PS3 SpiderMan3-set (by You)

With all the speculation and buzz out there regarding the 40GB PS3 announcements in Japan and Europe, I am very excited to confirm that the new $399 PS3 model will be coming to North America on November 2nd, making that particular configuration available worldwide. In North America, the 40GB PS3 comes bundled with the block-buster movie Spider-Man 3 on Blu-ray. Also, effective today, we’ve lowered the purchase price of our 80GB model by $100 to $499.

This move has been part of our longer term business strategy for PS3 since early on and we believe this lower priced model, combined with our broad line-up of content will appeal to a great many of you who want a lower entry price without sacrificing any of the core components of PS3. With today’s news, we’re strengthening our position approaching this holiday season and beyond with the intent to provide you with a choice and an excellent entry point into HD games and movies.

Adding to the appeal of the new retail pricing is the great PS3 lineup that will help further drive our momentum this holiday, including Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, THE EYE OF JUDGMENT, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Heavenly Sword, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Assassin’s Creed, Haze and Rock Band. And that’s just the beginning: This holiday lineup will be followed in 2008 by highly-anticipated Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Grand Theft Auto IV, Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet and, of course, PlayStation Home.

Our goal this holiday season is to make PS3 even more affordable and to offer you greater choice to suit your gaming and entertainment needs. Again, I want to thank all of you for your continued support throughout this past year and I look forward to the months and years ahead.

  • I’ll wait until another model is phased out and a new (hopefully higher) GB version is brought out.

  • Its coo you guys are lowering the price of the console $100.00 dollars and getting a cheaper one, but Final Fantasy if coming out why not make a bunble with FF13? for the 40GB PS3

  • You forgot to mention Devil May Cry 4. And what the hell happened to Sing Star PS3??

An update to Lair is over-due by now, whats the deal?? Are we ever going to see Lair with better controls and better frame rates?? … I really want an answer for this.

@ 128, you bring up great points .. thx

i think the 80 gb i not much better then the 60 because think it doesnt have a wirelles add on like the 80

  • playstation3boy60gb

    haze!

  • This awful year Sony had is a prove that you can’t fool many customers into buying crap for a lot of money just because it has a famous name… What a big mistake the PS3 was so far! Now, for $399 and finally with some games to play it isn’t anymore, unfortunate are those like me who were fooled before and bought a dust gatherer for $599…

  • good news,hope it sells.

  • Yay. Now maybe some of my friends can finally save up some money and get a PS3…

  • Can anybody tell me wich is the region code DVD for the ps3?

  • maybe if sony could sell harddrives and add a firmware to upgrade the 20 40 or even the 60 gig to catch up to the 80 gig that would be reasonable for people who already own the system…think about it sony that would make alot of sense rembember sony you guys can put it out there your companyhas the brain power to do so

  • Well, we just had a price drop for the remaining 60GB at Best Buy for $449.99 (for this week), so I’m happy to say that I’m now a PS3 owner.

  • Oh I forgot to mention that the price drop was in Canada. Not sure if they did the same in the States. They are also offering the 80GB with 2 games (Lair and Motor) for $499.99. But I didn’t really like either game and I rather have the PS2 bc, even if it is 20GB lower.
As for the people complaining about paying too much when it was launch, I don’t feel sorry for you. There is always a price to pay when you have to have the newest technology. Everyone knows prices are bound to drop eventually.

  • A price drop is always good, and I hope it increases sales. Yet, I have to wonder why backwards compatibility had to be droped couldn’t the 20gb unit have been rebundled and rereleased at this cheaper price.

Backwards Compatibility has always been one of the strengths of the Playstations for me, and what has made me a loyal customer for many years. So while I love many of the new games coming out, a cheaper system that can not play some of the old favorite PS1 and PS2 titles in my collection, just doesn’t seem worth it. Seems like a poor decision that may win Sony a few new casual gamers, but will end up losing many of the old hardcore gamers and loyal customers.

  • I want to know one thng since I bought my PS3 less than 60 days ago, Bestbuy will not give me a $100. Refund since it’s past 30 days. I feel Sony should repay that to me or anyone else. If they Value the customers or fans, Than they should show curtisy and giving back to the fans. I mean look at the IPhone how much they charges at first than they gave back, WHAT IS SONY GOING TO DO. If everybody agrees with me everybody should complain. either give the $100 back or give us two free games.

