On Tuesday night we partied at the Ritz Carlton Tokyo in celebration of Metal Gear’s twentieth birthday. With friends and business colleagues gathered from around the world, we used the 20th Anniversary Party to announce a few new products, host a live concert and display tons of Metal Gear memorabilia. But really, the big event was Hideo Kojima’s real-time gameplay presentation of Metal Gear Solid 4. This presentation will be available for download over at the PlayStation Store today in all its fifteen minute, high-def glory. In the video, Mr. Kojima provides narration in Japanese with English subtitles.
Now, it’s no secret that we’re pushing the graphical capabilities of the PS3, but the emphasis with our latest video really is MGS4’s next-gen gameplay. Solid Snake may be getting up in age, but we prove that you can still teach an Old Snake new tricks — OctoCamo to help blend into the environment, Solid Eye to analyze the state of the dynamic battlefield, the drum can attack, full SIXAXIS support along with a totally reworked and intuitive control scheme… There’s plenty of new stuff to help give you all an idea of how the game will play when it ships early next year.
At the event Tuesday night, we also debuted Metal Gear Online for PS3! The attendees were able to see the game in action in our ten minute demonstration. This is a game we’ve been working on nonstop since our first entry into online competitive gaming with MGS3: Subsistence, and so far it’s a blast to play. Look for more on this soon!
And let’s not forget about Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Plus — we showed off the first trailer for this multiplayer-focused PSP title that we’ve been working on in secret since the original Portable Ops launched to worldwide success. You can grab that trailer here.
Lastly, we announced a brand new PSP title — the Japanese version of Metal Gear Solid 2: Digital Graphic Novel. This is a title I’m particularly excited about since it’s an awesome way to revisit the story of MGS2, now through the eyes of Solid Snake. (If you’re pumped for MGS4, do me a favor and brush up on your MGS2 knowledge — you won’t regret it.) I hope to have an official announcement regarding the North American and Europe versions of this game soon.
Let me close by saying that I speak for the entire team here at Kojima Productions that we appreciate your support and hope that this gameplay video for the PS Store gets you excited for Metal Gear Solid 4’s upcoming release.

Ryan… thank you. *swoons* Can’t wait for !MGS4!/MGO/MGS2 Digital Graphic Novel/MGS: Portable Ops Plus
That MGS4 demonstration blew my hype for this game up to new levels that I didn’t even know existed. I’m really loving the new gameplay mechanics. Especially that drum can attack + girly magazine to help stop vommiting.
Yeah, early 2008 seems a lot farther away now.

The game looked amazing. It really is the old snake, but with many many new tricks and equips.
My eyes were leaking of hunny and my mouth drooled while watching that demostration. Truly a spectacular game coming (Hideo and his team really knows how to make very intresting and different games. still when they keep on going the mgs series they renew something to make it stand out from the last one, truly amazing!).

nothing to get worked up about, very bad animation, low res textures and low poly count, clunky interface, not realistic at all. whats with all the gay innuendo’s?

i watched the ‘demo’ on my pc many time and now i get to appreciate it on my tv - awesome!
i have to agree that the gameplay exceeds anything i’ve ever seen (taking Sneak on a trip in a dynamic war-zone should be a blast)
keep it up guys (and give us some video for MGO please)

As much as Sony is pissing me off this generation and as much as Sony are continually showing they don’t give a rat’s ass about their fans……..
I want this game.

When can we expect the demo to hit PSN for us to PLAY? It looks AMAZING, and its easily one of my most anticipated games! So….maybe a demo around Christmas on PSN? Also, will the MGO beta hit North America as well, I think all of the PS3 owners in this region would LOVE this, as MGS is the main reason most people bought a PS3 so early.

@Zaku & @ t0Ken
Rubbish updates about PSP colours….
The constant lack of demos that Xbox Live has that PSN doesn’t…..
It’s been over two weeks and Sony *still* has not addressed the pricing bait and switch……
I was gunning for Sony to “win” E3.
Now I just want them to fess up to their business malpractices.

Nephlabobo | July 27th, 2007 at 9:10 am
BTW - I don’t just want ….. I *demand* to know whether the 20th Anniversary MGS set that is being released in Japan is being released in North America.
I want answers. Now.

new_age_soldier | July 27th, 2007 at 10:02 am
It’s blu-ray!!! I hope they add MGO to the same disc, hell please give Hideo the double laired Blu-ray disc! That would be awesome! Also Hideo SHOULD program rumble on to that game still, just so when the rumble sixaxis does come out, we can get an even better gaming experience and this is the final MGS!

I will definitely buy a PS3 as soon as the game is out!!!!
By the way, I hope the MPO+ will have a new story mode to continue the story of the original MPO

MGS4 is only possible on the PS3, no matter what the 360 fans say its coming. But think about it with the failure rate they have we don’t even know if there are actually 10 million consoles out there and MS refuses to release the numbers. Ryan i just want to say that i would pay anything to play MGS4

This is the reason why i bought the ps3!
I just wanna ask you something, maybe you and your team can put spanish subtitles like you did in mgs3 subsistence.
Thanks for your attention and greetings from Mexico.

“WTF SONY? why do we get a crappy demo?”
Common dude , thats the opinion of a kotaku guy.
Form your own opinion
Play the demo and then use your own words to describe it
The job of game journalism is like this
“All games are crap except the ones from nintendo”
All gaming sites are worshiping Nintendo
Common…

@Darkendless
I just lost every respect I had to you man. I am from Argentina and Spanish is the second (If I remember correctly) language most spoken in the world.
So your comment is out of line.
And besides that, I am really proud because I can speak two languages. I believe you are so self center you do not even think you need another language.
Man you pissed me off. In revenue we might not be that important as the US or Europe but we represent a big part of the industry.

I couldn’t care less about the MGS:PO+ since I still haven’t unsealed my MGS:PO game since it’s launch but I’m exstatic about Metal Gear Solid 2: Digital Graphic Novel since I loved the first one.
Thanks for the great news update.

man, i watched the 15 minute gameplay demonstration on my 40″ 720p Samsung, and this game is *AMAZING.
the attention to detail, and the sound and art design are phenomenal.
i cannot wait for it to hit.
then again, considering all the awesome games hitting the PS3 this fall, i think they’ll make the wait infinitely more bareable.

Sony you should release Final Fantasy 7 on the PSN the day Halo 3 comes out, that would be hilarious. I heard somebody say that Sony said exclusivity didn’t matter! It does Sony! We already are seein consequences as many previouus exclusives go multiplatform! Whatever you do make sure everything is ok with Square Enix because I read an interview with Peter Moore and sombody else from Microsoft a week ago and they said they want Final Fantasy 13 on the Xbox 360! Don’t allow what happend to Grand Theft Auto to happen again! I don’t think Final Fantasy is possible on the 360 thanks to the Cell Processer but I bet Microsoft is going to try to make Final Fantasy 14 go multiplatform! So whatever you do give Sqaure Enix $50 Million or something but don’t let that happen! BTW you should make a deal with Bethsheda Softworks to at least make Fallout 3 a timed exclusive or at least get extra content. Trust me that game is going to be huge and knowing Microsoft I bet they will try to do something like that first. Sorry for the long post but I’m trying to give you good advice Sony, and I heard you Christmas 08 would be critical for you and doing something with Fallout 3 would gaurantee success.
