Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction Goes Gold, Demo Coming!

Posted by Greg Phillips // Producer, SCEA

Hey everyone, I thought I would hop on and give you a quick update on where we’re at with Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction.

I’m happy to report that we’ve gone gold! The game is finished and will hit a store near you on October 30. As some of you know, this is a week later than the Oct 23rd date stated previously, but the extra wait will be worth it. Insomniac has been hard at work squeezing every last detail, dance move and tool of destruction that we could fit onto a Blu-Ray disc (while leaving some room to fit Captain Qwark’s massive ego). This makes it the largest Ratchet & Clank experience ever.

I am also happy to report that we are wrapping up work on an updated and optimized version of our E3 demo (which is also available at Gamestop if you pre-order RCF) as I type this, and should be available via PSN in North America by October 11. The demo will be of Metropolis, the signature level in the Ratchet & Clank franchise. Well, it was the signature level… before we blew it to bits in this demo:)

Finally, I’m including a quick link to our newest trailer for your viewing pleasure. A hi-res version can be downloaded from the PlayStation Store for free. Enjoy!

This is what I’m talking about! Atleast Insomniac has it’s act together… Maybe someday they’ll get into the hardware biz… I’d buy their systems hand over fist. The only 2 dev’s keeping me onto the Ps3 is Insomniac and Naughtydog… Sony better compensate you guys well. I’ve already paid for my R&C FTOD in full, so no worries on my end!

Al2x  |  September 27th, 2007 at 2:47 pm

Jesus, delay in our world play in yours.

Anyways, I can’t get mad at Insomniac, though I can get mad at Sony.

Been in meetings all day guys, sorry for the delay.

lakaihigh – No. The only returning character outside of R&C is Qwark, and you’ll get his character within the first few minutes. Everything else is new.

Top_Shelf – Based on extensive play testing, we’ve found that the average player can finish a first playthrough in approximatley 14 hours. Challenge Mode, on the other hand, is a whole other ballgame :)

I played the gamestop demo and I paid full price for my pre-order the next day. Great job guys.

RatchetFanatic  |  September 27th, 2007 at 3:40 pm

what about the plumber? and there is a RYNO in this game, right?

58

Spyder-97  |  September 27th, 2007 at 3:48 pm

I like what I’ve seen so far, guys. The game has amazing visuals. It might as well have been a Pixar motion picture. Can’t wait…
Maybe with a 40GB, $400 PS3 and this game, console sales will do a… … 360.

59

jedislayer101  |  September 27th, 2007 at 4:03 pm

Okay, seriously where is the plumber? I mean as little of part as he is the universe still needs its pipes cleaned. Right?

60

Savage  |  September 27th, 2007 at 4:09 pm

From listening to Insomniac’s podcast last week, the frame rate varies depending on how many explosions and characters are on the screen at any given time. They say that it is between 30 and OVER 60 fps and said it did not drop below 30. Considering that films are shown at 25fps and most people don’t complain to the projectionist, I think think it should look fantastic on anyone’s PS3 box.

61

gamesblow  |  September 27th, 2007 at 4:10 pm

The only thing I’m disappointed with is the fact it’s not free roam… I was hoping with the “said” power of the ps3 that we’d be able to blast off from planet to planet and travel to each one on our own accord… Well, the ones you didn’t need special things to get to that is. Anyways, maybe the next game, huh Greg? :)

62

joel  |  September 27th, 2007 at 4:28 pm

@gamesblow

It is free roam.

63

Darkendless  |  September 27th, 2007 at 4:31 pm

14 hours? Damn, that’s weak

64

DrPirate  |  September 27th, 2007 at 4:33 pm

14 Hours, that’s how long the Halo 3 singleplayer lasts on Heroic. No one complained about the length.

65

DrPirate  |  September 27th, 2007 at 4:35 pm

@ Greg Philips: I really want to know if the hooks are in Ratchet and Clank to support trophies in the eventual release of PShome. Also, will there be an online aspects at all in terms of a leaderboard of some sort, will there be any community aspects at all?

Makes me wonder why game journalists never asked you this, those are the answers I think most gamers are curious about.

