GDC Tuesday: PlayStation Blogger Lounge Day 1 Highlights

Posted by Jeff Rubenstein // Social Media Manager

PlayStation.Blog @ GDC

Hey all, hope you’re enjoying the GDC festivities so far. Day 1 of the Sony Blogger Lounge has been a success, with press from around the world getting their hands on games like flOw PSP, Secret Agent Clank, echochrome, and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. Big shout out to those who have stopped by on Day 1, like bloggers from Level Up, IGN, Gamervision, 1up, MTV Multiplayer, EuroGamer, Gametrailers, Ars Technica, Destructoid (minus the Robot, regrettably), PC World, GameDaily, TotalPlayStation.com, Gamervision, and many more.

Slightly more thanks to those who documented what they saw, like Joystiq and IGN. ;-)

Things will pick up noticeably tomorrow, as we get the developers in here for one on one interviews, so expect a ton of coverage from the outlets listed above (and certainly even more than that). We’ll also have the cameras on, asking the devs those questions you want answered.

Not able to make it to GDC or want check out more of what’s happening in The Lounge? You can check out our Twitter and Flickr accounts or find out more details here.

Tideas  |  February 19th, 2008 at 8:20 pm

hey Jeff, this is Tony from Project Tideas. Think there’s a way you can help me get into the Home Beta? I would like to report the progress update on it.

Thanks

tripletags  |  February 19th, 2008 at 8:20 pm

thanks for being direct about what to expect this week jeff but keep in mind that there have been times where kaz himself has said something and the next day its the opposite ;). Im just saying .. hello from tripletags.com where we await Home with baited breath!

makingmusic476  |  February 19th, 2008 at 8:22 pm

Wait, so the shirt was just a tease? Not cool. :| I got really excited about the possibility of in-game XMB finally being unveiled this week.

Also, is this “something good to show” a Resistance 2 trailer by any chance? :D

mpnjdevil  |  February 19th, 2008 at 8:25 pm

Hey Jeff, i just wanted to say that you are doing a hell of a job, thanks, you are doing great; keep it up man…

105

Stoffinator  |  February 19th, 2008 at 8:28 pm

Hey Jeff Rubenstein, can I get one of those shirts? Being I’m not in the US, I’m in Canada, I can’t enter any contests.

106

Prolog  |  February 19th, 2008 at 8:32 pm

Even though us Canadians generally get neglected in ways like overpriced PSN demos and addons as well as contests, I still think your doing a great job, Jeff. I always love reading your blogs and take on the information at hand. Also, I think you do a great job in responding to the community as their comment on your posts.

Keep it up, man!

You know how much we want in game xmb?

According to VGCHARTZ, the PS3 destroyed the wii this week in the U.S in sales, and outsold the xbox 360 here as well. Thats quite and accomplishment.

All you guys need is IN GAME XMB and or something else, and sony would have destroyed everyone.

Blu-ray has won as well.

108

TheHakku  |  February 19th, 2008 at 8:34 pm

I agree. You guys should really put out those In-Shirt XMB tees. I would definitely buy one.

109

tibbar110  |  February 19th, 2008 at 8:35 pm

Since the PS3 was released those of us with HDTVs that only support 480i/p & 1080i have been left in SDTV for those games released in 720p only. Unfortunately, this involves quite a few games. Hopefully a firmware update, will resolve this. Recently Turok was patched by the developer to accomplish this task. My question is, what about Resistance, Motorstorm, Burnout, Spider-man 3, Heavenly Sword, and etc.? We need a system-wide patch that scales all games regardless of the native resolution. The 360 currently offers this feature, and the PS3 is superior in every other way.

rojo7  |  February 19th, 2008 at 8:44 pm

man, i would really love that in-game xmb jeff
but nice joke, it has a nice ring to my ears :)

Kenshin001  |  February 19th, 2008 at 8:46 pm

Shirts huh? What a mockery. I’m sorry but Sony really needs to deliver. Playstation owners have been waiting and waiting and thus far have been given little but empty promises. No in game XMB, no Home, one exclusive FPS from launch, half a racing game, barely one JRPG, some countries still do not even have a Playstation store. 2008 and we are still waiting for the big thing. I enjoy my PS3 but looking at the features and more importantly games on the other console I’m beginning to think Sony are way behind the eight ball. At least the PS3 is reliable. Sony really need to step up to the plate, give a concrete timetable of games and features which will be released starting from NOW (it’s GDC!) instead of continually leading people on with allusions to sometime future possibilities.

