Firmware Update (v2.10)

403 0

Firmware Update v2.10 is now live. This new system update enhances media playback on the PLAYSTATION 3 in a number of ways that the PS3 community has indicated are important.

We are introducing a much-requested video playback format with this update: DivX and VC-1 (WMV) videos become playable in the Video section of the XMB. This update also brings the PS3’s Blu-ray drive up to Profile 1.1. “Picture in Picture” and other enhancements become available on Profile 1.1 compatible Blu-ray discs.

A voice changer feature is added, enabling you to change the tone of your voice during voice or video chat.

As always, we’re committed to enhancing PLAYSTATION 3 functionality, and we’ll continue to post firmware update details on the blog as they are released.

  • Good update. For the people wanting to play all media on their PS3 you should check out TVersity just google for it. It sets up a media server on a PC that will decode any file type and stream it to the PS3 through it’s media server connectivity feature. It’s not the same as having them on the PS3 hard drive but I prefer to save the space on the PS3 for games. I can still play games on my PC while it’s decoding and sending without it slowing me down and I’m running it on a 2 year old system AMD 64 2.4Ghz and 2GB of ram. So there is a solution for people wanting to play Xvids and other formats it even plays MOV and RM videos.

  • #297 WMA Pro is the sound used in WMV9 (WMV-HD). That’s why most of the WMV-HD files play with no sound, pretty important if you ask me.

Media streaming from DLNA Servers, NAS drives in particular. Why is it that this is always broken after each firmware update and needs a patch? WMA playback appears flakey, some files will play, some cut off after 44/45 seconds. The same files played back flawlessly in 2.01.

  • So are we never going to get in game XMB or what? This is something we were promised a while ago and have heard no news about it at all. Its been quite a while and while we like the updates we get I can’t believe its taking so long for the one update that 99% of PS3 fans are so desparatly craving. Everything is being delayed on us and even though part of it isn’t Sonys fault, we have to wait for Home and in game XMB will at least make every one happy until then. I am hoping that we aren’t going to have to wait for Home for this update as that will be almost a year since you annouced this update was coming and thats kind of rediculous… We did you bother even telling us then?

  • LOL Voice Changer.. give me a break… prolly Eric Lempel and his team all sound like a bunch of gnomes in real life thats why they would think such a feature to be something cool.. i myself have a manly voice which makes your new feature totaly useless

  • @iceolator

    LOL

  • Eric Lempel doesnt know his ass from his elbow…apparently to him a voice changer is a top priority AND obviously most requested feature or it wouldnt have been put in…LOL…what a f’en joke

  • Eric Lempel …302 comments and not one reply from you. It’s been two days.. so that my brother is pretty damn lame. If you are going to help us at least give us a half-assed reply, even if you have to fake it and lie your ass off. No reason why you can’t take a minute out of your busy day to say “I read your comments and questions and currently working on the answers.” That would be enough for me, even if it was total BS. Thanks.

  • Eric doesn’t respond to comments. Maybe he hasn’t figured out how yet. I think he’s busy trying to figure out how to post the “top 10 firmware requests” that he promised he was going to post 3 months ago.

  • So… when putting in new features to the firmware, does it take more RAM? I mean I was kind of hoping they would just start hacking at the RAM to make some room for in-game xmb. Putting in other features just takes up more RAM right?

  • Why would he respond when people are busy calling him an ass… sorry Eric! Keep up the good work!

  • Just a small glitch when doing this upgrade…

I performed the install via the PC method.
After the usual install stuff, I turned it off again
    and turned on.
Loaded “Resistance: fall of man” and it just simply
went blank and locked up. (The dvd did not eject)
So I forced a reboot, ejected the dvd and loaded this time “Dirt” and It played flawlessly.
Switched again to “Resistance..” this time it worked fine.
Movie DVDs -both normal & Blu rays, worked fine.

