Coming Soon Exclusively to the PS3 – Rat Race

Posted by Greg Easley // Co-founder and President, Super-Ego Games

ronLab2

Hey people! My name is Greg Easley and I’m one of the founders of Super-Ego Games, a development studio with a different take on making games. We’re finally announcing our new title and labor of love, Rat Race. You’ll read more about this in the game press soon, but I wanted to tell you about it here first.

Rat Race is a PS3-exclusive comedy/adventure game – yeah, another one of those! – that will be available as individual episodes on PSN beginning this winter. Rat Race has been written and voiced by some really funny people with credits on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, My Name Is Earl, Saturday Night Live, South Park, Flight of the Conchords, Sex and the City, Ugly Betty, Comedy Central, and so on. Our team includes some of the best stand-up comics in New York City, where half of our studio is based (the other half is in San Francisco).

Rat Race is set in an office – an extremely dysfunctional one. The company is called BiggCo, and the people who work there make the Enron guys look like Nobel Prize laureates. Your job is simply to make it through the day as bombs go off all around you. As the clock ticks toward quitting time, you’ll encounter a rogues gallery including: Joy Chung, an impossible, and impossibly hot, PR exec; Chip Bratsby III, a pompous jerk whose career focus is getting you fired; and Dr. Ron Durfman, a research scientist who may or may not be intimate with his lab monkey.

Our goal is to give you the feeling of “playing” inside an episode of your favorite TV show. Sometimes we describe Rat Race as an interactive sitcom, but that doesn’t do it justice. There’s more to the experience than funny dialogue. Along the way you’ll sneak, sprint, solve puzzles, eavesdrop, steal, and even “neutralize” that lab monkey.

Look for more info about Rat Race in the coming weeks.

So, is your target audience adult gamers? Just wondering what kind of humor I can expect…

52

Kinglink  |  October 17th, 2007 at 7:35 am

Sounds weak. Basically “Sam and max did this so we’ll try too with out a license”. It could be big, but I have a feeling it’ll come out weaker than expected. At least it’s something new.

Just promise me we’ll get a demo or some way to make up our minds about this game other than uninteractive videos.

53

Jeigh  |  October 17th, 2007 at 8:10 am

Yeah, Kinglink, they’re looking to do you favors after that comment.

Comedy/Adventure sounds like my kind of game! I especially love the fact that it’s coming from a “dysfunctional studio.” Dysfunctional=Amusing. :D And having top comics involved is going to seal the deal.

I especially love the fact that it’s an exclusive episodic series. How frequent will the episodes be?

54

Jeigh  |  October 17th, 2007 at 8:13 am

Heh, must have misread- it’s a “dysfunctional office”. Eh, it’s all good.

55

leetfoo  |  October 17th, 2007 at 8:26 am

Looks interesting. Please support 1080 output.

56

frito  |  October 17th, 2007 at 8:47 am

kinda off topic-

speaking of adventure games and monkiesanybody remember the “escape form monkey island ” games?

that was great when it cam out on PS2!

57

RandomEarthling  |  October 17th, 2007 at 9:07 am

Sounds interesting and I like the visual style. Get the price right though or none of that will even matter.

58

kanyn  |  October 17th, 2007 at 9:43 am

Sounds interesting and unique. I haven’t played a game like this since the old Lucas Arts adventure games.

59

Violater  |  October 17th, 2007 at 10:10 am

Sounds like a day at my office,
please say I can play pranks on my boss and co workers.

60

Elsa43  |  October 17th, 2007 at 10:16 am

Sounds fun! I really like this idea… though cost and playing time would be a factor. I’d actually rather see fairly short play time and lower cost rather than the opposite – this seems the type of game I would turn to as a break when I’m having a bad run of luck with Warhawk! :)

61

cell989  |  October 17th, 2007 at 10:31 am

nice, sounds like a very original game. I really appreciate the diversity in games on the PSN.

megatron  |  October 17th, 2007 at 11:25 am

Looks fun! At first I thought it was a remake of the classic Radar Rat Race. Maybe they can easter egg that??? I’ll be keeping my eye on this one.

PS They should do a cameo by ricky gervais

64

F7  |  October 17th, 2007 at 11:29 am

This looks hilarious. Having left Corporate America last year after working in large corporations (Volvo, Travelers, St. Barnabas Healthcare System, etc.) due to office politics and the general ineptitude of the average corporate slave, Rat Race should be a fun experience to not only validate my reasons for leaving corporate America but to possibly remind me of some of the more humorous moments through the years.

dodomasta3000  |  October 17th, 2007 at 11:30 am

this is great…destroy microsoft kill them sony..show them how fun games are done….and not overhyped crap like halo3.