THATPSPGUY  |  February 19th, 2008 at 8:53 pm

those achievement photos of sonyguys, well I took it and shopped it to make it alot brighter and clearer to see. I think those are real. Someone said because the warhawk int he background looked off center. Hmm custom theme? no, just the angle that the person took the picture from. Asd someone who spends hours on end wiht photoshop, I can tell you that the image is indeed real. There were even reflections of sonyguy in the screen, but i took em out of mine. I can also read whcih achievement they got.
here’s the shopped version.

Hello everyone!!! This is my first time on this blog and i would like to say that i think the XMB will be coming out before home which is scheduled for next month. I also think that PS Home and the XMB are two different things when it comes to firmware or update. Please Jeff, let us know like maybe tomorrow about home and xmb. Don’t get wrong, i appreciate the time u take to write back and i love Sony Playstation as a brand, but give us details at least. We Know u would like to keep the secrets and surprises to urself, so u can exploit them and not no other source. But details would be nice. Well anyway thanx for ur time and i am a very proud PS3,PSP. PS2, and Ps1 owner. Keep up the good work.

114

jerseydevil83  |  February 19th, 2008 at 9:07 pm

Bring XMB please. MY PSN ID IS Jerseydevil83.

115

jerseydevil83  |  February 19th, 2008 at 9:10 pm

Does anyone have any news on gdc

116

Sento  |  February 19th, 2008 at 9:11 pm

Not sure if your holding shirts still Jeff – but I’m a Medium and I’m constructing a rubenstein idol as we speak. haha

117

Torgo  |  February 19th, 2008 at 9:18 pm

I take a 3XL Jeff :-)

I hope you get a hangover Tomorrow. I’m quite jealous.

118

odz  |  February 19th, 2008 at 9:21 pm

If need be Jeff, I can take a few of those floor model PS3s of your hands when everything is said and done……ok just 1 then….ok ok I’ll keep saving.

GTA4 is Judgement day.

119

lennygundam14  |  February 19th, 2008 at 9:29 pm

@112 that looks pretty legit alright.

120

rojo7  |  February 19th, 2008 at 9:31 pm

so im sorry jeff for this but i’m feeling really expressive today.

so the joke goes like this?

Hey guys, lets make in game xmb shirts and then not announce anything, wouldnt that be funny for all the people who bought our console? Just mess with them a bit? Make them think its coming, but not say anything..

Good times messing with us jeff!

121

kagenish  |  February 19th, 2008 at 9:34 pm

when are we going to hear some good info dealing with the ps3. like home open beta or maybe the long awaiting In0game XMB that we all want. CAN I GET ONE OF THOSE [DELETED] THE YOU GUYS HAVE AT GDC THEY COOL?:)

122

kagenish  |  February 19th, 2008 at 9:56 pm

some news of home open beta and In-Game XMB in the up coming weeks. I WANT A SHIRT THAT YOU GUESS HAVE AT GDC THEY LOOK COOL.

123

gigakain  |  February 19th, 2008 at 9:57 pm

Sweet stuff. Are those In-Shirt XMB shirts a hint at an update to be released this week for the PS3?

It’s us being cheeky. It’s a developer’s conference, not hardware or firmware, so no announcements on that front this week.
—————————————————————

Wow, yeah that is such a funny joke. You know mocking your own customers with your witty shirts…

You know what else is funny? The fact that there is still no In-Game XMB.

This is NOT the kind of crap we need to be seeing from Sony.. its obviously a poke at the many vocal people that have been fighting to make Sony understand how important the feature is.

