Industry Sales Climb, PS3 Sales Climb Too

205 0

Hey everyone, I’m Mariam Sughayer, analyst relations manager here at SCEA. I’m the gal who works with those guys you see quoted in newspapers and news sites all the time talking about the industry; folks like Michael Pachter and Billy Pidgeon.

Today, the much anticipated NPD numbers were released and we’re very excited about how great July was for video games. If you didn’t know, NPD is the organization that tracks sales of videogames in the U.S. According to NPD, the industry continues to boom with sales of $925.52 million dollars for the month of July – that’s a 37% increase for the industry since this time last year.

From a PlayStation perspective, coming out of E3 we were really anticipating a good reaction to our new hardware pricing announced on July 9th, and we were obviously very pleased to see that PS3 sales increased with 159K units sold at retail for the month of July, which puts us up 61% over June numbers.

While I think a lot of that had to do with the new price, I also think there is a great deal of anticipation for the line up of games just around the corner, including Warhawk (Aug. 28), Lair (Sept. 4) and Heavenly Sword (Sept. 12). In fact, September should definitely be a big month for us when you add in the launch of the new slimmer, lighter PSP which will hit store shelves next month.

I’m going to start posting these sales numbers on a regular basis to keep you guys up to date on the business side of things. Thanks to all of you who made July such a great month for PlayStation. I’ll try to post again here in a few weeks.

  • I think some people don’t get it. Great exclusive games means more console sales, more console sales means more games in general. Why care about PS3 sales? because unlike the wii, it really is trying to push videogames to the next level and Blu-ray discs has that extra storage space developers wanted to create bigger and more complex games.

By “war”, I don’t mean some fanboy console war. I mean marketing “war” (competion). Sony is the target, because they were the ones on top for a long time. I hope you get it.

  • @Loucifer

    Haha, now THAT is rich.

Upscaling PS3 games? For what? For the extra pixels? The problem that an idea like that faces, is that with the limited memory footprints of the PS3 in it’s current SDK state, upscaling games like that would be a horrendous mistake, causing nothing but horrible framerate jags and what we who understand the idea call “tearing”, which is where you see the picture “tear” up, making a line jerk across the screen. That is only gonna make the games look worse actually. Oh, and the second problem, 1080p HDTV’s have absolutely no market penetration at the moment. And if you’re complaining about upscaling to 1080i, well, hate to hand you the facts, but 720p is a much cleaner HD resolution. Mainly due to the fact that its PROGRESSIVE, not INTERLACED. See your SDTV’s and whatnot, they use an INTERLACED signal, where it only reads the pixels in a left to right fashion, whereas PROGRESSIVE is a much stronger pixel read speed. It crosses the screen up AND down, several times more per millisecond, creating a much more complete picture. See the difference? Oh, obviously not, because you’re complaining about it. Any tech nerd knows that for now, 720p is damn fine for an HD resolution. Get used to it. Now, I gotta get real with you for a second.

    Kill the PS2?

What in the [DELETED] makes you think that a move like that will help them at all? “Yeah, let’s cut off our best liferaft and just run with the new stuff, cause of course, it’s new.” Yeah, that’s smart business. When the PS2 launched, they didn’t kill the PS1, and did that hurt them? Hell no. Why would it? It’s just another (still) lucrative center of business. There will still be a market for the last gen even in a new gen state. The Blu-Ray move also wasn’t just for 1080p games, but BIGGER GAMES overall, like how the levels can be much bigger and the stories much longer, regardless of native resolution. Oh, and we all care so much how much of a whiny little girl you are about framerates. How about you shut your trap for about 10 seconds and play some of these games you’re bashing. Why own a PS3 if you’re gonna hate on all the games? Seriously, I don’t listen to reviews all the time, and I end up being a lot more satisfied because of it. I use them as general guidelines for what a game is, but I never listen to others opinions as fact, when self learned experience is so much more valuable. Don’t wanna spend $60 on it? Go to the damn video store, and spend $6! You get a few days to try it out, and if YOU deem it worth $60 at the end of the day, buy it, if not, go bash the PS3 on some Xbot site, and leave us alone. We are enjoying these games that we have been salivating for, and will be, regardless of if they are the top of the line at the moment. Oh, yeah, not to mention that I’d absolutely LOVE to see you try to develop a PS3 game. Then come complain about how games aren’t all in 1080p yet. How about you step back, stop hating, and just think for a moment about why you’re so enraged in the first place. Is it because Sony hasn’t delivered their next gen console, or because you didn’t know enough about the bleeding edge tech that went into this to deem yourself naive enough to sit here and complain about the current state of it.

