Firmware v2.20 bringing BD-Live to PS3

380 0

Hi again everyone. Here’s a quick preview of the next PLAYSTATION 3 system software update coming up in the next few days. Firmware v2.20, introduces a number of features to further enhance your PLAYSTATION 3 as the hub of your entertainment center.

Most notably, the update enables the PS3 to support Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0, also known as BD-Live. You can connect now to the Internet while playing discs that support BD-Live to obtain additional content and special features. These features vary from disc to disc, and will keep your BD discs fresh with new content and in some cases exclusive content only accessible to owners of BD-Live enabled discs. On April 8th Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release The 6th Day and Walk Hard on Blu-ray; these titles will be among the first to take advantage of BD-Live. With this update, the PLAYSTATION 3 becomes the first Blu-ray player on the market with BD-Live functionality.

Here are some of the other new features/enhancements that will be included in Firmware v2.20:

  • The ability to copy PS3 Music and Photo playlists to a PSP system. We introduced the ability to create Music and Photo playlists on the PS3 in firmware update v2.0. Now you can easily export your playlists to your PSP.
  • You can now play DivX and WMV format files that are over 2 GB. In addition, you can now display subtitles when viewing DivX files.
  • Resume Play – begin playing a DVD or BD disc from the point where you previously stopped it, even if you eject the disc and insert a different movie or game.
  • Use your PSP as a remote control to play back your music files on your PS3 without turning on your TV.
  • The Internet browser now displays some web pages faster. In addition [Save Target] has been added as an option under file. This option lets you save a file that is linked to a web page to your PS3 hard drive or storage media.

There are a few other tweaks and upgrades included in v2.20 – we’ll provide more specifics as the update is about to go live.

  • Great update btw. I can tout that i have the only bd 2.0 player on the market right now. Haha!

But here comes my suggestion (if you guys are still reading this thread, I hope so). I got a PSP survey earlier this week and filled it out. The question was asking what you would like to use the PSP for in the future (as far as PS3 connectivity was concerned) and one of the answers was to have the PSP act as game recorder. I’m guessing you could save game play of like your favorite kill or best sports moment onto your PSP and then you could transfer it to either the PS3 or your laptop and show everyone.

Hopefully this is making sense, but I’d like to see this implemented into the future of the connectivity between the 2 systems. I didn’t pick it as an answer on the survey because quite frankly all the answer to this question were awesome ideas. But using the PSP as a game recorder would be awesome.

Sorry if this wasn’t on topic to the post. Just wanted to get that out there since I saw that the PSP could be used as a remote for music.

  • Everything sounds great. Thanks for the heads up on the firmware update, please tell us about these in advance more often please!!!

  • Wow, all this and I STILL can’t read messages from my Friends while playing a game. Lame.

  • This is awesome, I just hope that more files are able to be played cuz there are a bunch of divx files that I can’t play. I also hope for the latest flash player for the web cuz I use it all the time! :)

  • Just another request for SACD multichannel over DTS for optical connections.. or at least SOME sort of comment about why it was there and taken away!

Please bring back SACD multichannel over optical!

  • @slickrich05

    you must work at sony

Nope. Because if I did, there’d be a hell of a lot more games for the ps3 and game developers would actually have to support the games they developed, provide gamma correction, and mute player functionality in their games (at the risk of sounding immature) …duh!!??

so what you are saying is i dont [sic] need to be able to send messages to my friends or know when they are online and what they are playinig [sic]

Again, No; these are not multimedia related and…Hello…McFly!? The ps3 already does these.

all i should do i play the game and be happy

Yes. you didn’t buy your ps3 to make toast, did you?

  • I hope some of the extra features for this update include the ability to play music in the background while using the PLAYSTATION Store, the ability to edit the album info of multiple data with one text entry, and version 9 of the flash client for the web browser.

  • PLEASE ADD BLACK TO THE COLOR CHOOSER!

  • @kenji

Amen Brother. Sony needs to publish a “____ you must be this high to ride the PS3” set of standards to game developers and if they already do, for the sake of Pete, RAISE THE BAR.

