Behind The Curtain: The Warhawk Servers

Warhawk Servers 1

As I mentioned in my last post, I wanted to give you guys a bit of a “peek-behind-the-curtain,” to show you our sweet Warhawk server setup.

Those of you familiar with Warhawk already know that the game features a very unique server method that we call “Integrated Game Server” or IGS for short — the industry needs more acronyms don’t you think :-)

The Warhawk IGS method means that instead of us forcing players to be connected to the SONY “mothership” for any and all games, we instead let players host their own servers on their own PS3s. This is fairly unique and it enables a couple of really nice benefits.

First, since Warhawk is a global online game, our IGS method scatters game servers quite literally into player’s homes all over the planet — the US, China, Europe, Australia, and Japan! No matter where you live, what time you want to play, or what language you speak, you’ll always be able to get your game on.

Secondly, this helps with latency. If you haven’t heard, Warhawk is a fast game, a very fast game, so we wanted to ensure you had the best chance of finding servers with good ping times. We also wanted to make sure people could host *and* play on their own servers. After all, why should you have to connect to a server a gazillion hops away when you know that there are Warhawk servers running in your state or city? Possibly on your same ISP? Maybe even friends in your neighborhood or buddies in your dorm?

Hence our desire to develop an IGS system for Warhawk.

All that said, we still want to make sure that there are always an abundance of wicked-fast Ranked Dedicated servers available for players. The images that accompany this post were taken by our very talented IT team here at SCEA. And yes, what you’re looking at is an enormous server cluster for Warhawk…of rack-mounted PS3s!

During the public beta, many of you wanted *way more* Ranked-Dedicated servers to play on so you could level-up and earn awards, rank upgrades, etc….

Well…ask and ye shall receive!

In addition to players being able to host their own servers, 32-player “dedicated” servers for your clan practices or 24-player “player” servers, SONY has made a great commitment to all of our Warhawk players by staging Warhawk Server clusters similar to this one all over the world.

The system that our IT team engineered for Warhawk is truly killer and we couldn’t be happier with the setup — and hopefully players will be stoked too once the game launches. Just for the record…I am fairly confident that our IT team is not comprised of Autobots.

For those of you who participated in the beta, you may remember toward the end that some players started to “spoof” the official SONY server names — shame on you. I will find you all online and shank you repeatedly or snipe you in the crotch!

So…in the beta forums you all asked for a way to identify official SONY servers from player servers…Again, your wish is granted.

When Warhawk launches, all official servers are displayed with an eye-pleasing blue color in the server list. This gives players a really quick way of picking which server they want to connect to.

Alright, this post is getting pretty damn long so I gotta wrap it up.

The last thing I want to mention, and those of you who participated in the beta already know this, is that we don’t force game match-making on to our players with Warhawk. When you log-in to Warhawk, you get a server list…a *global* server list (with customizable filters of course), just like many of us have come to love from years of PC gaming. *You*, the player, get to choose the server you want to play on. If you don’t see a server out there that has exactly what you want…then launch your own.

And yes, you can play on your own server too…even in 4-way split screen.

Well…hope this gives you a bit more info on Warhawk’s server system and setup. If you have any questions please post them in the comments and I’ll try to answer as many as I can.

Rock on!

  • That’s a lot of power in that room.

  • I can’t imagine your electricity bill.

    (Sorry for double post)

  • @AGQ0105

They announced that the instability was called by the firmware update that came when the beta was released.

They said the servers performed great until the firmware update. Im sure they have fixed it by now.

  • Incredible…can’t wait till this game comes out!

  • wow can’t wait for this game its going to be third game for ps3 but I know its hot in there psn id is bs6268d

  • If i import Warhawk will it work on my PAL PS3?

  • [DELETED] you Dylan!

As soon as I read your post and saw all that sexy hardware, I sprung bronze and haven’t been able to leave my desk for hours.

  • That sirs is indeed very impressive! This should made a big deal of because we all know that you couldn’t stick a bunch of Xbox 360s in a room to get them to act as servers, well unless you wanted to melt all of them down due to the RROD.

  • That is awsome. All them PS3’s. Paul of loadingreadyrun won’t like this. You will have to watch – http://www.loadingreadyrun.com/videos/view/182/Three+PS3s to understand.

  • Wow Sony and Incognito have done a great job. This is going to be great.

  • Thank you guys for making these servers. This will make the game infinitley better. I will be playing this game pretty much every night when it comes out. Thanks for listening to us.

  • Does this game support Home, that way when Home is released, it can easily be started up through Home? If it doesn’t now, will some type of update come out in the near future to support Home?

  • I just wanna go into that room and grab a PS3. Awesome blog!

  • holy s*** thats alot of PS3’s!

  • ::::Off Topic::::

By the way, nice to see the Blu-Ray version of 300 outsold the HD-DVD format by a 2:1 ration. 65% people choosing Blu-Ray, while 35% chose the HD-DVD version. Big win for Blu-Ray here!

  • IGS… wow… what a concept…

So ground breaking and original that QuakeII did it in 1997 and nearly every PC developer of FPSs or strategy games has done it since.

But hey, YOU invented a new ACRONYM!!!

You also contradict yourslef, claiming that runnign serves on users machiens will ensure great internet play, and then telling us that Sony will be running machine rooms to give us high quality play.

So which is it? Is Sony’s neato-cool rack unnecessary or does being hosted by random machines of unknown connectivity suck?

  • @RicanPlaya88

You know I got my copy bro.:)

  • Haha awesome, just like the Terrasoft clusters. Amazing…i want to know how fast all of those combined equal to. I wished i got into the beta but im excited for the game and can’t wait!

  • =o They don’t overheat all clumped together like that?

