Hey everyone. We know you like to hear about updates a few days in advance, so here’s a quick heads up that we have a new System Software update in the works.

Firmware v2.01 is a minor update that will improve the stability of PLAYSTATION 3.

We’ll provide more specifics as the update is about to go live, but we thought we’d give loyal blog readers advance notice!

Is there any chance this also enables DivX playback? If not, could you let us know when we could expect that? Either way, thanks for the update.

Sony,
I will continue to support you guys for as long as I continue to game. If there is a problem….fix it. If there is a way to make things better…do so. As far as I’m concerned you’re doing well. 5 – 6 million units in the first year with all the flack surrounding the price and games. Then to have to contend with the other two systems….

Well on track for another big year. Keep turning out all the cool new functionality for the system and continue supporting your game developers as much as possible. Just keep us informed along the way….

ozzyuno said:

Yes it would!! Hope they will do something for us..

eksMAN said:

will divx playback be included in this firmware update?

Lithgow said:

November 16th, 3:39 pm

No joke. Divx!
And if you update people are out there, listen, and listen well. If you add Divx, you MUST add Xvid. Otherwise, everyone will be devastated. Half of my videos are in Divx, half are in Xvid. They are so closely related that there should be no problems other than licenses to add Xvid.
Please, make my day, Sony!

I really hope you guys will fix the stability issues, especially with that notification bar thing… when turned on, it makes my system lag.

And oh, its silly of me to ask of you so soon, give us divx and in-game xmb… I don’t personally care about the latter, but the community wants it. The market has spoken. ;)

ozzyuno said:

November 16th, 3:41 pm

To soon for divx, but it will come!! Let’s just hope for a birthday present for ps3!!

KatanaKing said:

Well i hope that you guys fix the remote play via internet, and add DIVX…..thanks for the heads up,.

Guys don’t get your hopes up about what content you wish was in the firmware.

This is simply a .01 update which means you won’t get Home or in-game XMb or other goodies. Most likely it will fix some of the issues people are having with the 2.00 update.

Be realistic and be thankful that they are communicating to us ahead of time.

@ #1: I don’t see how a “minor” update will constitute Home or anything major like that.

But who knows, it may just be in Beta form so only certain people will get the invite and the update is necessary for it.

However, I’m predicting that the DivX update will be in this firmware update, but they may be holding off on it for a bit longer.

If this is just a stability fix because 2.0 was buggy then I’m going to say it again. Please stop releasing bad updates! The process may has been simplified since launch but it’s still a long process. Test, test, TEST!

If this actually ads some features, then cool.

I personally didn’t suffer any errors from the update, but I’m happy that you are releasing the fixes for the people that are having problems. I wonder if there will be any other changes added with this update. Looking forward to it.

Not about the firmware, though I hope it stops my PS3 from crashing since 2.00, but It would be nice, you know, for a small $10 on our psn accounts for christmas? huh?

I am assuming this will fix the still video previews in folders and stop my PS3 from restarting it’s self everytime I turn it off.

I have a pretty good idea what this will fix. With the 2.00 release, there were problems when trying to turn the system on remotely (using a PSP) and then turning it off remotely when the system is attached to a television by an HDMI cable and the television is off.

Basically, when you tried to do this, you would be able to turn it on remotely… but if you tried to play video, it would not display properly. Then, when you’d try to shut off the system remotely, it would perform a forced shut-down of the system, which would also power-down the network adapter. As a result, you could no longer turn the PS3 on remotely unless you manually turn the system back on and then back off.

So, essentially, there is a good chance that 2.01 corrects this “instability” of the remote features introduced in the 2.00 update.

I bet it’s not gonna be anything special at all. Probably just gonna fix a little things here and there. I wouldn’t count on a PS3 birthday present either.

With millions of lines of code to test on hundred of thousands of permutations (TV sets, routers, etc.), it’s impossible for them to catch everything.
Nice to hear Sony is listening to us (well, not me since I didn’t have any problems w. 2.0, but…) and not wait 4 – 6 months between update fixes. I’d say that it’s a good thing, although I’m sure someone will find a way to turn it into something negative…

afrosheen said:

Yeah 2.01 is a bugfix release for the PSP Remote Play stuff. Kudos for taking only a week to nail it down and fix it.

Thank you for the heads up….now hears a heads up to you from a loyal ps3 fan to you…
in game XMB so that you can listen to music while playing games…and put a clock on it…..PLEASE

Also, everytime i start anything on the PS3 like a game or anything, it fizzes for a second and flashes static…very annoying…please fix!!
Thanks alot!!

Yeah, i hope they kill that orange thingy in the corner. If it was updated like, oh i don’t know… once a week it might be OK. It seems a little gimmicky, and does not look as if it will ever give me any news or information i need. It just seems like it is not up to par with the rest of the system. Why not link to the PS3 blog or a site with actual information instead of this little window that has lousy promotions!!!! Sorry about the rant, but it is on topic as it was part of the last firmware update. I would just kill this thing before it embarrasses you. Spell check needed :)

Seems ok my ps3 since the 2.00 update. It did crash once when i played Uncharted &twice when i was surfing the internet on it. Don’t know if thats to do with the 2.00 update??? Only had it for a few weeks now. Brilliant machine tho!!!;-P

Thank you for the news. I will always support Sony. Every electronic I own I try to make sure that it is Sony. Keep up the good work! I know the things that everyone wants will come soon. I would rather you make sure that it works well when you release it.

MrCamo said:

November 16th, 4:38 pm

I noticed that!! the PS3 is doing a hard re-set every time i hit it with my PSP, or sometimes when i just use the PS button to turn it off. That is most likely the extent of the PS3 update. I would not count on your video codec support until closer to the end of the year though.

silentmatt said:

November 16th, 4:39 pm

Will this help the crashing issue with Assassin’s Creed? Because seriously, the game is almost unplayable.

MrCamo said:

November 16th, 4:41 pm

BTW, i think Sony needs a tounge in cheek infmercial that displays what you can do with the PS3, the PSP, and what remote play and the video chat is about. I don’t think that half of the people that have PS3’s even know all that it can do for them. You could show the ability to view the Playstation Eye signal via Remote Play, and probably sell a lot more peripheral devices, PSP’s and probably more PS3’s. Why not a PSP/PS3 bundle just to rub Microsoft’s nose in it?

PlayerBeyond said:

November 16th, 4:44 pm

Hopefully this will solve most of the issues such as PS3’s randomly turning on and off…

Anways, in-game xmb, divx, etc.

brandothe2nd said:

November 16th, 4:48 pm

I’m pretty sure that all this update is meant to do is fix the stability issues some people have been having with the xmb since 2.00.. me being one of them. Please stop asking for in game xmb for this and future updates, they know you want it, they are most likely working on it, and they’d probably be a little more motivated by some positive comments on here rather than whiny little buggers complaining every time they release something. I for one think Sony is doing a great job at improving functionality. We don’t DESERVE anything so be happy with what they are releasing.

Demonik – I don’t know about your prediction. I do know one thing that will be updated this year. The Blu-ray player will be updated to version 1.1. So the PS3 will be 1.1 compliant in 2007. I read that on another site. Maybe that will be in the next update. The link I read said by the end of 2007.

damn … talk about wanting to chat with your friends on your buddylist. I agree though, the above request would be nice, but lets get the system stable first … sometimes including those things will cause all kinds of other problems.