  • @Loser-fur.
Do you honestly think Eric is responsible solely for these updates? Yeah – one guy sitting around doing all this coding.
In case you hadn’t noticed, these updates don’t come from SCE”A”, they come from SCE”I” as they are a global thing.
If you had the ability for rational thought, you’d be able to sumize that his job with these is to tell us about them, not to make them himself.
Do you go to the market and yell at the stock person because the farmer didn’t deliver your favourite fruit / veg? No, because the only thing you can do is voice your wants and have them pass that on.
Are you this way in real life too? If so, you must be “a joy” to be around with your constant whining about petty stuff.
If not, then why do you revert to nothing but a troll online?
Not a Sony defender so much as I am a fan of reason and rational thought.
Why’s it called “common” sense when it seems so many lack it.
    *sigh*

  • Eric is in charge of operation and not product planning. So he is not responsible for the voice changer release. Given the bad attitude, I doubt anyone would reply. In fact, I would rather Eric respond to other matters instead of wasting his time on rude people who will always find faults anyway.

  • Fix the “not enough memory” error when surfing the net. Some high powered machine…….can’t ever load normal web pages.

  • Lucifer is like gameblows all talk! I could swear he was one who said if 2.00 didn’t have in-game xmb he would sell his system. If the system makes you that unhappy I agree with alot of people who have told you SELL it or just get rid of it.

Doogieman guess you do not know about software engineer or marketing. I would go into detail but I’ll just give ya an example E3 shows a lot of games/software/hardware coming out then/later and some never make pass the promotion stage(graphic cards/long horn (before Vista ^.^). I still have a beta of that OS lol. Home is something many of us are looking forward to but you do not want a glitched version of home or any piece of software, rather they take as much time as they needed to have a well developed piece of software. I’d rather they fix problems arrive compared to giving us other software or additional functionality. Fix codecs/CoD4/assassins’ creed

I’m very pleased with the update, and one thing “99%” did not request in-game xmb, many have, but not everyone, so get it out of your head that all of us said we need in-game xmb and music while playing games. Those are nice suggestions I will not deny that but many (I won’t say most) of us can still play our games without it online/offline. I have had the system since november 19th and still continuing to play without it. Eric keep up the good work and keep up the updates and do not waste a second responding to in-game xmb stuff/rude people, you guys have noted a few times that sony recognizes that it is something many ps3 owners want. It is not the end of gaming, if I do not get it from update 2.2 or 3.5. I will and many others will continue to play regardless and if you can’t play without ingame xmb/putting your own music on then don’t.

  • Hi to everyone:

I’m tired to hear some people always complaining about the in game xmb. If you don’t like what Sony is offering in the PS3, sold your system and buy a banana and sit in front tv a try to play with the banana. People Sony is doing a great effort to bring us the best console system, please stop the non-sense discussion.

Sony keep up and thanks for your effort.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO THE BIG FAMILY OF SONY.

  • Nice update (I especially love the new Visual Player), but I noticed something not mentioned here. In the Backward Compatibility Status Search of the main North American PS3 website, I noticed that, when looking up Final Fantasy XII for playback on the 60 GB PS3, it says that this new firmware update (2.10) fixed something that was previously an error with the game’s playback. I was somewhat surprised by this as I was not sure if Sony was still supporting backwards compatability to that extent in firmware updates. Now that I see that they still are, however, I have one request. I don’t know if any other titles experience this, but the PS1 game Chrono Cross by Square-Enix has a major problem when being played on a PS3. During some battles, when a special skill/Element is used, the game freezes while looping the animation of the character right before the spellcasting. This problem is severe because this also happens whenever the last boss tries to pull off a special move, and it is unavoidable because you cannot fight the last boss without it performing a special move. I have looked around various sites and I have come to learn that this problem affects all people who try to play Chrono Cross on the PS3, not just me. All I ask is for Sony to please fix this problem somehow in a future firmware update. The rest of the game runs beautifully except for this freezing problem, so I don’t think that my request is too extreme. Sony, I beg of you, please address this problem (the Backwards Compatibility Status Search makes no mention of this problem at all), and please fix it. Chrono Cross is one of my favourite games, and I imagine it is a favourite of many others as well. If this were fixed, I would be forever grateful to Sony, and I imagine others would be too. Thank you.

  • nice update
but the network itself need work im gettin tired of playstation network errors i rather you guys just charge for the online services atleast i wont have to worry bout network problems

  • +all the PS2 Ratchet&Clank games don’t play right on PS3??? They sort of stutter. Shame that. Hope they get fixed one day???
    +More PS2 games work now tho ;-P
    Coooooooooooooooooool!!!;)

  • I’m having a problem, I just got the new Update and now my PS3 won’t recognize any Game CD’s that I put in… what’s wrong? how could I fix it? Any response is greatly appreciated.

