Firmware (v.2.30) Details and Store Walkthrough

+ Posted by Eric Lempel // Director, PlayStation Network Operations

Hey Everyone! We know you’re all patiently waiting for the next PS3 firmware update, ver. 2.30, which includes the revamped PLAYSTATION Store. The good news is that it’s coming soon, and you can now see how the new user interface will look in this video demo featuring Grace Chen.

I have more good news to report today – the system software update will also add DTS-HD Master Audio output for Blu-ray videos, which means the high-definition visuals of Blu-ray will now be matched with the highest quality audio for the ultimate movie-watching experience on PS3.

DTS-HD Master Audio is literally bit-for-bit identical to the studio master recording and makes movie soundtracks and sound effects truly come to life. The technology delivers audio at the incredibly high rate of 24.5 mega-bits per second (Mbps) on Blu-ray disc, which is significantly higher than standard DVDs. DTS-HD Master Audio also offers 7.1 audio channels at 96k sampling frequency/24 bit depths, so you’ll be totally immersed in the sound. The firmware update will add DTS-HD High Resolution Audio as well, which is a similar output technology that requires less disc space. You can read more about both codecs here.

A lot of you, particularly the home theatre enthusiasts and audiophiles out there, have been asking us for this capability, and we can’t wait until you have an opportunity to pop in a compatible Blu-ray video to test it out for yourself.

awesome! a surprise within a surprise! This is great! Thanks for the update and video!

I have a question. If I put an item on the store and happen to close the store will the content in the checkout basket still be there or will i have to relocate the game if i want to purchase?

nice. i never had a real problem with the old store but this one looks much nicer. i like that the purchased items don’t disappear anymore. I’m guessing this way if u ever delete a game off your hard drive on accident it wont be as hard to find again to download.instead of going through all the demos and other items on your download list.

amd i really like these videos showing the new firmwares and features. would be cool if you can get some exclusive gameplay shown off this way like for Resistance 2 or maybe for the next Warhawk booster pack(after broken mirror). would be kind of cool to see the developers playing there own games.

I forgot to ask, will the canadian prices be fixed in this new store? I’m not buying anything until it is.

Let me say that this is a fantastic update. I was a bit skeptical at first after looking at the screenshots, but now i am convinced. The store is organized very well and the fluid nature of the transition is very nice. As a owner of both the XBOX 360 and PS3 I can now say that the PS Store is just as good, if not better than XBOX Live Marketplace. I just hope Sony and Playstation keep up good, regular updates.

REQUEST!!!!!
Can we please have PS2 Classic downloads. This, along with reasonable pricing, will be very popular

GOOD WORK SONY!!!!!!!!!

Does the PS3 decode and down-mix the DTS-HD for older amps or is the decoding of the data stream handled by the amp only?

adeleon's Avatar

adeleon replied on April 10, 2008 at 11:28 am

The PS3 can decode and down-mix the DTS-HD. The audio signal down-mixes to the core DTS (5.1) or PCM (2.0) when using the optical cable. Keep in mind that the A/V receiver needs to support the core DTS in order for it to decode the signal.

I’m genuinely impressed. The preview feature will have me buying alot more PSN games.

One potential problem I see - when you click Add to Cart, the dialog box should ask “Continue Shopping” or “Checkout”

Thrilled about the new store.

This going to fix mp4 video streaming? I can’t use about 90% of what I have a PS3 for.

One can only play so much PixelJunk Monsters!

YAHOOOOOO, thank you Sony, I have about 30 blu-rays with DTS Master audio and have waited and waited, and while the store re-design is exciting to me, the DTS MA update is absolutely fantastic. Great job on updating this great piece of hardware…I just love my PS3.

WOW!
SIMPLY WOW!
Sony you have truly stepped it up a notch I am so proud to be a lifelong fan and supporter of Sony and the PlayStation brand!

This post has made my month! The PS3 is truly a dynamic piece of equipment, and has convinced me the PS3 is capable of almost anything!

A new era has dawned, the PS3 has have blown away the competition and we aren’t looking back!

I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for us and the PS3!
Thank you guys so much for this blog and listening to us, your customers. It seems like a simple concept for a consumer driven company to listen to the consumers but Sony and PlayStation have redefined what listening to the customers really mean!
Thank you so much for this and keep it up!

Still waiting for In Shirt … GAME XMB! =)

Store…pretty. :P

I especially like that you can go over to the pictures and jump straight to that item. And I’m even happier that that stupid mouse icon has gone the way of the dodo.

I’m not entirely sure what all that technical stuff means for the audio but I have a sound system that isn’t entirely ancient so I’ll give it a try.

Thank you very much, Grace, Eric and everyone else for all of your hard work! :D

That looks great.

Smooth button/avatar popup throughout makes it look really polished.

Video previews put it past the competition.

QUESTION:
Is the base tech borrowed from the SingStore?
It looks similar in basic framework and it has the same nice zoom in/out transition.

I guess we’ll have to wait for a release date?

Now lets get a large slew of content for it, let every Thursday top the last and it be nice if you sprinkled in content on other days too.

Very nice cant wait for the store I did not like the last set up and I like the preview especially video i hate going to IGN just to see gameplay video and or screenshots of a game this should be a must for any game in the store.

These updates, are great. DTS-HD Master is the icing on the Blu-ray cake. The new store re-design is great too :)

Thanks once again for providing added functionality to an already awesome piece of hardware.

PS3 has turned out to be the best piece of hardware (not only game console) I’ve ever owned.

Keep up the great work!
