Ever Wonder Who’s Reading All Those Comments?

409 10

Hey gamers! Response to this here PlayStation.Blog has been so impressive, that SCEA decided that someone needed to be brought in to help keep an eye on it full time. I’m that person. Really, I’ve been lurking behind the scenes here for over a month, but it’s time to come out and say hello.

Among other things, it’s my job to help connect those who create software, hardware, and peripherals for PlayStation systems, and those of you who play them. And I can’t do it without you, the faithful and passionate readers.

So keep those comments coming – we’re reading them! Also, please feel free to utilize the Contact Us section (on the right side of the blog) if what you wanna say is off-topic. We read that too, even if we don’t necessarily have enough hours in the day to write back to each of you.

In the near future, we plan on coming to you more and more, finding out what you want to know and what you’d like to see here on PlayStation.Blog.

As a lifelong gamer, and a PlayStation fan since the days of (the original) Twisted Metal, Resident Evil and Crash Bandicoot games – I’m ecstatic to be here and to serve in this role. Keep me busy.

  • Idea for Sony

Why not integrate a program for the Ps3 that would convert other media files into 1080p MP4 format by using the Cell processor. I am sure with the processing power of the Cell it would be a very useful program that would convert video files to 1080p on the fly by using all the cores.

    Hopefully You’ll Think About it.

  • Stands up. Begins the “slow clap” for Jeff and for Sony letting Jeff FINALLY put a human face on our favorite multi-gazillion $ company.

Good work. PLEASE DO KEEP IT GOING!

  • Hi Jeff, welcome. It’s good to know someone at Sony reads this.

I invite you to read what I wrote at the Playstation 3 forum about the “PS3 Updates 2.01” and the problem several of us are having:

    http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&thread.id=2137076&view=by_date_ascending&page=198

I hope you can help me get my word to the right ears, maybe the technical department, or the guys in charge of the Firmware Updates. I think we deserve an answer.

Thanks a lot and hope to hear from you soon.

    Best Regards

  • Any chance of Sony implementing the same idea on what it calls it’s European semi-official blog Threespeech?
Europe is the one area Playstation is not struggling in and it’s the one market they constantly neglect to the point of rudeness.

  • Hi Jeff

    bad news for you :-P

some people including me have difficulties with PS3s Backward compatibility. If im launching a PS1 or a PS2 game my screen shows overscan. There no setting within the xmb or my displays osd to fix the problems.
    + i’m not speaking japanese.

Any chanche to fix the problem?

Sony should also make some prepaid cards available, cause its not common to pay with a Credit Card in Europa.

P.S. Respect for making the ps3 a quality gaming console errrr home entertaiment system unlike MS even if it got more expensive.

    Best Regards

  • @Kedaro

LOL…dude if your on a bad list then i’ve been banned in Sony’s eyes for telling them like it is without sugar coating the BS

They dont want to touch anything i say for fear of making me a martyr…LOL even though i bet Mr. Jeff over there agrees with at least half the stuff i mentioned :)

  • Jeff for the love of god get those developers who work on the FW updates working overtime and deliver us in game xmb this Christmas so we can message our friends while playing our favorite games this holiday season =D That’d be a nice X-mas present =P

  • @ Loucifer: They say it’s so Sony can hear what the fans are saying and to respond to them but whenever a fan is angry (and not in the majority) they are ignored, it took ages just for the in game XMB reply to come back. I posted a few things from Region coding to pricing and none of it has been adressed yet.

@ JEFF: You don’t have to answer them all but try and answer some of my questions please.

    1. (look at my post at 303 and comment on that).

    2. How does the TV recording feature work, do we need to hook it up to Sky or not?

    3. Can you give us any hints of any new offers, SKU’s or price models to come?

  • @Sigil

the only way to know for sure who is or is not the majority is conduct a survey with such questions like “Has this blog served a functional purpose in your everyday internet travels?” like Patrick Seybold said it would in his FIRST blog post ever

or other questions like “Has the PS3 performed to your expectations”…if Sony was REALLY after the happiness of the consumers they would try a little harder to open up and listen to the consumers…otherwise its just another multibillion dollar dictatorship…very similiar to the monopolizing MS with ONE HUGE DIFFERENCE….MS gives the consumers what they want…Sony can do whatever it wants to do…thats the joys of running such a huge company….but just like any huge country in the world…its powerless without the people!!!