  • Actually, it won’t recognize any CD at all… :S… Any help?

  • For all of us with a Sony HDTV that doesn’t support 24hz, please make an option to output bluray disc at 48hz. The PS3 is totally capable of outputing this frequency and our Sony TVs are perfectly capable of displaying it as well.
With this sub-option we could truly view bluray discs as they were meant to be viewed. (avoiding the 3:2 pulldown present at 60hz)
    Thank you.

  • Eric. Help. Tried update and failed. Unit said 100% complete, but now only powers on to green light with no disk or network activity. Power on/off cycles do not change status.

Please help. Tried to contact Sony phone support, but apparently whoever is there can’t take my call.

    Are they playing games?

  • Thanks for the update, but when l try to play an avi file it plays like 11 seconds and then freezes.
    Please help.

  • The update is ok, but i use the PS3 for playing Games…the PS2 upscaling is still not that great and it wouldn’t matter that much if it had never been better, but a fact is, that the PS2 upscaling of Firmware 2.0 was much better (fullscreen, better smoothing , less aliasing), so i wish they could bring that back. Sony advertised the BC big and now i feel like i just got ripped of by Sony for buying a more expensive console, that they don’t put much effort in the BC support…for a company that doesn’t offer that many games yet that’s poor…

  • @Juben

you must have me confused with gamesblow (scary) cuz i do recall mentioning me selling my bluray player but certainly NOT because Sony hasnt provided in game anything…i get all that shiznit on the 360…along with a billion other things that Sony doesnt offer

so my bluray player just sits there waiting for the next bluray movie to be released….not my problem the PS3 is only good for bluray in comparison to the 360…the PS3 has crappier features and crappier games…cross platform games are being purchased more for the 360 then PS3…why? cuz the games are better and in higher resolutions

    @solace

LOL…you dont get a response LOL

@everyone else on the defensive for what i say

not my problem that the truth hurts either….you guyz get bent out of shape the minute i open my mouth…why??…cuz what i say is right and you cant accept that for whatever reason…Sony CANT make games in 1080 its ALWAYS 720 even though the reverse sides of games says 1080 compatible when its blatently obvious they arent…false advertising much? is that Sony’s latest ploy to try and get more game sales? lie and say its 1080 compatible when its not…360 doesnt have to lie…even if the game is originally developed in 720…the 360 will upscale it to 1080 with no issues…the point is its upscaled and it looks crisp…way more then i can say for PS3 games…Hmmmmm…UT3 i was hearing for a long time was going to be 1080 and 60 frames per second…LOL…surprise surprise…ITS NOT!!!!…LOL…hmmmmmm lets see…no rumble, xbl rocks the psn anyday…games still suck!!!! 720 not even full HD games….delays up the ass from day one…games due at release that never were…big name exclusive titles that arent so exclusive…so tell me all high and mighty Sony defenders….what exactly makes Sonys bluray player better then the 360??? and dont give me that crap about “oh it takes time” YOU can wait 3-5 yrs for the bluray player that plays crappy games to take shape…in the meantime i’ll be playing games

the truth is there in front of everyones eyes…whether you choose to accept it is another issue in itself…so you defenders go on and keep thanking the big bad Sony for features like your newly implemented “voice changer” at least when your playing your issue plagued warhawk you can sound like a big man or just some stupid ass 12yr old trying to be funny…

cuz when your looking for a REAL HD gaming experience with REAL features…the 360 is the only way to go and for those that dont have one but know a friend that does…before you post in response to me…go to that friends house and ask them to give you the run down on the games and features ask them to throw a game in like COD4 or Bioshock or ANYTHING for that matter and then you’ll see what im talkin about.

and yet still some blinded sony defender will start with the trash talk for what i say(solace for starters)…like i said before…not my problem if you cant accept the tru

  • @Loucifer, why are you wasting your life in a PS3 forum when you hate it so much? Does this mean your 360 games are so dull you need to troll for entertainment elsewhere?

