Behind The Curtain: The Warhawk Servers

+ Posted by Dylan Jobe // Game Director, Warhawk

Warhawk Servers 1

As I mentioned in my last post, I wanted to give you guys a bit of a “peek-behind-the-curtain,” to show you our sweet Warhawk server setup.

Those of you familiar with Warhawk already know that the game features a very unique server method that we call “Integrated Game Server” or IGS for short — the industry needs more acronyms don’t you think :-)

The Warhawk IGS method means that instead of us forcing players to be connected to the SONY “mothership” for any and all games, we instead let players host their own servers on their own PS3s. This is fairly unique and it enables a couple of really nice benefits.

First, since Warhawk is a global online game, our IGS method scatters game servers quite literally into player’s homes all over the planet — the US, China, Europe, Australia, and Japan! No matter where you live, what time you want to play, or what language you speak, you’ll always be able to get your game on.

Secondly, this helps with latency. If you haven’t heard, Warhawk is a fast game, a very fast game, so we wanted to ensure you had the best chance of finding servers with good ping times. We also wanted to make sure people could host *and* play on their own servers. After all, why should you have to connect to a server a gazillion hops away when you know that there are Warhawk servers running in your state or city? Possibly on your same ISP? Maybe even friends in your neighborhood or buddies in your dorm?

Hence our desire to develop an IGS system for Warhawk.

All that said, we still want to make sure that there are always an abundance of wicked-fast Ranked Dedicated servers available for players. The images that accompany this post were taken by our very talented IT team here at SCEA. And yes, what you’re looking at is an enormous server cluster for Warhawk…of rack-mounted PS3s!

During the public beta, many of you wanted *way more* Ranked-Dedicated servers to play on so you could level-up and earn awards, rank upgrades, etc….

Well…ask and ye shall receive!

In addition to players being able to host their own servers, 32-player “dedicated” servers for your clan practices or 24-player “player” servers, SONY has made a great commitment to all of our Warhawk players by staging Warhawk Server clusters similar to this one all over the world.

The system that our IT team engineered for Warhawk is truly killer and we couldn’t be happier with the setup — and hopefully players will be stoked too once the game launches. Just for the record…I am fairly confident that our IT team is not comprised of Autobots.

For those of you who participated in the beta, you may remember toward the end that some players started to “spoof” the official SONY server names — shame on you. I will find you all online and shank you repeatedly or snipe you in the crotch!

So…in the beta forums you all asked for a way to identify official SONY servers from player servers…Again, your wish is granted.

When Warhawk launches, all official servers are displayed with an eye-pleasing blue color in the server list. This gives players a really quick way of picking which server they want to connect to.

Alright, this post is getting pretty damn long so I gotta wrap it up.

The last thing I want to mention, and those of you who participated in the beta already know this, is that we don’t force game match-making on to our players with Warhawk. When you log-in to Warhawk, you get a server list…a *global* server list (with customizable filters of course), just like many of us have come to love from years of PC gaming. *You*, the player, get to choose the server you want to play on. If you don’t see a server out there that has exactly what you want…then launch your own.

And yes, you can play on your own server too…even in 4-way split screen.

Well…hope this gives you a bit more info on Warhawk’s server system and setup. If you have any questions please post them in the comments and I’ll try to answer as many as I can.

Rock on!

Congrats!

That’s the way to go, ever since I heard that PSN would not need any monthly fee to allow online gaming I knew Sony had real chances to beat XboxLive.

I have a 360 but I haven’t a gold membership. So every online game I’m interested in I’ll buy for PS3. I’m certainly not going to shell out $ for playing online when I can do so for free!

Community and clan servers are such a delight for PC Games like Battlefield 2. There’s always a fast server with lots of gamers online. And online gaming will not halt if EA decides it to, like it’s happening on the 360 right now!!

Just imagine the possibilities for UT3 and BF3 on PS3! Multiple communities builiding free mods, maps and whatnot which can be played on dedicated servers, I really hope it will be possible to make and use mods on PS3. This is crucial to beat the hell out of XboxLive.

I have a question. Will the Warhawk Servers be worldwide, like the public beta??

So can Europeans play against US guys? :)

Usually latency and lags kills the experience of good net multiplayer games, i hope that IGS method delivers its promises of low latency and lag.
Thx for the info and the photos, very impressive. Were all looking for to Warhawk =)

Will we have the option to make the radar transparent in any way because that was a problem I had with the Beta and I never had a reply about it from you.

The Bad thing about the Radar was when you played splitscreen with more then 2 players it takes up to much of the screen.

Also what about custom soundtracks? We asked about this all the time but again never got a reply.

Since Sony said the tech is there and just needs the devs to add it to the games why wasn’t this done to make gameplay even better?

I’m definitly gonna get Warhawk assuming its not delayed. I was in the Beta and was quite happy with the overall gameplay.

Speaking of delays…why sooo many delays now? Lair, Heavenly Sword, Stranglehold…your biggest games seem to be getting the shaft right now…not making the games seem so big when they keep getting pushed back. Can we get some reasoning behind the delays atleast?

@deadxbabiesxinc

DELAYSTATION 3….need i say more??