PsychoEddie  |  September 27th, 2007 at 4:35 pm

Don’t misundertake me. I really really really like this series, which is why I’m sorry to say, that I believe you’re all in for a big disappointment when this hits the streets. I’ve played the demo and thought they really knoodled the canine on the graphics. It’s very overly rendered, in a way that reminds me of ’70s ray tracing and I had a heck of a time with the lack of depth perception from either the overly rendered scenes or lack of color separation; still not sure which. I noticed they also jacked my perspective in two places in the demo (I hates that) and the controls seemed very sluggish. I’ve still preordered the game, although now that I know the Janitor will not be reprising his role in the series, I may be forced to cancel.

No Janitor? Seriously WTF?

67

joel  |  September 27th, 2007 at 4:39 pm

7 hours was halo 3 on normal mode. My friend has the game he told me. He said the multiplayer is the best part, but the campaign wasnt all that.

Heavenly sword was sadly 7 hours as well, why complain about a game thats twice the length?

68

wolverine81  |  September 27th, 2007 at 5:02 pm

Most action/adventure games a less than 10 hours. 14 hours is great! The game looks good and I can’t wait to play the demo!

69

wolverine81  |  September 27th, 2007 at 5:02 pm

meant to say “are less than 10 hours”

70

UntoldDreams  |  September 27th, 2007 at 5:02 pm

This game looks like a Pixar movie. Its almost shocking to see on a nice HD television.

71

Stoffinator  |  September 27th, 2007 at 5:39 pm

Nobody knows how to delay games like Sony. But glad to see this is finally done and not coming out in November with the other fifty thousand titles.

72

Herby  |  September 27th, 2007 at 5:53 pm

Congrats, can’t wait for the demo and the game. Thanks for the update.

73

Cesar  |  September 27th, 2007 at 6:02 pm

The game looks good but ey can we get Resistance 2 ? i just need everything

74

Jeigh  |  September 27th, 2007 at 6:15 pm

All right! A little hurt that it was pushed back but the demo will make up for it. I absolutely love this series and I’ll be getting this at the soonest possible moment.

Actually, I just thought up an idea- you could make a little extra if you had “Special Release Dates”- pay an extra $10-15 to get it a week early. It’s really not a bad idea- rather than having Best Buy employees leaking them out early you could do it yourself. :D

75

Makidian  |  September 27th, 2007 at 6:30 pm

The demo was friggin awesome, Metropolis on the PS3 looks incredible really lives up to it’s name. Can’t wait for the 30th. Go and preorder now to get the demo early, it’s totally worth it.

76

sequoia  |  September 27th, 2007 at 6:44 pm

Thanks for the post Greg; however, a bit disappointed in it going gold now, and won’t be available for another month?!?!? Doesn’t going gold mean, finished, so why the week delay? Sony decide that selling it a week later was better for some reason? Of course this game will sell whenever it comes out, and I’ll buy it day one, but still sucks that it’s a week later, and honestly doesn’t make sense since it already is gold. With the number of delays that numerous games have experienced with the PS3, it’s disappointing that we have to live with yet another one, even though it’s just a week.

77

Vassago  |  September 27th, 2007 at 6:48 pm

i never try Rc before but sure i try the demo and maybe buy it this game look so popular :)

78

DrPirate  |  September 27th, 2007 at 6:50 pm

Sequoia? What the hell, they said a week. Where the hell did you pull out a month.

79

RatchetFanatic  |  September 27th, 2007 at 7:13 pm

@79

i don’t think you know how long it takes to mass produce a game, ship it to different stores, etc.

LordMe  |  September 27th, 2007 at 7:32 pm

sequoia: going ‘gold’ means a game is going to factory for the discs to be pressed and then shipped. While the exact time for a game going ‘gold’ to it reaching stores can vary, the average timeframe is 3 weeks-one month. Hope that clears things up.

gamesblow  |  September 27th, 2007 at 9:03 pm

Joel. I mean free roam in the sense you can litterally take off from 1 planet and traverse to the next and so forth and so on. Not free roam with restrictions on cut scenes. As I said, tho, I’m hopeful future R&C games, better optomised over time, will be able to offer this for us.

84

ParthianArcher  |  September 27th, 2007 at 11:33 pm

Hopefully R&C implements sixaxis in an exciting way.
As it stands, it seems most game developers use sixaxis very minorly because they feel they should at least use it in some way.

85

Agriel  |  September 28th, 2007 at 1:01 am

awesome news can’t wait for R&C, with this and Folklore in Oct. its look like a great month. Btw you guys should really do a blog post about Folklore, any new info would be great.

