Firmware v2.20 bringing BD-Live to PS3

380 0

Hi again everyone. Here’s a quick preview of the next PLAYSTATION 3 system software update coming up in the next few days. Firmware v2.20, introduces a number of features to further enhance your PLAYSTATION 3 as the hub of your entertainment center.

Most notably, the update enables the PS3 to support Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0, also known as BD-Live. You can connect now to the Internet while playing discs that support BD-Live to obtain additional content and special features. These features vary from disc to disc, and will keep your BD discs fresh with new content and in some cases exclusive content only accessible to owners of BD-Live enabled discs. On April 8th Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release The 6th Day and Walk Hard on Blu-ray; these titles will be among the first to take advantage of BD-Live. With this update, the PLAYSTATION 3 becomes the first Blu-ray player on the market with BD-Live functionality.

Here are some of the other new features/enhancements that will be included in Firmware v2.20:

  • The ability to copy PS3 Music and Photo playlists to a PSP system. We introduced the ability to create Music and Photo playlists on the PS3 in firmware update v2.0. Now you can easily export your playlists to your PSP.
  • You can now play DivX and WMV format files that are over 2 GB. In addition, you can now display subtitles when viewing DivX files.
  • Resume Play – begin playing a DVD or BD disc from the point where you previously stopped it, even if you eject the disc and insert a different movie or game.
  • Use your PSP as a remote control to play back your music files on your PS3 without turning on your TV.
  • The Internet browser now displays some web pages faster. In addition [Save Target] has been added as an option under file. This option lets you save a file that is linked to a web page to your PS3 hard drive or storage media.

There are a few other tweaks and upgrades included in v2.20 – we’ll provide more specifics as the update is about to go live.

  • Cool. If you can transport playlists to your PSP, then i guess that also means the PSP will be getting an update soon too. 4.00

Sony: Please improve Remote Play for better video quality and response time. Thanks!

  • Maybe un-game XMB in the next update…

  • ^in

  • Well, I love the update. Great, as long as in-game you-know-what is on the horizon at some point.

Any how, I also want to give you guys some credit for giving us this preview news. It doesn’t hurt to do that. We love being kept in the loop.

If someone were to give us an in-depth “state of play” of the two biggies, Home and i-g-xmb, I imagine many PS3 owners would throw Sony a bone and give you all a break for at least telling us. Even if it’s just the issues involved.

Once again, I love the sound of this update and keep up the good work!

  • You know what would be nice. The ability proceed with downloading of PSN items when you decide to shutdown the PS3. And when it’s done, the PS3 shutsdown or go to standby mode.

  • Cool PSP is getting less dust after this update.

  • stay tunned for more gr8 stuff!

  • Agree with comment #5. More audio/visual compatibility please, I want to playback 5.1 audio without having to encode it into AAC. you can utilize Dolby TrueHD on blu-ray, but why not standard DD 5.1 on mpeg files?

showing the title of the currently inserted disc would also be a nice feature (instead of Playstattion 2 Format Title / BD-MV).

  • “The Internet browser now displays some web pages faster.”

FINALLY! Also, I hope it has newer plug-ins, etc.

  • SONY please add more codec support!

    .MKV codec is a must!!

And more support for .Divx, .Xvid, .AVI and .WMV

I find that a lot of WMV and Divx files still can not be played on the PS3!

SONY if you want to make a lot of people very happy add more codec support!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_codecs

  • Ok. I know this is gonna sound like a nerd stuff BUT ¿Support for subtitles for video like str. ssa., etc. ? ¿WHEN?

Like i said, nerd stuff BUT an important step for anyone who IS NOT

    A) English dude who wanna see movies and tv shows with his wife who don’t understand english.

    B) Deaf people

In the meantime a simple multimedia hardrive can do that and a lot more things.

People still asks why my PS3 is NOT my media center.

C’mon SONY, you can do it better.

  • DTS-HD MA decoding !!!!!