  • This is going to be one great update. I’m definitely liking the Subtitle action, thats going to be available, can’t wait to hear about the other tweaks and updates :)

  • The Divx/Wmv File Support/Subtitles, Resume Play and the Save file target are great additions to the PS3. I was anxiously waiting for these. Thanks Sony!

  • So PsychoEddie,

There’d be more games available for the PS3 if you worked at Sony?

    I’m confused.

Would you build those games yourself?

Or would you just come up with the millions of dollars needed (and the years of development time needed) to pay other people to make them for you?

    Please clarify.

  • great update!! especially being able to take my PS3 playlists with me… I’ve been doing this PC/iTunes thing which took forever… now its easier and better! yay!

    THANKS!

  • TouchyEd @ 193 , I totally agree, i own more blu-ray movies than games (if you don’t count the downloaded games) and i love all the functionality i get with the PS3 as my central home multimedia system.
Like you, i have family in a different country (good thing my brother got a PS3) , so Skype would help with VOIP and video chat.

  • Hey Eric, could you put up a post or a series of posts shining some kind of light on the firmware creation process. I for one would like to know if firmware features are decided upon in Japan only or if each region gets a say.

  • Great update! Can’t wait for more info!

  • great but still waiting for ingame XMB + HOME

  • Great!!
but Please Please Put Mexico on the PSN
! I want My Mexican PSN…! I dont want to be listed as a us and i need to buy games from the psn i cant because my card adress!!

  • the fact remains that as much as Sony has lost market share among gamers, it has lost far more mind share among third party developers, publishers and even PR people, all of whom say that Microsoft is more responsive to their needs. We’ll just add this to the list of problems that Sony will have to fix if it wants to reclaim its throne. (Scroll down to see the remaining screens.)

  • People need to stop saying Sony doesn’t focus on games. 08’s game lineup is solid and set and we have to wait till major conferences like E3 and TGS for games coming out in 09′ We already know Twisted Metal is coming out in 09′ and possibly God of War in either 09′ or 10′ Honestly, who cares how many third party exclusives sony, xbox, or wii has. Out of all the third party exclusive games, how many of them did you actually buy and most of them are half-ass games like 360 timed exclusive Lost Planet and such. 3rd party games receive half ass support to first party games. What has better online support? COD4 or Resistance?

I like how Sony is offering lots of support for the PSP now and I’m guessing BD-Live is the ps3’s “video store?”

Can someone make it clear to me if the latest flash player for the web browser is going to be updated to the latest version and that every video file can be dled to the ps3 hard drive?

  • Awsome cant wait till 2.40 coming in july.

  • sweet. And people need to stop complaining if they dont like the update, ur [DELETED] will come in a later one so dont stress -___-.

  • Maybe I am the only one who has noticed, but the ‘Clock’ idea seems to be a crowd favorite… Is there any way to have this implemented? As a programmer I fail to see how adding this would be challenging…

Oh, and just to make it stand out. CLOCK CLOCK… Hopefully you saw that…

  • @187(TouchyEd)

I agree with everything you said man.

And to all the kids thats complaining about in-game xmb(SLICKRICH05/WILLACUZ specifically) in-game xmb will be coming in the 2.4 update over the summer so stfu about it. In-game xmb isnt something that can be done easily and the reason M$ has in-game communication now is because they started on it years before the first xbox was released.

And to willacuz, 10 yr olds screaming “n*gg*r” and other foul mouth sh*t on their mics doesn’t make the xbox community better. If you dont like your ps3 that much then get rid of it. You wont be hurting Sony’s feelings, they already got your money.

  • Please provide 1080i support for all games.

  • how do people actually line yourselves up for disappointment, no this latest update wont include in game xmb. if it did then in would definitely be on the change log and @193 , what you will probably notice is that the people pissed off are the ones that spent 600euro out of their own pockets, the fact that you are complacent with your choice only gives the impression you are one of those spoiled brats that doesn’t understand the concept of value for money and competition in the marketplace and how it should affect products. So go whine about your love for a company thats had its finger jammed up your a+s since launch someplace else.

