Firmware Update (v1.92)

Posted by Patrick Seybold // Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media

As Kotaku, Joystiq and others are pointing out, we’ve released a minor firmware update (version 1.92) for the PS3. This update focuses on some PS3 compatibility and playability issues for select titles. A search site for looking up compatible titles is also in the works, as soon as it’s live, I’ll publish a link to it here.

Update: The compatibility search site is now live.

Sony, when will we see the list of the top 10 features users wanted from the firmware upgrades?

@Sony

Could you tell us if the upcoming tuner will upscale SD to HD video sources ?

hey i downloaded the new update, but now i can get into the playstation store whats going on ?

54

torman-p  |  September 4th, 2007 at 2:13 pm

I just downloaded the update. I read about the problems people were having with it so I went ahead and tried pretty much everything on my system and I guess Im one of the lucky ones. Everything seems to be working in proper order. The only thing I would say is that it takes me more than one try to log on the Playstation dedicated servers on WarHawk, but who knows, so far, not too bad.

Roy  |  September 4th, 2007 at 2:22 pm

Yeah, this update made it really hard for me to sign into the PSN, takes several tries after several network errors, and signing into Warhawk is giving me problems now, you can keep firmware updates like this thanks Sony, because I don’t give a damn about backwards compatibility. If I sound angry, well I am, Warhawk was giving me enough problems, without the PSN giving me a good share. Maybe you should wait until you have some worthwhile things to release in a firmware update or make the .0x firmwares optional, because not using my PS3 for 15 minutes (on a good day) and wasting my download limit to get no more functionality really grinds my gears.

RandomEarthling  |  September 4th, 2007 at 2:24 pm

Another update? Can we please just get the 2.0 update already. These small updates are getting tedious. Just give us big new features rather than tiny fixes please!

StreetKillaz  |  September 4th, 2007 at 2:44 pm

I think sonys doing a great job updating the Ps3 and PSN its looking great Sony..Im sure we all should wait for HOME and then 2.00 firmware update will be out..Im sick off u people going on like lil kids saying why didnt they tell us there was a update and what was it..Well if u look when u download it shows u what it did..It did for me?..And u people about warhawk just cool out u idiots, im sure there working on it..Just like MotorStorm update they said it was coming and its coming..And the one dude says tiny fixes with the firmware update, so u would like no fixes but new stuff like XMB in game, so tell me smart one..No fixes means Lock ups and crappy Ps3? u would like that ok Sony no more fixes ok u people are idiots….SONY FOR ONE TAKE UR TIME LIKE U DID ON PS3 AND TAKE UR TIME ON FIRMWARE UPDATES thank u very much for PS3 I LOVE IT…great console thanks again

Kinglink  |  September 4th, 2007 at 2:45 pm

Can we at least get a change log, no one cares about change logs really but they at least show you’re being open about your changes. This sounds a bit shady (oh it fixes playability but we won’t tell you exactly what)

59

tech110  |  September 4th, 2007 at 2:46 pm

I always complaned about socom on line but this by far has more server errors.

Insane_Rooster  |  September 4th, 2007 at 2:52 pm

“This update focuses on some PS3 compatibility and playability issues for select titles”

And these issues and titles are….?

We’re looking into some of the network comments from above. I’ll get back to you as soon as I have an answer.

64

cruisx  |  September 4th, 2007 at 3:18 pm

very well thx

MrCamo  |  September 4th, 2007 at 3:18 pm

I cannot wait until Sony releases 2.0 and there is no Home or In-game XMB. Sony should just post a complain here blog spot. Who is the person from Sony that said we would get anything on 2.0? I hope the 2.0 update only adds the ability to turn your XMB pink so you whiners can whine some more.

66

MrCamo  |  September 4th, 2007 at 3:20 pm

LOL at myself:)

67

MrCamo  |  September 4th, 2007 at 3:24 pm

Patrick,
Is there any plans for In-game XMB? i have not heard any official word and planty of people are just assuming it is coming. maybe you could shed some light?

68

Shaky Jake  |  September 4th, 2007 at 3:26 pm

I can see there is mixed opinion above about whether or not we should be grateful for an update for the PS2 or whether it should be v2.0

At the end of the day I am getting mithered by 360 mates who are laughing their tits off at the stuttering nature of the PS3. I stick firmly to the belief that the PS3 will reign supreme but it’s disheartening to hear that after paying full UK whack for this toy only to find that the games are not up to scratch and some of the biggies promised are being delayed.

The update as far as i can see is dissappointing - we know why they’re here - to stop potential chipping and hacking but to us legit users - this seems to be your main driver - ensuring max profit and max gaming capability.

Dear Sony:Please just release 1 single exclusive before xmas - that’s all that is needed to prove to us that you’re committed to rewarding your big spenders and show to the others that your a big player.