  • I would be a regular listener of a Sony podcast, if it were to happen.

A listener letterbag would be a must.

I’d also like to hear about what *every* region is getting, and what the decisions behind those releases were.

I also want to bring one thing up….

What are the chances of some of the old PS1 games that didn’t get a release in North America being released as a PSN download? (In the same way that Nintendo has been releasing previously Japan only Nintendo games)

That is a *big* issue for me, and I’d like to see it addressed.

Scratch that, it is *the* Number One issue on the PSN for me. Moreso, even, than Home.

    I want it addressed.

  • I would love nothing more then to see the PS3 become the system of choice…being a sony fan since i used my Genesis as a BB gun target…but it all comes down to the truth and the truth is this!

yes the PS3 is new(not so much anymore) and like every new system theres a “grace” period for advancement…and in the previous 2 life cycles of Sony systems there was not much competition for Sony….BUT and let me say that AGAIN….BUT…this generation MS has created that competition in the 360…and quite frankly all the BS about the RROD and garbage like that is irrelevant…Sales #’s are the bottom line here…and even with less superior hardware and far more superior software the 360 is kicking the PS3’s ass…games, content, options…its all there…and people are buying it!!!! and especially when a title is slated for both systems and the 360 gets it weeks or months before the PS3 and when the PS3 gets it…its nothing more then a 360 port anyway…Exclusives or so-called exclusives like UT3 and Haze delayed beyond belief and now the talk is those titles are moving to the 360(unconfirmed as of yet ofcourse)…do you think the general population is saying “Oh i’ll just buy a PS3 its a better piece of hardware”???…hell no!!!!!!!!!! they’re saying get the 360 cuz Sony now has more issues then MS…being a Mgr in an electronics and gaming environment i would be doing my own sales #’s a dis-service by turning anyone away from a PS3…but when someone asks me to be honest…our 30 second conversation 110% of the time ends in “I’ll take the 360”

  • @ Loucifer: PS3 is better value for money and Sony tries harder than MS atleast so I beliebe Sony deserves to be the hardware of choice but I’m still a big 360 fan. I’d get a PS3 if they’d move the price closer to American price for Europe.

The delays are really bad, in fact my suggestion is that Sony looks into making a simpler processor or simpler programming environment for the next generation so it can release games sooner, without delays and no bad ports. It would also help Sony maxamize there hardware much earlier on next time too which would allow devs to showcase the consoles power earlier with lower production costs and possibly more launch titles. I also advise that they shouldn’t make it purposefully hard to port games from and to since that has shown it can be bad.

  • I’ve got a few questions:

    1. Is it possible to have a in game XMB or is it up to the dev to enable that in certain games?

    2. Any chance if upping the file format for videos, music and pictures. I’d like my phone recording clips to be able to play.

    3. What about showing what video or music you are watching/ listening to by displaying the title and the icon where the game is displayed on the friends list.

Here is a huge list of ideas if you need some.

    http://community.eu.playstation.com/showthread.php?t=80506

Also any chance of Europe getting some more love seeing that it’s doing well over here, we payed more, waited longer and got less games at launch.

  • @Sigil

yea EU gets the shaft on price…i bought mine at launch for $600 usd…dont know what that translates to in Euro or Lbs whatever i know its more then USD’s thats for sure…so yea im a bit bitter since my sys sits in the livingroom collecting dust except for the occasional Bluray movie i buy…

theres no point in buying multiplatform games on the PS3 cuz they’re all lower quality ports i just buy them for 360 it’s much better AND i get a sense of accomplishment with the achievement system…as far as first party titles…i learned my lesson with the purchase and subsequent returns of Warhawk (what a nightmare) and Lair (huge disappointment)…R&C is for kids…as a matter of fact the only rated M game i played was the disgusting RB6 port…i refuse to waste my money on poorly ported and rated T PS3 games…and i know im going to catch a beat down for this comment but Uncharted unfortunately plays like Gears of Wars with a tomb raider feel…now my opinion about this game is that it was a REALLY good try…but with so many similarities in combat sequences with the aforementioned MS title Uncharted wore thin on me real quick…then my life was taken over by COD4, Timeshift & Mass Effect…all killer games for the 360…so until Sony gets its act together i’ll just keep feeding the MS beast.