66

deadxbabiesxinc  |  October 17th, 2007 at 12:38 pm

I think that alot of people would get a kick out of this just because alot of us have experienced working at a office environment :-P

offtopic tho, whats with Capcom’s lame HUGE PS3 announcement? A lousy port?!? we get a lousy port?!? I hope thats not all they have for PS3…

67

GAME-HERO  |  October 17th, 2007 at 12:47 pm

THIS SOUNDS SO AWESOME, I AM SO LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS GAME! YEA…GREAT JOB WITH THIS ONE GUYS…THANK YOU!!!

68

zapruder  |  October 17th, 2007 at 12:51 pm

looks interesting!but i hope there will me more ‘adult’ content in the future. by that i dont meen just porn but if a spongebob game is possible i’m sure a “the office” kind of game for a more adult audience is more than welcome and Ratrace should be a succes.. right now it seem adult means blood and gore but i sure hope Sony is gonna go another direction than just that narrow view of entertainment. seeing projects like ‘heavy rain’ i’m optimistic but id rather see those game’s before an other MGS. and why not allow 18+ xxx stuff i’m sure it will be a huge succes;-) come on Sony its a ‘computer’ not console.

69

brentos  |  October 17th, 2007 at 1:36 pm

I know I shouldn’t even ask, but any idea what will be on tomorrow’s update? Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune demo would make my day…it would probably make my month.

70

crmgs  |  October 17th, 2007 at 1:56 pm

some people just come here to say” GREAT WORK!!!! NICEEE JOBBB SONY IS THE BEST”..ps3 nothing but a warhawk..all of the other things just sux..sorry

71

Loucifer  |  October 17th, 2007 at 2:13 pm

@crmgs

thats cuz everyones brainwashed into thinking Sony is god…Sony aint s*** if you ask me…until there is a game worth spending $ on thats a better version then the 360 i’m not wasting my money…i said it b4 and im saying it again

72

Loucifer  |  October 17th, 2007 at 2:18 pm

when Sony can prove to me they have the better system and better gaming library then maybe i’ll spend a little money but they cant even do that…720 resolution sux…PSN suxs…firmware sux…no rumble sux…once a week PSN updates suck…hmmmm…Lair sux…Heavenly Sword sux…Warhawk servers suck…come to think about it the only thing it doesnt suck for is playing that copy of 300 on blueray….Boooo

73

TheManGone  |  October 17th, 2007 at 2:34 pm

loucifer is just mad that he has to play halo3 all day and all night. knowing halo3 looks disgusting graphically and gameplay is just boring and dull. its ok loucifer no one in here will get mad at you. we all know you microsoft has you brainwashed.

74

Solace  |  October 17th, 2007 at 2:38 pm

@Loucifer
GRAW2 on PS3 is better than on 360.
Vegas on PS3 came with all of the extras 360 had.
Lost Planet PS3 will have all of the DLC and extras the 360 version had.
Oblivion had the free DLC packs that 360 made you pay for.
The Darkness came with more bonus features than the 360 version.
…and those are just a few of the 3rd party examples.

when’s the last time you saw original gaming (flOw, Everyday Shooter, RatRace, EyeofJudgement) on the other consoles?
when’s the last time you saw demos on the Wii or free online gaming on the 360?

firmware updates that come once a month or so, not once every 6 months.
Uncharted. Folklore. Warhawk. BluRay player, Ratchet. if you’re not excited about games like Ratchet&Clank after the demo, i really don’t know what to tell you.

720 resolution sucks if that’s the max your TV goes up to. Sounds like if you’re so rich like you always brag about being, you’d have a better TV.

75

orbio234  |  October 17th, 2007 at 3:06 pm

go figure,,,this blog has become a debating class,,,interesting …my vote is for ps3…my disagrees are for people who want 360 to be ps3,,,thats a downhill argument…no go

76

TheManGone  |  October 17th, 2007 at 3:09 pm

solace loucifer doesnt get it, he is stupified by the halo3 and the [DELETED] microsoft gave them. the hype of halo3 and it didnt deliver. its sad that he has to be put through so much pain. hey loucifer i understand your pain look at his name “loucifer” he’s mad about something and it has to be the Red Rind Of Death. you’re companion by faith right. lol

77

saunderswan  |  October 17th, 2007 at 4:26 pm

capcom announced Lost Planet for PS3 hope this aint another poor port i been gaggin to play that
SONY make sure this dont suck like ALL the rest PLZ

78

BloodShed  |  October 17th, 2007 at 6:47 pm

I’m already sold strictly because I want to support the genre. Maybe we’ll see a return of adventure games?