Rant over….

Is anyone else having problems with GRAW 2 online im getting kick off a lot more and im also having problems with Oblivion freezing on me a lot too and i never had any problems with that game and Lair is giving me problems too

71

Cesar  |  September 4th, 2007 at 3:32 pm

Well it work with some games and destroy others dont worry the new 1.93 is coming to fix what the 1.92 did to your ps3 and for all those that buy Lair (me) it plays better on the psp it dont work good with the xiaxis

72

DiRTDOG  |  September 4th, 2007 at 3:37 pm

Does this one “You can now play AVCHD-format video files” mean that the PS3 supports larger files than 4gb finally? Or do I have to cut up my movies?

73

Stoffinator  |  September 4th, 2007 at 3:48 pm

@ Patrick Seybold | September 4th, 2007 at 3:14 pm

Please look into the controller issue I said above too. At $60 bucks a piece its kind of pissing to have them not work now. And yes, I’ve emailed you guys about this matter.

zinmaster  |  September 4th, 2007 at 3:56 pm

The 480p/1080i HD TV owners are left out in the cold once again. This is getting old Sony. The console has been out for almost a year and you still can’t play 720p PS3 games in HD on 480p/1080i HD TVs. I and many others supported Sony last week buy buying Warhawk and Lair. It would be nice if you reciprocated and stop giving early HD TV adopters the shaft. Step up to the plate and fix the problem. We all know you are trying to sell more TVs. Still, you could you at least be honest and let us know if the problem will or will not be fixed instead of leading us on with a false sense of hope. I plan to buy another HD TV in the next 6 months. However, I will buy another brand TV if this is not addressed in the next firmware. You need to remember that output specs for the PS3 don’t denote this shortfall for 480p/1080i HD TVs. I would not be so upset if this disclaimer was indeed published with the console’s specs.

Scariest update ever from the reports trickling in across the internet. I’ll be avoiding this one for now.

76

NBCraftsman  |  September 4th, 2007 at 3:58 pm

Aloha, SCEA…

Thanks for the 1.92 FW (I have had zero problems with this update after simple/obvious cookie & cache clearing).

Please post *ChangeLog* when available.

Thanks again…..peace.

I learned my lesson after firmware update 1.90 broke the ps3 browsers ability to search for videos at Veoh.com

I’m still mad about it since it was a worthless update. Never update unless it’s really worth it!

78

StreetKillaz  |  September 4th, 2007 at 4:12 pm

HEY people did u even read?

Patrick Seybold | September 4th, 2007 at 3:14 pm

We’re looking into some of the network comments from above. I’ll get back to you as soon as I have an answer.

So there looking into it OK

79

Kxpuc27  |  September 4th, 2007 at 4:12 pm

how about a changelog right BEFORE or during the patch going live not hours later when everyone looks for them like easter eggs

80

sapien  |  September 4th, 2007 at 4:16 pm

Well, the updatecompletely froze my ps3 upon download (don’t know if it even completed it as I walked off and returned to a blank screen), then upon restart it installed 50% of the update file (according to the install progress bar). The network reads that my ps3 has been updated so I cannot try to redownload 1.92. Cannot access the PSN but can access the net. No idea what other surprises are in store.

81

Prayer350z  |  September 4th, 2007 at 4:19 pm

well its noticeable it helps the warhawk issues, Thanks sony for that. Is there any rumors / news for what the 2.00 update will have for us?

82

prometheus  |  September 4th, 2007 at 4:19 pm

i Like this update :)

it plays the FF12 ingame movies perfect again

i just restarted playing final fantasy but before the update the ingame movies looked like crap
it couldn’t have come at better time

83

cduran02  |  September 4th, 2007 at 4:24 pm

I’ve had no problems whatsoever with all of the updates. As a firmware developer myself, I have idea how could a firmware update act differently on exactly the same hardware. The only explanation I have would be that there are differences between network adaptors from one group of PS3s to the next. I suppose they source their network components from different places and the firmware looks for and loads the proper driver.

Well, either way, I see many having problems with 1.92, so Im here to shine some of my light and say I have no problems at all. I have a launch PS3 system.

84

cduran02  |  September 4th, 2007 at 4:26 pm

@71

There are plenty of exclusives comming before xmas. Right now we have Warhawk and soon Heavenly sword, the Rachet and Clank, Uncharted, should I go on?….

85

Demon  |  September 4th, 2007 at 4:28 pm

I downloaded it and everything is working perfectly. No network problems or anything for me.

@ 64

oh man, I just bought oblivion online and should be receiving it in 2 or 3 days. Hope they fix that.

86

AK47Beast  |  September 4th, 2007 at 4:29 pm

Is it safe to download firmware 1.92? I’m scared. LOL (I have a launch PS3 too.)

