Firmware 2.00 Video Demonstration

+ Posted by Eric Lempel // Director, PlayStation Network Operations

Hello again. To better illustrate new features in the forthcoming firmware update, we’ve created a quick video demonstration of some of the new features (shot using the PLAYSTATION Eye). Inside, you’ll see a quick run through of how Themes, the Information Board, Remote Start, and custom photo and music playlists work.

As soon as the firmware goes active, our System Software Update page will refresh to reflect all of the features found in firmware v2.00.

Thanks for demonstrating the new features on video.

I loved the themes feature on PSP, and had been hoping they’d bring this feature to PS3–now it looks like they’re doing that. I’m also glad that they’re introducing playlist management, and Remote Start should be a great boon for playing media content remotely using the PSP.

Is this everything I could possibly want out of the PS3 user interface? Nope. Should Sony stop here? Heck no. I’d love to have in-game messaging and in-game custom soundtracks, too. Hopefully we’ll get those features sooner than later. There’s a lot of other features on my personal wish list, too.

In another year, there will surely be other features people will clamor for. That’s the great thing about having a system with upgradable firmware–it can evolve and change with people’s needs. Just because a desirable feature isn’t in there yet doesn’t mean it never will be, or that they’re not working on it already.

For now, I’m grateful for what they’ve given us so far. They’ve done a good job at adding new abilities at a steady pace, and I’m sure this progress will continue.

this is a bullsh!t update!

all people wanted was to be able to listen to their own music in game and talk to their friends without exiting.

to all those that say we’re complaining about getting free stuff, thats bullsh!t too. we (I) paid for this. it was promised by sony years before the ps3 even came out. a year later, they should have their sh!t together. i got rid of my 360 a while ago but with the recent price drops i might switch back to the dark side. you guy are f*cking up!

VERY DISAPPOINTING

@clover09 - Well I understand this does not bother you as much as it does me or others, but take a look around the past few months at least. What is the feature most all ask for? In game XMB, if they can not do it tell us why. Just give us a real answer not a bunch of PR crap. Can I live without it yes, but we just want a valid reason of why I can not message my friends without quitting a game. I am just saying the 360 is killing us and it piss me off that there are easy things to do now to help with all the, game delays and bad ports and loss of exclusives to make PS3 a better experience. We have a great machine just listen to the majority, and start helping the PS3 gain some ground.

I could not agree more with post number 90! You got it down man!

BTW good job on the update Sony! Finaly we will have a place to get all our PlayStation News from without sifting through site after site, and then argueing about what is offical or not. We can just turn on the Network info room and look for our selfs!

a few qestions:

1. How often will the Network Info feature be updated? Also what kind of news can we expect to see? New firmware announcements? game info? Events?

2. Will we be able to use this new feature with Remote play?

3. Any word on the in game XMB for those rabbid fanboys who keep whineing about it?

4. What kind of themes can we look forward too? I hope there is a PS3 theme we can get that has a PS3 system with a montage of games/movies, as well as some Sony icons to go along with it.

Hehe, every blog posted here is greeted with even more negative responses. I’d hate to work at PlayStation.com right now…

… seriously though Sony, many of us are dissapointed because we are the early adopters. Remember, the guys who actually made the console sell in the first couple days after launch, even though the rest of the world was like “WTF? I’ll wait for MGS!”

Basically…

1. Clock, like on PSP

2. XMB Manual Sorting for Games

3. In-game XMB
(Mini version, has no System Settings etc. here’s)

4. In-game access to Music, Pictures etc.
(HOME, LittleBP etc. will defenately use this, so get it ready!)

5. Support more Video formats.
(AVI, MWV, DIVX etc.)

6. Pimp out the Browser y’all. You gotta make it faster and whatnot.

7. etc.

Firmware 2.00’s features are GREAT, no kidding. I actually kept pressing the Update button as it got closer to midnight (UK) just to see if it was up already.

Adding the above mentioned features will get some positive comments here for once!

That Information Board is actually looking like an attractive little feature!~ If we want to know what was in an store update without loading up the store that’ll be a keen little tool.

Some cool themes I’d recommend: Ratchet & Clank! :D (Self explanatory)

PlayStation Greats (Have various character cameos from some of the greatest PlayStation titles- think Kratos, Nariko, Nathan Hale and so on)

Classic Games (Showcase games like Tetris and Pac-Man.)