  • I still want my money

  • AGREE WITH SOFTTARGET GIVE US SOME SONY CREDIT OR A COUPLE FREE GAMES

  • One thing that is currently hurting the PS3 is a lack of advertising. All my friends with 360’s think that the games are just for their crapbox but are surprised to see that I have it for my PS3. Also, you guys NEED to get with bungie and make an exclusive. Not Halo 4 since Microsoft owns all the names and such, but a good shooter of some sort. That would finish the deal

  • six more days to go oh man i cant wait to get my hands on my new toy and im going to buy a game (duhh) im just glad sony dropped the price so i could have one ever since it came out i wanted one but it was too high of a price better yet a status to even have one but now regular people could get one…its good to see that sony has a good fan base because it sony didnt the ps3 would fail thank god for that sony and by the way i love the new ideas you (sony) have for your new system its unbelievable the games that are coming out…keep those game coming the compitition has no chance believe that. @+

  • I saw Walmart doing a deal bundle (check your local walmarts) with A BlurRay Movie, Controller and Lair or Heavenly Sword for the same $499.99. Oh, this is for the better 60GB PS3. Get it while they last this is attempt to clean house for 40GB & 80GB PS3s.

  • yea a price drop was going to happen and everyone knew it…its been a year and the price did drop who knew thatit was going to happen so sudden but sony did drop it maybe if people waited but who wants to wait for the newest thing its a status thing though i got it first so pay the price of it dont complain you brought it…. probably you wanted to be the first on your block to have it and show off but now people wanna complain about the price drop its not fair to complain you got it already and just be happy you have it… when it came out i didnt have the money then to buy a $600.00 system but once i seen it was a $100.00 cheaper than the 60gig model i turned my couch upside down to get it even though i paid $630.00 for mine i got a deal with a warranty included im satified i paid that kind of money for something everyone wants and there is no complaining there.

  • @ KING99951: I agree I bought mine about a week after it came out cost me 701.00 exactly after tax and insurance. I felt raped and still do but that is not what I wanted to state. I payed alot because I wanted it first in my block. Also I kinda got the money so I aint really bothered. I think IMO anyways, right now is the primetime to jump on a 60GB system while you still can. I will complain about the price I paid to my real life friends and not to online strangers.. lmao

  • Well im a very early adopter, so this doesnt concern me. But i do hope lots, and lots of ppl buy a ps3 and hit me up on warhawk!!!!!!!!!

  • For me i think the backward computability is not a major concern, especially if someone already have got a PS2 at home. Most analysis all they do, seems like just pure criticisms about PS 3. Most of them might not even a gamers at all. My Wii is sitting on the shelf collecting dust since the Zelda……

  • five more days to go people i cant wait i feel like a ps3 crackhead i have pains in my stomach UPS better hurry up i cant take it no more i need my ps3 fix…..five more days to go

  • yo jorgiex i understand where you are coming from but be happy that sony did the people a favor that couldnt get one when it came out last year think about it sony wants there fans to be happy and i mean die hard fans i know you are one and so am i just be happy they dropped the price for people like me or people who have to turn their couch upside down to get that money for something we all want….no disrespect to you or anyone who got theirs the first or second week when it (ps3) came out but EVERYONE knew sony was going to drop the price and they did im happy the next man is happy we are all happy that it is dropped….by the way it you have warhawk beware buddy im coming to shake heads and take titles from people.

  • So by dropping PS2 emulation does that mean that PS1 emulation is gone also and the ability to play PS1 games downloaded from the store is gone also? What about the upscaling for PS1 & 2 games? If Sony really want people to buy the system at an affordable price release the high end version of the 60/80 gig with no hard drive and let me pick the size I want. Then again there will be a redesign next year when PS3 gets the PSX make over like PS2 got to include DVR capabilities. Trying sticking with a price or a unit for more than 6 months because at this rate everyone will be waiting to get the cheapest the offering and by then it will be to late and MGS4 will be on Xbox and lets hope they don’t lose GoW.

  • This will be my Christmas present, as I happen to work at a specific electronics retailer and already have customers waiting for November 2nd to roll around!

  • [As the email form seems to consider the following invalid and refuses to send, I suppose that posting my remarks here in the comments section will suffice. Apologies for the off-topic nature, and while I may be asking a bit much, an email response would be appreciated.]

Greetings to those at Sony, my name is Kyle Mistry, and I am contacting you in regards to some questions I have with organization of PSP photos, videos, and music tracks.