  • Thanks Jeff, its easier this way to find the question, thanks again for listening.

  • Seeing that you are reading these pass this along to SONY. The new PS3 and PSP heavily laded ‘flash’ pages are brutal. SONY what are you think it takes 20 seconds or more to load content.

Not referring to the PS3’s browser either. LOL

  • Loucifer, those are just your personal opinion and preferences. They do not represent many’s views. Certainly not mine. Except for Lair, the other exclusive PS3 games I bought are top notch. I am talking about Uncharted, R&C, Resistance, MotorStorm, Eye of Judgment, Folklore. The cross platform games are lesser on PS3 but that’s because this is the first time they developed for PS3, I am very happy with my PS3 now, and have even bought some Blu-ray movies. So if you don’t like yours or don’t have any use for your PS3 now… my advices is to sell it. There are plenty of others who’d love to have one.

  • Hey Jeff, its nice to see somebody is actually in charge of reading comments on here and offering a reply or two here and there to keep the peace, not that we have a trolling problem….

Anyways, I just wanted to welcome you to the blog and had to say I understand the situation your in. I would rather not say the company that I work for but its nice to see Sony starting to get their act together, but the PS brand and Sony Corp in general have a long way to go.

I hope one day, I can be part of the group that helps bring Sony back to its proud days. Till I find the need to defect, enjoy your new job and dont take things too serious or you will hate your job sooner then later.

  • Jeff!!!!!! As you are a PS3 owner, i want to ask YOU what you would like to see integrated in the XMB in the future. Any special thing you want your bosses to include? :)

Also, can we find you at Warhawk for example??

    thank for being here man!

    Fatez

  • Nice!
… and I doubt you can do anything about this… but any way of getting publishers to tell us what we’re buying?
I’m soooo tired of surfing the internet to find out if UT3 has a splitscreen co-op mode, or if COD4 has online co-op, or if a game has community features like lobbies. This site has inaccurate and inadequate information (often splitscreen co-op games don’t mention this mode and the Playstation site shows Players:1)… but I don’t blame the site, I blame the devs and publishers. Their websites are full of NOTHING. No real information on the games at all.
If you are going to have people here at the Playstation blog speaking about upcoming games, can you encourage them to come prepared with “real” information (cause if I hear the over-used term “next gen graphics” one more time to describe a game, I’ll seriously scream!)

Eh… It’s not likely you can do anything. It seems that the gaming industry wants us to buy a game on hype… and find out what we got after we plug it in our console.

  • Thanks Jeff for the reply. Looking forward to the Folklore Downloadable content tomorrow. It’s going to be quite an update with Shimmering Isles content, Pain and Folklore content. Could be the best update ever.

  • @ Loucifer: I’m from the UK so we get slightly different pricing but roughly the same as the rest of europe, 600 usd for the PS3 is equivilant to £300 but we got charged £425 at laucn (850 usd) and we even had the emotion engine take out of every model so we never got it which means we got worse backwards compatibility, it was released in europe 3 months later and we had to pay more. These are reasons I haven’t got a PS3 yet, I would have got one much sooner but I am personally unhappy with Sony so refuse to buy it till it’s £300 or cheaper with backwards compatibility and a game.

