Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune Moves Closer to Gold

UNCH
Hello again! The countdown is on and we are only two weeks away from a Gold Master. We’re down to the point where every minute matters. The QA departments are working around the clock (and around the globe … in Europe and Japan) looking for any last bugs that we need to get cleaned up before we can ship.

Things are hectic around our studio as we’re trying to juggle several tasks at once. Not only are we trying to wrap up production on the game, but we’re also working frantically on helping with the package design and the strategy guide as well. We’ve also scheduled one last impromptu focus test this weekend in our office so that we can check to make sure that any of the last minute tweaks we’ve made to certain aspects of the game haven’t thrown off any of the previous game balance tuning that we’ve done.

Richard Lemarchand was up North in the Bay Area doing a whirlwind media tour on Thursday and Friday of last week. He stopped by the offices of many magazines and websites to show off the latest build of the game and to give some last minute updates before we send off the final disc for review. Be sure to keep an eye out for coverage and gameplay footage online. This preview from IGN is one of the first I’ve spotted.

We’re also preparing to create another trailer to be released in the coming weeks. Taylor Kurosaki, our video editor, is working on selecting the music to use in the next one and planning out the flow and the structure to tease the story just enough without giving too much away.

The final mixes of sound, music and dialog are all being added to our cinematics and it’s really coming together nicely. We’re also getting back all of our localized assets so that we can ship Uncharted simultaneously around the world in 13 languages!

For more information, be sure to visit the official game Web site.

as long as i get to kick some a$$, climb some walls, and do some exploration in the demo. then i’m fine. :)

  • gamesblow whats going on? you sound, well happy. Good for you man, see it ain’t ALL doom and gloom in the land of PS3

  • Evan, you have been addressing most of the questions and concerns I also had…Thank you for that.

I just have one more for you to help me with … if possible.

    I own a 60gb launch model here in U.S.
I am planning to buy the Dual Shock 3 via play-asia.com on 11/11/07 (the day is released in Japan).

    http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-zl-49-en-70-2act.html

Since your game supports rumble, will the Japanese DS3 work on North American PS3 models while playing Uncharted ?

  • One question I’m dying to get answered : Are the ingame cinematics done in engine, or is it done by “cheating” where the ingame cinematics are prerendered, but with the game engine.

  • THANKS EVAN

  • Thanks for answering all our questions Evan. Can’t wait to play the game.

My only question is: On the one in-game video where he’s running through the ruins, and there are laser pointers buzzing around over his head, why do the enemies look like the lasers are attached to their wrists? Aren’t they supposed to be sniper rifles? Are they wrist-rifles? Kinda super-villain-ish don’t you think?

Either way I can’t wait to get my hands on this game. I know several people buying PS3’s for it. You guys can officially dub Uncharted a “PS3 System-Seller” now.

  • Oh no’s :(

“Occasionally, when the framerate drops, we will swap the frame buffers mid-render creating a tear. We do this, so that the framerate doesn’t drop instantly to 20 FPS which is what we’d have to do to prevent the tearing. Instead we wait until the tear is going to happen near the top of the screen or the very bottom so you aren’t as likely to notice”

Damn… bad news. If the tearing is anything like what was shown recently on the new level then it definitely will be noticable and really distracting.

For me personally will put a huge downer on the overall polish/presentation. Very sad indeed how this gen has struggled even at 30fps (and I have absolutely no problem with 30fps for this sort of game it just annoys me that visuals seem to take priority over decent framerates).

  • AWESOME!!

might get this one, I’m dutch by the way and it’s great to see PS3 games getting optional dutch voices.
HS has it and now Uncharted, it’s great to see the huge capacity of Blu ray being used right.

Thank you Naughty Dog and Sony.

  • Hellblazer, Gears of War “suffered” from this exact same thing… It didn’t effect that game at all. This isn’t a big deal, trust me. He said himself you won’t even notice it… It’s like my vision. I have weired **** floating around in it… I don’t notice it unless I go looking for it, though. Don’t look for the screen tears and you’ll probably be just fine. (by the way, my nuro opthamologist said i’m not going blind… So I’ll be able to play and enjoy this awesome kick balls game! :)

  • I try not to get excited for PS3 games (because sometimes they end up like Lair), but it’s hard to not get excited for Drake’s Fortune. Looks great!