    When?

  • Soz. The B) Should be read as :

B: OR IS a deaf person.

    But you get the point.

  • – A clock on the PS button menu?

  • The one option I’d like to see implemented in the PS3 is the option to adjust the viewable screen. Warhawk has this in the options and I’d like this to become a system option that way every game would benefit. I have a DLP TV that is projecting 52 instead of of 50 and this would help me without having to try to pay a tv guy to come and try to adjust my tv.

  • As many have stated, this is a great update. I only hope that the browser updates include an updated version of adobe flash v9.

If these enhancements to the browser allow for improved javascript, css and DHTML then it should be possible for me to use web based document editors as well (like google docs) or image sharing/printing services like shutterfly.com .

Also is this browser based on Access netfront 3.5 and if so will we be seeing widgets soon (like a clock and local weather widget) :
    http://www.access-company.com/products/netfrontmobile/browser/widgets.html

In total, this update should keep people happy (if it includes an improved Adobe flash) until Home, ingame XMB and Skype come out for the PS3.

The question is, how soon will the 2.20 update be released ! …….Today ?

P.s. whoelse @50: I think the limitation of the remote play quality is that the PSP is limited by its antiquated 802.11b wireless card. I hope a new PSP is in development that would improve this limitation hence allowing a minimum of 802.11g (this is why i did not buy the recently revised PSP, it really was not an improvement).

  • One thing sony seem to forget is that people buy this system to play games, i have been a sont fan for a very long time i even have a PS logo tatto, but i am really getting fed up, why is it we still dont have in-game xmb, im playing a game i get a message i have to quit teh game check the message then go back to game, all it seems we always get is TBD, or later this year I mean how lond do we have to put up with this, if you cant do it just say so……you dont realize you are loosing people to that other company who there main focus is on GAMES and COMMUNITY…oh that’s right we will have home soon, later this year TBD

  • WHERES HOME AND IN-GAME XMB!!!!!!!! ROFL J/k Damn good update sony BTW i want a full list of vids with BD 2.0 PLZ :D but all in all hell yeah …SONY may i ask are the updates (firmware gonna be more frequent????and can we have some details on the facelift on the PSn ??? but yeah as promised a good comment :D see yall this thursday

  • I’d like an update to include a little more functionality into the messaging of friends. In particular I’d like to be able to attach more than just a picture to a mail.

Wouldn’t it be cool if there was a wee buffer that when you access the XMB you could save the last 30seconds of play to a small video file. Then should you have had a funny or indeed a fantastic moment occurr in your game, you could quickly save it and forward it to your friends, or post it somewhere. Perhaps as a moving picture in your Home?

Another wonderful music visualisation would be most welcome.

  • Do you people even see how we are treated, why does it seem that we are always secondary, we the gamers have been asking for in-game xmb since release and there is no excuse why we dont have it, just say it cant bee done we would appreciate that, well i know I would, i know what they will say TBD, or the best one coming later this year so that can mean 12/31/09

  • Nice making up for the one last week I see!!!!! I listen to my PSP around the house threw my PS3 all the time (with out TV ON). I want to see the new feature and how is it better? Plus get someone on The XMedia Bar and HOME!

  • @ corvettes_82
Currently there are only two titles with BD Live / Profile 2.0: Saw IV and War
    http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/12/07/lionsgate-sony-readying-bd-live-enabled-flicks-for-january/

    those are already out!

Sony Pictures today announced that they are releasing in April two more titles!

    http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/03/20/sony-pictures-schedules-two-bd-live-releases-for-april/

That will make 4 titles overall.

