PLAYSTATION Eye: Your Questions Answered

Posted by Kristin Neirinckx // Marketing Manager, PSP

Hello everyone! The PLAYSTATION Eye is beginning to hit store shelves. Be sure to check it out and download your free EyeCreate software on the PLAYSTATION Network.

Sarah Stocker did a great job of summarizing all of the great technology and features included in the PLAYSTATION Eye last week. I’m here to help answer some of the great questions you’ve been asking. Here we go:

Does the PLAYSTATION Eye come with any software?

The PLAYSTATION Eye comes with a FREE EyeCreate editing software download on the PLAYSTATION Network. The EyeCreate editing software allows you to save photos, video and audio clips to your PS3 hard disk drive and apply eye-catching visual effects to your images. Different capture modes like time-lapse and slow motion open up a world of possibilities to be explored further in EyeCreate’s editing suite, where you can turn your media into professional looking movies.

What other games are available for the PLAYSTATION Eye?

THE EYE OF JUDGMENT is a visually stunning experience that adds a third dimension to the trading card genre. Specially coded cards transform into amazing spells and creatures before you through the power of the PLAYSTATION Eye.

There will also be a variety of games and interactive screen savers available on the PLAYSTATION Network throughout the next few months. Be on the lookout for titles such as Aquatopia, Operation: Creature Feature and Trials of Topoq.

Can I use the PLAYSTATION Eye with my PC?

PLAYSTATION Eye will only work with the PLAYSTATION 3 system

Can you chat with PC webcams using the PLAYSTATION Eye through the PS3?

Since PLAYSTATION Network is a closed system, you can only chat among PLAYSTATION 3 owners and cannot contact someone on a PC with the PLAYSTATION Eye on the PLAYSTATION 3 system

To answer questions like these, we have put together a web page dedicated to the PLAYSTATION Eye, complete with a FAQ section. You can check it out here.

I will be checking back to answer any questions I may have missed. Look forward to hearing from you!

In all the previews and specs of the Playstation Eye on the web, the camera can do 60 or 120 frames per second, ok, and that you could record slow motion.

Go figure with the ability to capture at 60 or 120 fps, would create some very smooth slow motion, I got the Playstation Eye, downloaded the free create software and NO SLOW MOTION capability at all!
Why? What happened?

leetfoo  |  October 25th, 2007 at 4:06 pm

@55- Glad to see you keep up the patronizing- Name one game that can be displayed in 1080i but not 1080p, and i’ll take your statement as truth. Otherwise, everything I have seen, experienced, and read states that the ps3 creates a 1920*1080 frame and then passes it out to the display processsing where it is then either output in a interlaced or progressive format. Maybe I’m wrong, but so far there is no game that supports 1080i and not 1080p for exactly this reason.

53

Solace  |  October 25th, 2007 at 4:31 pm

@leetfoo
I’m not going to go through a list of all the games, but the producer for Uncharted stated that it will be 1080i, for one.
For the last time:
- 1080p images can be downgraded to 1080i.
- 1080i images cannot be upscaled to true 1080p. If it did / does, all that is going on is that it is doubling the H-scan resolution output which is NOT the same thing as true 1080p output.
What you’re saying is that it would be like taking an SD image, and by just “filling in the inbetween lines”, you create an HD image. This is NOT true HD.

54

leetfoo  |  October 25th, 2007 at 4:45 pm

You won’t go through the list because it doesn’t exist. Even with it not being out, I can assure you that if you put uncharted in your system, and disable 720p and 1080i but enable 1080p, it will display 1080p. The uncharted guys said actually said exactly that.

1080i= a 1920*1080 image displayed interlaced as two 1920*540 images so quickly that you can’t tell.
1080p= a 1920*1080 image displayed as 1920*1080.

Note that they are both still 1920*1080 images, just output in different ways. The internal processing the PS3 does is the same either way.