    Tough huh?

  • @Savage

    VGChartz:

    360 – 36,901 34,396 32,538 34,174 = 138,009
    PS3 – 22,102 51,763 45,101 43,498 = 162,464

    NPD:

    360 – 170,000
    PS3 – 159,000

As you can see, although the PS3 numbers are pretty close, the VGChartz 360 numbers are way off.

    Nice try though ;-)

  • @Scorpio

MS had no choice but to stop production of the original XBox since they didn’t have the intellectual rights to the graphic and chipset chips so when nVidia stopped production of those chips in August 2005, they were left high and dry (and was one of the reason why MS had to rush the console out in Fall 2005). They have admitted that not having those rights on the original XBox chips was a mistake on their part and they learned from it. They have full ownership of the 360 CPU/GPU/Chipset chips this time.

  • @SlyTheBoss |

Both the NPD and VGchartz numbers are right. They both use estimates and they both track months using different dates. I believe the VGchartz numbers for the month started a week sooner than NPD and ended a week sooner.

Oh, why do you post here again? Just incase you missed the title bar it says “A blog by SCEA for Playstation fans”

Also the other reason that the Xbox stoped production is because you could by them loaded with like 50 games. Damn mod chips.

  • Oh God, the spin here is unbelieveable. Even with the price cut, the Xbox 360 STILL outsold the PS3, and the August numbers won’t be any better if Bioshock is any indication.

(And before someone accuses me of being a fanboy, I have a PSP, and am interested in upgrading to the slim model, but I prefer the X360 over the PS3. It just comes down to the games, honestly…)

  • ferrarimanf355 | August 28th, 2007 at 6:50 am

Oh God, the spin here is unbelieveable. Even with the price cut, the Xbox 360 STILL outsold the PS3,

In the U.S. only. The PS3 has outsold the 360 Worldwide for the past six weeks.

  • @CitizenInsane27

Im not going to get into a debate…i said what i wanted to say and thats that…

I also have a TV that handles 1080p if the rest of the market is too poor to get one thats their problem…secondly if the 360 has tons of 1080p games that look a hell of alot better then PS3’s 720…

Ive had a boxed 360 since christmas unopened that i got as a gift and thought about selling being the Sony fan i am…but i bought into Sony’s hype…the PS3 is nothing right now…maybe in a good 2-3 yrs it will be something….

oh i opened that 360!!!!!!…and i bought my first game Bioshock which is totally sick!!!!!…and in 1080p…AND got my Dirt which isnt even released yet on PS3 AND if the PS3 demo is any clue as to what the game will be…the graphics are no where near as bright and vivid as 360…and sadly enough the PS3 doesnt even rumble…such a small feature and Sony went with a six-axis…LOL

why have a “next gen” system that doesnt do FULL HD!!!!…no rumble!!!!…uses an OS from a handheld device…i expected the PS3 to have a new innovative OS…not one from a PSP…whats so next gen about that??…Sony the future of HD???…yea right…my ass it is!!!

oh and i played the Heavenly Sword demo…dont like it!!! not my style…Warhawk…played the Beta…i liked it dont get me wrong…but didnt hold my attention for long…Lair??…LOL…yea ok im not wasting my money on that…what else is there “Mr. I Love Sony”??? Resistance that i’ve been playing for a year??

And for the record…oh im not [DELETED]…i’m telling you like it is…like we see it in the REAL WORLD…you think i give a [DELTED] about bells and whistles???…hell no…all i want is games in 1080p to enjoy my 52″ HDTV…screw ports that look like [DELETED] on the PS3 cuz i can play the real deal on the 360….why wait MONTHS for games to come out…by the time most of the multiplatform games come to PS3 i’ll have already beaten it on 360…LOL…

Oh i used to be a Sony faithful and no i wont be selling my PS3…but if you fanboys bought a 360 or ask mommy to buy you one either way…and see for yourselves…you’d see just how hard Sony bent everyone over…

I’ll wait the 2-3 yrs when and if Sony takes top honors again…cuz in order to beat the 360 you have to compete…and games in 720p getting ratings of 7.0(some rating lower) and games in 1080p rated 9.7(yup Bioshock) cant compete

you cant beat someone until you catch up first as well…and Sony has some serious [DELETED] ground to make up…so i said this before and i’ll say it again…i dont give a [DELETED] what anyone says…I’m not spending my money on another Sony product until Sony makes me believe they are the “Future of HD & Gaming”

    end of discussion!

