SCEA Judges Day: MotorStorm Pacific Rift interview

31 6

Here’s another pre-E3 Judges Day interview about another big sequel – MotorStorm Pacific Rift. In this video, I caught up with Felice Standifer, who you may remember as Sr. Producer on the original MotorStorm game. Wasn’t that long ago, was it?

Once the camera was rolling, I asked her about transitioning from one game to the next, how much more work remains to be done, and *your* role in getting local multiplayer/split-screen into the sequel.

Like yesterday, if you’re not interested in what we’re talking about, enjoy the game playing in the background.

More videos to come later this week!

  • I really liked the first MotorStorm, despite having a few issues. MotorStorm: Pacific Rift solves pretty much all problems I had with the first. Can’t wait. :D

Only thing I also hope for is quicker loading when selecting a vehicle.

  • Motorstorm is my favorite racing game on the ps3. I would like like to see an improvement on the online stats and community aspects, keeping track of how many times you finished in each position, not just how many times you won.

  • Jeff,

We LOVE these interviews. It’s always great to hear directly from the developers on the state of a game. Can we have more of them please?

Keep up the good work man!

    • Jeff Rubenstein

      Yes. Yes it is.

This is what I wanted to deliver from GDC, but i got insanely sick. Expect more as we enter \”Conference Season.\”

  • nice but, i’d like more little big planet jeff, like asked for yesterday, and i’m sorry if i come off as an obnoxious person, i’m just an eager gamer

  • I’m most impressed with the on screen mayhem in the video.. wow. Evolution Studios has improved upon the physics it seems.. very impressed. It would be nice if we can get an in-car view this time around in Motorstorm: Pacific Rift.

  • Nice, the game is shaping up to be what Motorstorm 1 was first intended to be. I still enjoyed Motorstorm 1, but I wanted more, I will miss the desert like looking levels.

Yet the water and the rest of the new effects looks great and the game is looking way better than before. I only have 2 questions about this game:

    1. Are they planning to improve the crashing physics? I mean it looks nice when you crash, but I want to see some vehicules rolling instead of flying a lot.

    2. I remember reading that Motorstorm 2 will allow customization of vehicules and characters, how true is this?

  • ps. what was the point of the extra thirty blank seconds in the video?

    • Jeff Rubenstein

Crackle kept kicking back the file at first, so when I messed with it (resulting in some blankness), it worked. Skip as necessary.

  • It’s looking great, but I was just wondering if there was any plans for split screen while playing online?

This was hands down my favorite feature of Warhawk, which I, and many other gamers feel is a necessary part of many online games.

  • I agree with Mort, I am one of the “we” that love these interviews. Anyways, I wish I could think of some questions to ask about Pacific Rift, but thanks to this blog and the interviews all my questions have been answered…Oh wait! I thought I read somewhere that Pacific Rift will have custom soundtracks, but I can’t remember where. Will it have custom soundtracks?

  • I am so exited for this game

any in game footage going to be realeased any time soon?

    • Jeff Rubenstein

When there is – we\’ll have it here. As mentioned, it\’s roughly 40% done at present. Looks good, but it\’ll look much better in a couple months.

  • @09 Shane_O
It will have custom soudtracks you can see it in the news and press section of the US playstation site.

  • Good video.Looking forward to the game. Can we get one of these for LittleBigPlanet with Alex? Please!!

Is there sixaxxis control in the Motorstorm Pacific Rift?
    thnks

  • Can’t wait for game like all others Sony will be releasing this fall!
1 thing tho you said its 40% done so they have to do the 60% in few months? Will it really ship in fall? or they hope to?

oh and i forgot to ask yesterday (for the killzone question to ask next time to developers)how is the progress of the game going? I mean, is it like 80% done or something?

  • Sorry for double post but i meant, I can’t wait for this game and all others…

  • OuroborosChoked

So another off-road racing game… just like Pure, ExciteTruck, blah blah blah…

Like Daver said, when are you guys going to start using this blog as a forum to tell us where games are in development? Interviews are great, but that’s not really what we’re here for, is it? If you’re going to start filling this with Sony employees fluffing others Sony employees, can you tell us where the actual news will be located?

  • Is this going to be a downloadable PSN title?

  • Awesome! I can’t wait for this to come out, as the first title is still one of my favorites.

  • Dubbedinenglish

Awesome, Jeff how was the water in the build?

    • Jeff Rubenstein

I only played the one beach level, and it was cool the way the sunlight reflected off of it, but I was honestly more concerned with how it cooled down my boost meter!

