Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune - First Review

+ Posted by Evan Wells // Co-President, Naughty Dog

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune Pack Front.jpg

Hey everybody, I’m back again!

I just wanted to drop everyone a quick note here five days before we launch Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune (a day earlier than expected even!). I also wanted to point out that our first review has posted with IGN, be sure to check it out.

All of the Naughty Dogs couldn’t be more excited to see the game finally hit the shelves. The marketing machine is starting to move into high gear, so hopefully we’ll all start to see Nathan Drake plastered all around town. On the note of the marketing machine, check back with the blog later this week to catch a sneak peek of our TV spot.

The response to the demo that we released last week has been outstanding. I’m really glad everybody’s enjoying it. And I hope I don’t come across as too conceited to say that the complete game is even better! We really tried to design Uncharted as a comprehensive package and it was challenging to select a slice of it that captures the huge variety of gameplay that we have in the game.

In closing, I’d just like to say congratulations and thanks to everybody who had involvement in the creation of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. And that includes all of you on the forums who have been giving us encouragement and feedback along the way… believe it or not, we were listening, and many of your comments helped us make Uncharted a better game.

I just read the lamest report on gamespot.com. Some dufus analyst said Uncharted and Haze are in danger of not getting much retail space because of too many big games. Sure, pick on big PS3 games instead of mediocre Wii and 360 games. How could anyone ignore Uncharted in stores? If anything the copies won’t last long enough to take up shelf or storage space.

By the way, is anyone else having a problem on this site? I keep getting an out of memory error at line 130 message. I thought it was my office computer but now it happened at home too. Maybe it’s a bug in this blog software.

I never heard average reviews are all in high 8’s and low 9’s. What AAA games average 97 on metacritic, and gamerankings like you state? Only bioshock, cod4, and super mario galaxy got those types of reviews. Halo 3, R&C TOD, MP3, and many other games got tons of 9’s to make them AAA games, and this game is getting similar reviews. I mean honestly. How can anyone be disappointed if someone reviews this game and gives it a 8. Assasin Creed ‘the terrible’ ps3 game as you called it, is a terrible game. It is getting 6’s and 7’s almost everywhere, except it isn’t a ps3 exclusive, or it would be mediocre. Instead because it is getting great scores, but not comparable to any of teh games mentioned above and is on xbox 360 it is more superior than uncharted, and because ign stated that xbox 360 has the superior version you mention it on this site? Other sites said differently, except you don’t acknowledge them for the sole reason to troll. That said, gamesblow can you stop arguing because you have already contradicted yourself stating that this game is the last game you are going to buy, but ironically played through the whole game and is disappointed that there wasn’t a swimming level hopefully will be in the next uncharted game in 2years? How did you play a game you haven’t bought yet?

So… gamesblow lives here or something? He really hates him some PS3. Too bad he never says anything worth saying.

I don’t hate the Ps3… Or Sony. I spent the better half of a year building an impressive fanboy blog about them and preaching their praise. With over 700 dedicated readers at that. I’m disappointed in Sony and Naughtydog. Big Difference. I expected much more from both of them. sony on the hardware side. I expected Sony to give us a machine that was capable. Naughtydog, I can’t fault too much. they’re working on inferior hardware. Those guys are incredible dev’s.. I really love ‘em… it’s a shame their hardware of choice is so underpowered, though.

Congratulations on the great reviews. (Just for the record, I knew it was going to be great and don’t need any reviews to tell me that). I haven’t played the demo and I don’t intend to. I’d rather look forward to the enjoying the full game.

Please bring back Jak! Maybe even a Ratchet and Jak team-up? ;)

PLease loose Gamesblow!. This blog is unreadable with all his crap! Imagine people actually listening to him and useing his advise… Oh NO!

Why i posted about assasins creed here is just for info.. people need to know to shut off all ps2 options before playing this game.. just in case someone like gamesblow come’s across this bug and starts his rants again.

games blow you said that assassin’s creed had only a few paths threw the city and you could not jump. i just played it and you can go anywhere you like you don’t have to stick to the path. you said there is no jump button. hold r1 and press x. i think it’s ok when you have a different tought about games then others but don’t tell lies.

@ #256 pharmd
You have a PHD in molecular biology? ……………………..pardon me………………………..(Hysterical laughter)…………………
ok, so let’s just take a look at this claim of yours, shall we?
Please answer the follwing questions:
What is the common name for Elapidae Acanthophis antarcticus?
How many atoms make up one “rung” of a strand of DNA?
What percentage of the DNA in a human cell actually does something?
How much common DNA do humans and bacteria share?
How many genes are in the human genome?

Back on topic….
AWESOME GAME GUYS!!!!!
I loved IGN’s video reviewer: “Buy this game!” ~waiting for Nov. 19…….~

@315 You know thingg, there is such a thing as google and I, with no background in biology but access to the internet, could answer all these questions. People with PHD’s play video games too, is it that hard to believe?