  • Lair was amazing… What are oyu talking about? The only thing I hate about Lair was the stupid ass THX intro you couldn’t skip. Talk about annoying.

  • Lair was amazing… What are oyu talking about? The only thing I hate about Lair was the stupid ass THX intro you couldn’t skip. Talk about annoying.

LOL try playing Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max on PSP–there is like 10 screen things like that you have to go through (and not skip) and it is PORTABLE game!!!

Can’t wait for Uncharted–this is a good time of year hehe with Uncharted, Folklore (9 on IGN hehe!), Ratchet and Haze–I think I have another one reserved too but can’t remember it right now–either way I have never had so many games I want come out at the same time!

  • Oh.. I see that TTP’s question was address at comment 111! Yay.. fixed. :D

  • The gameplay footage of uncharted looks incredible. I cannot wait to get my hands on a copy of the game. A demo would be nice.

Also i would like to thank Sony for coming to their senses and deciding to make the 80GB box the elite type box and the 40GB the regular box. I always thought it was strange that there was no version of the PS3 that was more catered to the mass true gamer. PS3 20GB versions lacked beauty and no wireless. Also card readers are not needed, two usb are quite fine. Now everything seems to be in place along with the asome games coming out. My friends can now buy the PS3. Thank you Sony.

  • This is the game I’m mostly looking forward to this year. There aren’t enough of these action/adventure game and a reason why I own a PS3.

Let’s hope is delivers because it looks SWEET!!!

  • Thank for the awesome game…please give us the demo as soon as possible.

  • If you are still answering questions, Evan Wells, I have one question I want to ask. Naughty Dog said not too long ago that footprints will be left by Drake whenever he walks, and plants will move due to him walking by them or on them. Has that been implemented in the game, or will that be implemented before it goes gold?

Just wondering, because in some videos that I have seen, when characters walk by foliage, the plants would go right through them, instead of just brushing against the characters like real foliage does in real life. I have also seen some games that leave behind footprints, and it just makes the game seem more real, instead of just a character walking without effecting his environment.

  • Hi Evan,

I am a fan of your kennel and the perfectionists there ;), so this question might seem odd, but I think you guys won’t get too pissed at me for asking :D.

I am talking about how Drake’s feet (and presumably all characters’ feet) line up with sloped terrain or basically how they do not seem (at least in the E3 footage they did not) to follow the slope of the ground Drake walks on when he is like going up and down from a “hill”.

    \
    -\ __
    –\
    —\

( the __ should represent the bottom of Drake’s foot… although the slope is a bit steeper than what I wanted to draw… I am not good at ASCII art :(… I hope it does express the point ina clear way)
I have not been able to spot this issue in the latest trailers I have seen also because there were not really big chances for that to show up, but I just waned to know if that issue had been found and fixed yet :).

  • Hi Evan !

Can you tell us how many polys/sec.( overall ) does the game do with all effects on ?

    Thanks.

  • Blue, that’s basically irrelevant information. I mean, it might be good to know to toss around in flame wars with xbot box boys, but in all honesty… It could run on 2 polygons a second and if it looked that good… would it matter? Not to me.

  • gamesblow

That was just a curiosity. Sorry.

  • @gamesblow
I know that THX intro is frikin annoying!
But hey the surround sound IS awesome for Lair, so the least we can do is listen to the intro… time and time again. 0_o

  • Well, I mean… if you wanna know that’s fine. I was just hoping he’d answer some questions that actually pertained to the game we play, rather than the technical side of things is all. I don’t wanna sound stand offish or anything… it’s just there are a few questions I’d like to see him answer about gameplay, as listed above. I do apologize.

  • HEY, i want BBC to announce Uncharted and then show gameplay of Tomb Raider, wait has this happened already with other games?