  • Yay! We finally get Resume Play!

Now if we could only get Theatre Sync / HDMI CEC that would be perfect!

  • Thanks for the update!

Next firmware you guys should probably institute a daycare for all the crybabies.

  • Browser updates ftw!

  • @TouchyEd

Personally, I didn’t spend nearly $1,000 (after cables, PS3 Eye, extra controllers, blu-ray remotes, console stands, etc) to only use my PS3 as a gaming console.

    then you’re an idiot.
Alright, alright I apologize. I’m really, really sorry. I apologize unreservedly. I offer a complete and utter retraction. The imputation was totally without basis in fact, and was in no way fair comment, and was motivated purely by malice, and I deeply regret any distress that my comment may have caused
you or your family and I hereby undertake not to repeat any such slander at anytime in the future. At first glance you appear to be simple of mind, and yet you seem to understand the complexity behind implementing in game xmb. How very curious. No. I would not have built the games myself. I’d have delayed the PS3 launch another year or until the software and hardware were ready for prime time.

  • Great! I can’t wait!! I have some concerns though,

I heard that the PSN is going to have an extreme change soon, so I’m guessing that Sony’s going to redesign it. Well, Sony, I just want to say, that the only reason that people love Xbox Live more than Playstation Network is just the fact that they have more stuff to offer. For all the things that both PSN and Xbox Live offer, PSN does fine, if not better (I’ve never seen an online game on Xbox Live that could handle 40 players at once, and soon 60 players). But if you added these features to PSN, then I am definitely sure that you will be able to beat Xbox Live. There’s no question that Sony will beat Microsoft this year in terms of next-gen games, but it’ll be a challenge for them to beat Xbox Live. Sony, I’m BEGGING YOU, if you add these features to PSN, I have absolutely no doubt on my mind that you will win the console war in terms of online.

Remember that these are only suggestions to ADD to the PSN, not to replace the PSN with just these suggestions.

    1. Being able to buy/rent movies right from the PS Store.

Think about it: Sony Pictures Entertainment makes some of the best movies out there (SPIDER MAN 3!), so wouldn’t it be GREAT to have PS3 owners be able to either rent or buy those movies and save them on their hard drive? Besides, there isn’t any time better than now, since Blu-Ray has won, and now Sony has many movie companies who want to give their movies to Sony to sell. I think that this would be a very cool feature, and would definitely be superior to the way it is done on the 360, since HD-DVD has just lost.

    2. Being able to buy music right from the PS Store.

How great would it be if Sony BMG Music Entertainment, one of the largest record companies in the world, distributed their music through the Playstation 3? Sony basically is in control of EVERYTHING in terms of music, so bringing it to the PS3 is definitely a great idea. And who knows, maybe if this idea becomes very successful, maybe Apple, who currently is looking for a Blu-Ray drive in their Macs, might even allow a partnership to have iTunes on the PS3!! But anyway, having a music store added to the PS3 is a great idea.

    3. Being able to download CLASSIC ARCADE GAMES from the PS Store.

I absolutely loved the idea that Sony made classic PS1 games available on the store. All the ones that made the PS1 great are there, from Crash Bandicoot and Spyro to Hot Shots Golf and Tekken. I know that there are also some Old School Classics, like Rampage and Joust, but I think that Sony should expand it even further. I’m talking about adding the games that DEFINED arcade, like The Simpsons Arcade, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Mega Man, Street Fighter, Contra, Pac Man, Castlevania, Doom, Metroid, Mortal Combat, Tetris, Zelda, Prince of Persia, Ninja Gaiden, Star Wars, and ESPECIALLY Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario Bros. Those are the only ones I can think of on the top of my head,

  • 4. Being able to access the XMB Menu even while playing a game.

