PlayStation Store Update

+ Posted by Grace Chen // Senior Manager, PLAYSTATION Store

Hi, everyone! Just wanted to provide an update about the PlayStation Store. The store for both the PS3 and PC will be unavailable starting early morning Monday, April 14 through early morning of Tuesday, April 15. You will not be able to access either store during this maintenance window.

As you know, we are preparing to release the revamped interface of the PlayStation Store for the PS3, which will be available on Tuesday. Regular weekly updates of the store will resume on Thursday, April 17, along with the release of GT5 Prologue.

Thanks for all the positive feedback about the upcoming store design!

One more thing can you guys fix it to where we can charge our PS3 remotes while the System is in STANDBY mode. It sucks having to leave them on for that. Also why doesn’t my PSP charge with the USB that I use from the PS3. I use that PS3 USB cord on my PSP with my Computer and it charges my battery but for some odd reason it never charges hooked into my PS3 can you inform me why?? FIX THAT TO PLEASE in your 2.40 update as well.

I’d prefer SOMETHING to point at and say “that’s nice” it’s not even releases, the whole system feels clunky, and just doesn’t have the sleakness that the system has in physical design. The store had sucked from the beginning, why even release it in the first place rather than fix that?

I bought a PS3 last year because I heard Home was coming, It’s been almost 12 monthes where is Home? Sony only announced it to sucker people into buying their system, but they knew they couldn’t deliver on their promises.

Everything about the PS3 has been incomplete, I’d much rather to see SOME progress then the constant waiting.

But hey, at least lair is finally getting patched.

I’m a proud owner of both a PS3 and 360…no qualms here! My elite has run great since I got it, and my 60 gig launch PS3 is still my favorite..

If you are so jealous you can’t afford both systems, too bad! Don’t take it out on me!

@at all the kids yapping on about the “surprise”

Did you even read who wrote that there was a “surprise” coming on the blog today?? It was Konami, NOT SONY, they will obviously post it when they are ready, and stop complaining because Sony isn’t going to ruin the whole thing! That would take the fun out of it. I’m almost guaranteeing that you probably won’t think it’s that great anyway, unless it happens to be Home or something of the like…

But no, you all just complain that you jumped the gun when anyone who actually read into Home knew that it was only gonna be a closed beta for a while. You know what Sony was doing with Home this entire time?? Making it as good as they promised it would be. Things like building a virtual community takes time and massive amounts of money and development. Good things come to those who wait, and if you’re not willing, go pawn your PS3 off and give it to some kid who actually likes the damned thing.

LOL I hear ya Frito. Yeah I had a Elite 360 along with my 80gig Ps3 last year but those 360’s SUCK. I went through 8 360’s since there launch and they SUCK. What use is a few of there good games if the systems never last. Ps3 man they seem to run for ever maybe a freeze here and there but they hardly ever CRASH unlike 360’s. I know believe me. So 2008 I have decided PS3 is my only concern in the Gaming world but come on SONY get HOME out cause so far it was worth going through broken 360 after broken 360 just to have that Award system they have. PS3 has crap in that department untill we see what this so called Home will be like. It better not lag and when I turn that guy in Home I better not see lines accross then screen hint messed up frame rates. Even a lot of PS3 games have that Lines of low frame rates so you guys need to release games without that. Man I remember for 360 Perfect dark zero was VERY BAD WITH THE LINES. PS3 isn’t far behing that.

Oh hey Noel’s on here now.

@Noel Silvia

The “surprise” people are referencing was alluded to by the dude from Konami in the MGS4 post from last week. He said that he was gonna be back today for a big announcement. That’s what all the hubbub is about.

Noel Silvia's Avatar

Noel Silvia replied on April 14, 2008 at 10:21 am

Thanks for clearing that up, CI27.
Hopefully this will set things straight for people and clear up some of the confusion.

Lmao…I get a kick out of reading these threads.

Just a question; wouldn’t it be easier to simply READ the entire thread prior to posting? Rather than wasting time, space, or getting flamed…you may find the answer to your question available in a previous post.

Lol I swear, only half the people here read the whole thread in any given blog.

Too funny!