None of this actually applies to Uncharted, which is a 720p game that ND actually took the time to use the software scaling sdk on to enable ALL resolutions… as Sony should do with all thier games but doesn’t.

55

Solace  |  October 25th, 2007 at 4:53 pm

The pixel ratio has nothing to do with the “i” versus “p”.
For 1080i, it refreshes every other line every other frame.
For 1080p, it refreshes every line every since frame.
It’s that simple. I’m done trying to reason with you when it’s clear you have no basic comprehension of the subject matter to even discuss this.

56

Solace  |  October 25th, 2007 at 4:53 pm

^^ oops – I meant “pixel dimensions”, not “pixel ratio” (which is something totally different).

57

leetfoo  |  October 25th, 2007 at 4:57 pm

@61- You said: The pixel ratio has nothing to do with the “i” versus “p”.

Yes, that’s what I’m saying exactly! The pixel ratio is what the processing power of the ps3 works on, not way they are displayed.
You are getting too hung up on the idea that the devs are programming the output methods- they aren’t, they are just creating the frame of pixels, which the ps3 then outputs in a progressive or interlaced format.

58

leetfoo  |  October 25th, 2007 at 4:58 pm

lol, I meant pixel dimensions too… haha

I plan on picking up my copy of Eye of Judgement and the PS Eye tomorrow. And thanks to you Sony for giving us the EyeCreate software for free, I’m gonna have a blast with the Eye

60

Zinacef  |  October 25th, 2007 at 5:45 pm

I thought it was supposed to be available on 10/23/07, but I’m not seeing it stores, and it’s 10/25/07. What gives?!

61

SevenFactors  |  October 25th, 2007 at 6:01 pm

The Eye as well s the Eye of Judgment game are looking just marvelous. Now, I have been hearing good things about everything that is and will be PlayStaton Eye, but I don’t hear any news regarding that wonderful game that first was announced at E3 06 -EyeSpy- Whatever happened to this game? Did you guys pulled the plug on it or are you guys working on it in the dark? I would love for this game to become a reality.

Can someone please fill me in on this?

Thanks

GhostInTheVoid  |  October 25th, 2007 at 7:38 pm

Wow EoJ is addictive as hell. Just logged 6 hours on it. What a great game, cant wait to see how this game develops in two years. my only complaints are that it could have used a little more weight in the bottome of the stand and it took me a little while to learn where things are best placed for the camera to pick them up..light helps huge here. If you like tcg’s grab this one.

63

linebeginstoblur  |  October 25th, 2007 at 8:59 pm

Can anyone please tell me an approximation of the cord length given? I assume it is a wired USB connection, but I would very much like to know how long the cord is. Like I said, an approximation is fine. Thank you.

@67,
You mena Eyedentify?

67

wiggsj  |  October 26th, 2007 at 5:43 am

SONY- I thought there were anti-cheats in place??

Even with a cheap $60 Canon printer, you can print your own cards for use in Eye of Judgment

http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2007/10/25/whoops-print-your-own-eye-of-judgment-cards/#comments

What a shock another problem with another game!! so disappointing!

68

LordOfRuin  |  October 26th, 2007 at 5:47 am

It won’t be long before someone comes up with a PC driver for the new eyetoy. I have one for the old eyetoy, and indeed use it occationally. It’s certainly much better than the standard fare of webcam, so the new one will be barkingly good. However, I very quickly realised, there’s more things to do on the playstation with it than the PC.

Am I able to buy the new Eyetoy seperately? I don’t like the look of that Eye of Jugement game.

69

frito  |  October 26th, 2007 at 8:44 am

i think everyone here loves our PS3’s, so let’s stop arguing and realize what we’ve got with this new Eye-

It has the potential to revolutionize gaming- a whole new way of interacting with games, I think this is great- i just hope Sony realizes they need to NOT LET THIS FLOUNDER WITH NO ADDITIONAL NEW CONTENT! MAKE NEW GAMES ALL AROUND THE EYE! HAVE MOVIE MAKING CONTESTS! LET US USE THE EYE TO COMPLETELY NAVIGATE THE XMB!!! GIVE SUS REMOTE FUNCTIONALITY WITH OUR PSP’s AND THE EYE!

