We are all very excited here for the release of the new Folding@home (FAH) client for the PS3! This latest update addresses issues in two major areas: user requests and improving the accuracy of the core that we have running on the SPU. In addition, we totally revised the rendering engine for the molecules and added a more sophisticated display format, which is closer to the imagery you find in biology textbooks. This actually required a protocol change and the protein needs to be described in much more detail from Stanford University’s side of things.
We’re lucky to have a very dedicated group of FAH users and many of you have submitted requests, and ideas, for improving the application. While it’s challenging to address every issue raised, we did try to address your burning ones, especially those that interfere with the science or slow down the performance of the PS3 computation network.
Another really cool feature that was also requested by the FAH community is the support of PSP Remote Play. In this latest version we enabled this feature so you can now access FAH remotely from your PSP (that you already own, since it’s such a cool little gadget) which is an awesome combination since the CELL processor is actually doing the Folding job, but the PSP fully controls the UI so you can carry it around with you.
Of course, we still kept all the familiar and useful features of previous versions, such as the IP lights and Multilanguage support for all PS3 supported languages.
It is heart-warming to watch the community rally behind this project – this passion is in turn encouraging us to continue to look for ways to make it better.

Interesting. I’ll take a look tommorrow (If it’s up). All remote play really needs now is game support. So I can play a game and watch TV at the same time. : )

@Noam
Thanks, that’s all I was wondering about.

Now this is what I wanted to see from the blog.
Will this allow RP while your system is running folding at home, or just show you folding at home over remote play? Chosing between the two is hard. Videos on demand, versus curing cancer.

My update was stuck at 0% for ages. If anyone else has this problem hit O (Back) and then restart the PS3 then try it again, it should work fine then.

To the whiners. This is great news. The PS3 client is starting to get advanced calculations. Prior to the update it mostly ran indeterminate GPU like calculations. this means that advanced users can set the PS3 to run deeper calculations.
I love this update to FAH and to the Blog post. This is more of what I want to see on the Blog. Articles on Playstation and Playstation experience, not news that Lair went gold.

f olding at home is very boring i do not see a purpose in doing it
At the begining i did it and i got no joy out of it
i understand it is not supposed to entertain me and it might very well help stanford with finding cures for diseases
But there is no insentive to do it
i would do it if u could play music or something while it folds or whatever
i used to just charge my controlers with the program running but it got old soon and i just quit

IVE GOT THE GREATEST IDEA!!!!
Sony, F@H team, whoever:
There seems to be some complaints that F@H is a “waste of time” or “boring”. Some people have no idea what its doing and why they should even bother. And although i think its great we having something the PS3 can do (for a great cause) while we’re not using it, i understand their concerns.
So while playing Super Stardust HD (awesome game, if you dont have it BUY IT!!) I realized…why not add some gameplay to F@H!?!?!
Like SSDHD, there can be some shooter elements to keep “the bored” busy while they fold. Shooting the stuff that causes cancer or whatever can be fun!!
Maybe keeping track of high scores that people get can keep people interested. After all, most owners of PS3’s are gamers.
Hey, i think its a great idea. What do you think guys? How about you Sony and F@H team, sounds cool eh?

Brilliant. That must mean leaving electronic devices on unattended for numerous hours at a time has absolutely no fire hazard risk at all! TWAAAAAAAT!
WOW!!!!!!!

It’s just not as big as he makes it out to be. I mean really if there was a fire then the PS3 wouldn’t be working probably.

This is another good update to the client. I’ve completed 303 units since March.
The remote play addition is a good start….BUT It would be nice to be able use the PSP to access the PS3 remotely while folding.
Anytime I’m not using the PS3 it is folding. Now the issue is on Thursdays I use my PSP to start downloading the new content in the store remotely. Currently I have to leave my PS3 in the remote play mode which means no folding.
It would be great to leave my PS3 in F@H and still be able to start remote play with my PSP. Then I could use the PSP to start the downloads, reload F@H, and quit remote play.
Overall a good update for the F@H client. Remote Play needs more functionality with the PS3!

