The LAIR Score: Part Two

Posted by John Debney // LAIR Composer

Lair

Following up on my entry earlier this week, without walking you through the whole score, I wanted to call out a few tracks that stand out as prime examples of the principal themes contained in the score for LAIR. When you hear the elegant strains of the “Civilization” theme (Asylia theme), you’ll notice hints at the scope and power of the Asylian culture. It is high culture indeed, yet there is a dark side here.

“Crossing at Dawn-Bridge Battle” is an example of some of the more brutal and textural musical colors. Using primitive skin drums and ethnic woodwinds such as the “Makruna” and “Phillistine horn,” the ethnic side of Lair is revealed. This is a world we have only dreamed of, and for me, listening to the score, it comes to life. Musically, we must experience the majesty and scope of this world, and highlight its many sounds.

I could go on for quite a while describing the beauty of, for instance, Karen Han’s incredibly moving Erhu solo on “Mokai theme,” but that’s enough from me for today, so I’ll step back and let you the listener enjoy for yourself the amazing world of LAIR.

Simply Amazing!! I was a bit put off when Lair reviews weren’t that good but this makes me think with music like this the game must be amazing!

scareglow88  |  August 15th, 2007 at 8:57 pm

I cant help but want it but I liked factor 5 star wars games so I am in.I don’t trust all the guys that reviewed it mainly 1 up IGN said they liked it a lot and all the guys at insomniac said they loved it.

Oh man, so many emotions in that piece; sadness, fear and hope. That is great.

Beautiful. Absolutely beautifully played, excellent score. I wish I can just play the game just to listen to this music. Wonderful job. Keep up the updates.

bobtheduck  |  August 15th, 2007 at 10:34 pm

@14 those 3 people all worked for the same magazine, and had an earlier build of the game, not the final build… So… Yeah, just try the game yourself… It’s a drought, the worst you can do is lose 7 bucks to a rental…

turstkill  |  August 15th, 2007 at 11:19 pm

Amazing score! Reminds me of LOTR in the best way possible. I can’t believe this is for a game!! How amazing.

azad_champ  |  August 15th, 2007 at 11:39 pm

Nice and smooth soundtrack.

63

Ryman  |  August 15th, 2007 at 11:56 pm

That’s for the Main Menu??? I’m just gonna leave the Menu idle just to listen to that piece.

roadclimber  |  August 16th, 2007 at 12:14 am

Someone else brought this up but i’ll just chime in again.

Would it be possible to get a psp section? I managed to find a review of Jeanne D’arc (a game which i was going to pass on ) from IGN and they gave it a 9/10.
They couldn’t say enough good things about it and now i’m thinking of adding it to the pile of things to pick up within the next couple of months.

Actually you have mentioned the PsP slim but i was thinking more along the lines of supporting games like you do for the ps3.

now if you could just perfect blu ray UMDs…

krackchap  |  August 16th, 2007 at 1:56 am

KatanaKing  |  August 16th, 2007 at 3:23 am

I have a really bad feeling about this game, although it looks and sounds great after seeing the gameplay video’s i’m thinking boring and repetative. Maybe thats why there are no demo’s. Maybe thats why the demo is due out after the release.
One thing is for sure, i will be waiting for a demo till i buy ( if i ever do) i don’t go off game reviews, i like to play a game myself before spending 60$ on it.
But seeing as though Sony do not think demo’s are important, as you can see this by the lack of content in the PSN after 1 year and the even more lack of games on the shelves. I hope things pick up as i have never been so dissapointed in a console in my 25 years of gaming. And i am a big SONY fan.

killgtx  |  August 16th, 2007 at 3:48 am

We want lair demo…

70

Grym  |  August 16th, 2007 at 3:50 am

I can think about at least 10 FPS games that are more repetive than this game. A game can be good an repetive.

71

ShinnokDrako  |  August 16th, 2007 at 4:19 am

I post here:

When we’ll get a Lair demo? For months they said it was in July, but then they release it.. after the game?? It doesn’t make sense! Ppl wanna try a game BEFORE it’s out, so they can decide. Dunno but….

Europe is going to get very mad at Sony and its PSN, i’ve just seen the update for today…. where are the demos? Where are the things the other countries got? A lot of ppl complain about it, and we hear only:

“We work for you, you’ll see how many things you’ll find on the PSN in the future!”

Well… we want to use our PS3 NOW and we’d like those things NOW (i’m talking about the other stores…).

Where’s the Ratchet&Clank demo? And Stranglehold? Bah… europen Store is going to be completely useless… no PS1 classics even… it’s an insult from my point of view…. i’m a Sony fan but i don’t feel like saying “nice work!”, but the opposite…

bye

72

dante90ita  |  August 16th, 2007 at 4:39 am

the store is poor ………
we want lair demo ,ratchet and clanck demo, stranglehold demo, uncharted demo, we want games games games……
we want home , we want…. but we have got nothing!

73

hammertime  |  August 16th, 2007 at 4:44 am

Who on earth would pay for this game just for the music because thats all it will be worth buying for, the games gonna be rubbish and a big waste of time..Driver 3 anybody?

74

Kedaro  |  August 16th, 2007 at 4:50 am

Only a demo will clear up the confusion of the EGM rating, and whatnot…

75

al  |  August 16th, 2007 at 4:55 am

Hey im not here to talk about this game or any thing but i would like to know the price of the 80 gb playstation 3 in the Middle East or Saudi Arabia or Jeddah please.