  • Never got to that chart on VGchartz.com but it’s very interesting. 360/PS3 even worldwide. And that’s with a big price difference. I’m really interested in what sales will be like after the holidays. I predict PS3 will make its biggest jump and get much closer to the 360.

  • @CitizenInsane27

Im not going to get into a debate with you im just going to say this!

I’ve been a Sony faithful since the PS launch…I’ve had a sealed 360 in my closet since christmas that i got as a gift and never opened cuz of my Sony loyalty

It wasnt until i opened that box, bought my first 360 game (Bioshock) and REALLY checked out EVERYTHING Microsoft offers…that i realized how badly us PS3 owners are being bent over…so if you like takin it like that, then thats cool….i live in the real world…and the real world says 720p rated T games with reviews of 7.0 (Warhawk/Heavenly Sword) sumtimes less VS. 1080p rated M with reviews of 9.7 (yup Bioshock) are just NOT going to cut it!!!

say what you want to say…I can afford a 1080p TV and i want 1080p games to go with my 52″ HDTV…if you cant afford a 1080p tv or have one that only supports 720p and 1080i then thats your problem…upgrade your tv then

for now 360 has top honors…Sont cant win until they catch up first…and they have ALOT of ground to cover…heres a little taste of the Sony flavor…in an article posted today on IGN

“With Sony rolling out the 0.1 version of the Home SDK to third-party developers only a month or two ago, we’ve heard getting Home integration up is kind of a problem right now. Initially when Home was announced you had a lot of companies saying ‘Sure we’ll support that this holiday!’ but the holiday season is getting closer and they don’t have the tools to do anything more than bare bones Home integration. And then we heard that Sony probably won’t get the Trophy tools out to third-party developers for another couple months which makes holiday season Trophies sound tricky. Being a first-party company, are you more in touch with Sony’s plans for Home?”

LOL…home wont even be complete till AFTER the holidays!!!…LOL…so we’ll get the “WATERED DOWN” version in Oct and told “Be Patient for Future Updates”

I said enough…if you cant see the problems Sony has then thats your issue…while you sit here and defend Sony to no end i’ll be playing next gen games in FULL HD and YOU can be the sucker!!!!!!!!

  • For the PS3 hopefuls heres a little more news for you

“Then there is the lingering question of the rumored PS3 version of BioShock found in the PC code. Levine responds quite clearly, “I promise you, there is no secret plan about the PS3 that we’re keeping from people. There’s no PS3 development going on that we’re hiding. There’s lots of stuff that gets into game code, plans change over time and we got an exclusive deal with Microsoft … that’s not a Rosetta Stone discovery.”

  • Bioshock is a great game, sure. But the 360 can’t even run it at full quality at full frame rates. Thats why there is an option to lower the graphic quality for a more consistent frame rate. How can you brag about it being “Full HD” if it can’t even do it at full speed? :P

Not only that but there is a huge amount of quality loss from having to use an RGB or Component connection instead of DVI or HDMI.

And besides, it looks better on the PC, so why get the 360 version?

Oh, and why is everything in the game so damn shiny? It’s kind of annoying :).

  • Hey, Nice how Warhawk is advertised for Tue Aug 28th but I cant get it anywhere but the PSN. It wont be in any stores till tomorrow. Thanks for dropping the ball.

  • Releases always happen this way (next day availabilty). Also this is way off topic for this blog.

Worldwide PS3/360 sales are even for now….

  • @Demon

So the next level is just prettier graphics and more realistic? I’m sorry, but if I want to play something close to real life… I’ll turn my system off and play real life.

    General Comments:

The Wii is not innovative, but repackages some innovative attempts from the 80s. The Power Glove did movement recognition with a sensor bar. Wii Fit… we did have the Power Pad after all.

Sony’s biggest problem is a catch 22. Game companies won’t develop games for it (because it’s expensive). Gamers won’t buy it because the games aren’t coming. They can’t get buyers without games. They can’t get games without buyers. They’re now stuck relying on 1st party exclusives, and Sony’s first party exclusives have never been a reason for me to purchase a system. Heavenly Sword looks nice, but without a jump button and having played the demo (on my PS3, yes I own one), it’s not worth $60. And if someone were buying the system for the game, it sure as heck isn’t worth $560.