Does RP in F@H work by setting the PS3 to remote play, then choosing F@H from the PSP’s XMB? It would be cool if Folding@home always had Remote Play running in the background, so that you could leave the client folding on your PS3 when you leave the house, then check it with your PSP whenever you feel like it.

Like others have pointed out, the ability to multitask while folding (at whatever performance penalty) would be a welcome addition. The new visuals are a great idea, but alas, I’ve yet to see them since the update hasn’t reached my neck of the woods.

Thanks for the update, this is all certainly good news. I am running one of the new WUs in advanced mode now, it is huge (750,000 Frames) and VERY fast (0.0361S/Frame). I have to agree with some of the others on the remote play. I think we may have gotten this one backwards. The current rp feature will only really prohibit folding. We need the ability wake the PS3 from folding to rp, then have the system return to folding after remote play is complete. I’m not about to sacrifice all that valuable folding time, leaving my console doing nothing but waiting for a rp connection. That seems like a terrible waste.

Do you think folding @ home could or would work a deal with google and get the google earth on home. I know there have been a few of us asking about that before. There are some people that are worried about their privacy. I heard that the yellow dots only show where the IP address is at and not the persons real location. If so why not try, alot of people would love this upgrade!

The “backbone” option is only available on certain proteins, right? Is that why it’s greyed out? And what exactly is the difference between normal mode and advanced mode? I picked advanced since I leave it on 24/7, but I’d like to know what has really changed.

“I picked advanced since I leave it on 24/7, but I’d like to know what has really changed.”
Its for folding that takes longer time.

My PS3 died on my birthday after finishing 20 WU back in April. It then cost me $170 USD and a whole month to fix it, not mentioning about the annoying custom… So I quit FAH, sorry bud, but it scared me.

Am I the only one who thinks this, but did Sony get Folding@home and Remote Play BACKWARDS….
I don’t really care to see folding@home graphics on my PSP via remote play… I want to be able to leave my Playstation 3 running Folding@home all the time, and only when I need to use remote play be able to interupt F@H. Someone prove me wrong and tell me that this is the most efficient way to keep F@H going as often as possible.

nagus69 | August 22nd, 2007 at 4:12 am
Wish i could surf the internet while folding – seems we only have access to the F@H Website. Or am i missing something?

LordOfRuin | August 22nd, 2007 at 4:18 am
A lot of whining peeps here at the moment. Hey, I got the update, it worked. F@H runs when I’m at work or at night when I’m not using the PS3 for anything else. Some people like to turn their unit off when it’s not needed, fine, then F@H isn’t for them. I don’t get enjoyment out of it, but if I can contribute computing power to a good cause, then that’s okay by me.
Imagine if we could use this latent computing power in another way, not F@H, but similarly set up, but where the computing power was sold. Each users PS3 would then be generating revenue for the user. Stats would no longer be for just cudos, but for cash. And as long as the cash was more than the electricity it took to run the PS3, then woo hoo. Hey, universities, military, corporations, governments, would you like access to terraflop computing? Willing to pay for it?
93
LordOfRuin | August 22nd, 2007 at 4:30 am
Or even Petaflop computing.

To everyone who keeps asking what the Folding@Home client does, please learn to use Google. This is a huge project with lots of press coverage. It has its own Wikipedia entry describing how it works as well.

maluraq | August 22nd, 2007 at 7:50 am
My major request for the Folding@Home client is to allow it to run in the background and still let me use the PS3 to view photos and listen to music at least.
I can understand there’s no point to having it try to run in idle cycles while playing a game or watching a movie, but I’d like to be able to not shut it off to listen to music then turn it back on again later manually.
It would be VERY cool to have this running full-screen as the background app behind my XMB when I hit the PS button and keep running while I do other non-gaming things — we already know the web browser will load with it running.

How low can you go by bashing F@home. Either you are a loser or your parents hate you. Whoever bashes F@home needs to commit suicide.