  • @40cal

Me too man. I didn’t get to watch it at the movie theatres. So you best bet I enjoyed watching it on blu-ray. Awesome movie.

  • Please use the excess processing power to FOLD@SONY so we can cure cancer quicker!

The gap between the coolness of the Warhawk dev team & the competition has widened to a gulf.

It would be cool if you had enemy pilots yell “first mover advantage” when they get shot down…
If you know what I mean…

  • Letting us choose whatever server we care to play on rather than some ridiculous matchmaking scheme is pure bliss. This should be the de facto standard across PS3 games. Not being able to choose your server/who you play with is lame. I will be getting this game for certain.

  • thats realy nice cant wait . going to download it from the US -store and play it here in Sweden :D. realy nice stuff. ( and of topic um make the blog more ps3 frendly , cos i had to “logout” from the ps3 game os and boot linux inorder to regiseter my ps3 did freas each time i did trye to register , however from linux ther was no problem),

  • @ SCEA:

So if i want to host and play a game on my own ps3 i can have 24 players max (including 4 max in split-screen), while if i choose to just host a game without playing i can have 32 players max, right?

  • I really think the PS3 is the console to own this generation. From its features to its lineup of upcoming games. Its been off to a slow start, but I believe in the gaming philosopy of Sony. However, I am concerned that no one will know it. When I tell friends, most of whom own 360s, about PS3 ‘current’ features, their wow’d. Most of them simply don’t know what its capable of or is doing right now. Sure the game selection is slim, but they don’t even know what’s coming. While even that would be ok, cause that’s the purpose of advertising…I’m kinda concerned about that. I’m not convinced the marketing team is going to effectively let folks know. A lot of people don’t know what Blu-ray is. Or that they can put an OS on the system. Or that updates have set up a environment where it is constantly evolving. I hope Warhawk is advertised well, showing the features of the game in their commercials and ads. I hope Home (though its free) is advertised on TV…and often…with ‘FREE’ flashing on the screen. Even the shared 3rd party games need to show the PS3 emblem at the end. There’s a difference between the PS3 and 360, but people need to see it and be shown it. Folks are getting 360s cause they’re friends have it, and because its being associated with even the games PS3 shares. Outside of hardcore gamers, will these ads be created in such a way that common folks understand the value of the system.

  • @ HeFromADistance:

That’s the thing I don’t like about the way Microsoft advertises their 360 commercials. They take these multiplatform games and slap their name on the end of the commercial misleading people into thinking it’s exclusive. Take their ‘Blockbuster’ commercial for instance where they say something along the lines of “Only on 360” when 2 of the 3 titles are on many other platforms also.

  • Nice server setup! You have no idea how excited I am for Warhawks release.

These are the kind of posts I like to see!

  • Well, everything is sounding good about this game, i now just hope Warhawk doesnt get delayed like LAIR.

  • oh wow I’m really excited about warhawk,
my only prob is monies or my lack therof.
so……… hey wanna send me a copy por gratis?

  • Release Warhawk wallpaper of a Warhawk spiraling downward releasing his payload on an infantry unit. =)

  • I can’t wait to play :) Great Work guy !

  • This game is no longer “WarHawk” from this day forward(being in the beta) it will be called “WOWHAWK” it is written.

  • Wow, that’s really impressive. That server must really cost a fortune, with all those PS3 consoles. To an extent, I’m a little surprised the server doesn’t just contains a few PS3 components (instead of the whole console itself).

Anyway, I’m really excited about the news and makes me want Warhawk even more.

@ HeFromADistance (sorry to get a tad off-topic)

I know what you mean, because many people I know buy whatever console their friend has. If their friend doesn’t have it, they assume it’s not the best.

  • Looks great!

Because Europe didnt get any Beta testing a little demo would be great.

Some amazing games are coming out soon like Lair, Heavenly sword and Warhawk, I need a demo to make my choice.

  • man i can not wait to get this game! will the game have in game friends list? and will you be able toinvite friends to your game or send them in game text?

    thank you

  • A whole rack-full of cool

  • I don’t get post like 188…..

I see them all the time, I don’t know what it means. Someone please explain to me…

  • For $500 bucks a server, that is cheap.

A server for a PC game with 32 players is over $1000.

  • quit making the wait for the game worse! still haven’t withdrawls from playing in Beta. Not to anyone that did not play beta. Play in a all warhawk match to learn how to fly otherwise you’ll get owned worse in ground/air fights

  • Awesome!! All those PS3’s in one room! Sweeeeeeeet!

  • You guys should do what Resistance has and thats dedicated servers

  • Those are awesome pics. How cool is that server room full of PS3’s. I love it. Thanks for the info, too. You guys are awesome.

  • Thank god for the Dedicated servers. I can’t stand peer2peer Thanks Sony! :)

  • great GREAT post.

It is always nice to know all this kind of stuff (I am a bit of a tech geek) and to know that Sony supports and plans to support Warhawk for many years as is seen on this clusters.

I am really looking forward this FAQ you are putting in together. I don’t want to repeat myself because I already put my questions in your previous post.

I am definitely buying this game. Not only for the game itself.

You are putting and showing a lot of commitment to this and it is something priceless for me.

The post don’t seem like you guys have been forced to do so, really natural.

I have one little question, do you have an estimate of which bandwidth do you need to host a 8-16-24 players game? I mean, I currently have a nice connection but I just wanted to make sure.

Thanks and keep this things coming please.

    Regards from Argentina

  • Do whatever xbox live does, they do a great online service. I wouldn’t mind paying $50/yr. on the sony network for a comparable service.

  • Great news. That pic with all those PS3s . . . awesome.

  • sony? could we normal users also get a dedicated warhawk server?

does it run under Linux or is it really just running on the micro-kernel?
