Updated PS3 and PSP Firmware

+ Posted by Eric Lempel // Director, PlayStation Network Operations

Taking into account customer feedback and some internal testing, we will be making available in the next few days a firmware update for the PS3 (1.93) that fixes the network disconnect issue that some of you have experienced as a result of downloading Firmware 1.92. In addition, we are adding a new firmware update for PSP (3.71) as well, which adds many features that readers of this blog have requested.

The main feature we’ve added with the recent updates for PSP is the ability to set themes on your PSP. Over time we will be providing themes on PlayStation.com, our official PSP site and through PLAYSTATION Store. You can download themes based on some of our popular titles. Be sure to download the files into the following location on your memory stick:

psp memory stick

Once you have downloaded a theme, under settings, go to theme settings, select theme and then custom theme to choose the one you want to display.

You can also now play music while viewing photos or a slideshow. First begin playing a track saved on your memory stick, press the HOME or SELECT button, then navigate to your photos under the Photo icon and begin viewing.

We’ve added several other features including scene search for movies, and you’ll be able to read about them in more depth on the usual update page once it goes live. When it does, I’ll update this post with a direct link.

Update: Here’s the link.

This update is OK at best. It’s not they could leave this issue broken. So thanks for doing your job. Also when will we get features that should of been TOP priority like buddy list across all game (I mean send and recieve game invites from with-in ANY game.) Forget the wallpapers stuff pc to PS3 media sharing and all those cool features that people want BUT first and formost I myself am a hard core Playstion gamer since PS1 so give me the invite and join XMB upgrade already. I’m tired of all my XBOX friends telling me how I can’t do this. I am not hating on SONY I am just crying for help on this issues. Here’s waiting for HOME baby. Peace

why is a change log on the patch too much to ask? You had it on the 1.8 and 1.9 patches, but 1.92 and 1.93.. no log.. so now everyone is going to speculate like crazy over what actually changed. Nice.

This is my first time commenting here but I would like to take this opportunity to ask something from you Mr. Eric Lempel. I would love to see an updated flash player implemented on the PS3. Websites like sonystyle.com don’t work properly on the PS3 because of the outdated flash player.

Another issue I would like to see solved would be the slowdown on some animations on Youtube videos for example, those play smoothly on my PC which is less poweful than Cell of course, although I guess this is because of the outdated Flash Player.

Oh and one last issue on the Web Browser would be graphics don’t load properly on websites like engadget.com, we see part of the two Gs loaded someplace else. I know you can easily fix these (note that this also happens on the PSP). Oh yes, it would be very nice to see an Equalizer option on the PSP that would let me manually set my sound (been awaiting this since update 2.0!). Good day and thanks for all the updates and all your hard work, keep it up!

In addition to all the great suggestions provided above, I would also like to see the system become region free for dvd’s. Though I was born and reside in North America, the majority of my dvd’s are PAL. Friends routinely send movies and I would like the option to watch them in the player provided within the PS3. I don’t like the idea of having to purchase another unit, or the same movies again to do this. I am sure it wouldn’t be that big a deal to resolve this issue. I realize that you CAN purchase region free dvd players if needed, which I have done, however; I would still rather use the superior PS3 player.

Surely more than just I would appreciate such a revision.

Thanks for your time, and thanks for the updates that have been provided thus far.
Have a good day!

@ Sony

I would love to see Yellow Dog Lunix on the PSN so everyone can have the freedom to put Lunix on there PS3 if they want. Also if we could access the RSX ram to run Lunix that would be great. 256 is enough we want all 512. Think about Lunix as a PSN download. Thank you.

Sony, What’s going on?! As I type this rant that nobody will ever read anyway, the time is 2:36 AM EST. I can’t sign in on my PS3 because my system requires a firmware update (1.93, I knew about it from Tuesday when he posted the news)… and when I download the update and approach 4%, I get AN ERROR DURING THE DOWNLOAD OPERATION. A CONNECTION TO THE SERVER CANNOT BE ESTABLISHED. (80028E07). Oh yeah, I already considered downloading the update from the Playstation website using my Mac or PC but then I realized that the site HAS NOT UPDATED ITSELF WITH THE NEW FIRMWARE DETAILS YET!!!!! Out of the 10 or 11 firmware updates that I’ve downloaded using my PS3 since December, this is the first time I’ve had a serious server connection problem of this magnitude. Oh well I guess I’ll wait till tomorrow. By then I guess your servers will work and the site will feature the update for alternate download, and after downloading and installing it I may finally sign in.

Yeah, being able to change and access other settings while music is playing would be nice.

Oh, and when will there be more demos to download for the PSP and will there be more PSone games soon and the ability to buy them without a PS3!

Thanks!

sony must let the people use the previous version. what’s up if the power downs… with this ammount of updates, the possibilities are greater, and the solution is to send the system to the repair center, while you cannot play…

Warhawk which i download from Hong Kong psn cannot run on ntsc display… “Hkpsn said its support NTSC”
when its load to menu screen, all i got is black and white screen , v hold keep jumping from bottom to top….even i press the ps icon, screen still black and white
My ps3 is Hongkong ver “NTSC “and HKpsn said Warhawk support NTSC,

i already tested Warhawk on 3 different tv set, only pal system hv no problem “color screen”
, the rest ntsc 3.58 and ntsc 4.43 is all black and white…no matter s video or av multi cable i use…

region 1 is ntsc ,thats what sony said, but sometimes like warhawk and Stranglehold Demo “both usa region1″ are pal when output to sd ntsc monitor……

plz add an option to menu so i can force ntsc games output ntsc signal on sd ntsc tv….

OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast (pal version) still doesn’t work after 1.93. It sucks that the only good Ferrari game can’t be played.

Also, it would be sweet to have some sort of background cache or buffering for PS2 memory card accesses in games so that sometimes long delays with them could be avoided. Especially when some games Autosave very often after any major events.

I have updated to the latest firmware once again. It has fixed nothing.

PS3 1.92

Turning on UPnP on my router still results in me not being able to sign onto the PSN. Turning UPnP off fixes this and I am able to log on.

When going to the LAIR network leader boards it still locks my PS up hard as well. I have to power off the playstation to use it again. No PS button even.

What the heck was this supposed to fix exactly?

When are you going to fix this?

236

Gravatar

hngrytgr  |  September 13th, 2007 at 3:59 am

This is a correction to the previous post

PS3 firmware is 1.93 and all issues still exist.

I have firmware 1.92 ingrained in my frontal lobe now from all the issues I had with it.

Lair Network still locks up hard. UPnP on the router still breaks PSN whats is up?

Eric, I have a PAL PS3 and as a result of 1.93 (or it could be 1.92 I didn’t check), I lost Backwards Compatibility with Hitman Blood Money. Having only now, FIVE games left in my library that don’t work which are as follows:

Hitman Blood Money (SLES 53028)
Jak & Daxter: Precursor Legacy (SCES 50361 ANZ)
Onimusha (SLES 50247)
Onimusha 2 (SLES 50978)
Manhunt (SLES 52023)

I don’t want to appear to be rude, but you guys PLEASE work on BC. Thanks for listening.

Hi there,

Thanks for the update (allthough I didn’t experience any problems in EU).

Here are some requests for future firmware updates:

XMB (in version 2.00):
- I’ve been reading on the net that not all XMB-functions will be available during gameplay. It would be (very!) nice to be able to access (multiple) chat functions during gameplay.

Video:
- At this point the PS3 rarely supports VOB-files for DVD-replay (for instance: through a MediaServer). An íf it plays vob, every vob is played with a different audio/subtitle stream.

These two functions would make me VERY happy. ;-)

Cheerio!

At the risk of sounding like an odious fanboy. I was wondering if it might be possible to request an `Official’ Sony program that could be installed on a computer and would act as THE program to interface with the PS3. Convert videos, make playlists, albums etc (in what program do I make albums on the computer that the PS3 will recognize?).

Just something user friendly and not too complicated. I’ve been having a hell of a time trying to watch video’s I’ve downloaded off my computer on the PS3.

Most of programs out there that act as servers etc…I just can’t seem to get running.

Lots of people ask for Divx. Will this happen? The PS3 instructions say mp4 videos will play on it. I can’t even get my PS3 to even see them.

I’ve set up Windows media player 11 and can see, well, most files from there but I just get lots of `unsupported data’ icons.
Would it be possible for Sony to issue a program that supports data? Or transcodes it on the fly perhaps. (I’ve installed TVersity as well and I can’t get it to work.) If it came from Sony then I would trust that it did work and would `speak’ without any problems to my PS3.
I don’t know what program on my computer I’m mean’t to organise my photos into albums that can be seen on the PS3 either. (where do I find out?)
Ta.

LOL…on a supposed small update?? and all you people think your getting HOME and in-game xmb???…Sony cant even handle such a small update that they have to first patch a patch and then the patch for the patch is apparently screwed!!!!

SONY SUX!!…i used to be a Sony fanboy…not anymore…im tired of being ripped off, lied to and given halfassed updates and delayed games…DONE!!!

A nice selection of updates… multitasking on the PSP has been a long time coming. I’m pretty surprised that the firmware PSP page is still saying that you’re on 3.52.

Also the addition/removal of the “PSP Spot” (in the networking section) was a sad reminder that in the US we’re not getting as much PSP-Love as some of the other places on the planet. Man I hate walking by that Nintendo station at the Atlanta airport every week. Any chance we’ll see a US version of Japan’s Digital TV tuner?

I’d love to see you folks take a good look at what’s going on in the homebrew scene. Not to necessarily give up and make the PSP homebrew friendly, but more to see what apps and improvements are being come up with that you could pass on to those that are trusting Sony to take care of their customers with these updates. Anyone that does a little web search knows what the ’security updates’ really are.

Like many out there… I really would like to see some subfolders on the PS3 XMB. Dumping all one’s similar data in one spot is just poor content management. Come close to filling up your 60ish gig hard drive and you’ll feel the pain of searching through your downloaded movies, demos, and countless CD’s burned to the hard drive. It’s a simple thing that PCs have been doing for over 20 years now. Plus it’s going to be nightmare when I upgrade that drive to a 250 GB 2.5″ SATA.

My firmware update loaded fine with no network issues so I was glad to not be one of the people feeling that pain.

I’ve noticed some controller lockups once in awhile… just for enough seconds to kill a few ships in Super Stardust HD. Also during Folding@home I’ve noticed my system shutting down (it’s sitting out in the open). It seems to start a new work unit when turned back on… Overheating shouldn’t be the trigger… is the firmware update notification stopping the app?

Then there’s the 1080i support. My TV doesn’t have 720p along with many others that I’ve seen posting comments on the blog. It’s a big letdown when so many games we’ve bought, drops down to 480p.

Hope this wasn’t too negative… I’d really like to see some X-Box fanboys eating crow this Christmas.