  • Like already say:

    – More compatibility with video (DivX/ Xvid/MPEG-4, H.264 level 5.1, ogg, flac, ape)
    – More compatibility with format (ogm, mkv, ..)
    – Support for subtitles (srt,sub, …)
    – Better retro compatibility with PS2/PSX games, and ps2 videos.
    – Use RSX to apply AA in the PS2/PSX games.
    – Enable RSX in Linux for video acceleration
    – Support for the eye camera in Linux

  • I’m sorry fans, to be venting like this, I am just very frustrated, i seems something that i man teh wrong choice, that other company may have some system issues rrod, but look at what they give there gamers and im sorry but Home they can keep that s**t i like meeting people in real life, it seem they still dont understand what gamers want, more content in ps store, adn in-games messaging with those that what else do we need nothing, i dont want to have to log into home to play chess, play pool etc, they keep missing the point, he we just added a bubblr machiene are you serious who cares

  • Hi Eric, any idea if we will be able to add subtitles to our DivX and WMV format files in the future?

  • Hi Eric, any idea if we will be able to add subtitles to the DivX and WMV format files in the future?

  • While I will agree that HOME is a long time and coming I must say this is going to be a killer update! Save target feature in the web browser?! Divix files over 2GB can be played?

On top of that they expanded the PSP, and PS3s interactivity a lot! Go Sony! I will be testing these new PSP-PS3 features after release! I love this machine!

  • I cant take a piss or have a drink without knowing if one of my friends has sent me a message, you tell me if that is a good thing!! Most of the time i have to get my cell phone and phone my friends to organize what we are doing and vice versa!!
You tell me if after i’ve spent over 600 euro’s and one year and 4 months after the console was realesed I can’t send or recieve message’s in game!
I bet bet that the people that run this blog and SCEA and SCEE can’t Belive it!!

  • The update sounds great. Thanks for the info

  • I hate to be the stickler, and I love the update but why can’t we get the features we want added before this stuff or in addition to this stuff?

    It’s getting old now.

  • @ ozzyuno
couldn’t have said it any better myself

  • @ ozzyuno , couldn’t have said it any better myself

  • like some of the others have mentioned.

    please add
    – More compatibility with video (DivX/ Xvid/MPEG-4, X.264, H.264 level 5.1, ogg, flac, ape), quicktime, realmedia.
    – More compatibility with fileformats (ogm, mkv, mp4)
    – Support for subtitles (srt, sub, …)
    – More compatibility with divx encoding options, like Qpel, compressed bitstream and GMC

i can’t stress this enough how much it would mean if these things, or at least some of them were added to the functionality of the console.

i would really like to be able to play almost anything with the PS3.. it would make it the ultimate media machine.

this 2.2 updates do sound very good indeed, i am rejoicing here :)

  • they don’t care about gamers, its all about blu-ray that why it was incorporated in this system to with the disc was to get royalties, and to show they don’t care they make t-shirts that say in-game t-shirt to mock us, like it is a joke or something, i didn’t appreciate that

  • Pretty exciting update. I’m pumped for any updates regarding PS3-PSP functionality. Sounds like this will be the first to allow PS3 functionality while PSP is connected (concurrently). Hopefully this is a step toward full remote play capabilities where the PSP and PS3 are both active.

  • not bad. not even 1 million “in game xmb!!!!11” posts. Anyway, i like this update! i say the more updates the better.

  • Every game thats released without Sony having the In game XMB feature will just be another game that I buy for my 360 instead.

I own all consoles, including the portables, but I love my PS3 the most! However, I will not buy a gimped game just because of that. Take R6V2, I will buy this game for my 360 simply because in game messaging is important to me. I would love to buy the PS3 version but Sony refuses to give us a way to connect with friends in a game.

Ill say it again I WANT TO BUY THE PS3 VERSIONS OF THESE GAMES!! Its just not important to Sony to make the experience equal….. so go ahead Sony keep losing my $$ It don’t hurt me, I still play the great games on my other console.

  • @ gigakain, very well said

  • Support for .srt subs would be nice.

