PLAYSTATION Network Cards Update

169 0

If you stopped by one of of the major gaming sites in the last day or so, there’s a good chance you’ve seen one of these stories confirming the existence of PLAYSTATION Network cards, or the debut of such cards in Japan.

We’ve heard the call – usually around the time we update the PLAYSTATION Store – from loyal PS3/PSP owners who’d like to give (or receive) these cards as a gift, and from those who’d like an alternative to using a credit card to purchase things on the PLAYSTATION Store. So here’s an update: Yes, the option many of you have been asking for – PLAYSTATION Network Cards – are coming, and should start appearing at retailers in early ’08. The cards will be redeemable via the PLAYSTATION Store for PC, and on the PLAYSTATION 3 to supply the wallet with funds to spend on games, add-ons, and other paid content.

We’ll continue to keep you updated here on the PlayStation Blog as their arrival grows nearer.

  • Nice. I can’t wait until this comes out. Soon, can we get an exact release date? That would be super!

  • this is so cool thank you sony, but it’s better if you guys bring it out for Christmas.

  • Over a year late, but then again PS3 owners are used to waiting.

  • Thats Awsome SONY im glade too see you respond so promptly. Keep up the Great work!
    :)

  • yep, I agree to the first post. Should have had these cards out a long time ago. Not that I needed them, but it would have been nice!

  • This is wonderful!

I really like using the cards for things like services on the Wii, and now I can finally use them on my console. Thank you, Sony!

But how early are we talking here? Is this like, January, or are we talking about something like April?

  • YESSSSS!!!!

    THANX SONY!!!

  • Awesome!

  • @Kedaro (#20)

Thanks for your comment, I think you made a really good point there. I just want to buy&play PAIN so badly…

I wonder if a Jeff Rubensteinish person can give a satisfying answer to your last question…?

  • ah good to hear the cards are on the way.

  • Nice to hear the cards are finally being released somewhere. I only hope you guys release them here in Australia (among other countries) as well.

Also Eric, I urge you to take BC alittle more seriously. Since the last firmware update two of my PS2 games (Fahrenheit and The Getaway Black Monday) stopped working. The makes the total games out of my collection of 57 that don’t work down to 5. Please ensure that BC is added to these following five games with the next update. PLEASE!

    Jak and Daxter 1
    Manhunt
    Onimusha 2
    Fahrenheit
    The Getaway: Black Monday

  • Nice!… but if you want to buy a friend a game, you still have to mail the card to them!
I can’t believe that you don’t have a “gift giving” option on the PSN store whereby I can buy a map pack or game for a friend just using their PSN name!
It seems that this would increase sales and would prevent the current workaround of having to give out PSN ID information (which I don’t like to do) or alternatively exchanging real names, addresses, or credit card information (which I’m even more reluctant to do!).
I wanted to buy a map pack for a few people in our group who didn’t get it… and there was just no easy way to do it! :(

Please add a “gift giving” option to the PSN store!
(though I guess it’s too late for Christmas… but there is still Birthdays etc!)

  • oops.. .meant to add, that even being able to electronically buy the cards and send them via PSN (in the denomination of our choosing) would also work!

  • I can’t see why they weren’t released earlier, you guys would have made a lot of money but whatever… good that they are coming out :D

  • Thanks Sony. I’m not using my CC unless I really need too.

  • I can’t wait to pick one of these up!

  • Don’t need a PSN Card but nice to know they’re coming.

  • Finally, its taken long enough….now just sort out all online gaming problems and we are sorted…..

    Singstar anyone?

  • Any Cards coming to the U.K(England)???
+I agree with a person a few lines above me! ;-D
TRY & MAKE ALL PS2 GAMES WORK ON MY 60GB PS3! PLZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ;)
You have done most of them, so can’t see why you(Sony)can’t do a few more???

  • Hard to understand why it takes so long seeing as its just a card with some code on it. Should have made it by xmas! :)

Oh and again i would like to see the PS Store interface updated sometime in the future now that more content is available it needs to be even easier to find things you want.

  • Great!!! Now i can buy stuff :D

  • Well, a year or so late, but better late than never.

Now, let’s get some content (other than CaC) worth downloading (that isn’t already on the XBox Live service), and then we’re in business. Otherwise, I’ll spend my money where the good stuff is, on XBox Live.

  • I’m in the U.S. Can I use this card to purchase content from the Japanese PSN- specifically Gran Turismo 5 Prologue?

wow…you just lost a sale from me, Sony. do you guys even care about the PSP or are you going to keep on porting PSP games to the 7 year old zombie?

  • Yes thankyou Sony! This will make it so I can DL great games like Beats, and anything else that may cost me some cash without uesing a Visa card! thankyou!

  • great move guy keepup the good work :) im really happy for who have no credit card :)

  • Nice!! please bring them to Mèxico!!

  • What would sell? MGS 1, 2 and 3 upscaled on one Bluray disk, Or maybe morphed into one big storyline, yeah, I see it: Metal Gear Snake

  • This would be a very merry Christmas if you released these now. But, since it’s likely it won’t be happening, at least you’re comming out with ’em. Thanks.

  • about time. Why did it take soooooooooo long for these cards.

  • Finally. I’ve not wanted to use a credit card for what little I’ve bought from the store. Hopefully these will work fine.

  • I knew they were coming out for sure when I got my refurbished PS3 back a little over a week ago and went to change my password and saw the option “Enter Credit Card/Playstation Network Card” in the menu. :-)

  • I personally have no problem using my credit card but its nice for those who dont have one or cannot get one yet, that there is another way for them to be able to get content off of PS Store

  • Finally, but in EARLY ’08! Too long. And to answer a question, the cards would probaly be region sensitive because of different currencies and stuff.