86

sequoia  |  September 28th, 2007 at 6:45 am

GP:
Thanks for the clarification on the timeline from going gold to hitting the shelves. It’s just that I’ve seen other games hit the shelves much quicker after going gold. However, I’ll chill. :) Just want to play the game as soon as I can, that’s all.

87

StormLord  |  September 28th, 2007 at 8:12 am

yay! this should be fun :)

88

Lp47  |  September 28th, 2007 at 10:20 am

Dam rights, It doesnt matter that the game got delayed one week, at least it didnt get delayed like amonth or something, im sure theirs a good purpose for the delya, also doesnt eye of judgment come out on the 23rd or w/e.
This game is a day one, wait in line purchase, also ill be playing the demo to death. Cant wait, thanx for the update.

89

Random  |  September 28th, 2007 at 10:42 am

I don’t think sony realizes how much potential R&C have. If they started showing the trailers of it, that are on game trailers, on TV, The game would be HUGE…

90

TwinsDad  |  September 28th, 2007 at 11:44 am

So when you say largest, are you just using GigaBytes to hype Blu-ray inclusion in the PS3. Or do you mean largest as in 40+ hours of gameplay making it the longest in R&C history?

Details are important, give me longer games, no more 6 hour graphical eye candy that is Heavenly Sword.

91

Top_Shelf  |  September 28th, 2007 at 11:50 am

TwinsDad: he said above… “based on extensive play testing, we’ve found that the average player can finish a first play through in approximately 14 hours. Challenge Mode, on the other hand, is a whole other ballgame :)”

However, it’s important to note that the number of bits a game takes up is not something that can be directly correlated to length of gameplay for the most part — the exception would probably be a text based adventure game. :D

Besides — a 40+ hour game isn’t necessarily a good thing…

92

Kinglink  |  September 28th, 2007 at 4:10 pm

While I’ve seen many games announce gold 2 weeks before release, I also know of many good games that was “gold” monthes (and one a year) before release. It happens.

Most companies plan for X release date from the moment they enter production, and while it does change it’s usually not up to the team from that point. They tend to go gold when production is finished, and bug fixing is done. If anything, a game that goes gold earlier usually shows a sign of a good production process, as late games tend to be signs that there were bugs that had to be squashed before it went gold.

Kpepe  |  September 28th, 2007 at 5:17 pm

Wow This is going to be a great game. Can’t wait for the demo. I also want RaC on the PSP(imma get the deluxe slim pack) It’s going to rock.

RCF looks awesome and is on our Xmas lists along with Uncharted:DF

95

PSPsGTghOost  |  October 1st, 2007 at 9:11 pm

Gonna pick R&CF up. I would also like to pick Gran Turismo Mobile up. Where the hell is it. Hurry up Polyphony Digital.

96

Demayor  |  October 1st, 2007 at 11:16 pm

I’ve never played a R&C game (other than the betas for online play) but I’m looking forward to the demo. Maybe I’ll like the game. I’ve always hear great thing about them but never pulled the trigger on any of them.

97

Obakasan  |  October 3rd, 2007 at 7:56 pm

i wait to buy the Japanese version of R&CF since the releases are only about 12 days apart. will the games language change to the systems language(my rfom and rr7 both display and play in english even though they are Japanese versions of the game’s)? I live in japan and i was wondering if i need to import it or not.

98

WebScud  |  October 4th, 2007 at 4:51 pm

I just put down $5 bucks at GameStop because I couldn’t wait any longer for the demo. :-D It’s freakin’ awesome. But…

I have huge graphical tearing issues. Is anyone else experiencing that? The PS3 is connected via HDMI to a Sony KDL-46S2010. It’s a 1080i LCD panel, but when the game launches the display automatically changes resolution to 720p. Any thoughts?

99

HappySpaceInvdr  |  October 5th, 2007 at 1:18 am

@WebScud

Frame tearing is a side-effect of disabling V-Sync, which in turn is necessary to get the high frame rate this game runs at.

100

HappySpaceInvdr  |  October 5th, 2007 at 1:24 am

@Greg Phillips

“-60fps and 720p is the preferred hi-res resolution. However, we do support 1080i so everyone with a HDTV can enjoy RCF:ToD in all it’s hi-def glory.”

Err, yes… except that in 1080i, you won’t get the full benefit of that lovely framerate. An interlaced picture takes twice as long (as progressive scan) to draw a full frame so, at 1080i, the resulting picture will look more like 30fps.