87

sapien  |  September 4th, 2007 at 4:31 pm

15 Mins later and the store is accessable so whatever y’all did worked. Also, I deleted the internet cache as another site suggested so I don’t know if that had anything to do with clearing things up? The freeze up was disconcerting but all seems okay now!

88

gamer1983  |  September 4th, 2007 at 4:48 pm

SONY what’s wrong with the PLAYSTAION NETWORK. Since the update 1.92 i am not able to sign in and when try to play WAR HAWK THE SERVER IS TIMED OUT. I don’t think i am the only one. error 8002AA08 and before that was DNS error and lots of different 800 errors. Could u please let us know

89

Hell-RaizeR  |  September 4th, 2007 at 4:49 pm

I downloaded it with a launch ps3 and have no issues.

90

Shaky Jake  |  September 4th, 2007 at 4:51 pm

@88 Warhawk is looking good - waiting until game/headset bundle comes out but i was hoping for a bioshock/GOW killer before xmas.

GT4 was a blow but i see no real 360 contenders before xmas - sorry to be down about it but when you spend £550+ for a launch PS3 you kinda expect some kick ass games more than 6 months later.

All i can see so far is more than 90 posts about a firmware update and not about games. Now that’s not right….

91

SteveFrench  |  September 4th, 2007 at 4:56 pm

Has any ones elses ps3 just started freezing within the past month and wen i go onto warhwak it freezes after about an hour or two

92

snobrder218  |  September 4th, 2007 at 4:57 pm

@ Loucifer

The PS2 fanbase is huge, why would sony drop one of the best selling consoles in history? Unlike microsoft who just ditches it’s old system, it forces people to buy a new one. End of story.

93

Loucifer  |  September 4th, 2007 at 5:01 pm

@snobrder218

thats fine!…if Sony want to keep its only way to generate $ the PS2…then keep it…but KEEP IT SEPERATE!!!!!!!

I didnt buy my $600 next gen system to play PS2 games for that i’ll plug the damn PS2 in and play it!!

i should have clarified myself…sorry

94

h3ro  |  September 4th, 2007 at 5:02 pm

two words… FIX WARHAWK!

95

Loucifer  |  September 4th, 2007 at 5:05 pm

But lets be realistic here for a second….If the PS2 didnt exist anymore….you think the PS3 would suffer????…HELL NO!!!

if anything it’ll sell more PS3’s….besides with all this bulls**t compatibility they supposedly fix…they can discontinue the PS2 and still release a PS2 game to play on the PS3…i wouldnt buy it cuz its last gen but you get my point

96

Solace  |  September 4th, 2007 at 5:07 pm

@ Loucifer
you know a thread hasn’t officially arrived till Loucifer has started his bashing.
why support PS2 backward compatibility? cuz most people don’t want to have two consoles plugged in. there are still a ton of PS2 games that are fun to play, and since i want things tidy in my entertainment system, don’t want to have any more consoles set up than i have to.
if Sony didn’t support backwards compatibility, you’d have people complaining that they abandoned it like some other “box”…er…console…
besides, you remember the PS2 lineup for the first year? sure, there was SSX, but there was more crap than i care to remember. *shiver* it’ll take a year or two before developers get used to the hardware. this isn’t as simple as programming Pong or PacMan.
if you’re that unhappy, Loucifer, do us all a favour, and sell your PS3 and buy a different console. we could all do without you turning ever blog post into a “whinery”.

97

joel  |  September 4th, 2007 at 5:10 pm

Yes there is going to be xmb features while in game patrick said it already when everybody was asking or it.

My ps3 works better than before :D

98

Kpepe  |  September 4th, 2007 at 5:17 pm

Please fix Warhawk and the ranked servers always being “full”. This problem sucks. Other wise great time to update.

99

frito  |  September 4th, 2007 at 5:21 pm

Thank you Patrick Seybold for your response to the network issues some of us are experiencing with this last firmware update.

I understand this is a very complicated issue, and it may take some time to analyze, isolate, and fix the problems.

I am glad this blog exists for just this type of reason, a direct conduit for feedback about the various issues that can/have/will arise.

From all of us here on the blog, let me say thank you again. Even though some are pessimistic, we all appreciate the firmware updates and all the hard work you have all done!

Solace  |  September 4th, 2007 at 5:22 pm

@Loucifer
not all of us are easily distracted by bright shiny objects and graphics. some of us enjoy good games with solid gameplay, even if they are from older systems (Ratchet series, Jak series, Sly series, MGS series, do i REALLY need to go on?).
if all you care about are the “latest and greatest”, i’d better never see you asking for more downloadable PSone games.
now, if you’ll excuse me, sonny, i have to go and enjoy my Puzzle Fighter, a game obviously only for old fogies like me.