  • this is the last thing I will say (for Now), a friend of mine who is a xbox owner, just went and got a ps3 so he can play games with me online and the first thing he said was how am i gonna know if you are online, you know what i said you have to see if my name pops up on the screen he said what if i dont see that i said just call me on the phone, since that days he has not played his ps3, he said what is the point all im doing is loosing all the features that i am used to, now he wants me to get a 360 to play games with him online…

  • hey nice update.
Just a suggestion for the Web browser and I don’t know if this would be possible, but would it be possible to rewrite the code for Mozilla Firefox and put a version of it on the PS3? The current browser is ok and all (and its a LOT better than the “other console’s” browser ;-) ) but it just doesn’t seem to cut it. I don’t know if you wouldbe allowed to take the code for FF and use it like that, but I figured since its an open source project…..
Another, totally unrelated idea I had was to morph the “Gaia” music visualizer with a modified version of Celestia. Now THAT would be cool…….
Anyway, thanks for the update and keep up the good work. (I would also appreciate some info on Home…..but I guess you already knew that…)

  • @#89
get a life man (and while you’re at it, a brain as well) how can you play online with your friend if he has a 360 and you have a PS3??!!

    ….

    That’s what I thought…

  • Thank you for adding the Resume function, this will save a lot of hassel and time for me.

Post number 63 has a suggestion I’ve been thinking about also, putting a clock on the menu that comes up when the PS button is pressed. I know this doesn’t sound very important, but I’m hoping it is simple to do. Thank you for considering this.

  • Last thing I will say is that for the last 3 updates the 80GB PS3 model has gotten no PS2 B/C support at all in each update. We want to play the new PS2 games that are out IE Twisted Metal Head on, Naruto Ultimate Ninja 3, and of course the Metal Gear Solid Compilation pack.

Get this support in this update or the next and we will be vary happy! We love the PS3 and the games out for it, but for the love of god give some support for PS2 games!

  • @thingg did you read what i wrote you idiot, he got a ps3 to play game with me online

  • WOW, this is amazing!
    thank you sony

  • @94
whoops, my bad. (I was like can he really be that dumb? I guess I can heheh)

  • WHOA now this is more like it. These features:
“Resume play” will enable PS3 system to start playing a Blu-ray disc
and DVD at the point it was stopped, even if the disc had been
    removed.(*1)
    — “Audio Output Device” will be a new Remote Play setting, enabling PSP
to serve as a remote control for music played through PS3.
    — PS3 system’s Internet browser will be enhanced: Video files directly
linked from a Web page will be able to be streamed, and the browser’s
    view speed will be improved.
    — DivX and WMV format videos that are larger than 2GB will be playable.
    — “Mosquito Noise Reduction” will be added as an AV setting in the
control panel of the DVD/BD player for improved movie playback.(*2)

are the ones I’m most impressed about and can’t wait to use my slim and lite psp with. Man you guys are on the ball today. THis is the best update news in a loooong time. THanks Peoples of Sony world. You guys ROCK.

    Ringtunes from Movies. YOOWZZZZERS!!!

  • I’m beginning to think that there are different dev teams working on the FW updates. This would explain how Sony is able to release a full multimedia update (kudos btw, but can you explain “No BD-J resume”? Does that mean yes you can in a BD-J movie, just not the special features, or no resume period for those movies?), but not release any other things people have asked for.

Like I don’t think the clock would fit under Multimedia, it’d probably be the more general guys. Maybe with the promised XMB it will have one?

The RSX in Linux thing is a good idea, but if they gave it, it might tip the balance in favor of the hackers, so I doubt it.

I suspect I need to pick up a PSP soon…

How about releasing PSP games on the PS3 store for use on PSP or PS3? I’d absolutely LOVE to play PSP games (~eyeing Crisis Core~) but I don’t have one. I really have no need for a portable system (the latest one I have is a Gameboy Color), but I’d like the games. You’d think it’d be a simple emulation thing, unlike the PS2’s architecture. I mean there’s so many homebrew games and hacks, Sony could hire a hacking team to make it if they couldn’t figure it out.
