Introducing Qore: Taking you behind the curtain with PlayStation

721 0

Today we are announcing that Qore: Presented by the PLAYSTATION Network, a highly interactive, monthly lifestyle gaming program covering the world inside PLAYSTATION is on its way to PS3. Qore has been developed to give PS3 users early access to game related content at a level of quality, interactivity and depth. Everything is filmed in HD. Qore will feature exclusive news, developer interviews, in-depth game previews and behind-the-scenes looks at PlayStation games and special access to game demos, special beta invitations, game add-ons and other downloadable game-related content.

Qore

Our premier episode will be available on Thursday, June 5. The premier episode includes in-depth exclusive and never-before released content on upcoming PlayStation titles such as SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Secret Agent Clank, Soul Calibur 4 and Afro Samurai, as well as the latest Blu-ray Disc trailers, an exclusive SOCOM: Confrontation theme with an invitation to the SOCOM: Confrontation beta, art galleries and other surprises. We also know that many of you are big fans of Veronica Belmont, the widely-known host of numerous online video programs and podcasts and an avid gamer, so we’ve chosen her to be your host.

To get Qore, simply log onto PSN and go to the PLAYSTATION Store, as you would purchase any other form of downloadable content. Once the single Episode or annual subscription is purchased, that month’s episode will be downloaded under the “Game” heading on the Cross Media Bar (XMB). Users who purchase the “Qore Annual Subscription” will notice only that month’s episode is available to download. The following month, the new episode will automatically appear in your download list. The introductory price for Qore is $2.99 for a single episode and $24.99 for an annual subscription of 13 episodes, using your PLAYSTATION Network wallet.

As Peter Dille mentioned in a previous PLAYSTATION Network post, the broader service and community initiatives launching on the PLAYSTATION Network this year such as Qore, PlayStation Home and the Video Download Service are all evidence of our dedication to delivering an all-encompassing entertainment experience for PS fans. Qore is the first in a series of planned original programming specifically created for the PLAYSTATION Network community and we hope you enjoy it.

  • What idiot picked a chick as the host? Chicks know less about games than they know about serving sandwiches and refreshing frosty beverages.

  • @198

I don’t think these negative comments come from PS fans, a lot of these guys are just trolls who probably don’t own a PS3 a look at every chance to bash Sony.

I wish the PS Blog would tag PSN members so that we would know whether comments are coming from a PS3 owner or not.

  • Its like a PSN program/game

  • @cmargary

I dont know if your understanding the points people are trying to make. Like i mentioned a few posts earlier…the BLOG from my understanding was to provide the same information/interviews/previews/developers info and behind the scenes info and do it for FREE

I can understand if SONY wanted to charge for exclusive demo or beta invites but to undermine the basic purpose of this FREE BLOG for a PAID online Mag is not right.

thats my point…i’m not down for begging for free episodes of anything thats what the internet is for not PS store or XBL :)

    • Nothing is undermining the Blog, we\’re going to keep doing what we\’re doing. I\’ve seen Qore, and it\’s got content that the Blog team just can\’t produce.

  • @PsychoEddie

Yeah, that’s why Assassin’s Creed became so popular in the first place. (sarcasm)

Anyway many people wants more to look a girl than a guy in there believe me.

  • @188
    AAAAAHHHMEN!

I’ll pay Sony money to test out games to see if they are good enough to buy. I’ll just wait for a review.

  • I’m sorry, can somebody explain how this isn’t turning the PSN into a tiered service? You can dress this up in an interactive online show all you want, but 9/10 people who subscribe to this want the downloadable content. The demos and beta that were previously available free to PSN members, and I don’t think anyone actually believes otherwise. Especially for a show that delivers once a month, the content is going to be painfully OLD by the time it reaches. Way to keep the PSN free guys. I’m completely disappointed.

  • @XD9

Yeah I see your point… but if the PSN normally will not have that beta game like call of duty that we never had it just the other console and with this sony will have it it’s a plus don’t you think? for demos? tha’s bad… if will affect the other people without this is a shame like you said.

  • and btw.. I’m not saying either I will use this either… I have to see more of this before i will buy. But looks cool.

  • Qore sounds pretty awesome to me. I don’t mind paying a little for all of my PlayStation news wrapped up into one feature. Not at all. Sounds like it’ll save me some time off from having to visit various gaming news sites to get this info, plus there will be some nice extra perks. As long as it’s done well, and PSN & playing online is still free, I’ll give it a shot. If it’s good I’ll get a subscription. Looking forward to the first edition in any case.

  • If you start delaying demos and add-on content, you will be the same as Xbox Live Gold versus Xbox Live Silver, and will alienate people like me who hate the idea of paying for “early access” to something, when it’s an entirely artificial limitation imposed by the distributor. Formerly Microsoft, now Sony.

I am totally behind a Sony produced show with tons of info on their games and movies. Fine. Want to add custom themes, wallpapers, music, fine. Demos and DLC however…

Exclusive DLC? I’d like more detail on this point. If you want us to pay $2.99 to get a new Warhawk map via Qore, that’s fine. But if we’re expected to pay $2.99 for the *privilege* of purchasing the new Warhawk map for $7.99 from within Qore, that’s not okay. I’m not going to toss down $2.99 to get access to an “exclusive” character for PAIN. Forget about exclusive, make it a deal, make it a bargain.