In game XMB is something that would be VERY useful. I hated playing Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare online, but whenever I wanted to add a friend, I had to quit the game to get to the XMB. Also, when Def Jam: Icon came out, I was very disappointed that on the Xbox 360 version, you could add your own songs to the game, but the PS3 version could not because there was no way to access the XMB in the game. And I respect the fact that Sony tried to make things easier in Resistance, where it was possible to access just the FRIENDS section of the XMB while playing online, but why not just make it the WHOLE XMB menu? I would love being able to access the menu from the game, so if I want to look up some information online while playing a game, I can just pause the game, go to the Internet Browser, get the information, and return to the game without having to quit it. MULTITASKING! Believe me, Sony, this would be a great help.

    5. Add Instant Messaging to the PS3.

Sony, the way to interact with friends through video chat is absolutely perfect, and so is the way to voice chat with them. But for text, I find it confusing. Whenever I want to text someone, I just type my message and send it. Okay, easy enough. But when they reply, I have to go down to their name and just see THAT message. I mean, why not make the whole conversation in an IM format, where I am able to see one message after the other on the same conversation box? For example, If I message someone, there should just be a screen where my online ID, my icon, and my message is displayed, and when my friend replies, there should be, ON THAT SAME SCREEN, my friend’s online ID, icon, and message. Its as simple as that. Just display the messages as an ongoing conversation. Of course, there are limitations. For example, If my friend texts me one day, and we then get into a long conversation, and then two days later, that same friend messages me back, then obviously a new conversation should start (To make things easier, there should just be some sort of “End Conversation” button on the conversation page, so it is easy to tell which conversation is which).

    6. An Achievement System!!!

Sony, this is something that would seriously lessen the abilities of Xbox Live. Right now, I think that they’re the only network with an achievement system, so why don’t you add one yourself? It would be great to have an achievement system, gaining Playstation Points that you can use to purchase things in the PS Store, such as arcade games. Also, I know that HOME is going to ship with the ability to show off your achievements in your Trophy Room, so adding an actual achievement SYSTEM with Playstation Points would be GREAT! Why not even host little contests, such as this one: if a player can gain 2000 achievement points in one week from a certain date, then they get an achievement bonus to be able to buy all of that great content in the

  • Please add support for DivX 3.11+, and copyright protected files!!

  • We also need support for more WMV codecs!

PS3 can not play all WMV files

Example the PS3 can not play WMV from BrazzersNetwork

  • Things the PS3 needs!!

    1. Better internet browser (maybe flash enabled, lol )
    2. use the ps eye to recognize hand movement to navigate the XMB.
    3. add PS2 games to the PS Store.
    4. add a video/music download service.
    5. play Blu-ray movies through Remote Play
    6. Record gameplay!
    7. A deeper more innovative voice changer
    8. a more customizable XMB.
    9. A complete overhaul of the PS Store (maybe integrated into the XMB)
    10. send voice mails
    11. chat rooms
    12. password protected accounts
    13. An online streaming playstation channel like G4TV but playstation
    14. Remote Play through PC.
    15. Clock/Date (How hard is that, lol).
    16. Ability to upscale PS3 games
    17. Better iPod functionality
    18. Share more information under online iD (ie. listening to music)
    19. PS2 games playable through remote play
    20. Opposite remote play (show PSP screen on PS3)
    21. an RSS channel
    22. Voice recognition
    23. Custom online avatars
    24. folders within folders (would be better for organizing music)
    25. More than 50 friends
    26. A writing type application (like Microsoft Word)
    27. Send files like music and videos to other PS3 users.
    28. Files over 2gb
    29. Ability to communicate with phones (somehow?)
    30. Timer for controller (Automatically turns off after being idle for awhile)
    31. Ability to adjust the screen size/boarders (good for DLP TVs)
    32. Unlimited text in a message
    33. Internet radio
    34. Copy Blu-rays to hard drive
    35. Share files between PSP and PS3 over the web (NOT REMOTE PLAY!)
    36. Play TV for the U.S.
    37. Auto shutdown of system after finish of download, option.
    38. And of course support for every freaking format, file, and codec possible!
