, 2007 at 11:40 am

Some fun things to try out in the demo from the Heavenly Sword blog.

deadxbabiesxinc  |  July 26th, 2007 at 12:07 pm

demos are ALWAYS too short. And considering its a demo and not the finished game…i think people are being a bit too critical of something people we’re demanding for soooo long.

462

Enedok  |  July 26th, 2007 at 12:21 pm

Ow, that hurts. I loved it and starting to get hang on the combos and the aftertuch and then i see three guys break out of the door and boom. Comes out september.

Sorry, but that hurts. It hurts weary much Kyle. Dont do that again. Have at least a proper ending etc; lets go to the next place kind of ending.

463

West End Matt  |  July 26th, 2007 at 12:31 pm

I thought it was a nice little teaser, myself. I’ll need to get the hang of the combos and the stance thingy but am slowly getting it. I can just tell this game is going to be HUGELY epic and can’t wait for it to come out

464

haldalish  |  July 26th, 2007 at 12:38 pm

i just gotta say, this game is freaking awesome. counter system is the best i have ever seen in a game.

please just smooth out the framerate. day one purchase for me, thanks ninja theory

465

haldalish  |  July 26th, 2007 at 12:40 pm

actually just make it 60 fps and it will be my fav action game ever

466

thechosenfew88  |  July 26th, 2007 at 12:43 pm

@deadxbabiesxinc

I agree. I think most people raised high expectations on this demo alone. (Guess cuz we barely get any, we wouldn’t know how long or short they should be)…. I’m joking! Don’t take me serious Sony. :-) We should just base the demo on its gameplay value, and not the LENGTH of the demo. Don’t forget about the graphics also!

467

juanleche  |  July 26th, 2007 at 12:48 pm

Wow a title this big and the devs are willing to accept a big loss in sales due to it not upscaling, irresponsible business tactics, this game wont sell as well as it could have because of this and thats just sad

PS3_GAM3R  |  July 26th, 2007 at 12:51 pm

I felt like I was at Disneyland and waited 1 hour (thats how how it took to DL) in line for a new ride at the theme park. The next thing you know the ride only lasted about 5 mins. It is all good though I guess. The game, or should I say the short Demo is awesome nothing the less. The graphics are good, the gameplay is going to be badd ass once I get the hang of it. Some of the counter movies are just jaw dropping!! I will get this game on day 1! Just don’t go to sleep guys, and fix everything that needs to be fixed, so we have a great game come Sept. 2007!!!

469

Jimb0c  |  July 26th, 2007 at 12:58 pm

It’s a demo of a build that is over 2 months old at this point.

The game has already changed significantly since that time (the E3 version for example), it looks better, runs smoother among many other things.

470

Patriot04  |  July 26th, 2007 at 12:58 pm

this are great news = )

471

PS3_GAM3R  |  July 26th, 2007 at 12:59 pm

Oh yeah one more thing..people should NOT judge the game solely on this DEMO! Who cares it is only 5 min…it’s better than nothing. If people think like that, because of the length they are really, really dumb!!!

472

Rockyrainier  |  July 26th, 2007 at 1:08 pm

I just spent 45 mins with this game learning the combos and I have to say it well worth the wait. Don’t expect perfection but mark my words, this game is a 9/10 game. The game play, the story, the action and the graphics are just simply amazing. I am intrigued.

However, there are some downsides like everything else. Frame rate is a little bit slow but still enjoyable, I prefer anti-aliasing and 30fps than 60fps with jaggies. I was expecting the second analog stick for the camera cause i’m so used to oblivion but that’s ok, I can live without it.

Over all, great work. This is the reason why I bought the PS3 for the action adventure and RPG games. I am not a fan of FPS but killzone 2 might change that. Will buy on day one : )

474

thechosenfew88  |  July 26th, 2007 at 1:18 pm

The trailer, or the game play video Kojima demonstrated at their 20th anniversary?

475

sectionz  |  July 26th, 2007 at 1:21 pm

478

thechosenfew88  |  July 26th, 2007 at 1:24 pm

Thats awesome. Can’t wait to see the MGS4 game play video on the HDTV! Thanks Sony for putting that up..