  • I enjoyed the original Motorstorm, however, there was a fair share of annoyances that kept the experience from truly being amazing. First off was the lackluster multiplayer (no offline, online races had speed boost glitch for months, extremely bare-bones setup) secondly was the complete lack of a free race style event for single-player, and third, was the load times.

Pacific Rift looks to correct a good amount of those problems, and because of this, should be a much better game. That, and the awesome new location.

    I eagerly await more info.

  • any chance that there will be 4player online?

  • Jeff, relax, you sound so nervous in these interviews :) BTW keep em coming!!!

  • I agree with Jenova, relax dude. You look so tense.

Thanks for bringing these vids to us. I can’t wait to play Pacific Rift, as I enjoyed the first one very much.

Also Jeff, if you were able to convince the big wigs to get live streaming for Sony conferences that worked with the PS3 browser. That would be just…lovely.

    Thanks!

  • i have one question does motor storm 2 aka pacific rift have wheel support?i mean does its support the racing wheel that gran tursimo does?

  • Who’s that hottie? Jeff?… dam. Good interview.

  • will there be custom soundtracks

  • I’m sorry for writing this under the comments section but.. will we see a Syphon Filter game hit the PS3 anytime soon?

Motorstorm: Pacific Rift looks dam good at 40%.

  • I CAN’T WAIT!!! Motorstorm: Pacific Rift is going to be awesome.

  • Looks good. I haven’t even played enough of Motorstorm yet and now I want this sequel!

ps. you have this post filed under Uncategorized. ;)

  • Hey Jeff,

Was their any talk about why theirs an old man on a bike in some of the photos? Does this mean they are allowing for customisable characters?

    Pretty cool if true.

  • I think it’s great that we get to see some behind the scenes action. I also think it’s funny how when Home when was announced we were told that we could launch right from from the lobby of Home into a game of Motorstorm multiplayer. Home isn’t out yet and Motorstorm 2 will probably be out first. I wonder if they will still support my copy of Motorstorm online? Food for thought

  • thanks for more of your undercover reporting!

Questions for Felice (if she happens to read this post)

    1) In single player mode, will the action slow down for the optional explosion scenes when you wreck like in the first one?

    2) When on motorcycles, can you still punch people off other bikes and taunt other drivers with hand motions?

    3) Are custom soundtracks going to be available?

    4) (not a question) As others have said, PLEASE make the section where you choose your car LOAD FASTER!!! In the original game, it was HORRIBLE!! Maybe just show a flat picture of the car, instead of the whole digital model.

AND THANKS FOR INCLUDING 2 Player SPLIT SCREEN MODE!! FINALLY!

I still play and show off Motorstorm to people to wow them when the cars explode!

    looking forward to part 2~

  • I have the fisrt MotorStorm now i’am going to MotorStorm-Pacific Rift and GTA 4 grid and Metal Gear Solid Guns OF Patriots this sweet and my birthday is comeing up

  • I will miss the old courses. I wish they are still available in this game. I’m pretty sure a single sided BD can hold everything.

  • So why is a British development team having all their interviews screened on the American PlayStation Blog?

    That’s what I’m wondering.

  • #8

I agree completely. The split-screen PLUS online capabilities in Warhawk make for one of the best gaming experiences available on the PS3 to date.

In my opinion, no FPS or racing game should be without local split-screen these days. This trend towards online only is depressing and anti-social. We have friends. Real friends who are sitting next to us.

The PS3 supports up to 7 controllers? Well, give us a frickin reason to use them.

And let us take our four-man gang online against other people too.

    THAT’S gaming nirvana!

  • Looks great!
Been a diehard Motorstorm racer since the first one back in April.

I’ve seen it all, and I really like the natural feel of this game. It’s still the best rally/off-road game out there.

Evolution, just give us more of the GOOOOD, you know more interactivity with environments, more customization, etc. Let us become more personal with the game. I’d love to make my Scarecrow racer look like a scarecrow or have some kind of distinctive personality or look.

By the way, how ’bout a tournament mode ala Mario Kart for Motorstorm?

This could tie in well with the multiplayer, so my brother and I could be in the tournament against the computer and we’re just there battling it out.

By the way, don’t forget time of day and weather.

  • Is there a free ride mode where you can just have fun and not race, like in the ATV Offroad Fury series and MX Vs. ATV series????? ‘Cus MotorStorm 2 Would be the BEST game ever if there is. But even if the answer is no i’m still buyin’ this game no matter what.