The other problem is console exclusivity. With the high cost of console games in HD and tons of high quality FMV in HD, the cost to develop goes up. With the higher cost, companies want to recoup money anyway they can. They do this by going platform agnostic.

This is where the Wii has the advantage. If there is a run away hit on the Wii… the controller experience can’t be replicated (despite the sixaxis having motion sense capabilities, it’s not the focus for control) on any other system. They become console exclusive by default (this being games that aren’t FPS and so on). Tennis becomes more fun when you REALLY interact with the game.

  • Haha, wow. Defensive. Almost like a fanboi…

Moving on to what I was gonna say. The only reason I defend Sony, is that as a 360 OWNER and a PS3 OWNER, the PS3 does the job. I’m sorry you are gullible (or maybe gulli-calf?) and you bought into the Sony “hype”, when any smart consumer, and tech enthusiast would have known what was up day one. See, I went into my PS3 purchase full well knowing that everything they promised wasn’t gonna be delivered day one, cause the same thing happened on PS2. They had benchmarks they said the PS2 could accomplish, and most of those benchmarks weren’t matched until towards the later half of it’s life. Seriously, how naive (and I really cannot stress how naive you are) can you be to sit and assume things like that? Oh, and the Home SDK? Yeah, duh, Phil Harrison said in a couple of interviews months ago that not all the features that they listed were gonna be there day one, because they need proper tweaking. Why don’t you go learn yourself and read into things that you get so over-excited about? It seems like you are purposely building yourself up for nothing. And then when the fall comes, you sit there and put the blame on everyone else. Never yourself. Good for you on owning a 1080p TV, that’s fantastic. Now, for the rest of us, who are scraping for cash to buy games this generation, as that we work 8-10 hour days to pay rent, and whatnot, we salute you, for having too much money and time on your hands. My 46″ Sony Grand Wega is quite enough for me, and it took me 3 paychecks to get it, and that was dedicated payments, where I sacrificed all my other needs for the time being to be able to afford it. Oh, and it’s only 720p. Doesn’t seem to bother me. I also won’t neglect to mention that your precious 360 games that run in 1080p all came AFTER the PS3 came out. Because Microsoft was the dumb company who said that your beloved full HD wasn’t needed this generation.

My point is that I’m not a sucker, you are, because you’re the one complaining. And once more dude, just GO AWAY. I could sit here and debate this kind of crap with you all day, to no end, but the point is, you’ve gone from constructive criticism on this blog, to downright ranting against the system, and the company. Unfortunately for you, you are a minority at this moment, and it does cost developers more to develop games in a higher resolution, which right now, its just not worth it.

So for now, just go here http://www.majornelson.com/

And leave us alone. Thank you.

  • @CitizenInsane27

“So for now, just go here http://www.majornelson.com/

LOL…dude i have that address bookmarked but thanx anyway…

“My 46″ Sony Grand Wega is quite enough for me, and it took me 3 paychecks to get it…..and it’s only 720p”

LOL…when you get a 1080p TV then come talk to me about what resolution you’d rather have”

“your precious 360 games that run in 1080p all came AFTER the PS3 came out”

SO! the point is the games are 1080p and games like Prey that has a max 1080i gets upscaled to 1080p

“Unfortunately for you, you are a minority at this moment”

LOLOL…yea ok…apparently you dont read most of these posts cuz half say exactly what i say just phrased differently

“and it does cost developers more to develop games in a higher resolution, which right now, its just not worth it.”

What are you kidding me????…its not worth developing in 1080??…your a loser

    “And leave us alone”

LOL…no chance in hell so get used to me :)

  • i think there’s a lot of misunderstanding going on here! no one said they were marketing wise guys…..but between the times of 0700 and 0745, i saw 5 Wii ads on just as many stations! War Hawk launched last night and not one ad! Heck….i might have just seen one ad for the game all day!!

on a sadder note, i’ve seen (3) bioshock ads and (4) Madden 360 ads today.

  • @ loucifer

Chill out man, take a deep breath.

I really hope you come to realize that there should not be ‘sides’ or ‘camps’ when it comes to entertainment devices. Each console has its high points. For example, the 360 does in fact have alot of really great games; that is why I have one.