479

AwRy108  |  July 26th, 2007 at 1:33 pm

Thanks for the awesome, albeit short, demo of Heavenly Sword. Now, question: why is it that the XBox 360 gets multiple demos per month, while PS3 owners, each of which has a HDD, get one demo per month AT BEST. Seriously, what gives? Case in point: where in the heck is the demo for “The Darkness” that we were promised?

I don’t want to sound like a whiner, but really: why do we get 4-6 movie trailers every week ON OUR GAME MACHINES, but only one demo every few weeks?

480

West End Matt  |  July 26th, 2007 at 1:37 pm

Went through the demo again and tried a few things. Did you know you can roll over debris, dropped weapons and even enemy corpses pick them up and hurl them at the on coming enemy??? Pretty cool

481

sectionz  |  July 26th, 2007 at 1:40 pm

i want MORE .. there has to be more .. the download we a whole Gig .. no way 5 minutes is a gig because that means the the game would be less than 2 hours long ;)

how do i unlock more sony tell me … or do i have to go back to sleep and wait until september?

482

Deviation  |  July 26th, 2007 at 1:42 pm

“Wow a title this big and the devs are willing to accept a big loss in sales due to it not upscaling, irresponsible business tactics, this game wont sell as well as it could have because of this and thats just sad”

That’s just flat-out retarded. A game won’t lose any noticeable sales due to being 720p instead of 1080p. You’re just being a troll. Or a tool. Or both.

483

leetfoo  |  July 26th, 2007 at 1:47 pm

@490 the number of users unwilling to accept half ass programming is growing every day, as is public awareness about many HDTVs not supporting 720p and the PS3 not scaling. You’ve lost my sale, and I’m not the only one.

484

tielo  |  July 26th, 2007 at 1:51 pm

Demo was short but sweet. And it looks stunning!

485

xenix  |  July 26th, 2007 at 2:19 pm

The demo got so big because of the spoken foreign languages you can choose. Pretty sweet, Nariko speaking Danish… :)

486

NAZAR  |  July 26th, 2007 at 2:23 pm

@AwRy108 Do american ppl so stupid that even can’t register Euro account to get darkness demo?

487

illegalprelude  |  July 26th, 2007 at 2:29 pm

Thanks alot for the Demo. Its nice to see the Playstation store finally getting some leg with videos and trailers and Demo’s. I think those who are complaining about the lack of content compared to the 360 did not have the 360 from launch time.

At that time, we complained about not much being on live. It makes sense for a store to grow, you cant just expect it to just suddenly have as much content. Also, as users grow for the PS3, you will see more content support from others too. Its just natural.

FATAL-STRIKE  |  July 26th, 2007 at 2:37 pm

This game was woth the wait….. Im thinkin it may be better than GOD OF WAR..SO FAR… Great demo though…. But, I ask for one thing dont make the game in 720p only.. pleaseeee… Put 1080 on it… I love the Game… Good Chit Sony…

489

eksMAN  |  July 26th, 2007 at 2:40 pm

TylerOwnsYou1986  |  July 26th, 2007 at 2:50 pm

I just got done playing the demo Kyle. I dont think words can describe what this game is going to be. The SuperStyles Are amazing as well theyway it goes kinda like into a cut scene looks freaking amazing. By the way Nariko look sexy as hell. Ninja Theory as a hit on their hands :).

491

thechosenfew88  |  July 26th, 2007 at 2:54 pm

@eksMAN

I’m sure this isn’t the only demo that was long to download and quick to get through the “demo”. What did you expect? Thats why I don’t set high expectations from other people. Thats the problem with this world. (Or say part of the problem).

492

FATAL-STRIKE  |  July 26th, 2007 at 3:05 pm

Just to let everyone know, the reason why the demo was so big, is that the game has so much detail that the more detail the more memory it gonna take up.(and the better the graphics are gonna look).. That why they said this game wouldnt be possible if it wasnt for the PlayStation3 Bluray… That just show how much work it take to make a game look that good and see how much memory it takes up and that why u only got like 5 to 8 mins of gameplay. And with a dvd u woulndt have a game like Heavenly Sword… So yall cant get mad jus be glad they gave u a chance to play it, because they could of made u wait to buy the game… All i got to say to the developers is that yall did damn good on the game, just cant wait to buy it….