I would appreciate it if somebody told the price to me in Riyals.

76

hammertime  |  August 16th, 2007 at 4:55 am

I Agree @ ShinnokDrako and dante90ita,

Ive had my PS3 since march and still when i turn it on it gets turned off after 30 seconds, i spend £400+ pounds just to waste electricty !

im still kicking myself for not waiting for the price drop but i belived that all these games where on the way only for them to be but back ….. all the time.

I feel sorry for you guys in the states who have had their waste of space for neary a YEAR!!!!

Thanks for reading my rant =)

77

Davitr0n  |  August 16th, 2007 at 5:04 am

Haha, for some reason I keep picturing a ton of zombies, but instead of saying, “Braaaaiiinnnsss…” they are saying, “Demoooosss…..”

78

HeavenlyGamer  |  August 16th, 2007 at 5:10 am

Love the music so far how can I help with music for games I compose myself.

79

ShinnokDrako  |  August 16th, 2007 at 5:14 am

@Davitr0n

Yes, i had the same imagine in my mind ;D and it’s not so different from the reality. We have the worse store, always so poor… USA have images for the XMB, Jap have a million of PS1 classics… when we’re lucky we have 3 videos and 2 trailers… the sadness against this Store is increasing here in Europe….

@Dave Karraker
Sorry if i bother you, but the situation has to change at least a bit. I wanna get rid of those M$ fanboys that keep insulting the Store and the things inside… it’s a bit annoying, but the worse thing is… they’re right! ;(( Lack of demos/classics/little games… and pls, no answers like “we’ll see in the future” or “the things will get better soon”. I’ve heard this since i bought my PS3…

80

Kedaro  |  August 16th, 2007 at 5:19 am

@ShinnokDrako
Don’t worry it’ll get better soon…
We just have to wait, and see in the future…

lol jk… you are right, mostly, but I believe you’re a little too harsh, Sony hasn’t charged for much of anything besides full games or add-on packs where xbox live is a constant yearly fee, I think our eyes will be opened by Leipzig.

81

blizzard182  |  August 16th, 2007 at 5:46 am

@ShinnokDrako and everyone else telling things about the Store

Yeah, we all want more stuff, we all know it.

But come on, I don´t bought the PS3 for the Store. Enjoy what you have, which is more than enough to make you happy.

2007 is the year for the PS3 to settle. 2008 is ours.

82

LeetPCUser  |  August 16th, 2007 at 6:41 am

That score is simply amazing. The music for this game is honestly some of the best I have heard for a video game. Keep up the great work!

83

reson8er  |  August 16th, 2007 at 6:53 am

I STILL can’t believe people trust EGM reviews.

/sigh the worst magazine out there for games behind Gamepro, and all of a sudden their word is like gold.

I will be getting Lair the day it releases.

84

leetfoo  |  August 16th, 2007 at 7:31 am

Can’t wait for Lair!
Don’t care what EGM says, and have no idea why anyone else does. Read a magazine and you’ll see who pays their bills.

85

TylerOwnsYou1986  |  August 16th, 2007 at 8:11 am

Put the soundtrack on the psn.

86

dante90ita  |  August 16th, 2007 at 8:22 am

PS3_123106  |  August 16th, 2007 at 8:47 am

#4 is on to something, why not offer it as a download in the next PSN update?

90

killgtx  |  August 16th, 2007 at 9:27 am

91

silzilla  |  August 16th, 2007 at 9:28 am

I am using Linux, I am on the “official” playstation blog. I am looking at PS3 content. Everyone with a windows machine can access the music content. Linux users S.O.L. Guess you like to support your direct competitors software before your own? Maybe Lair demo will come to Live first too?

92

Farhad91  |  August 16th, 2007 at 9:48 am

Very interesting read, and it sounds great too. Thanks for the behind the scenes look.

95

Violater  |  August 16th, 2007 at 11:20 am

Thats all well and Good, when can we expect a Demo to see all this awesomeness for ourselves?

96

sectionz  |  August 16th, 2007 at 12:20 pm

i would buy the game for the soundtrack ALONG based on this piece .. if you put this in the PS Store i would buy it .. that is of course there isnt a way to get it off of the game itself ;)

2 major music in a row .. Nitin S. and now this .. wow.

97

pr1m3_5u5p3ct  |  August 16th, 2007 at 12:45 pm

The musical score is very important to me, music in general is a big selling point in my opinion. I can’t wait till the day that we can play our own music in game. Even if it is for ps store games, being able to play your own music would be great. I would love to listen to some ACDC while playing mortal kombat 2, super stardust hd, etc…

98

Poet  |  August 16th, 2007 at 12:53 pm

I’ve hit this post at least a dozen times already on various occasions just to listen to this music. It is excellent! Looking forward to a cinematic experience with this game, I hope it doesn’t disappoint. Any chance we can get our hands on the soundtrack?

99

Madness3120  |  August 16th, 2007 at 1:12 pm

Yeap the PS3 buzz has fell off quick! I dont think Sony cares. They got our money now they’ll just sit back and let the system go down hill.

@ madness

Did Sony let you down with PS1/PS2?
