This is Michael Shorrock. I’m the Director of 3rd Party Relations at SCEA. As you may have seen this morning/last night on GameHead with Geoff Keighley, we are announcing that a new franchise from Rockstar Games will be exclusive to PS3. As part of our long standing relationship with Rockstar, and the incredible success for both companies with the cultural icon that is Grand Theft Auto, we’ve agreed to the PlayStation exclusive rights of the next great franchise from the Rockstar studios.
Everyone knows to have success in this business you need to look ahead, identifying the talent and titles that are going to give consumers new kinds of gaming experiences that help set the bar for the rest of the industry. Rockstar has a heritage for doing just that. We have had incredible success with the GTA franchise and are happy to continue to offer those titles on our platforms, and even more excited about what’s to come from the current and future relationship between our companies. Rockstar really wanted to make a game that you can truly only do on PS3, harnessing the power of CELL and Blu-ray disc and this deal lets them do just that.. This is really a win-win situation for both companies. As Jack mentioned in the interview with Geoff, this franchise is not LA Noire, but something all new. We agreed with Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive Software that we wouldn’t disclose anything more about the deal or title at this time, so stay tuned, we’ll share more info as soon as we can.

I know I don’t see what M$ hopes to get for that. They were going to get hallf of the extra content so why did they pay 50 Million when they were getting half in the first place? Then they lost a billion dollars rushing their crud to the market. But anyway good job Sony, we are finally getting some good 3rd party exclusives. And wow 2008 is going to be absolutely insane for you: Little Big Planet, MGS4, Final Fantasy 13, FF Versus 13, Gran Turismo 5, much more and now this. I think Microsoft is overestimating their perfect storm because most of their perfect storm is available on the PS3.

Rockstar’s never been afraid to push the envelope I’ve always respected them for that. How many rip offs of GTA have we seen so far? lol I can’t wait to see what’s up their sleeve next

GTA is Rockstar’s only successful brand. They are a big name for one game. Even Bully is just “young GTA”.
hope Sony didn’t pay too much, because the smart money is that it’ll be a dog just like the rest of the rockstar “franchises”.

LA Noire is exclusive to the PS3. It says so on Take2’s 2008 release list.

I’m really not excited about a new Rock Star game. Sure GTA is fun but after a while… it gets old.
They should test their creativity with somthing more than a “kill civilans” thing.

Sony just knocked one out of the park. I’m surprised that you guys didn’t announce this at E3, but maybe everything wasn’t finalized by the time E3 came around, so you saved it for later.
Perhaps it would have been best to save it till after E3? I mean seriously, Nintendo and MS got a pretty severe beating at E3, so it seems courteous to wait till after the show to drop another bomb.
I’m glad you guys are beginning to NOT ONLY listen to your fanbase, but also take action based on our needs, and really kicking everything up a notch. You guys just hit 6 million units with PS3 and I am very confident that you’ll make a lot of publishers that broke Sony exclusivity feel a little dumb when they see where the PS3 sits at the end of the fiscal year.
Keep up the great work and don’t stop doing what you’re doing! Just because we are happy now doesn’t mean we’re satisfied. We want to see this kind of action taken for the PS3’s entire lifespan. :)

At last something amazing has sprung out from the depths of the SCEA headquarters, i just about died from amazement when i heard that there was actually good news for once, i mean after that price drop blunder i was wondering whether or not sony would ever redeem itself, oh well at least lair is done and ill be able to pick it up as soon as it comes out.

This is awesome news! People were annoyed when GTAIV was announced going to 360 as well but if we get GTAIV AND Rockstars next franchise exclusive!

Great news …the GTA story has been told after part 4 and its time to move on for Rockstar. We get the same game as the 360.
The story of GTA 4 is told in the game as it will be. Futhermore the 2 extra episodes will be out in 2008 ….months after the game release…The 2 extra episodes for the 360 will be sidequest and will be not important for the GTA 4 story as it will be.
The deal with Sony is great news and Sony diserved this.
The Playstation made Rockstar what it is now and the partnership with Sony is stronger than ever. An exclusieve new franchise is more important than the last part of a serie and some extra content. Rockstar toke the Micro money and is laughing his ass of. Great move by Rockstar…..
The birth of a new great Rockstar franchise is at hand…exclusieve for the PS3, thats what counts…..

@39 as 144 has stated already the DLC for 360 is going be out in 2008. Whowill be still playing GTAIV in 2008? I mean there will be other games coming out afterwards and IMHO a better game comes out in 2008 most likely around the same time, MGS4. ooohhh baby!!!!

Actually I believe that Lair, KIllzone and GTAIV maybe represent the second generation of the PS3. So we might be talking of the 3rd generation of games which is pretty awesome depending on how much time they spend to get the game out.
About the topic, I think this is great great news. I can not wait to see which new things are coming.
The last few weeks have been SO great for the PS3. I can not complain about anything.
Please keep this things coming.

Dark King isn’t the one that secured in-game XMB… You guys are crazy if you think he did… If you’re going to voice your wants, at least put some effort into it… not just ctrl-c, ctrl-v…