Developer Themes (Like Square Enix theme, Sega theme, Atari theme- whatever works.)

I’m sure you guys have already got a ton of ideas, but I hope these help!~

I know I’ll be using those playlists!~ :D

Thanks for your hard work!~

You trust YouTube over Sony? Man your asking for false info there man. Almost 90% of what you see on that video service is fake. Even that open a car with a soft ball trick was staged and was proven false.

@112

AGH! Freakin hilarious, man! Good stuff. Here’s an extra in case you fail to read, JeremyPrice11’s post, Sony- http://youtube.com/watch?v=VszZ_63Ap8I
Just be straight out and tell us- it’s not coming because you can’t do it. Don’t pull me by the sausage.

I dunno why sony can’t be straight and say ‘We are working on XMB now, it wont be ready for a while, but we are working on it, and it will be out sometime soon’
They have to wait till the day before to go ‘SUPRISE, WE HAVE DONE NOTHING YOU ASKED FOR’ *Confetti*

@gunwing - this was featured on g4tv, ign,gamespot,1up,gameradar, just to name a few. I only got the link from you tube beause it is easier to fiind there. This is real it was at the E3 before the launch of the ps3. So again was is it now?

twiskck  |  November 7th, 2007 at 6:57 pm

idk about everybody else but im diggin the update.
As for future ideas because the ”next generation” seems to be feeling and touching etc. such as with the iphone and wii and sixaxis controller, wouldnt it be neat to flip through the xmb/photos/music etc. with a flick of the controller?
but deffinitly have the option to turn it on/off because of course like most things alot of people wont like it hope you think about it!

I enjoy these small updates for now. Yes we should expect more but I bet Sony has something big up their sleeve for when HOME is released!

I made thread the other week about a news ticker sort of thing that the network should implement for PS news and here we are! btw… psn id is dcy4pres and forum name is dcy4war

However I hope Sony would put in-game XMB, music player as priority for the next update.

So many people *^$*^ing…In-game XMB would take a good chunk of ram. If you guys want it, Sony will have to tell devs to use even less RAM than they already can…which of course will lower the quality of games. Plus, why the heck do you want to go into the XMB while your playing a game anyway? If its just for sending messages(which is the only viable reason I can think of), I am sure Sony will be adding in-game messeging eventually.
I think a lot of you just want in-game XMB cause that “other console” has a similar feature.

Bender Rodriguez  |  November 7th, 2007 at 6:59 pm

The more I see the more the theme’s thing is the only thing that appeals to me. Even then it’s only slightly. I think this was only disappointing for a lot of people, because it was way too long since something big and a lot of people expected something big.

I’m sorry, but ffs please add in-game xmb. I want to access my friends list during a game by pressing the playstation button and send a friend a message, or reply to a message, this is very important for communication among friends on the buddy list. I don’t even care about custom soundtrack, please make in-game xmb access a priority, please and thank you.

I wonder if they have plans to implementing an RSS reader/manager to the information board.

I’d like that, it could scroll news from PSN and that… “outside” place, everybody’s always talking about.

I’m happy with the update. It’s a small taste of what’s coming in future updates.

Wow… You guys complain to much. Now, I normally don’t point out the idiotic comments out there, but this is just insane. You people complain if there’s no update. Wahh. You complain if there’s an update. Wahh. Be lucky they’re even TELLING us whats available. They could have easily just said firmware 2.0 and leave you hanging about when it comes out and what it includes.

Eric, thank you to you and your team for keeping us in the loop. Keep up the good work!

@ultima

ITS NOT ABOUT THE RAM!!!! You idiot!! Out of the 512mb (256 for gaming only, then 256 for console) 64mb is on the XMB. Now whats left? 192mb, all they need to do is use another 64mb(I odnt give a F about the browser slowing down) and Buala we have in game xmb.

Please, is it possible to have a moderator available when new information happens in this blog. It is very distracting and unnecessary to have so many spam and disrespectful people contributing negativity.

The PS3 will never be complete until the system allows those of us with 1080i-only televisions to play our 720-only games in HD. SONY…resolve the problem. Until you do, I cannot recommend the Playstation 3 to any friends.