Its this same attitude that they have taken all along on In-Game XMB they dont see what the big deal is and they feel we are all just too passionate about silly things like… hmm you know, being able to message a friend In-Game? Why would anyone wanna do that? *sarcasm

124

macdrizzle  |  February 19th, 2008 at 9:57 pm

So disappointed to hear there will not be any Socom: Confrontation news. At least let us know the game is still in the works.

erico316  |  February 19th, 2008 at 10:02 pm

well i have a game idea and im been trying to get someone help me get it onxbox live or the playstation store. This is my first game i ever made but i believe this game can be succeful on the playstation store then it could be over xbox live. This game is an rpg with a story line so deep and rich.I also blieve with the size limit on the playstore being limitless that it could work best on it.You have any advice for an 19 year old game developer trying to get his great game in the playstation store maybe u can help me if u cannt i understand.I would also like a in shirt xmb extra large.Hopely u answer back

126

Voozi  |  February 19th, 2008 at 10:05 pm

rojo7 it’s just a joke, I found it pretty funny as did many PS3 owners, no need to get all worked up over it, we all know in game xmb is coming with the release of home *throws ninja stars taking out the PR ninja’s stalking Jeff* right Jeff! ;-)

But looking foward to hearing more about what you guys have in store for GDC. Few more years from now once I have my degree in C.S. – Game Development I’ll hopefully join the ranks of game developers and will be able to attend GDC =D

127

Jeigh  |  February 19th, 2008 at 10:10 pm

This is part of the problem with responding to all those little questions- they only lead to comments complaining about the fact that there’s nothing to report. They’d rather hear groundless speculation and rumors than the cold-hard truth. Can’t even take a frigging joke after putting you through all that whining and spamming. I respect the position you put yourself in, Jeff. Stay strong.

128

Voozi  |  February 19th, 2008 at 10:18 pm

Oh yea forgot to add in this in so sorry for double post/comment, but you should umm nab some of that GDC schwag to include in a contest of some sort with a “schwag bag” prize containing those shirts and other assortments? =P Since there seems to be a lot of buzz going around the PS Community about wanting those shirts, so should have a contest of some sort and make us fight till the…I mean have a friendly non violent contest to win the prize(s).

129

Nightmare142  |  February 19th, 2008 at 10:27 pm

Hey jeff, i would like to know if in-game XMB would be coming out before 6-12 months? i know you can’t give out a release date, :) but it would be nice to know it will come out before that time.
and i really like to get one of those in-shirt XMB T-shirts ;)

130

rahstar2003  |  February 19th, 2008 at 10:55 pm

I’ve always found those comments about sony being “arrogant” to be un-warranted and false, until now. WOW, being cheeky about something that has been whined about, talked about, and complained about as much as in-game xmb and home. You and sony owe your fans an appology for that slap in the face, SERIOUSLY! Very unprofessional. I know your reading this too.

131

marcindpol  |  February 19th, 2008 at 10:56 pm

agree

132

xbandaidx  |  February 19th, 2008 at 11:19 pm

Some people find the t-shirt a joke, while others don’t. When coming to a decision if you should make a t-shirt and there is even a slight hint that it might not go well with everyone, you shouldn’t make it.

You can all go ahead and cry at the people who are whining about it, but many have good reasons for what they feel. It’s been over a year now, and quite frankly for a feature that should of been in PS3 when it was shipped is a bit ridiculous.

133

Dracuss  |  February 19th, 2008 at 11:38 pm

Man stupid work preventing me from checking this during the day. A bunch of my co workers all have PS3 so as a joke a couple weeks ago I made a quick paint bitmap wallpaper for my work computer that says “In-Work XMB Please”, I’d be kind for a Day if I got my hands on one of these shirts :(

Love the humor and the responses to the comments here, keep it up guys! :P

134

snobrder218  |  February 19th, 2008 at 11:38 pm

Hey Jeff! Great to hear GDC is going well!

I’m so jealous though that I don’t have an opportunity to get one of those shirts! I never received my GAP shirt too :(. I always get the shaft with these sorts of things.

I’m so proud to be a PS3 owner with all the hit games coming, Blu-ray winning the format war, and just so much more. Screw Obama, Hillary, McCain, and whomever else, I say…

PS3 08!!!