Sony doesnt give a rats ass how long a game gets delayed for…they dont care that they have demos of all the HYPED games like Ratchet&Clank and Lair i would include Heavenly Sword but at least they gave us that…and yet we wont see them on the PSN

Oh we get the response like “consider the demo box checked”…oh really???…then where the hell are they????

Sony wants to passify us with gay trailers like they’ve been doing since day one…we all bought a $600 trailer player!!!!

and im not asking for anything that Sony doesnt already have…by SONY’s own admission people have been playing these demos from E3 to X Games…

SONY keeps looking to the future but in the process they’ve forgotten the once that already have the system in the here and now!!!!

IT SO SAD :(

does this mean we wil be getting charged in the soon near future because i cant see them lasting so long for free.

but on an other not that would be another great reason to pay if you put the time and effort into other dedicated servers for others games COD4 hint hint.

If PS3 users were going to be neglected this bad…like i said in previous posts…then the PS3 should never have been released when it was…

yes we would have been waiting for the system…but at the very least when it finally got released it would have had the best firmware with EVERYTHING Sony says it was supposed to do that it doesnt do now

It would have had a hell of alot more games to launch with…IT COULD HAVE BEEN LAUNCHED WITH HEAVENLY SWORD…OR EVEN LAIR

And 99% of loyal sony users would have been happy with everything the ps3 can do…but instead its nothing but half assed firmware updates, delayed games, gay trailers and no demos

THANK YOU SONY for making me soooo F’en happy

sectionz  |  August 9th, 2007 at 9:36 am

you know to the laymen that looks expensive but as an IT professional, I can see why the PSN is free vs. XBox live … now keep in mind that I am speculating .. but since the ps3 is basically a server class machine (built to last), the cost of 60 PS3s is just a fraction of what it would cost to put in 60 regular servers with the equivalent power of a ps3. Not to mention that they are either running linux (free) or some custom game server (technically free) vs windows server (u KNOW they HAVE to use windows) .. also the cost of maintenance has to be much lower as well + the PS3 will consume less power than a standard rack mount server (and quieter).

But best of all .. if you love the ps3 the way i do .. just imagine that room filled with xbox 360s … oh wait .. you cant do that .. and would you want to? it would be a MASSIVE meltdown in a matter of hours that no IT guy could go in to fix because the noise would render him immobile.

deadxbabiesxinc  |  August 9th, 2007 at 10:00 am

@ Loucifer

you know what your right, I was all happy I got the PS3 on launch day the only good thing that came from that decision so far is that I get to have a PS3 with that emotion chip thingy…I guess if you can call that a special thing…otherwise bupkiss!

I’m still happy I got a PS3 and I support it,excited with the new games and all. But wow…if we get the same stuff that the Europeans got in their PSN store…I’m gonna be back to being disappointed.

Atleast GRAW and Warhawk are coming out this month…RIGHT? Well I guess with sony…i’ll wait a month after the supposed release dates so I don’t have to get excited for no reason.

286

Gravatar

joel  |  August 9th, 2007 at 10:10 am

Come on, the emotion engine doesnt matter so much, firmware already uses 85% of the games the emotion engine uses.

I need a confirmation from sony, are you guys making rockstar a secound party company or not?

I’m gonna pray GRAW and Warhawk come out like scheduled…otherwise i’m just gonna go see all the new movies that are/have come out…atleast when they say the date they’ll be “released”, they ARE released.

Btw…how much are 360’s again? I might have to jump boat for awhile so I can atleast play something, they dropped in price a bit recently too right?

they look sweet, i had Warhawk back in the day on the PS1, nice to see we will be able to host our own games. and not get forced into a game like in Blazing Angles, i mean c’mon guys, BA is a good game, why ain’t more of you playing that online? i swear there’s only ever the same six people playing it. which is a shame, truely.

glad that Warhawk comes out after the wages enter the bank. phew. see you all in the battle zone.

Loucifer…buddy

we all know where you are coming from, but saying it in that manner will get you no where. your message will be deleted, or even worse you could be banned.

Be a little more creative with your posts, say something rational and relevant like: “wow those servers are crazy, I can’t wait for Warhawk,” and then sneak in a complaint like “by the way where are my demos, did you loose the list with the check box already?”

you know it throws them of, you get to say what you wanted, and everyone is happy. ;-)

@Kratos_ate_Snake

How’s this: wow warhawk looks awesome but i want more demos but i can’t wait for warhawk it looks sweet, sweet like if we had some news on Home, or the new SingStar mics, which reminders me of that time i was beta-testing warhawk and their was a player named “mic” which i thought was funny, but not funny ha-ha, funny kinda sad, like how we don’t have enough demos and 360 gets all the cool ones, but at least we’re getting warhawk.

Kratos_ate_Snake  |  August 9th, 2007 at 11:26 am

lol holy crap bro… best comment I have seen so far… awesome. :-) hahaha

Speaking of warhawk, what’s up with stranglehold being indefinitely delayed, not like the awesome Lair which was only delayed a little bit but I want to play it so bad cause it looks amazing, unlike today’s store update that had no demos. OH my god check out how many PS3s are in those Pics, I can’t wait for Warhawk and more demos and Warhawk and Heavenly sword ep.2 and Warhawk is cool.