  • I want a PS3.

  • @MrDaBucket
Ask your store for one and leave $500 bucks on the counter. lol

  • knavex = waste of space here

Great loooking game, I’m hoping gameplay rocks also.

  • Can’t wait for this game.

I heard rumors about the rumble configurations are already loaded onto the disc already is this true?

If it I wish we could get our hands on the dual shock 3 sooner than later.

  • @Evan
So when you say cheats, what type of cheats are we talking about?

  • (Adding to 177)
Good thing it’s unlockable, because (cheat code) cheats really ruins a game. It’s just tempting. But making the cheats unlockable gives the game replayability. Codes just waist the developers hard work at creating a challenging game.

  • Game looks awesome. Will definately buy a PS3 for it. Cant wait.

  • hopefully this will do better than Lair, Heavenly Sword, and Folklore.

  • Wow, sounds pretty crazy over there! I’m looking forward to this. It sounds like you’ve got everything nice and tight.

RatchetFanatic you’re making an ass out of yourself. Folklore just released and has got some impressive reviews and Heavenly Sword was amazing.

  • Sounds great,i will be buying this. What are the controls?

  • GO NAUGHTY DOG!!!! GO UNCHARTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • november right? well, i’ll be importing my white japanese dualshock 3 and i’ll be happy to enjoy this game with rumble!

  • I hope you guys still looking at this comments, because I forgot to mention that it should be nice if you guys keep this cover as the official one for the US: http://g-ec2.images-amazon.com/images/I/61YE0U3vfML._SS400_.jpg

A lot of people from all over the internet have said that this is one of the best covers out there, so I should recommend you guys to keep it.

  • if i were any more excited for this game, i’d be camping out in from of game stop already.

  • I really dislike this cover. I think it suggests more of a “man chase” than a “treasure chase”. I would like much better to have a cover a la Indiana Jones.

  • I just watched the behind the scenes video (part 1). I hope you guys realise that when you talked about the story being about Sir Francis Drake, you then showed a picture of Samuel Pepys (it even says his name under the picture). I hope that wasn’t the picture you were intending to use in the game?

I was also a bit confused about how you said you wanted to be “opposite” from games that just show lots of brown and gray in their levels, because from the video, it seems like there’s a lot of brown and gray in your game too. Are there other levels that have no brown, or gray in them at all?

Finally, I didn’t understand what you meant about other games never having done water. Lots of games have included realistic water, such as Tomb Raider, Super Mario Sunshine, Wave Race (on the Gamecube), Bioshock & Half Life 2. I personally thought the water in the video looked a little artificial – I’ve visited the jungles of the Yucatan and although the water is clean, it is never completely transparent as you show it. Maybe this is fixed in the final game though?

  • Awesome, now release the PSP camera in the US please.

  • @190 Are you crazy? The cover art is fantastic! Some of the best I’ve seen in a very long time.

  • @193
    agreed… sick cover

  • ????Uncharted will be sold €70???I thought games edited by SCE would be all sold a €60 as the Microsoft ones!!!What happened ???I’m not agree with that kind of politics …It’s like Eye of judgement, sold $70 in the US and €100 in EU!!!
Pfff SCE is disapointing me,they really don’t have a word…

  • Hi Evan !

For the next Uncharted, I would love to see the game having the same kind of settings as Far Cry or Crysis. For example: beaches, open jungle, caverns, etc.

Sad to know that after finishing the first Uncharted, we will have to wait at least 2 years to play the other.

But anyway, I will enjoy plentifully your masterpiece.

    Thank you so much.

  • Noway… I hope the next one takes place in the arctic. Ice vaverns, underground mine shafts… snowy mountain tops. That’d be hot! Although, I’d like some more diversity in there aswell. Just a suggestion. ha!

  • Hi again Evan !

Is it somewhat possible to have the presskit package of Uncharted in terms of limited edition ? It would be very very cool.

How much space does the game fill on the bluray disc ?

Does the game use in some ways the HDD ?

    Thanks.