That is about to change soon though, I read a large article in Edge magazine talking of the developers choice to primarily programme on the PS3 and then port to 360 as it is easier to strip away features (to make it run on the 360) than to squeeze more power out for the PS3 port. I agree achievements are fun and can make you want to play games more, on a PS3 collecting every flag on Assassin’s creed would mean nothing but on 360 you get some recognition for it. I read lots of reviews and opinions on games so I would have never bought Lair since I heard the controls were awful, I saw a tournement of Warhawk on Gamer.tv and thought it looked fun but was sort of unimpressed on the whole. Never played R&C cos I don’t like platformers. I never liked the look of Uncharted, simple run and gun action game, the only FPS I playe now is Halo 3 since it has varied combat (vehicles, tools, covenent, brute and human weapons and grenades). Gears of war is good too, love it except when it lags. I like Sony but I think they shouldn’t toute some games as much as they do, I tried Heavenly sword and disliked it quite a bit, in my opinion it’s physics was weightless, the combat was ropey and the AI was simplistic. That’s no insult on the PS3 however as I would easily get Ninja Gaiden sigma if I had one and that would fill the gap of action games till God of war 3 and Devil may cry 4 came out. For me the only problem with Sony is the price, I don’t care how much they shout blue ray cos I don’t have a hi-def TV and it was there choice to sell me what I don’t need so I’m waiting for a price cut. In the Uk that’ll be 2 years away most likely since Sony hates us (my opinion), I call our PS3’s the scrap heap stock since we lose emotion engine first and then they take away software BC for us only. I personally think they give us the worst models all the time, we still have no 80gb and never even got the 20gb.

@ JEFF: If your listening I also advise a price cut and the reintroduction of the backwards compatibility by means of software as the removal of that was just an insult to all fans since Sony admitted readily that it wasn’t a price issue so it is just something they are doing to boost sales of PS3 games. Thats all well and good to try and boost PS3 game sales but do that by making better games rather than stripping away features that some customers won’t realise are gone (mass market consumer) and many want. On every site I go on I have never, ever heard anyone except for a Sony fanboy defend the removal of BC. Had to happe to scrap heap europe.

  • How about this Blog integrating with the PSN?
It would be cool to read/post from my PS3 to this blog.

  • @ CrimsonCalibur

You have your WebBrowser but I get what you mean, built in like the new RSS Feed they have

  • actually CrimsonCalibur does bring up a good point… much of the Playstation site is not viewable from the PS3 browser… the GAP site certainly isn’t.
I rarely use the PS3 browser anymore because I often go to GAP.

Really… the entire Playstation site should be viewable/useable from the PS3 browser!!

  • jeff youre doing a great job.
i do have a favor to ask. can you pass it on through channels that there are a lot of PSP/OSX users who cant use the new store. :-)

  • @Elsa43

really? ive never tried going on here but any clue why? Its not like this site is flash based…

thats why, I think many people have over looked the PS3’s greatest potential. Linux. That can unlock such amazing multi-media powers that the PS3 can offer like Widgets, full functional web browser etc.

  • Hiya, this is my first post blah blah no one cares. But actually, I do have some real questions for you (it’s interesting to think I might actually get a reply!)
I’ve noticed two previous mentions of Skype on PS3, and I too would love to have it. I know it’s not really in your domain though, it would probably take some lobbying with the guys at E-bay who run Skype to get them to work on the PS3. But I know it would be a major asset to the Playstation 3’s capabilities. There shouldn’t be too much of a problem with making Skype work on the PS3, though, as Skype already works on another PPC architecture–Macs. To get Skype to work on a PS3 right now, I would have to install Linux and install it, and hope I can find all the right drivers, and hope that the Linux Skype packages work on PPC and lots of other hassles. So it’s not impossible–but it’s troublesome for an average consumer. Near-impossible for a regular high school student who just wants to use Skype on the nice TV, instead of the little computer monitor, to talk with his exchange student from last year who went back to Japan.
Speaking of Linux, is there any possibility whatsoever the the RSX will be opened to other operating systems? or is keeping it to just the PS3’s OS really that important? I can see no losses for allowing someone who just wants to run Linux to uses the RSX for video editing, or photo-editing. To make the PS3 viable as a replacement for a PC (Which is possible!) Sony should allow users to use the WHOLE system for other operating systems so we can do what we like. And trust me, I’ll still be playing your games on it, I would just like to be able to use the RSX for other things too. Then again, the Cell’s powerful enough that it shouldn’t be bad, but… please?
Thanks for reading all my rambling, and I’m glad to see someone’s on here reading this and answering some (maybe not all, mine might go unnoticed as I represent a VERY small group of users who want a totally open platform) of these questions. Thanks again,
    Chilker

  • I love ps3’s XMB to death and I can see the potential with it.

The thing I really want to see is to be able to play my own music in games……..I know Sony doesn’t really like the idea but this is something the competition has had for a while and is one of the features I’d really love to use in games.