But the PS3 has some good ones too, as well as PSP connectivity, high backwards compatibility, free online service, !!Rechargeable controllers!!, and an integrated HD format ( which is doing great at the moment ).

Just learn to love every console for what it has. I love Zelda, Jak & Daxter, and Halo… That is sort of unheard of these days; I invite you to try it, and if you are in Missouri some day, Hell, I’ll invite you over for some awesome PC, 360, PS3, Wii, PS2, XBox, GC, N64, PS1, Saturn, DC, Gensis, SNES, Nes, and Atari gaming.

    ~cheers~

  • @severeon

    LOL…oh im calm :)

and i have plenty of games to play thanx for the offer though..but my brother did basic in Misery…i mean Missouri and str8 from his mouth the “the Show me state didnt show me [DELETED]”…i love that phrase…LOL

  • @severeon

    LOL…oh im calm :)

  • @40cal I think it’s been established that SlytheBoss is in fact the notorious SlytheTroll. Now, we just have to gather our forces and… ask that he be booted.

As for you CitizenInsane- that was one huge paragraph but I read it, so I have just this to say: Word! The Devil’s greatest trick was convincing the world he didn’t exist, but we’ve seen through the thinly veiled facade (extremely thin) to see that the Devil has taken up camp as a threegeekstee! :P

  • @slerch666

Developers can now do more thanks to the PS3, not just graphically. The Wii just doesn’t have the power the developers need to create more complex games, not just prettier graphics and more realistic games, which the PS3 can do.

  • @Loucifer
A buddy of mine who has been enjoying his 360 and looking forward to Blue Dragon had it die on him yesterday. Working flawlessly and then suddenly crashed with no warning. Upon restarting it, it crashed at the logo and then the red rings popped up. I don’t know if Canadians got stuck with bad stock but i’m hearing over and over again about returns. I’ve talked to about a dozen 360 owners and about only 1/3 say they’ve had no issues at all.

I definitely want to play Bioshock but how pissed would you be if your system died out of the blue? Mine is already acting up but hasn’t quite died yet. If i get Bioshock for 60+ and my system finally decides it’s had enough I going to feel robbed. You’re talking roughly a month to get it back and start playing again. You rail against Sony for ignoring the customers but what has Microsoft done? The systems they’re fixing AREN’T GETTING FIXED. Did i mention that when he called for service he couldn’t get through because “all our service representatives are occupied”?

I hope your system dies not out of malice but so you can go through what far too many people are experiencing. Of course you can always fall back on your Ps3 but most people don’t have the finances to drop over a thousand dollars on 2 systems.

One thing about axing the Ps2 system…

Even the 360 is poaching some of the ps2 games (bully). Personally i’m glad i’ll have a chance to play Manhunt2 on the Ps3 even if the graphics aren’t shiny next-gen quality. Good games sell themselves on their gameplay… not because you can see every chin hair on the main characters face.

Says the guy playing in SD :) I know..,

In comparison.. i had much more fun playing Shaow of the Colossus than i did playing Condemned. Resident Evil 4 over Gears of War.

  • @40cal,

vgchartz July first week was ending July 7 so they started tracking on July 1st. True, they ended on July the 28th so that leaves three days unaccounted for that NDP did account. Wow, the 360 did sell A LOT during these three days :-/

    @Jeigh,

I like the PS3 (why would have bought one otherwise) but not Sony’s hype and spin. If you read my posts historyt at the official Playstation PS3 forum (where you’re also a member and were your fanboysim shows, you would know that (although I do dislike the controller’s ergonomic but that a personal taste). If my comments make me a troll, then yours make you a fool for falling for their hypes and spins…

PS. I’m the only one in my group of friend that has a PS3 (the others either play on PC or 360) and I’ve had to ‘defend’ the PS3 in more than one occasion. The Lair gameplay video that was posted earlier this week really impressed some of them (graphically).

  • Some Sales info (may be old for some)…

Since the beginning of July 07 the PS3 has out sold the 360 in sales every week(Worldwide) up until today.

    http://vgchartz.com/weekly.php

  • @scorpio,

Yes indeed, according to vgchartz but we know they grossly underestimated the 360 sales in July for the USA and their result are accumulative (for total sales) so don’t pay too much attention to them. I’m sure the same must have happened to the other consoles as well…

  • who buy the trashbox360 is just a loser…

    xbox 360 is the new Sega’s Dreamcast…

    fall baby fall…just in time…

  • @Melklkor

Crikey!…that’s the most well thought out, eloquently phrased reasoned argument I think I’ve ever seen. You’re right – all 360 owners should just throw their consoles out the window and mourn the fact they have been so stupid to have enjoyed such great games for so long.

