PLAYSTATION Network Cards Update

+ Posted by Eric Lempel // Director, PlayStation Network Operations

If you stopped by one of of the major gaming sites in the last day or so, there’s a good chance you’ve seen one of these stories confirming the existence of PLAYSTATION Network cards, or the debut of such cards in Japan.

We’ve heard the call - usually around the time we update the PLAYSTATION Store - from loyal PS3/PSP owners who’d like to give (or receive) these cards as a gift, and from those who’d like an alternative to using a credit card to purchase things on the PLAYSTATION Store. So here’s an update: Yes, the option many of you have been asking for - PLAYSTATION Network Cards - are coming, and should start appearing at retailers in early ‘08. The cards will be redeemable via the PLAYSTATION Store for PC, and on the PLAYSTATION 3 to supply the wallet with funds to spend on games, add-ons, and other paid content.

We’ll continue to keep you updated here on the PlayStation Blog as their arrival grows nearer.

Finally I won’t ever have to see the message on my screen “Credit Card information is not valid”.

I’ve been seeing that message for the last year now…

This is off topic, but did anyone else see this?
http://tech.blorge.com/Structure:%20/2007/12/13/ps3-one-ups-xbox-360-with-its-divx-support/

When M$ announced that their crappy console was getting DivX before the PS3, I was like, “How the heck did they get it before Sony did? Sony was working on it for a long time.” Wow, that article I linked to just blew me away. Sony apparently knew what they were doing.
I just can’t wait until one of my deluded “other console” owning friends brags about their DivX.

Ha Ha HAAAAA!!!!

It will be so awesome to be able to say, “DivX only enabled M$’s console to play the files, but the PS3 is DivX CERTIFIED!!!!! That means game developers can use DivX files in their cutscenes in games!!”

@elmonstro

The X360 isn’t crap, I don’t have one and I don’t intend to buy one because I don’t espescially like Microsoft and I don’t want them to become leaders in the video games industry but the X360 has a lot more gamas than PS3.

Microsoft has almost unlimited funds unlike Sony they can afford to loose billions of dollars, this is what happened with the first Xbox.

The problem with the PS3 is that, apparently It’s kinda hard to draw power from the Cell but It might be good for the future that means current games are far from using the PS3 at a 100%.

@Sony
Please allow in-game 1080p!

I think I may get around to buying from the store about the time I find these for sale.

Until then, I’ll keep gaming and hope to get through my backlog of games.

@#110 dexter48

I’m not saying the games for the “other console” are crap, or even that the whole BRAND is crap. I’m saying that having an initial failure rate of circa 30% is totally unacceptable, no matter what. M$ responded to the high failure rate correctly, but I wonder… Doesn’t M$ have any quality control?
In any case, I will readily agree that the “other console” has fairly impressive hardware specs, it’s just they aren’t nearly as good as the PS3’s.

As far as the Cell being hard to program for, it’s apparently not hard to make games that look at least as good or better using the Cell than their counterparts on M$’s console.

Consider the games that were out for the “other console” when it was around a year old. Gears of War is the best example. Look at the games I mention technically, not based on gameplay. Gears of War used a significant portion of the “other console’s” potential. Now look at a PS3 game at the same timeframe (console is 1 year old). Uncharted is, from a strictly technological point of view, the best game out for the PS3, and it is significantly more “pretty” than Gears of War even though it is at the same place in the development cycle. And Uncharted’s developer Naughty Dog released a press statement that said it used “around 33% of the Cell’s potential” in making Uncharted.

In addition, consider Ubisoft’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2, which is console neutral and was released on both within a space of three months. It looks almost the same on both consoles despite the fact that the PS3’s hardware (and developer’s game engines) are a full year younger than the PS3’s counterpart.

I guess that compared to the PS3, the “other console” isn’t crap, but it’s fairly close……….

Just so everybody knows, I do not have a specific aversion to actually calling M$’s console by name, it’s just I like the effect it has when I type this long comment without ever giving the PS3’s competition a real name.

Great now more people especially younger gamers can just simply buy the online games and start playing. Buy warcraft first it is really a great online game and is getting better with every update.

Sony you need to keep UT3 exclusive if you are not going to get GOW. I went to two Gamestop stores and they were out of the UT3 even Gamefly which is big surprise to me. This means more people even the PC gamers might be buying up the PS3 to play the game since there will be more PS3 players online to play against. The game online is asome. Very fast and looks great especially with the keyboard and mouse usage. Sony spend the money and keep this one it is a system seller and definitely worth the money.

Gravatar

KnaveX  |  December 15th, 2007 at 4:54 pm

I wish UT3 was exclusive, Epic said PS3 wouldn’t get an exclusive from them because they didn’t have a launch lineup and at the time they were able to make a game for them and release it they wouldnt be able to sell it because of Killzone 2, MGS4 and other titles that would probably sell more, but look now, they released UT3, and they don’t really have a PS3 exclusive competition in the genre of FPS, and there’s also the fact that mods are going to be available on this console, not the other, but will Epic keep it exclusive? No, cause they’re another money hungry dev that gets fed by M$

Well. You have so many kids who own a PS3 or have access to one, but they don’t have credit or debit cards.