TylerOwnsYou1986  |  July 26th, 2007 at 3:21 pm

(this is my second comment in 15 min) I really wanna know who that character is at the beginning. who is she? What Role does she have in the game? Is her imaginary pet really just imaginary or can we just not see it? By the way this is my fourth time playing through this wonderful demo. Will you guys quit acting like [DELETED] [DELETED] talking about the 360 here as well this blog does not have anything to do with the 360 you guys are so disrespectful its not even funny matter fact im ashamed to be posting my posts on here with such disrespectful people. Post your ps3 questions on Eric Lampels Blog post. Not on Kyles you idiots.

494

TylerOwnsYou1986  |  July 26th, 2007 at 3:25 pm

Im interested in finding out who that girl is at the beginning of the game. Who is she? What role does she play in the game? Is her Imaginary pet or person really imaginary(number one thing i want to find out). Must i add that most of you guys are really disrespectful ass holes. Posting about the xbox360 on kyles blog asking about why we only get 1 demo per month wtf is wrong with you idiots. this is just one out of the many most anticipated games coming out for the ps3. Keep the ps3 questions on Eric’s blog post you guys. Not here.

DirtyHands  |  July 26th, 2007 at 3:36 pm

Aaaaahhhh my thirst for more combo kills have been answered…..The cinematic kills are my fav’. Although its only the demo I am practicing all combos. My fav’ is the one I have named the “BALL-SPLITTER” its when the main character goes low on several enemies around her and looks to be as if she has just amputated them all then she splits her main target enemy legs open then comes down with brutal force between his “NADS” then it cuts back to original gameplay. If you haven’t tried some of the combos please do…the break to cinematic kills are tight as well as the graphics….Goood L@@king out

Sony, Ninja Theory, and anybody else involved in giving us this Heavenly Sword demo now and the full game soon THANK YOU! I appreciate any demos we can get! even some that I might not really want but with a free demo I’ll check any game out.. It also helps me since I find many games I just cant play due to annoyingly overcomplicated control schemes so demos are always nice!

as for Heavenly Sword? Like most I’m really looking forward to the full game and this demo is great! sure its short but its fun and the controls are decent after getting use to them a bit.. lots of different attack options! great stuff! I learned what I needed out of this demo so it works for me..

as for the display issues?? WAAAHHHH! get over it people! sure they should support 1080p and all that but since the game has been in development for so long there is probably a good reason they stuck to 720p for this one and maybe there will be a patch later.. but you know what? the game itself is FUN! isnt that the important thing? it also looks great in standard def on my crappy TV not even really a good SDTV and it looks nice! yes Iknow my poor PS3 deserves better but I cant get the HDTV it deserves right now so it will have to wait unfortunately..

Anyway.. good stuff! thanks for the demo and I’m going to pre-order the game now..

Awesome demo, must have game. However the demo was way too short. It took me 20x longer to download the demo then it did to complete it. No good.

But still worth it. Thank you :)

Awesome Demo Guys Definitly a Teaser gotta buy the game now.

Lotsoguns  |  July 26th, 2007 at 5:13 pm

You guys must of thought it would be a good idea to release a demo with only 5 MINUTES of gameplay, just a taste right? Wrong. Lets look at the word demo, which is short for DEMONSTRATION. Something thats supposed to show and sell the product to the consumer. What you did is squeeze out a streaming nugget that lacks enough gameplay for the consumer to get a idea of the game, and to top it off it doesn’t even support the 1080p resolution that the Sony PS3 brags about so much. This isnt the first time a demo put a sour taste in everyones mouth, remember motorstorm? Demo was terrible and people are not willing to plunk down 60$ for a game they can’t get a accurate demonstration of. Remember Mr. Developers, you can claim the full version is much better but people won’t care after playing the turd demo thinking thats what the full version is more of.