    How old are you?

  • Hurray. Lets hope these trends increase. I got the PS3 because its multifunctional and does more than the other machines. You need to show this to people. Have you seen the iphone commercials, Thats a $500 phone and people are buying it. Show them everything it has to offer, entice them with features and show the user friendlyness and multifunctions of the console. How are you trying to sell consoles without commercials, show simple games like rub a duc, flow or watever to show off the sixaxis. show them Ridge Racer 7 sixaxis controll show warhawk sixaxis control, and jumping into a multiplayer game with ease, show video chat, comon you got it all at your disposal. make people at least curious about PS3. Everyone seems to be intimidated by the machine, and then theres “wii would like to play”. The wii is seling without harcore games, its possible to sell PS3 the same way HYPE HYPE HYPE it sells, make PS3 trendy and show off the user friendlyness of the interface like the iphone comertials, internet do-to-do, pictures do-to-do, video do-to-do, music do-to-do, messaging do-to-do, music and messaging do-to-do, that sells a $500 phone, this same theme can be used with PS3. Another sell point is HD. Show PS3 as the supreme HD source, that it is! I think people are confused about the console, so clear this up NOW. Before its too late! ADVERTISE ! ! !

  • @Demon

My point was that I don’t WANT real life or close to it. I go to video games to escape the real world and have fun. I don’t come to play video games to have to eat food, use the bathroom and all that.

Granted, having realistic physics in racing games is a good thing… but how far off were we on the PS2 in the physics dept? And was it because it was to processor intensive or was it because real isn’t “fun?” I don’t know the answer to that.

For me the Wii’s lack of graphical prowess is a bummer and a blessing. Companies have to make games that are fun because if they don’t, all you can fall back on is “that game looks like a$$!” On the PS3 you can make a game really pretty, and still have the game be a$$, but at least it looks pretty.

I’m not for or against any system personally. I own them all. The Wii gets the most play time… but only because of GCN backwards compatibility and my copy of Twilight Princess for the GCN. Well, that and Virtual Console games. ;-)

PS3 lacks games I want to play. As does the 360. 2 games each coming that I want to check out. Wii has no less than 6 by the end of the year.

For me, the reason to purchase the PS3 when I did was for Blu-Ray movies. And my reason still stands and it is why I still own my system. That and Gundam Musou (Japanese ver of Dynasty Warriors: Gundam).

  • I read about nintendo wii sales reaching the big 1 million in Uk yesterday http://www.ecbiz.co.uk Nintendo must be delighted about their wii. I Wonder how many months before Sony reaches 1 million ps3 sales? Would have been much faster if there were more games and better games and a 20gb console and better tv support.. stop me before i run out of blog space..

  • at the moment, i am looking at sony in Europe/USA and all i am seeing is dead air.

why still no advertisement for upcoming games? ratchet and clank for instance? sony used to have great ads in Europe/USA but recently it’s truly nothing noteworthy.
it’s killing me the lack of output sony is giving, it’s almost like something strange is going on at sony.

  • it is good

  • While I certainly appreciate this on some level I think its probably more appropriate to limit the Playstation blog to strictly Playstation news and let other sites out there handle the NPD numbers as they have far more traffic anyways.

The blog here is really more for the Playstation faithful (just purchased Jeanne D’arc today, BTW) who will probably already know the numbers.

  • wow some of u guys are really depressing, the ps3 hasnt even been out a full year and u want it to be outselling the xbox? ok the xbox has sold around 11 mil and the ps3 around 9, dont you think thats good, byt the time the ps3 is out as long as the xbox has it will be way passed it, you guys need to be patient, im waiting for new new software, rumble, and mgs4, trust me, ps3 is going to come out on top