135

greyham  |  February 19th, 2008 at 11:47 pm

For a publicly traded company, it still amazes me how they can have such a brazen attitude towards their customers. Tasteless…that’s my opinion on the T-shirt. How long will you guys continue to keep people in the dark like mushrooms and foster these feelings of arrogance?

136

Thunderstruck  |  February 20th, 2008 at 12:10 am

Interesting slogan for a shirt. I wonder if Phil Harrison will show up with a shirt that says “I’m still HOMEless” for good measure.

137

DIsmael85  |  February 20th, 2008 at 12:18 am

I guess I can relate to what a lot of people are feeling like on here. I have been with Sony’s Playstation since day 1 PSone. I spent a lot on my PS3 and those features mentioned are some of the ones I have been seriously looking forward to. I’m not one to complain to much about things and I have a lot of patience, but come on this has been rumored and has had its rounds on the net, it’s just about time Sony just give everyone what they want. They are what make that company. Stop shaking the lollipops in front of us and share.

138

Stealth  |  February 20th, 2008 at 1:02 am

Hi there jeff, I was wondering about the Tuner DVR/TiVo Service Topic. It’s a very interesting idea especially for all of the MLG SOCOM Affiliated GameBattles Users who really could use something like this meaning, an ability to Record Each Online Match and Send it in to GB Staff through the PSNs’ Mail System.

Is there any light you can shed on this ? If it’s deffinately coming out this year, you can comment “No Comment” LOL.

Anything would be awesome !

139

wocyob  |  February 20th, 2008 at 1:05 am

ugh i wanna be there :(
but really i want a shirt lol and i need some info or maybe a screen shot on how in-game XMB looks like

also i love this blog

140

Grym  |  February 20th, 2008 at 1:35 am

I like the T-shirt joke.

I have some hope for “real” games at GDC and not just only PSN games. Please, we have waited forever for news about Sonys 1st party games. Like The Getaway, 8 days, White Knight Story and so on. Just some teaser screenshots would be enough to reassure us that they are on their way. :(

That’s really too bad about no Home/XMB announcement this week. But I am sure we will know more soon anyway.

141

destructo888  |  February 20th, 2008 at 1:45 am

What’s with the shirts? I thought Sony would be trying to make people forget what makes the PS3 inferior to the ‘other’ console. Not put it on shirts!

hmm I just don’t understand there logic sometimes. If anything reminding people of what the PS3 lacks will just make people sell/not buy a PS3.

142

Grym  |  February 20th, 2008 at 1:53 am

destructo888

We all know it’s coming. So it’s not that bad.
Why should they make us forget about what PS3 lacks? Isn’t that like deceiving?

143

zapruder  |  February 20th, 2008 at 1:55 am

Jeff;
explain these pictures please ;-P

144

destructiondude  |  February 20th, 2008 at 1:57 am

We are tired of waiting for Home to be released why dont you just release it?

145

destructiondude  |  February 20th, 2008 at 1:59 am

I have waited from GDC07 and no its GDC08 and there is still no sign of Home full release/public beta being released why can you just release it already?

146

zapruder  |  February 20th, 2008 at 2:04 am

haven’ t seen a half decent explanation on those picts, people like nr.91. are talking from their asshole clearly.

oh and Jeff.. I remember this XMB/Home talk and wasn’t it you who said wait till GDC??

147

zapruder  |  February 20th, 2008 at 2:11 am

well post nr.112 is on my side, i’m a photoshop user to, it’s my job and these picts me look real.. so Jeff I’m thinking either you are gagged or not informed :-P drop a hint will ya?! like a T-Shirt.. sigh.

148

Tom-stealth  |  February 20th, 2008 at 2:24 am

Jeff you need to ask Sony or whoever in charge of the PSN classics to get some FF7 on there. Its important. Im a huge FF Fan and if that ever made its way to the classics i say lots of PSP owners would be im bliss.

Oh and ask Sony when Play TV or whatever that TV Turner thing for the PS3 is going to hit North America cause I already love that feature but i can’t get it… :(

149

thefjk  |  February 20th, 2008 at 2:54 am

Just add loads and loads of coverage! And please have a giveaway/competition thing for the T-shirts if you have any left… both US and UK please! :D
