Personality Profile: Everyday Shooter Creator, Jonathan Mak

Posted by Jonathan Mak // Creator, Everyday Shooter

Hi everyone, I’m Jonathan Mak, creator of Everyday Shooter, a game I know you’ve heard a little about recently from Rusty Buchert. I thought I’d pop by to give everyone a purview into the life of the one-man developing crew that is Quesy Games (me). Here are few photos to illustrate.

1
My PS3 is sitting on the box that it came in.

2
I look forward to playing Heavenly Sword on my 12″ TV.

3
Most developers have mountains of candy and soda. I have seaweed.

4
Yesterday I bought 5lbs of hash browns.

5
As I’m writing this, I’m talking to a game developer who’s friends throw pig’s blood at each other.

6
I can no longer stay awake for more than eight hours at a time.

7
The Everyday Shooter code has no 4s or 5s execpt in the combination of 54, or in very rare instances 0.5, because 5 and 4 are very unlucky numbers.

8
There are eight levels in Everyday Shooter and eight points in this post because eight is a very lucky number.

This is what I love about PSN. One man developer is able to release a game to the mass audience that rivals multi-million dollar hits in gameplay (and surpasses most). Job well done John and Sony!

I just registered on this blog for the sole reason of being able to post about this game.

I read people’s comments here FIRST, then before I bought the game, I went and looked at the reviews on IGN and Gamespot. I very VERY nearly didn’t buy the game just because of those reviews, they rated it low, and it didn’t sound nearly as good from their reviews…

I ended up deciding to buy the game to support Jon Mak. I figured the ten bucks would support him and then if the game was at least moderately enjoyable, I would get my money’s worth.

I don’t know if I just suck at shooters, or what, but I find Everyday Shooter to be somewhat hard. At first, I was quite fearful it would be entirely tooo hard. By the time I tried level 2, I was pretty much of the opinion that I wouldn’t ever see the end of the game…

The upgrade system is what saved it for me, personally. I was able to buy some more lives, and low and behold, I could then get MUCH further. Eventually I got to level 3, and was having just a hell of a time with it. Then I was able to unlock that level for single play, and mastered it well enough that I thought I would be able to get past it in normal play.

It took me a few hours to get past levels 1 and 2 with enough lives left to get past level 3. Once I did, unbelievably I got past level 4 that same game, first try! Level 5 is frigging amazingly cool. I really love it.

So I just had to pop in here and post and say that for -*ME*-, this is a really fun game. It is very challenging and refreshingly different in its style than anything I have ever played before.

Three thumbs up. :) (yeah, I had to borrow a thumb to give it a rating that high!)

Hey Jon,

One question for you.

How’d you get a hold of the dev tools to make the game?
