Breaking the Silence - New SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation Screens!

+ Posted by David Seymour // Design Director, Slant Six Games

In anticipation of the Confrontation cover story in the May issue of EGM, 1UP has posted two new screenshots. The initial reaction has been positive, and the dev team is really excited that the world can finally see some of their hard work. This has also been a huge relief to SealTeam-6, who has the unenviable job of telling SOCOM’s huge, hungry fan base every week that:

  • a) yes we are still working on the game, and
  • b) no, there is no new information we can share at this time

No more! The flood of information is coming in the May issue of EGM. As to the hundreds of private messages and emails that we get every week, we read and appreciate all of them. Whether it’s a quick note to inquire

“What the [heck] is taking you [fine fellows] sooooo long??”

or an encouraging

“Please don’t [mess] up the new SOCOM!!”

we feel the love. The overwhelming message is that you want Confrontation to be great, and you want it soon. So to address those points, the game is looking, playing and feeling better than ever and we are working hard to get it in your hands as soon as possible. Hang in there, Confrontation is coming!

As for the just-released screens, here is a quick comment about each screen to address the flurry of forum posting that they have caused.

socom

This is indeed Crossroads, the most fan-requested SOCOM map. This shot is taken from our new OTS camera, but the player is backed up into a wall here so it might look a bit confusing. This is the right in front of the SEAL spawn, looking down the street in the direction of the warehouse. The commando in the upper right is aiming a M87ELR, and his teammate by the tree is wielding a G36-C. The mercenary charging up the street is firing with an F90.

socom2

This is a brand new map, which has a 16 player core area and an expanded footprint for 32 player matches. This ruined shopping center is a great sniping location, and is a hotly contested control point in our internal sessions. The player here is aiming an M60-E3; eagle-eyed fans will also spot an AK-47, a USAS-12 and a SASR sniper rifle in this shot.

Also, SealTeam-6 requested that I specifically iterate this point “for the record”, so here we go:

There is an option to use classic SOCOM camera! It looks and feels like the original classic camera!

Repeat after me…

There is an option to use classic SOCOM camera! It looks and feels like the original classic camera!
There is an option to use classic SOCOM camera! It looks and feels like the original classic camera!….

Finally, I would like to welcome aboard the new community manager for all things SOCOM, Abigale. She is going to be working to keep the communication flowing between the SOCOM community and the dev team.

Cheers

Hmmm, never played a SOCOM game, but I have a good feeling this will be my first - if not just to see what all the fuss is over it’s classic camera.

Sweet it’s nice to get some info about the screen shots and the game on here. Now it would be nice if we got an estimated release date from Sony or Slant6 soon.

I loved Tactical Strike, can’t wait for this Socom from Slant Six. I personally found the old setup that Zipper used in the original series to be too archaic, glad to see the series is progressing with Slant Six’s help. Is this going to be like Warhawk and GT5 Prologue (i.e. digital and retail distribution). Any clue on pricing, I am going to assume its 39.99 like Warhawk and GT5 Prologue. Is there going to be a special edition like with the Warhawk headset retail bundle? Any changes since the inception of Confrontation till now (i.e. the changes from Sony Gamer Day 07′ to now) Is the game going to support 1080i/p? How many people can play on one PS3 online, similar to 4 player slit screen online in Warhawk? Any Public Beta info, I remember hearing something at E3 07′ about a beta. Home integration I assume is also included (ala Uncharted, Warhawk and Resistance’s rooms).

Hi there,

can we have some technical information about how the online infrastructure is set up (peer-to-peer? dedicated servers? matchmacking?) and the frame rate you are running this beauty at?

Thanks a lot for bringing SOCOM back.

Hopefully SOCOM Confrontation tops SOCOM3 and goes back to SOCOM2 play style, then add in some throwbacks to things like the original abandoned, blizzard and desert glory along with other old maps would make this by far the best online shooter going.

@ Playstation Blog team:

you should write in every post header if the game is for ps3 or psp.

It isn’t always obvious for everybody (for every game).

Why can’t the info be posted here first instead of EGM? I mean this is the PS blog is it not?

Anywho, I’m really looking forward to this game. It looks fantastic since we first saw it a while back. Thanks so much for giving us a new camera and the option to return to the classic SOCOM style. I hope there’s a ton of maps released with it along with a ton of weapons. Is there any chance for character customization? Looks gorgeous.

If you look at the full sized screenshots, the shadows look much better on this game compared to other PS3 games where they’re all choppy around the edges. Good job.

I about near had a heart attack, ran downstairs and told my roommate. you swear I won the lotto. Well with news like this, I may as well have. This is by far the BEST news so far. SOCOM ROCKS THE SHOOTER WORLD! This is going to be so bad a$$, I can’t wait to play this game. like I said, summer vacation canceled this year now!

THIS IS A MUST HAVE!!!! Abigale, can we get some new footage?
I have all Socoms to date.

Thanks, but no thanks. I’m one of the pdb’s (poor dumb _astards) that bought “Combined Assault”. That game has more bugs in it than 6 lbs of chameleon caca and has yet to see any patches.

I will NEVER purchase another zipper game EVER. Shame on you zipper.

Too bad PsycoEddie can’t read very well as this IS NOT A ZIPPER Interactive game. Read the article before bashing a totally different company. Slant Six are the forces behind this chapter of Socom. You are a real douche, go back to your cave troll. You make yourself look really dumb. The main reason you hate it is because you were probably one of them code nine peoples( the hackers) and got banned.

That’s another thing Abigale, How is SS going to combat the “Glitchers”? This is the main upset that CA and Socom 3 were hit hard with.

Please make the servers tight as hell. 9 I know I know it’s the PS3, unhackable) well they always seem to do it.

The OTS camera does look very good and interesting. I have played Socom since number 2 through CA and loved all of them. I AM A TRUE SOCOM FAN. I will try out the OTS camera first and see if i like it and if i dont ill go back to the Third person camera. Slant-Six the game looks freaking great. I just suscribed to EGM today even though it takes 4-8 weeks to get the first issue but whatever. I LOVE YOU SS and SOCOM. (IM NOT GAY).
