Apr Hey Everyone! We know you’re all patiently waiting for the next PS3 firmware update, ver. 2.30, which includes the revamped PLAYSTATION Store. The good news is that it’s coming soon, and you can now see how the new user interface will look in this video demo featuring Grace Chen.
I have more good news to report today – the system software update will also add DTS-HD Master Audio output for Blu-ray videos, which means the high-definition visuals of Blu-ray will now be matched with the highest quality audio for the ultimate movie-watching experience on PS3.
DTS-HD Master Audio is literally bit-for-bit identical to the studio master recording and makes movie soundtracks and sound effects truly come to life. The technology delivers audio at the incredibly high rate of 24.5 mega-bits per second (Mbps) on Blu-ray disc, which is significantly higher than standard DVDs. DTS-HD Master Audio also offers 7.1 audio channels at 96k sampling frequency/24 bit depths, so you’ll be totally immersed in the sound. The firmware update will add DTS-HD High Resolution Audio as well, which is a similar output technology that requires less disc space. You can read more about both codecs here.
A lot of you, particularly the home theatre enthusiasts and audiophiles out there, have been asking us for this capability, and we can’t wait until you have an opportunity to pop in a compatible Blu-ray video to test it out for yourself.

The PS3 can’t bitstream any of the newer codecs like TrueHD, DTS-MA or DD+. If you want to hear lossless audio on your PS3 you need to select Linear PCM in your audio output options and then you need to have a receiver capable of taking the multichannel PCM audio from the HDMI connection.

Sony DG910 Receiver handels this as an 5.1 PCM sound and cannot change the remapping of the stereo sound to all the speakers. I think the work around should be a setting that says that map stereo sounds as 5.1 PCM sound, so that the receivers will play an mp3 or an mp4 movie with stereo sound in 5.1 … or just leave the PS3 to send 2 channel sounds as 2 channels over the HDMI without 5.1 PCM remapping and let the receivers handle the rest

Congratulations for your continuous efforts and supporting of the PS3. The new store looks very nice. About the store, you should pay more attention to supporting all countries. There shouldn`t be any need for people creating other accounts or looking for content that there isn`t in one continent store eg. Europe.
About the audiophile wish of DTS- master audio, of course is a great update but I think there are more simple and urgent things to take care of, for example a trustworthy video player like PCs have, to play mkv and most common video files and support external subtitles.
For me, the most worthy opponent of PS3 is not Xbox or Wii, but PCs and especially HTPCs and that`s the comparison I`m waiting to see how it goes….