  • Sony……You are the electronic giants of the world!!! Be it a Corporation from the Japs or not, you guys are the top dogs and I still believe that despite the sudden change in your marketing strategy over all. As good of an effort that both M$ and Nintendo have made against you guys, they still in my opinion pail in comparison. I am more impressed with M$ than I am with Nintendo and there lucky hit with the Wii. You guys have to get back to being “Sony”, the best company on planet earth when it comes to consumer entertainment electronics and electronics in general. My advice to you all as a corporation would be for you to just be SONY. A snobbish and fancy and upper-class company that backs up just what the hell they say despite the competiton! SONY wake up and smell the coffe, M$ just has money and that’s it, Nintendo has brains with no dough, and you guys have brains, creativity, money, prestige, a high reputation, fame, influence, and power as an electronics giant. Frankly, I am sick of you guys trying to be M$ or rather trying to be a mix of M$ and Nintendo. You are much better than both of those companies and you are so much more professional than they ever will be. I would advise you guys to take your eyes off of your competiton which gained on you because you all somehow fell asleep while you were still crushing them to the ground. Here’s what most peole are not telling you!

1.No one wants to see M$ or Nintendo win.
    2. Everyone is rooting for guys to win along with gaming analysts everywhere.
3.Your marketing scheme sucks and it needs to be overhauled, big time!
4.No one really has a clue as to why PS3 is more powerful than Xbox360 other than the Cell processor.
5.Stop making stupid and ignorant comments toward your competition.
6.Playstation 3 looks good and plays good but it could use some design tweaks like making it a bit smaller with a more appealing box-art for the cases, making design changes on the text of the console to be more sleek and not so bulky lookin’
7.Just give the damn developers who are bad-mouthing your console as being “too hard” to develop for the devs at a discount price or bargain for a price that that they’ll universally accept.
8.Playstation network is an absolute disgrace compared to Xbox Live. Do whatever you can in a SONY way to beat M$ at their own game.
9.The Key to beating M$ is transforming your online to be a better and more appealing experience than theirs as well as allowing developers to tap into the “true POTENTIAL power” of the PS3. You guys have to basicly prove to the gamer and general consumer alike that your system is superior in every which way to the “weak 60”.
10.You guys have ruled and still do rule with the PS2 at least. Use all of your gained knowledge and experience in this industry and completely surprise and shock those who lost faith in you, and put
both M$ and Nintendo back in their places as always being second-best to you, SONY Computer Entertainment Inc. of America, Japan, and Europe.

You can beat these guys! What you all have to do as a company is admit to your shortcomings and hold each other accountable for what you have allowed to happen. No one in their right mind would have ever thought that SONY would be a distant third. Use all of this anger and frustation toward crushing competition and regaining and recovering the people that were once so loyal to you. I wish you guys the best, and I hope you will take everything that I have shared with you into serious consideration.

  • @ the6one

1.No one wants to see M$ or Nintendo win

…errr, are you sure that’s the case?….me thinks you’re slightly disillusioned. Check the sales figures – combine 360 & Wii sales figures and they faaaaar exceed PS3 figures and at the end of the day people tend to vote with their wallets.

3.Your marketing scheme sucks and it needs to be overhauled, big time!

….totally agree – PS3 advertising presence has been minimal compared to its rivals which is a big, big, BIG mistake. The only people that know about the power of PS3 are Sony fan boys and Technophiles….which is a small percentage of Sony’s targeted demographic. In the UK you can’t move for 360/Wii adverts!….can’t remember seeing a PS3 advert in over 5-6 weeks.

7.Just give the damn developers who are…

Your spot on with this comment – why do you think most developers positively embrace 360/Wii development?…because they get working code libraries, dev kits that don’t change spec every 2 weeks and they stand to make money on their investment due to a huge installed user base. Although you’ll be surprised to know that Sony actually ‘gives away’ dev kits – it’s nothing to do with price but everything to do with code support, access to profilers and working libraries – something the 360 & Wii have and something the PS3 doesn’t. I know this for a fact as I use both 360 & PS3 dev kits on a daily basis.

9.The Key to beating M$ is transforming your online to be a better and more appealing experience…..

Again I agree with you here – and I think ‘Home’ is the one thing that really could make or break of the PS3. Simply copying XBL is a bad mistake and makes Sony out to be unimaginative plagiarists (Wii remote V’s 6-axis anyone?! ;) – but I think ‘Home’ could be the real saving grace – something the others don’t have, something that people may invest as much time in as they do full price games….if it’s done right of course, and if it’s done soon. How’s that Beta coming along?

10.You guys have ruled and still do rule…

Again I agree with you – although I’ve bought a 360 in preference to a PS3 (mainly due to cost, games available and online functionality) I’ve always been a Sony supporter. I own a Sony TV, camera, laptop, PS1, PS2 & phone.