Anyway, good job on the game guys, I’ve been telling all my friends with PS3’s to download the demo and try it out for the sheer awesomeness. The coolest thing when I played was Drake’s clothes getting wet! sounds odd, but I have been waiting for a game that does this for so long. It shows the devs attention to small, unecessary detail which I like to see in a game. Because if they pay attention to little stuff, the overall experience will be amazing. Thanks for a good game guys.

@312

Assassins creed does not have a jump button. You cannot simply jump when you want. sorry… You haven’t played it if you’re trying to tell me this. Also, as I said in my review, there are a limitted number of ways thru the game and it’s not as open ended as you’d think. Re-read it, jackson. I have the game, you obviously don’t.

saunderswan  |  November 15th, 2007 at 12:08 pm

right trigger and A button makes you jump while standing still but there is no just JUMP button so your both right and wrong :D

Uncharted is simply awesome. I’m 6 hours into it since I got it last night, and absolutely loving it.

Lara Croft Tomb Raider + Disney’s National Treasure + Indiana Jones = Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune

I realize this. However, I seriously doubt you could easily find some of the answers even using google. Anyway, even if he did answer, I still wouldn’t believe him because of the reason you gave. (and it is legit, my brother said the same thing.)
In any case, what’s said is said and I can’t take it back.
My sincere apologies to all for my semi-trolling. It won’t happen again.

Just got Uncharted earlier today 4hrs into it all i gotta say is games like this is why i am a gamer. Naughty Dog you rock. Only badthing i gotta say is on the back of the case you have Gamepro quoted when i believe the IGN reviewer stated “This is the best game i played all year.” Something like that anyway just a nitpick but this has been a huge gaming year.

Hmm.. you see to me (I own both PS3 and Xbox360 consoles), Gamesblow comes across as a lone and relatively sane voice amidst a sea of brainwashed Sony fanboys.

Assassin’s Creed has been panned by IGN, whose review will be all-too-familiar to PS3 owners…

“These big open worlds, which are fully interactive, do come at a severe cost on PS3. There is considerable texture pop-in and noticeable framerate issues. Playing back-to-back with the 360 version, it’s obvious that Ubisoft did not devote enough resources to the PS3 edition. The framerate is considerably worse, so much so that it begins to affect gameplay in the later levels. You can get through the first two-thirds of Assassin with the framerate being just an annoyance, but it becomes more of an issue for the final third of the missions.”

MY REVIEW ON UNCHARTED..THATS RIGHT I BOUGHT IT AND BEAT IT FIRST DAY LOL. READ!!!!

UNCHARTED: Drake’s Fortune

WARNING!!!! This Game Will Have You HOOKED!!!

This game is a mix of others…kinda..this game will have you drooling for hours.

Tomb Raider - You are searching for treasure, in this case The Lost Treasure of El Dorado.
Prince Of Persia - Swing from vine to vine and get on ledges, scale walls, and solve puzzles.
Resident Evil 4 - Over the Shoulder shooting, or run and gun from the hip.
Killswitch - Shoot behind cover method.
This game does remind me of those games, but very slightly. The story, gameplay, and beauty of this game, truely seperates itself from those mentioned above.

Only Problems I had with this game:

No Dual Weild (new options for Uncharted 2 !?)
I am mad the story has to come to an end
Naughty Dog Has Not Made an announcement when UNCHARTED 2 will release
That’s right, if UNCHARTED 2 came out today, i would buy it. That’s how good this game is.

Bottom line, Naughty Dog has done it again. From Acting, to storyline, from gameplay, to replay value, this game will have you laughing at it’s humor, and sweating during it’s gun-battles.

If you are a PS3 owner, or a PS2 owner waiting for a reason to buy a PS3, UNCHARTED IS IT!!!!

This game will go down as a PLAYSTATION CLASSIC.

GAMEPLAY - 10.0 (Top Noch)
STORYLINE - 10.0 (How about this, AAA TITLE!!!!!)
GRAPHICS - 10.0 (If this is only a small % of Graphics on the PS3, I can only imagine”)
REPLAY VALUE - 10.0 (You will play it over and over, and over and over and over)
ACTING, CAMERA, ETC - 10.0 (Can we say, “Are you sure this isn’t a movie!?”)
LENGTH - 10.0 (It is perfect length, I just am jealous it had to end)

OVERALL - 10.0

Evan, if you ever see this…. ould you by chance add Sixaxis support as an option for the jet ski? That would’ve been perfect to use on these parts. I was so wanting to open this part up with some motion control for the 1st time. I thought you didn’t use motion enough. Not that I wanted a lot of it, but.. I think it’d have been nice to have as an option. Also, where’s the jungle? I wanted so much more jungle. People seem to have a misconception the game was all in the jungle, which… only a few levels are in it. Again, I lvoe you guys and you smashed my expectations. Don’t go back to Jak. “ha”