I know that on the PS3, pressing the Triangle button allows you to open a menu in which you can organize items according to name, date, and so on. With the PSP, this menu option is absent, and items seem to organize themselves according to some other criteria (possibly date added, or last modified?)

I suppose what I’m asking is, will the ability to organize media items be added into later firmware versions?

In regards to the PSP theme creation software: will it ever make it to the Mac OS? I love the way you’ve extended out to users and allowed them to further customize their systems, but many Mac users are unfortunately being left out. I would personally enjoy creating themes for the PSP, and have friends who share my opinion.

As for my final question, it regards the appearance of titles/thumbnails of media items. When scrolling through a list of ~50 songs, the track number will appear to the left, followed by the track name after apporoximately 2 seconds or so. While it may not seem like a large inconvenience, it is an annoyance when searching through to find one specific song. If I scroll until the song is off the screen, and then back, I must go through the same 2-second waiting process. I was wondering if this is a caching issue, and if it will be improved upon anytime soon.

In any case, I thank you for taking the time to read to my email. No doubt you get countless ones like it daily, and the attention is appreciated.

    Best regards,
    Kyle Mistry

  • Hey King99951 your such a kiss ass to the company. You bought yours a year ago thats then so what. I’m talking within less then 3 months I think Sony should give something back. So you can go dig underneath your dirty couch all you want. But for me or other people we rather spend our money on games we could of gotten. I’m not saying I’m not happy with the system at all I love it. Hell I think Xbox360 sucks. Now a year from now when the price drops i won’t complain. Because thats a year I mean com’on. So you keep digging all you want and I’ll keep complaining all I want. And when I do get my $100. dollars back I will inform everyone except to go get there money. Sony did the poeple a favor What a joke! KISS ASS!! oh by the way in comment 172 it’s bought not brought.

  • Hello everybody.
Im from Colombia, so I dont speek English very well.
I just have two questions. Who here can answer me please?
    those prices include taxes?
How much do they (40GB, 80GB) cost with taxes?
A friend is going to buy a PS3 in Miami to bring this to me, so I need to know How much money I need to give him.

    Thanks.

  • I am glad for the 80GB drop to $500.00

I only need to get tax accounted for and I have it but my question is where are they?

    I look almost every day and I haven’t seen a 80GB anywhere.

Also when is UR3 (Unreal Tournament 3) coming out, even though I still don’t have a PS3 I will soon and I am looking forward to having that game.

Also as a side not to other bloggers, how can you not care about backward compatibilities! Its an outrage, just saying (“/ (^-^) \”) .

  • This would be great news……..if the 40GB had BC. I know a lot of people that have been waiting for the 40GB price point. The 20GB wasnt an option cause of no Wi-fi, but now the 40GB is for sure not an option cause of no BC. Its great that the 80GB is 499 now, but that is still too much for most of them. The comments from the Sony camp regarding BC completly pissed me off. That is there best feature as a company, and having the PS2 library at there disposal is huge. I know that my PS2 is on its last leg, I already have 4 in car that are staying there as they serve as a DVD player as well, but I would not spend another 100 bucks on one for my house when mine does die. So at that point I would be unable to play my 60+ game collection for PS2…….way to take care of your loyal fans. I for one would never buy a 360 as its a POS at any price, so I guess people like me are just not important to the Sony camp. After all they said themselves that losing BC didnt cut the price much, so they did it out of spite. They just wanted people to be forced into buying PS3 games. Games that most PS3 owners would buy anyway.

  • PLEASE HELP ME!

  • @ marcoaha – Florida State sales tax is 6%, so the total cost to you will be:

    40GB – $422.94
    or
    80GB – $528.94

  • Please!!! BT keyboard/Mouse support!

  • As long as you leave one of the systems with full PS1 and PS2 BC, it’ll be fine. If you completely get rid of BC, you’re asking for problems. I still think it’s a stupid idea to remove PS2 BC when it shouldn’t really cost you much more to add it to the 40g system, and gives and extra incentive to those who want it, but still want a cheaper system.

  • @196
    Yes, keep backwards compatibility.
Everytime a new PS3 comes out, another feature gets cut.

  • I love the that Sony is going after the XBOX 360 Arcade. It’s going to be one hot XMAS. Being Supervisor of the Game department at Best Buy has its perks. Like playing both sides :)

  • Now the the PS3 can compete. Should be a great console battle.

  • @Rubinos

At that price (and features) they are not going after the 360 arcade version they are going after the Premium version.

Makes me curious for BB, if your not trained for what models compete.