And to those complaining of not being able to use the new Eye with your Pc’s- either wait about a week or two until someone makes drivers to enable Pc’s to read them, or just be one of the hundreds of already existing Webcam’s out there!

I do understand the closed system of the PSN… but I hope you can use your PSP as a home security checker by seeing what’s going on through your eye at any time, anywhere by accessing the remote functionality ..that would be sweet!

@76- yeah, I’m pretty sure you can buy it separately!

and @ everyone arguing about the resolutions, -

1080P is the best. yes. of course. I too think all our games by now should be in 1080P. Sony DID promise it. Time to deliver! Whip those developers!

the only reasons why all our games aren’t supporting 1080P globally yet is that

1) Sony unfortunately delayed the dev kits too long to developers, so-

2) the developers therefore have had not enough time with the architecture yet to be able to pull the 1080P 60 frames a second out of the Cell…

I too am disappointed that the Cell has not been harnessed yet fully, even by Sony itself, but I look at all the amazing things Stanford , various other Universities and research firms, and even DARPA are doing with the Cell, and i know that the PS3 is going to be just fine…

I JUST WISH IT WOULD HAPPEN SOONER THAN LATER!!!!

*whew* i feel better.

so let’s all go copy some cards at Staples and kick some butt! lol!

70

frito  |  October 26th, 2007 at 8:49 am

i was J/k about the cards BTW!

i think cheaters are gonna hurt the game now..

If the packs are not readily available, leet haxxors will have to turn to the HQ scans on teh interwebz.

LAME!

I hope Sony can somehow fix the new cards being printed to not be able to be copied and work!

71

SevenFactors  |  October 26th, 2007 at 9:07 am

@74

KnaveX, thanks for correcting me. For some reason I keep calling it EyeSpy, I have no idea why.

Anyways, yes, Eyedentity is the game that I was referring to. The idea and concept of it seem to be very fun, cool and packed up with lots potential.

I just would like to know if the becoming a reality of Eyedentity is a Yay or a Nay?

72

reson8er  |  October 26th, 2007 at 10:03 am

Why the shortages of Eye of Judgment? :( Ive been trying since 10/24/07 to find it, to no avail.

I suspect the retailers saw the price and the “niche” market a game of this type normally has and simply did not order enough (or in some cases any) to meet demand.

73

LegendsEnd  |  October 26th, 2007 at 10:11 am

Every game review website seems to indicate that Eye of Judgment cards can be simply printed from any color printer and used perfectly with the PSEye. Are Sony’s claims of having a special protective measure against this a lie? I don’t see how Sony expects to sell much of the booster packs like this.

74

SpyroLuver88  |  October 26th, 2007 at 11:12 am

@ 76 LordofRuin

Yes, you can purchase the Eye seperately. I saw them @ GameStop for $39.99. However EOJ is $69.99 and the Eye is included, if you can locate one. Hope this helps!

Thank you to everyone for your comments and questions. Greg Lutton will be by to answer your software related questions (i.e. EyeCreate file formats, etc).

Many of you asked about other software and the PLAYSTATION Eye.
We are fully behind the camera and there is development for new games in the works.

Here are the answers to a couple of the questions:

@brentos
Can I use another webcam and chat with six people, or do I have to use the PS eye?
- You can use your own webcam to chat with up to 6 people

@linebeginstoblur
Can anyone please tell me an approximation of the cord length given?
- The cord length is 6 ft.

I hope this helps to answer questions. Be on the lookout for Greg for more answers. Talk to you soon!

frito  |  October 26th, 2007 at 6:23 pm

Hi Kristin, thanks for your answers!

Unfortunately, I am seeing gaming sites explode recently with reports of being able to easily copy the cards or even simply draw the shapes to get the fake cards to be acknowledged by the Eye…

Is this true or not?