  • Can we please have 2 channel sound output as 2 channel sound for music/video files launched from the XMB. What happens presently is that 2 channel sound is output at the maximum sound setting, i.e. if you have 7.1 selected it will output at that. This prevents any AV amp being able to matrix the sound to the remaining speakers as it thinks it’s already receiving the maximum output.

I don’t want to keep having to go into sound settings and unchecking all the channel options except 2 channel for it to output 2 channel sound correctly!

    Hope that makes sense!

  • @moog

i didnt say i hated my bluray player…thats you assuming but thats ok most others jump to that conclusion right away as well…and my 360 games happen to be quite fine, thanks for your concern though. im about to jump on some COD4 actually when im done typin this up…and lastly if what your referring to “trolling” means something to the effect of me speaking my mind then im guilty, and too damn bad for you that since i too own a PS3 so that means im not goin anywhere either…i know thats a tough pill to swallow but you’ll manage i have faith in ya…you already swallowed the fact that the PS3 is nowhere near par with its competitor…i know its a sore subject with some of you thats why most lash out like a cornered little doggie

fact of the matter is…if the PS3 was any type of competition for the 360 outside of on paper then you wouldnt have to listen to me at all…so you want me to stop?? the day the PS3 can do more then the 360 can is the day i delete my account from here…and since thats no where near the foreseeable future it looks like we have a long road ahead

  • Guys,
where in playstation.com can you download the new firmware?
    i can’t find it !!

  • @Sony
I could at last try this update!

    One big issue though ;

    – X264 AVI files must be supported

Fix it please, otherwise my XviD encoded movies work fine.

x264 codec is by far the greatest codec by now so why not support it ?

  • Hi there Sony.

I requested you look at these games:

    Manhunt (for the PS2)
True Crime – Streets Of New York (for the PS2)

Before the 2.10 update, they wouldn’t work at all on the PS3. Now, Manhunt works…but freezes after the opening cut-scene, so it becomes unplayable.

True Crime Streets Of New York has major issues with the controls. They work for a minute but then just stop working and your player wont move. I’ve tried multiple times but it just isn’t working.

Thankyou for your efforts so far, but can these issues be looked into and hopefully fixed by the next update?

Many thanks, have a great christmas,
    Jay

  • i av not got BD utility data box dozany one no y

  • How about a screen capture tool that lets you capture video game footage.

  • Good news for WRT54G fans! On the 18th Linksys released a firmware update that seems to fix the problems associated with the media server not connecting or disconnecting frequently or causing the PSN to disconnect. At least, I had these problems and I read others had these problems too. I’ve been testing out the new firmware for the last two hours and have had no disconnections whatsoever! Now if only Sony can figure out why most of my VC-1 files have no audio, I can use my 360 less and not have to replace it for the 6th time. :)

  • oh That’s for v.5 or v.6 of the router. I’m not so sure about any others. I have a v.6.

  • How do we give Sony info on what we want in the Sony PS3 OS for features and stuff? Where can we s4end this info cus it really sucks in a lot of ways and NEEDS remote control shutdown like the 360 shuts off the controller after 10 minutes of not being used. The ps3 just runs the battery out. This really pisses me off that sony isn’t that smart.

  • I would like to express my disappointment with the revised point system for patch 1.2 if on defense you only earn 2 points for killing the flag carrier and if you survive another 2 points for helping to recover the flag. This creates an environment were no one wants to defend because they are not rewarded for it. At least make it so the longer the flag is out the longer it takes to return the more points are earned the first two are in place we just need the points to go with it. Here’s hoping the 1.3 patch fixes CTF further.

  • what in the hell are you talking about enforcer? yer posting has nothing to do with the firmware.

  • I’m liking where this road is taking us but it feels we are moving too slow :)

i mean for a hardware this powerful and a company this big how come it can not produce a nice home entertainment interface and functionality that is simple and atleast as good as my old xbox1.

Could it be so hard to atleast have a decent samba sharing or what it is called so that i could connect to my shared folder on vista instead of going through the silly windows media player shizzle?

Could it be so hard to have support for codecs that have been around since the stone age ;D
I can not even play my wma movies right now (old persian movies).

How about xvid ? just cause pirates use it does it mean it is tabu? how about water, i’m sure they drink it so am i allowed to drink water ?

I’m greatful that sony is giving us xvid but right now it is in such a bad shape that i would rather not use it.

