Updated PS3 and PSP Firmware

+ Posted by Eric Lempel // Director, PlayStation Network Operations

Taking into account customer feedback and some internal testing, we will be making available in the next few days a firmware update for the PS3 (1.93) that fixes the network disconnect issue that some of you have experienced as a result of downloading Firmware 1.92. In addition, we are adding a new firmware update for PSP (3.71) as well, which adds many features that readers of this blog have requested.

The main feature we’ve added with the recent updates for PSP is the ability to set themes on your PSP. Over time we will be providing themes on PlayStation.com, our official PSP site and through PLAYSTATION Store. You can download themes based on some of our popular titles. Be sure to download the files into the following location on your memory stick:

psp memory stick

Once you have downloaded a theme, under settings, go to theme settings, select theme and then custom theme to choose the one you want to display.

You can also now play music while viewing photos or a slideshow. First begin playing a track saved on your memory stick, press the HOME or SELECT button, then navigate to your photos under the Photo icon and begin viewing.

We’ve added several other features including scene search for movies, and you’ll be able to read about them in more depth on the usual update page once it goes live. When it does, I’ll update this post with a direct link.

Update: Here’s the link.

We didn’t suffer any network disconnects but it’s great that there’s a fix for those who experienced it.

This probably indicates that the 2.0 update will probably be released with the launch of home. Can’t wait.

In regards to the PSP update, was there a mix up of any kind? PSspot was added but it’s in Japanese, and after updating the ability to connect to “Network update” now gives you an error.

If this will help Warhawk network errors too, then that’s great. I’m sure all the big stuff, in-game XMB and all that will come in the 2.0 firmware.

new to PSP here. Where do I download FW 3.71? I only see 3.53 in the PSP site, I assume PSP Slim has a newer FW than that.

I’m also really thankful for them fixing that random disconnect thing on PS3. That got old really fast.

There’s a minor feature that I’ve been wanting the PS3 to have as an option and I thought I’d mention it here. I like how you can see a clock with the time and date on the XMB and “Home button screen” on the PSP, and I thought that it would be a little nice to put something similar on the PS3’s XMB and/or “PS button screen”. It would just be a little touch that I think would be nice. Thank you very much.

I’m glad the PSP is still getting interesting updates, but what would be really great for a lot of college students as well as myself is support for WPA Enterprise (WPA TKIP PEAP), since a lot of campuses are using it now. I have a ps3 also, and would love to be able to use remote streaming while at school (not during class, but anime club meetings, eating lunch and so on).

Thanks for the ps3 update as well. Also, a HUGE THANK YOU for posting the information in advance, so we don’t get those stupid rumors like the one about the PS3 supporting flash wallpapers.

Please unlock resolutions in between 480×272, 352×480 and 720×480. We already know the PSP can support those resolutions so why not resolutions in between?

Many podcasts are encoded at 640×352 and such for iPods. Those should play easily on the PSP, unlock them please!

Also, it would really be nice to allow more flexibility with the music playing. Playlist editing, sorting, multiple subdirectory levels, FLAC, OGG and other formats, etc.

Heck, why not make a music playing app that’s full featured like an iPod? That way it won’t take up firmware space. You could just let people download it and choose to launch it on bootup if you held down the left shoulder button or something (allow the key to be configurable)

There’s so many things you guys can add to the PSP to make it even better. If you can’t do it open it up so WE can do it!

Schrade  |  September 11th, 2007 at 10:26 pm

Also, it would be very nice if you could perhaps have a way for us to send ideas, bugs or requests to the firmware developers for the PSP. We need a bit more interaction there.

Please fix the AC3 or Bitstream audio over optical cable with the XMB video player! It works fine with DVD and blue-ray but not with Downloaded trailers or videos!.

This bug has been around forever.. please investigate.

I’d love to see Themes introduced over on the PS3 as well. I’d love to have the whole XMB decked out in a specific game (even the side menu with a special background). Hell, having the icons change with each theme would be nice too.

Eric,

Any word on whether 1.93 fixes the shutdown issue introduced by fw1.92.

Sometimes my PS3 will eventually shutdown after a long delay and 3 beeps.

But other times it just hangs and I have to use the power button and the back of the console to force the box to shutdown. That can’t be good for the OS or HDD.

Maybe I just don’t get it, but why exactly is in-game XMB such a big deal? I don’t think I’ve had the need yet.
Sorry if this is obvious.

@ 45

In-Game XMB would allow you to check your messages without exiting the game and possibly even let you play your own music (the latter not really being important to me).

@Eric Lempel

We need the ability to turn off our SIXAXIS controller while in remote play on our PlayStation 3s’. Apparently, you cannot turn off the controller when you are doing remote play with your PlayStation 3 via PSP. ‘

Hope you take this into consideration.

Thanks! :)

People want In-game XMB so they can send/receive messages without quitting their games, and probably because they think it will bring custom in-game music with it. I’m not too worried about it myself, but it’d be sorta nice.

Good to hear about the PS3 update, been a little hard to sign into the PSN of late.

@nabokovfan87

I HEAR YA!, nothing bites more than having to dig for a password reset email because you have no way to change your password.

Actually I think the firmware updates are great. One thing that I think needs to be looked at though, and you see lots of posts for it in the forums is that (from what I can tell) 20/60GIG owners are having issues controller disconnects. Now it might be interferance or the like but it seems no one can nail it down.

I would think BT would be in a class in to wich wifi etc wouldn’t effect it and I would also think that Sony wouldn’t use something that would eaisly be effected by someones wireless home network or wireless house phone!