I think this game could be doomed internet competition-wise if any loser could simply cheat because they can save $$$ by simply copying them!

Please let us know if there is a way you can ban users who cheat or even somehow issue an update that fixes the problems?

It’s too bad this is happening..maybe the reports are faked- can we please get a response to this?

cheers!

I have a question about the cards for Eye Of Judgment…

I think I figured out the difference between the common, uncommon, rare and ultra rare icons on the cards, but can someone confirm this for me?

Black = common
White = uncommon
Silver = rare
Gold = ultra rare

Also, when can we expect the current set of cards (110) to be increased? Or will it ever be? Maybe via PSN update or expansion? I have to say that this game is so addictive and fun that I had to go out and buy more cards. It would be so nice to know that there will be more to collect in the future.

84

Cheysan  |  October 27th, 2007 at 7:17 pm

This thing doesn’t work…. or more likely the problem is with EyeCreate. When testing the Eye in the XMB, it displayed video in what can only be described as visually broken when running with a 60Hz flicker reduction. 50Hz looks fine, but EyeCreate for some reason refuses to aknowledge your XMB Camera settings and runs it in 60Hz. It is completely unusable, and I wouldn’t bring it up, but I am not the only one having this problem if you check the forums. Just thought I’d make somebody aware of this issue.

85

zefie  |  October 28th, 2007 at 3:39 am

I’m sure Sony has plans to prevent this “scan and print” stuff in the future. Think about it. What is the one thing Sony can put on a piece of paper that you can’t (cheaply). Holographics.

86

Dexter48  |  October 28th, 2007 at 1:24 pm

@Sony

It seems like it’s a good webcam but…
Not being able to use it on a PC or being forced to use it with my PS3 contacts is a shame.

Why is that ? It sucks because I only have a few people in my contacts (2 actually) and none of them has the Webcam that can only be used through the PSN, pretty limited heh!

Providing Windows drivers and software might be useful to you, it might increase sales of the Playstaion Eye, after all there are drivers to make the PS3 controller work on Windows.

Amaaaazing game! I am hooked. The technology works and the game play is fun! Please let us know when and where the booster packs will be released … in Canada specifically.

Suggestions … sure would be nice if we could make private rooms or at least have the game prevent others from entering your created room after you have sent an invite to a friend. Also I’m sure there is some grand design involved however I would like to be able to play ranked games with my friends without having to rely on a chance meeting. It appears that I cannot invite anyone to a ranked match and worse when someone enters who I do not wish to play I can’t exit without it costing me honor!

None the less kudos on a solid game and I hope you will extend it based on our suggestions.

Cheers,

EOJ is alot of fun. I picked it up on launch day and have been playing with friends and my wife loves it. We have played matches for the last 4 days. Thanks for this fun and different experance on the PS3.

This is utterly quite impressive, The Eye of Judgement played using the Eye is like a dream come true for all card-based game fans. Having said that, I have a few questions that might not be possible for PlayStation US to answer since this is probably in the works or spoken of in Japan, and I don’t know if word has spread. Straight to the point, I would to know whether Sony PlayStation will anytime soon have information about Konami and the Eye? A very popular card-based game in Japan and was for a very short time in North America, though is still lurking around is the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise, of course, based on the anime. I wouldn’t think I would be the only one to think of this since many PlayStation and YGO fans would do too, though, will Sony PlayStation have a collaboration with Konami and bring a Yu-Gi-Oh (or Yu-Gi-Oh! GX) game, on and with the same gameplay principles as how “The Eye of Judgement is played”? If this is achieved, for us YGO fans, would be delighted to see literally “anime (or atleast this particular one) come to life.” And again, online play should always exist for this.

Thank You

In the meantime, I have an old Eyetoy. Erm, can I use this for anything other than a microphone on top of my telly? Tried the EyeCreate with it, nope! Ah bugger.