I love Motorstorm but the music there can sometimes be annoying, I’d like to crash through the mud with some of my music.

By the way much love to Ken Kutaragi, knew he was the man in the ps1 days and still is, hope he comes back too.

  • Hey, i JUST registered for this blog so bare with me if this is in the wrong place posting wise. Anyway, is there anything planned for a sony supported bluetooth headset? What I mean is : will there be full headset support in all of the ps3’s online games? This IMO is the only place the 360 has the ps3 beat. Don’t get me wrong, I am an avid PS fan but i am able to concede when there is something better out there…

  • Welcome to the Blog. I look forward to you bringing tons of good information. Have a good day

  • How about Ogg Vorbis and Flac support for audio?

  • Jeff,

I think a podcast would be essential. Hitting on the topics such as upcoming games, download content, developer interviews, PSN updates, firmware updates, functionality, Home, even topics such as sales statistics and game reviews would be excellent. I think it’s important that we all have different streams to gain access to for these topics.

*Question* Are we to continue posting in this thread to communicate with you and SCEA or should we stem those direct posts elsewhere? Thanks for taking on this job, best of luck to you.

  • Another *Question*;

Would you rather us not post directly to you and just keep it general, my guess is people are going to anyway, but are you looking for some uniformity in the posts for your own personal organization?

    Thanks

  • I’d like to see and/or find out about some more Guitar Hero 3 song packs… im pretty bored with the ones i already downloaded

  • Jeff,

I would first like to welcome you and I hope this is the beginning of great things to come. I would also like to repeat what others have said in that I too would LOVE to see a podcast here!

  • Hi Jeff,

    Welcome!

I have a huge want-list of features for both PS3 and PSP, as well as the blog. Would the “Contact Us” form be the best way to submit that? Does that go to you, among others? Is there any formal process yet where Sony is looking at user comments to help prioritize feature updates, or is that something you are working on?

I’m loving the updates here, btw – especially from the dev teams.

    Cheers!

  • Yo, Jeff… ughh… whatever, dude who reads these comments. Tell them people, ya know, the higher ups & whatnot, those folks that make the games & push the stuff in development & whatever to start pushing more remote play! REMOTE PLAY!!

I’m just saying… I’d gladly pay up for an update from the playstation network store to be able to play some of those games on my psp via remote play as I roam around. Blast Factor, Stardust HD, PAIN… all the Playstation Network Store titles should be remote play compatible!! I’d throw down another $10 to be able to play PAIN on my psp through remote play. Really, tell those folks to push remote play more & get everybody down on it, cause that’s taking gaming to a new level & blasting the competition out of the water.

Oh yeah, thanks for reading this stuff.

  • @starman1337

personal opinion is all it is….so i appreciate and thank you for not jumping down my throat for it…we’re all entitled to our opinions

  • Any idea when Playstation HOME BETA will be out? sometime this month?

  • Dear Sony

Hello Sony, i, well, actually…. we (every single PS3 user in Mexico) really hope you read this:
We have been true sony fans for a REALLY long time, if only you could see…. like 8 out og every 10 true gamers here in Mexico choose PS3 and Sony over the other consoles and brands, and well now my point….
We would like you Sony to support us the way we do, firstly, we all like to purchase content from the PSN but the only way to do that well is with a credit card AND RIGHT NOW IF YOU HAVE A MEXICAN CREDIT CAR DYOU CANT PURCHASE CONTENT OFF THE PS STORE! please let us purchase !!!!! i mean, when they ask for the billing address, there are like a million country options BUT MEXICO IS NOT THERE!!!! so please Sony, you are losing some customers here… please!! let us buy from Mexico!!!!!!!! support us the way we support you!

    thanks for the time, really

  • Hey Jeff, have you seen this vision of the PS Store from a dedicated PlayStation fan?

    http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=90482

It dates back to August but I think you should implement this design! Its awesome and much better than the medicore PlayStation Store we know as of now!

I like the fact that its a modified XMB of its own so when you press X or O on the PS Store in the XMB, its own XMB comes up which I think you guys should do as the XMB is a kick ass Sony thing!!

Add custom soundtracks to games and In Game XMB and I will be so happy I would recommend the PS3 to everyone with confidence!