So this will be an easy way for parents and them to purchase content off of the PS Store. I’m interested to see sales figures before and directly after the release of the PSN cards.

This news is the reason why I have registered and cared to leave a comment although i have been following this blog for months!

There couldn’t be a news for satisfying and exciting for us non-credit card holders and many others who can’t legally own credit/debit cards for various legal reasons. I’m so glad that Sony actually cares about its customers wheather their poor or rich. This is exactly why I didn’t hesitate to shell out 600 on their product. If only Sony cares about its existing install base, the current customers themselves will generate more revenue through referring others to Sony products and software. All we need is your care now that you have our money.

I can’t wait to download Warhawk through PSN on January 2008. And Tekken online here I come! Noobs be very afraid!

This is it!

Thank you SCEA for listening to us.
This will make buying those PSN games and add-ons more manageable.

People really hate using credit cards and being able to just get this card specifically for games is better.

So yeah hopefully it’s not just a $20 one, hopefully there’s a $60, and $100 one.

So when does the playstation store allow Mac access?

I wouldn’t mind signing up, but why only PC?

This doesn’t make any sense at all considering all of the Mac users out there.

=>actually I already did log in, but couldn’t access anything. So what was the point? I was ready to spend money, but there was no way for the website to download anything from the playstation store to my computer…

So how can I say thank you to these cards if I can’t even use them?

To me these cards are absolutely pointless, unless your actually able to get them at a cheaper rate i.e. 50 dollar playstation card for 39.99. Otherwise society just needs to get out of the house and see those little things called prepaid credit cards, these can be used by anybody regardless of your legal standing.

Worst thing they ever could do IMO

Think of this way… Credit Card validates that you are 18 and older. PS3 and it’s games honestly I feel is for mature audiences and I don’t think it should be over-run by kiddies or people who can’t afford it or with bad credit who tend to ruin things for everyone. This is not a Wii or [DELETED} Xbox. I feel that PS3 is the ultimate gaming/media system for mature audiences that can afford to own such a nice piece of equiptment less alone to build a stronger communtity without all the rift raft.

@130 gamenut6659

Yeah, why would ANYONE want to pay $50 for a $50 PSN card when they can spend $55.50 on a $50 prepaid credit card. *rolls eyes*
Just remember, some of us have to actually WORK to get money - Not all of us have parents who will just give us what we want.

(PS3: $600; 32in HDTV: $700; 5 PS3 games: $300; 1 PSN game: $10; Total: $1610.
This is my high-def gaming setup. My parents did NOT pay for any of it. Yeah, we want to spend EXTRA for a prepaid credit card after spending this much already. Right.)

China J  |  December 16th, 2007 at 8:04 pm

LOL - Paypal Card costs nothing. Get Real! The prepaid cards are a joke. Keep your credit clean or be 18 is the way things should be.

Simply giving your kids a psn card is not a responsible thing to do. They can basically download any content at this point beyond the parents knowledge. However responsible parents could make the purchase at the ps3store themselves so that they are aware of their kiddies activities.

I personally would like to see more mature adult directed activies/games. The only way this would ever come to light is if Sony impliments some kind of reasonable control. On that note distributing such cards is not a responsible thing IMO

136

Gravatar

China J  |  December 16th, 2007 at 8:26 pm

Seriously, when “Home” is available what sorta control will there be to keep the kiddies out? Can you imagine the drama of kiddies posing as adults in what technically is an adult environment? You have to draw the line… Is “Home” a free for all or an Adult community? I surely wouldn’t want my children mingling with adults. Face reality there is some wealthy families out there that have bought minor children the ps3 without any concerns that something awful could transpire from such act. PS3 should restrict online purchases to 18 and older verified period and make no exceptions.

137

Gravatar

cmargary  |  December 16th, 2007 at 9:36 pm

@China J..

The card isn’t just for children… are many people that doesn’t have a credit card or doesn’t like credit cards like myself… that’s why I use my atm that works like a master card… and there are so many people too that doesn’t live in the US but use the US account and can’t use their credit cards because the PS Store don’t want it…

Now, I’m with you that the PS3 is more mature audience but the PS3 needs all audience to increase their user base… better user base more developers will do better games in the PS3 and if the 1st party game sell well, more money and time sony will have to spend on the PS3 to make it a better system

Eric, please implement in-game xmb access, more specifically allow players playing different games or outside of games to communicate with each other using the xmb messaging system while during gameplay. It has been the most important feature to be implemented and we are still waiting.

Without the ability to communicate across game, the community aspect is broken once you boot up a game and start playing.

Please and thank you.

@Darkendless,
The link you are pointing to is a GAP link and only GAP members have access. Secondly, the link not working is nothing at all to do with Sony - it’s because the original blog was deleted by the author of the blog… or more likely the case, it was in the story section and got deleted by a moderator (who are volunteers such as myself and in no way employed by Sony) because it didn’t meet the requirements for that section of the GAP site.

I hope that clears up some of that confusion!
(and sorry for going off topic!)
