Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune Demo Back on the World Map

+ Posted by Christophe Balestra // Co-President Naughty Dog

Christophe Balestra, here, and I’m Co-President at Naughty Dog. I wanted to give a final update on the Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune demo situation.

We’re really sorry about what happened and didn’t anticipate this at all. We just didn’t know people from other territories could connect to the US PLAYSTATION Network Store and download demos … now we do! We’ve been too busy working on the game to wrap our head’s around the infrastructure of the PSN.

We absolutely did not plan the demo to be region locked. As soon as we figured out the problem existed, Sam Thompson called me and I jumped into my car, drove to the office and fixed it right away. It’s an honest mistake and we didn’t try to prevent anybody from enjoying the Uncharted demo. I feel even more sorry because most of the people who experienced the problem are in Europe and I’m European myself.

So again, we’re really sorry about what happened and it wasn’t done on purpose. The good news is it’s now fixed and a new demo of Uncharted has been posted to the US PLAYSTATION Network Store so the entire world can enjoy it.

Thanks to Sam for taking the heat yesterday and for letting us know about the issue.

Yea…played the demo as well now. Beautiful visuals and great gameplay. I just thought the animation was maybe not as smooth as you tried to sell it to us, but still very good. I just couldn’t help, but smile when that guy got wet after placing him under the waterfall :-) I think you’ve got a winner here.

just downloading now for the 3rd time, 1st time didnt know what was wrong so i downloaded it again and it was still the same then read on the forums about the demo lock was a bit mad but iam used to it being in the uk…so hopefully it will work now , i still think its a plot to generate more hype and then more sales of this game and as for not knowing you can connect to other psn stores thats proberly true if you are in the usa beacuse they get everything first so why would you need to

Good to know that it wasn’t done on purpose and thanks for resolving the issue. And on behalf of all Europeans sorry for the hysterical remarks of yesterday.

SONY: You need a global PSN store the european ones are sad empty affairs. We want to give you money. Let us do so.

Re-downloading as I type. Well, well, well. Is this a turn up for the books? No, not really. Naughty Dog shouldn’t have been underestimated. They and Insomaic are the shining light for other developers out there about how to please gamers on the PS3. I didn’t approve of the backlash that they recieved yesterday, but it’s pleasing to see a lot of the people coming back with apologises and now they’ve turned nto ND fans. Can’t wait to play the demo and then look forward to when the final game hits the shelves.

Well done Naughty Dog and SCEA for sorting this out. Much appreciated.

This is the best game ive played sofar on the ps3. Textures are jawdropping and oozes of moisture and wetness, which even makes your clothes wet as you move into the water. Atmosphere is constantly changing with trees and plants moving in the wind. The idea of mixing the action parts up with platforming is really fun and jumping/climbing has never felt this fluid ever. Kudos to Naughty Dog for pushing the limits and making the best game on the platform! Can’t wait to play the whole game and thanks again for making this available for PAL.

Wow. Not only do you guys give us info on this blog. You are actually listening on our complains and problems. The region problem is one thing, but in such a short time to actually fix the problem and come back to us.
I have always respected Naughty Dog since Jak & Dexter when they proved that it was possible to eliminate loading times without a hard drive and still make the best platformer on any console at that time.

Now the show that they are a company that listen to us in Europe and deliver a fix in such short time.

Thanks a lot Naughty Dog and Sony for letting them upgrade their Demo on PSN before a thursday ;)

After playing the demo so many times (lost count) here’s my rundown of Nathan Drake.
And let me tell you, every new play through I catch something new about the guy through observations made during gameplay.

Nate is an everyman in the movie sense of the word and not in the everyday sense.
Very much in tune with Rocky the under dog;the bum who went the distance.
Or John McClane, a happy go lucky city cop who just happens to find himself in dire suituations one after another.
These are supposedly ordinary people doing extraordinery acts while being in extraordinary situations.

And Nate has very simmilar character traits.
Nate is not a very graceful guy;he lacks finesse. Every posture of his spells buffoon.
He’s very clumsy. It’s never one swift motion. He’s always doing something odd with his body.
It’s always slightly awkward and all his action are hardly athletic.
His gymnastics are kind of clown like.
He looks like he’s walking on a tight rope when he wobbles across a giant log.
He also jumps like a maniac with his hands and legs flailing in the air.
If he does fall to his death, either from the log or a high place, it’s more of laugh than a shock really.

His combat skills are even worse, it’s down right laughable as a matter of fact.
When he sees the enemy he sprints into action running in the opposite direction with his hands covering his head and his body slouched over while looking for a place to hide.
And he says very odd things during the most inappropriate times.
Openly telling us that he’s truely frustated by what’s going on and he’s probably gonna crap his pants.
His aim is unsteady, you have to constantly steady your aim after every recoil.
It gets worse with the AK-47.
His hand to hand combat skills are less than steller, he looks like a drunk with his fists flying in air, doing wild erratic random motions just hoping to hit whatever comes his way. It’s not really a combo move, just a few randoms punches and kicks in succession.

He lacks the acrobatic finesse of Lara Croft and yet he manages to pull of incrdible feats of daring-do….somehow.
He definitely does not have the military calm and courage of a Space Marine, Marcus and his comrades are always inching forward to the next cover closer to their objectives and they don’t flinch nor complain. But Nate on the other hand, he lingers throughout the area, running around the same spots back and forth for ammo and for cover. He only goes forward because he truely has no other option and his only reason for being there in the first place is less than honorable;he’s a treasure hunter and he thinks he’s a decendant of a historical figure. What an ego!

I was truely atonished at how well the character is realized and presented through the in-game model and gameplay actions alone.
Never mind the superb voice acting!

I think Uncharted is the epitome of the genre.
It refines ever element that came before it and then some.

Hi Christophe,

A french player in Singapore here, just registered on the site to say thank you for the great demo which displays some of the best character animation and environments I’ve seen in a video game so far (Kind of remind me of what prince of persia and flashback did in their time). There has without a doubt been some amazing work done in the production of this game.
Was planning to get the game and after playing the demo i will definitely be standing in line to buy it.
And of course great work in getting the demo fixed so quickly

Just registered to say great work ND.

Fixing a demo for people that cause of Sony’s idiotic idea to divide the world wasn’t supposed to have really shows you caring about the fans.

The demo was a blast and the game is a “must have”