I got an old xbox with media center which rocks but i hope one wonderful day i can replace it with my ps3.

I wish also that Sony could atleast let the linux folkz get access to the GPU , then i’m sure we would see “progress” on the mediacenter front.

Have a great christmas u all.

  • This is a very flawed update, before 2.1 I could stream my high definition MPEG 2 transport files straight off an external drive from my laptop through my network to my PS3 and watch HD home movies, both edited and raw straight from the camera. I stupidly downloaded 2.1 and voila suddenly all my HD clips and home movies are “corrupt.” After banging my head against the wall for hours, I called Sony support, and their brilliant response was, “the update is causing your files no longer to be read.” Really? I took the SAME “corrupt” files off my network and saved them directly onto the PS3’s HDD, and presto, they play just fine. This is obviously a terrible solution because I have tons of HD video and can’t possibly store it all on the PS3 (nor would I want to). SONY FIX THIS PROBLEM this is ridiculous, updates should add functionality, not take it away.

  • please fix
lpcm audio tracks no longer play properly. they used to convert automatically to ac3 or dts in old firmware, now only the rear channels are playing. I cant hear any dialog.

  • Sony must add an auto shut off controller feature like microsoft does in their superior console the 360. i am sick and freaking tired of sony running out my batteries because they don’t have it auto shut off the controller after 10 minutes like microsoft does with their 360 superior console. sony must stop breaking things in their updates like with not playing a lot of videos anymore. i have the stupid sony OS shows me a still frame from movies over the network and it won’t play the video. how in the hell can you see the movie but not play it? how stupid. it says data is corrupted for most videos even though they are not. so it wont play them. Sony, yer sure pissing me off. and yer sure pissing off a lot of others. get it together guys.

  • @343 buggs1 a

rather than sony release a patch for turning your pad off because YOU forgot maybe YOU can remember to turn it off hardly worth moaning about

  • davie, how sad you are. No, it’s a necessary thing. Microsoft does it and this is how it NEEDS to be, not should be, but NEED. I never forget, but it’s a curtesy thing and a necessary feature.

I also want you to know i don’t appreciate your cander with me. You don’t need to be a jerk.

  • Hey Eric, I am sick of playing a game on the PS3 in which it needs to update and takes ages to download!

Heres a good suggestion for an update. Have a Game Collection within the XMB in the Game Section which records which games you have and when connected to PSN, it informs the user just like when the PS3 finds a new Firmware, a new game update for either Game Data Utility or a patch for the Games you have in your collection (like v1.10 for Heavenly Sword, v1.20 for Warhawk and 3.10 for Motorstorm). Allow them to background download it but whilst it downloads you disable them from playing the game that is downloading the update. This would make life so much easier and make the experience much better than looking at a Percentage Bar going slowly when you want to play Gran Turismo 5 Prologue or Resistance which takes ages to update.

I would like the PS3 to also background download Firmware Updates as they are slow and why allow users to play a game, watch a movie or view photos while the update is being downloaded. When it does finish downloading, inform the user of completion and tell the user to press O or X to quit what they are doing to proceed with the Firmware Update. Makes sense? Its a good idea and will solve the problem of playing the waiting game which I don’t want on PS3 in terms of downloading updates.

Thanks for the recent updates but a little convenience additions such as “In Game XMB” which I know your working on and the suggested ones mentioned above to the firmware update would really be great. Thank you for the recent updates and keep up the good work!

  • Jeff Rubenstein, I only have one request. Can you please add a voting mechanism so that the users can vote to hide messages, and ban users on this forum. There are clearly trolls on this blog that no one, except perhaps the Sony staff, needs to see. You can choose to unhide them if necessary. For instance, posts by Loucifers are generally false and can be ignored safely. There is always the “Contact Us” page for him to get help directly from Sony. So I don’t think we will cut him/her out because of the voting mechanism. Thanks much.

  • A good idea for the next update would be RSS video feeds. As you continue to expand codecs support, this becomes a no-brainer.

  • how to update the latest version of firmware? and after that can I still play my game in the MS?

  • divX, at least ! really good, since it also reads quite all of my xvid video … But now, i’m jealous of my PSP … I want radio player ^^

well done, Sony … Keep going !