~Thanks for the info posted by PS employees and users alike.~

Have a good day everyone and remember to read prior to posting. :D

Not a problem, Fersis.
Considering how quickly online communication spreads, things can easily become a big game of “telephone”.
As someone who believed the SFII “Sheng Long” rumour way back in the day, I know what it feels like to believe mistaken information.
I’m glad to see so many of our “regulars” stepping up and helping to untangle some of the “rumour knots” before they spread too much when we can’t.

Can you please answer this? Is this update going to also fix the problem that some of us are having inputting our debit card info? The “card information is invalid etc” thing. It’s nice that it gives you that error yet a $1 hold is put on your card. No matter how you enter the information it doesn’t work (I’m personally using a Bank of America Visa debit card). I’ve used this card to purchase things everywhere else without any problems (including other consoles).

Whilst the store update is nice. My main concern, is if the firmware update fixes the MP4 streaming that got broken in 2.20 update (which fixed WMA streaming).

Desperate to know. Please Sony, elighten….

TO Noel Silvia or anyone from playstation network: Great update and responses to the jerks in here. Is it possible we could get a help screen incorporated with the xmb to explain stuff like “full rgb” etc. We could look it up on the internet, but isnt that inconvienent for users. Also were are the psn cards?

Noel Silvia's Avatar

Noel Silvia replied on April 14, 2008 at 10:34 am

I don’t know about incorporating it in to a Firmware update as that’s not something that I’m directly involved, with, but I’ll talk to Jeff about maybe doing a blog post to explain some of these more technical features of the PLAYSTATION3.

CitizenInsane27  |  April 14th, 2008 at 10:09 am

@SLICKT8000

This problem you are referring to is known as ’screen tearing’ and isn’t so much an artifact of frame rate as it is from the refresh rates of many HDTV’s. If you go to any Best Buy or electronics dealer, and inquire into 120hz HDTV’s you can find a simple, yet elegantly expensive solution. This problem stems from the rates of which many monitors refresh themselves at. The problem could be fixed, at the sacrifice of frame rate. So think long and hard for me once, and answer honestly, in a game as fast paced as Warhawk, which would you rather deal with, a small bit of tearing (I’ve seen it too, but don’t over exaggerate it…) or slow choppy frame rates that can cause you to crash because you couldn’t see a mountain coming?

CitizenInsane27  |  April 14th, 2008 at 10:21 am

@SLICKT8000

No, actually, that wouldn’t help too much, bumping the resolution *up* to 720p instead of 1080i might help a bit, but won’t completely resolve the problem. Like I said, it really has to do with refresh rates. What year is your model of TV from?

right at the top of the page it says:

according to that info, that is indeed circa 24 hours.

and who cares anyway? 15 hours, 24 hours, it’s a long time. But Noel Silva cleared that up as to why.

They only sell SONY now with that Brava or how ever thats spelled lol. Maybe I need a new TV. And I thought 1080i even though thats interlaced I thought thats still better than 720 progressive. ??

CitizenInsane27  |  April 14th, 2008 at 10:39 am

@SLICKT8000

Hmmm, well I don’t know too much about Dell monitors, so I can’t really reference it well. I use a 46″ Sony Bravia LCD, seeing all the rest of my Sony gear worked so well, and I had read great reviews of their TV’s before purchasing. Anywho, 1080i *is* technically better due to it’s supports more pixels on screen, but it’s only rescanning the pixels half as much due to it’s interlace programming. This can result in what I like to call “ghosts” where you see images drag out, or leave trails and traces and can subsequently cause more apparent tearing on screen. So while you are getting more pixels, it’s only letting you see so much more of them at a time. 1080i is definitely better for video content, but for ideal video game playback, I definitely suggest 720p if your TV can do it!

Sorry, SLICK - I read your comments, and since CI27 was doing such a good job explaining what “screen-tearing” is, I didn’t want to repeat him.
A lot of your questions are also very tech-oriented, and since that’s not something I’m qualified to answer, I thought I’d leave it to the experts.

The confusion came as there wasn’t a “big surprise” from us at the PSN team.
I’ve been a little out-of-the-loop on the blog here for the past couple of weeks (mea culpa!); figured that working on getting the new Store ready for launch was kinda important. ;)

Well you are psuedo-correct. I’m positive there are people up at Sony that know exactly what the heck the *big surprise* IS, but Noel might just have had the day off, seeing as that all the responses from that article were being handled by the Konami rep.