I’ve always equated Sony with quality but the way we were treated in the UK made my mind up after sitting on the fence for many months before deciding to buy a next gen (now current gen) console. The disappointment of the price cut (Ha ha!) games available and the complete balls up on the online functionality made me buy a 360 – a move I’m yet to regret – MS fan boy?….no, if anything I’ve always loathed MS for their monopolistic attitude and almost wish the 360 was made by Sony and the PS3 by MS then I’d be happy both game wise and spiritually.

  • @scorpio : Even though the Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 last week ( as I predicted :) ), the PS3 is still ahead worldwide for the month of August. Essentially it is the US sales that prop up the Xbox 360 figures. Since WarHawk’s release and good ratings ( I’ve seen 8+ in most reviews ) and if upcoming titles are as good to play as they are to look at, this can only bode well for the PS3.

I’m expecting some really special announcements at this month’s Tokyo Game Show as it’s in Sony home turf and this combined with a price drop for the 80GB version and a holiday season advertising campaign in November December should push up sales further.

It’s not until March next year though that we will start seeing the PS3 consistently surpass Xbox 360 hardware and software sales figures as more of the 10Million Xbox 360 consoles die because their latest games will push the console to breaking point.
Sure the fanboys will get replacements and say that they don’t care. But when your car has been in the garage for more time than you have had time to drive it, then you need to think about getting a new car.

Btw, does anyone know if new for old replacments of Xbox 360s count as part of new sales figures. It would not surprise me if that was the case, and If so, then the 360 is not selling as much as touted, just that there is some dodgy accounting going on.

  • Sales are up, software is out, the drought is over. The PS3 reign starts now.

  • Sales won’t go up unless you…

    Fix the Warhawk Ranking System!

  • Here are those August worldwide sales figures…

    From W/E 05/08/2007 – W/E 26/08/2007
    PS3 : 367790
    Xbox 360 : 345376

    Pachter watch out.

  • sales will go up if sony gets games 360 dont have and get a game like halo or better like 360 did with gta u no saints row

  • SONY……

    Just be SONY………..

    Live and Breathe SONY……….

    Act like SONY…………

    Naturally be SONY……..

Be who you are which is SONY………

Don’t worry about anything else but SONY….

    I believe in you SONY……….

    Get back to being SONY………

    SONY compete against SONY……….

No one is better than SONY……

    Be humble SONY……….

    Realize who you are SONY………

Crush your competition if you even consider your competition be competiton SONY……….

Kaz Hirai, lead SONY back to dominance.

In conclusion, SONY just be SONY……..

    SONY………..prove the naysayers wrong.

    SONY………..

    Like No Other…………..

  • Savage, second week in a row that the 360 has outsold the PS3 worldwide and 5th week in a row in the US, according to vgchartz.

Lair and Warhawk also took only the 7th and 8th spot on the software sale, beaten by Blue Dragon, Madden NFL 2008 (360), Wii Sports, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 (360), Bioshock (360) and Metroid Prime 3.

  • Hi Sly,
    Figures For W/E 02/09/2007
    Xbox 360 : 109,959
    PS3 : 93,146

    W/E 05/08/2007 -> W/E 02/09/2007
    PS3 : 460936
    Xbox 360 : 455335

But in terms of the whole month of August the PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 world wide. Imagine that Sly, the machine with less games and that is more expensive that it’s competitor.

Actually it has now been 8 weeks ( since 15/07 ) that overall the PS3 has sold more machines than the PS3. Next week, the Xbox 360 will probably surpass the PS3, especially with Halo 3 looming. But as I said previously this will revert back to high PS3 sales in October to December due to RROD.

I’ve said it before the US is what is propping up XBox 360 sales world wide because every where else on the planet, people are buying more PS3s on average than Xbox 360s.
If Sony would drop the price of the PS3 in the other regions, the Xbox would not be looking so good.

  • Oops, typo. It should read : “the PS3 has sold more machines than the Xbox 360″…

  • Savage, not hard to imagine, the PS3 is a cheap ( but good) Bluray player. Look at the sales of Lair and Warhawk. Obviously, more users are buying it for its Bluray playback capabilities than games.

Good thing (for Sony) Japan is xenophobic about the 360 though, otherwise world wide sales would depict a different picture…