  • Hey Sony,
I tried to give some support with my wallet today and unfortunately Unreal Tournament 3 was nowhere to be found. Though I’ve never played any UT games. I thought it would’ve been a great help for the Dec numbers. I tried numerous stores, BestBuy, Circuit City, Virgin Mega Store and Toys R Us. Not even a single copy.

“Guess I should’ve went to the Sony Store on Manhattan.”

I know this title doesn’t have anything to do with Sony specifically. Since it’s an Epic game. I haven’t seen a single promo for this UT3 (9.0 from IGN).
Guess I’ll just wait for Burnout Paradise in Jan 08.

  • I have been waiting a long time for this. Thank you Sony for listening to us Gamers. I hope everyone at Sony Computer of America has a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year

  • Guess what’s coming next year is what everyone at Sony says.

  • Cool, finally a way around the messy distribution system – now I can pick things up from the Us PSN store!

  • Great news SONY, I only hope that you guys bring the PSN cards ASAP in Europe.
Almost nobody has a CC here in Europe (including me) and I will buy some things in the PS Store.
I hope it arrives very soon here so i can buy the warhawk expansian!!!

  • This cards would be good for us and for Sony and thats cool

  • finally its coming out

    COME TO CANADA PLEASE!

  • i read on IGN.com that the japanese cards that came out in DEC13 are compatible with other regions. is this true ?

could some one from Sony answer this

    thank you

  • @Sony

There is a huge issue with PSN :

EU users can’t access to US/JP PSN and people… including me think it’s quite unfair not te be able to have to same content all over the world.

Please make the PSN region free.

One last thing, for your video service on the PSN that’ll be released soon : Keep in mind you’ll need to offer a lot of content along with high bandwidth. You’ll need and can offer alot more than X360 service would do.

  • I love that PS3 games have been region free. It would be great like others have stated if the PSN games could be region free. How about a unified PlayStation store enabling people to buy content from other stores. It’s a win win situation.

  • On the software BC front please do some PS3 firmware updates that add in more support for PS2 games! We all know most PSone games work. But the PS2 games have alot of issues! We need StarWarsBF2 to work! I wan’t to buy that game for my PS3 and play it but I won’t if it gets stuck mid gameplay/cutsceens and hangs.

  • Hi Eric Lempel. Yeah, I kind of seen this coming :D. Anyways, yeah it is a great addition as some people, I’m sure many of these commenters as well, needed these. Thanks for not leaving them in the dust. I am fortunate enough to have convinced my parents that we can use the credit card over the internet over the PS3 because it’s super safe :P. However, I do understand that there are certainly many other cases as to why or why not a credit card is not available, so this is again, a great addition. Just have 2 questions to Eric though, I don’t know if you’ll respond but I’ll give it a try:

    1) With regards to the recent talks of in-game XMB and how Sony is “hard at work” trying to implement this feature into a future update, what is this in-game XMB in specifics? Is it an in-game XMB where I press my PS Button and the whole XMB (excluding the settings section because changing settings around during gameplay usually asks for problems…except for the Accessory settings) pops up? Like I see all my music, photos, videos, access the internet, access my friends list, invite friends etc. If so that would be amazing, because we should be able to do things in-game regardless of what a developer wants. It’s the user. See if the developer like for HVB allows in-game music, great, but what if one of my videos finished downloading….I cna press pause and hit the PS button…watch the video. I am satisfied. If a friend messages me, I don’t want to leave my game. If I want to change my blutooth I don’t want to leave. If I want to listen to my music, I don’t want to leave. If I want to show my friend a photo or an in-game screenshot then I don’t want to leave my game. If I want to check out the information bar for any updates I don’t want to leave my game…hell even if I find out there is new updates on the PS Store and want to go check it out, I don’t want to leave my game…you see where I am going right? Some people say that the only thing we NEED is music and friends while in game. We’re not all the same people, some people can find great uses for other things. If Sony can implement complex things like inviting friends and sending receiving messages while listening t omusic in game, then how simple can viewing a photo or viewing a video be in-game? The internet browser is in alot of games, check out Pain when u go to the Community icon, it just locks up the Adress Entry thing…Why cant I do this everywhere and unlock the Address entry so I can go to like hmm, a hint site to help me get around this boss or something. LOL Well that’s enough ranting but I hope we can see a video of a work-in-progress of the current In-Game XMB you’ve established so far if there is anything that you can show us, thanks…

    2) Secondly, can we get a wee-bit of an update on home? Maybe like a walkthrough from the NEWEST version of Home in development and not the Beta. Can we see some information, when we’re looking to expect it? Thanks Eric if you read this

  • Thats pretty awesome! I can’t buy stuff on the Playstation store because I don’t have a credit card, so I’m real excited about this. I hope it can be used in Home also.

  • Stallone, I agree with you 100%

    @Eric Lempel
Have you considered what many PLaystation bloggers have asked for? A software based playstation store, it would be easier for you and for us. You would just have to drop the content into the software and it would put itself to place, you wouldn’t have to edit or create a new page for every small piece of content, and it would be able to be region free, that would be a good thing since that is what most PS3 users argue about. It would also make it easier for us to navigate, since right now it’s the same thing as navigating a website, making it software would make thing so much better for all of us, so PLEASE?

  • I gotta say I am stoked about this, and I wanted to let everyone know that I found a great site with tons of PS2, and PS3 stuff. And the nice thing is you won’t break your wallet by shopping there. I encourage everyone to go and check it out. Go to http://www.theshoppingnation.com you’ll be glad you did!

  • I really hope this is also coming to Europe. Not having cards for the store is killing the PS3..