Everything released by “The Adventure Company” sucks compared to the companies from the golden age of adventure gaming: Sierra, Lucas Arts, etc. The only decent adventure games I’ve played in a long time were Dreamfall and Fahrenheit (Indigo Prophecy).

79

KnaveX  |  October 17th, 2007 at 7:44 pm

Cool, now all we need are playstation network cards. And I’ll buy it!

80

Lp47  |  October 17th, 2007 at 8:20 pm

@ 14, sony does have credit cards, their called The sony car, or something like that. Anyways, i cant complain about more PSN games. Lets hope to see a big PSN game that will beat out anything ever downloaded on a console. Maybe a fps or some totally new dl’able game.

81

Jedah  |  October 17th, 2007 at 8:40 pm

@ 89, the sony cards aren’t out yet even though the system is going to turn one year out in the market.

It totally sucks because PSN has great content but those of us who can’t input their credit card information without getting that lame “your credit card information is not valid”, or those who don’t own one, or simply don’t want to use theit credit card for this kind of things are left out.

Sony is losing a lot of money on this in my book without those cards out, they would make good holiday gift.

Get those damn pre-paid cards out already.

RoAcH2285  |  October 17th, 2007 at 8:55 pm

@90

LOST PLANET is coming to the PS3. Yeaaaaaaaaa i knew better them to go buy a 360

84

turstkill  |  October 17th, 2007 at 9:43 pm

hey sony people….

got an idea for the ps3’s XMB:

an in-game schedule that uses the notification application. an individual could schedule how long they want to play a given game, and would have the choice of being warned five, ten, or fifteen minutes before their time expires. they could even have a reminder message, like, “do the dishes” or something. parent can set the ps3 to shut down after a certain amount of play time, and it wouldn’t turn on again untill they authorize it with a code, or the next day. I know parents would love that!

85

KBG29  |  October 18th, 2007 at 1:09 am

I am very happy to see this coming.

I believe that their is a huge place for episodic content in the future. This game looks to be heading in the right direction. For episodic content to work you can not be looking to push the envolope with every episode tech wise. The best way to go about it is to get a decent engine running, that can be used easly and effecently. Then you got to just start pumping out high quality content, and the people will love it.

This is somthing that is going to be very good for gaming and I wish everyone the best of luck on this project. I am 100% behind Episodic content, and look forward to seeing more in the future.

Thanks

Laughing_Gas  |  October 18th, 2007 at 3:47 am

Can I say how terrible, unfunny, and unoriginal this game looks without getting deleted?

87

Loucifer  |  October 18th, 2007 at 7:47 am

@Solace

my TV is 1080p dude…its the gay games that dont support that resolution…and you need to lay off the hardcore narcotics if you think that HORRIBLE port a.k.a. GRAW2 AND RB6 are better on the PS3…and lets not be using Lost Planet as a point to your arguement since thats just a concept with thoughts of release sometime in 2008…and NO im not happy with R&C…its gay and its for kids and as for the others…”flOw, Everyday Shooter, RatRace, EyeofJudgement”…they’re ALL gay…if thats your type of game then more power to you…at least YOUR happy…Warhawk is just plagued with too many issues…as long as it took to come out and for AN ONLINE ONLY game one would think it would have been released perfect….but i should have known better since the orginal was absolutely terrible…

now you did mention something that i will tentatively agree with you about and thats Uncharted…although my only complaint is the T rating it got since im so not a teenager…thats like me watching a cheezy Disney movie…but the game looks quite appealing and i’ve even reserved my copy even though part of me feels a letdown in the making and the other half is dying for Sony to pull off ONE just ONE game worth advertising for…since no title to date has earned some advertising since they all suck!!

88

Loucifer  |  October 18th, 2007 at 7:50 am

oh and i’ve already played and beaten LostPlanet so why would i buy it on PS3…its a Platinum Hit for the box…glad to see people getting excited for something so old

90

orbio234  |  October 18th, 2007 at 8:29 am

91

orbio234  |  October 18th, 2007 at 9:04 am

92

95

97

CitizenInsane27  |  October 18th, 2007 at 11:36 am

Anyone gonna say anything about what’s in todays PSN update? anything? magic?

98

Top_Shelf  |  October 18th, 2007 at 12:50 pm

I’m surprised there’s no update on here about the 40gb non-backward compatible ps3 that is confirmed for the US now too.

99

Top_Shelf  |  October 18th, 2007 at 12:52 pm

or the new lower 80gb system price…

100

Zoibie  |  October 18th, 2007 at 12:52 pm

I don’t know what to make of this. Some of the trailers are surprisingly funny but i’ll have to see this one myself to decide whether to buy it or not.

One thing’s for certain, it isn’t going to be pleasing any reviewers… this style of game never does!