If you treat Qore more as a monthly “bundle” of Video/DLC/Games, then I could see more value in it. For example, get next month’s Qore, which will have 2 hours of behind the scenes on Resistance. Include a Resistance 2 theme (which will come out on PSN when the game does), include some Wallpapers. And as a bonus there’s a PAIN character of your choice for free download this week from within Qore. The key is that none of this is delayed content, and none of it is “exclusive”, but just early. Please don’t try and convince me to pay $2.99 for a Resistance 2 demo, I won’t do it.

Overall I just fear this is an attempt to shoehorn in an Xbox Live style payment setup, where we pay to get demo on-time rather than delayed (or not at all), and themes and wallpapers will now be distributed this way. And while technically we wouldn’t be “paying” for those individually, we are paying for them via Qore.

  • @cmargary

I think if SONY cant secure a beta and MS can then SONY is just a lost cause LOL

but about what you said…If this service can secure an EXCLUSIVE beta then its worth it…but im not down for paying for a beta that the competition possibly and potentially would offer for FREE

  • and im definately NOT paying for information that was or is the purpose of this BLOG

  • Look some people are obviously misunderstanding why people are upset over this service. They are taking DEMOS and TRAILERS… putting it into this service and charging for it. Those should be free by default and have no delayed release if that’s what’s going to happen at all. If they don’t even release it to non paying PSN users then that’s even worse.

I can’t believe people are saying this is going to be great being charged for stuff that is already and should remain free (demos and trailers). In my opinion Sony is trying going to release this service testing the waters on how well it does and change PSN accordingly.

I wouldn’t mind if this service included betas and behind the scenes interviews. But to include what’s been accepted as free pretty since it’s conception is truly capitalization at its finest.

People need to talk with their money and NOT sign up for this service that is trying to capitalize on things that have always been free from day one (demos and trailers). I mean imagine if everyone started charging for demos online or lets say apple.com/trailers started charging you to see any of the newest movie trailers.

  • Sounds good to me. When is 2.4 firmware going to be released? Also, any chance that I can get my bluetooth headphones to work with my PS3? Thanks

  • @201 cduran02 | June 3rd, 2008 at 9:55 am

Look me up on the PSn Violater.

This is another terrible idea by Sony to further fracture your user base, good going.
As for the moderators who continue to ignore the outraged comments about the price, it does nothing to convince us to open our wallets.
Now I am not saying that QORE should be entirely free that would be unfair as people put work into the service and need to be paid, but your pricing model is broken.
Anyone that pays for this is a major part of the problem.

  • Also as people have mentioned… wasn’t this blog’s purpose pretty much that of Qore’s except it is free?

    @Violater | June 3rd, 2008 at 10:14 am

Agreed, I mean like I said earlier in my previous post. I don’t mind if it’s exclusive interviews and betas. But to charge for demos and trailers is plain stupid. The fate of PSN changing into a tiered service is really in the hands of the users and so far from reading the comments it doesn’t look good.

  • @Masxasm | June 3rd, 2008 at 10:17 am

It doesn’t look good at all, as people fall blindly into these situations all in the name of brand loyalty and hardly ever looking at the big picture.
It is all well and good for Sony to strive for originality, but I also think it would serve your clients better by at least matching the basic services being offered by the competition before breaking “new ground”.

  • Will there be any content available to watch on your PSP?

  • My only question: Why does it show up under the “Game” icon on the XMB? Seems to fit better within the “PlayStation Network” category. :P

  • @violater im a sony fan but this doesnt suit me at all.the pricing is far too high for digi context it’s should be 12.50 for a year at max.why is its 25 dollars?

  • Will Qore be accessible via remote play?
Also, be sure to check out:
    http://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2008/06/03/qore-what-can-we-expect-in-episode-1/

  • @ erico316 | June 3rd, 2008 at 10:36 am

I would like to know who thought this would be a good business model.
I urge everyone to not support QORE until it’s pricing structure is made more favorable and the overall PS3 online features brought up to par with the competitions offerings.

  • This is cool man But WHERE IS IN GAME XMB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hopefully it is coming in 2.40!!!!!!!!!!!

  • aslong as you keep giving away free games when you buy an episode(calling all cars is worth $9.99) i think you may have something.

  • I have a question on the beta part. Say if I am in GAP and a KZVIP. Will buying Qore give me any exrta betas that Gap would not. Seeing as I am a Gap member I have been in a lot of betas and with the KZ VIP I get a spot on the KZ2 beta. So would this be worth it to me to buy this?

  • I think you guys should read the first page of comments. There’s a response there.

    Hey Joe, you’re a KZ VIP? :|

  • Question:

Will there be an expiry date on Qore’s downloaded episodes or can we go back and view episodes as we please?

  • Well Damn Sony, I have to say this is quite interesting, In my post to last week on the Store Update post, I had a big response, to the lack of content, now this appears. I’d would say “Well Played” however, I do not yet know how this will turn out. I mean there is a potential of having content on the general store neglected for this Qore product, and thus we will have nothing week in and week out, which would be a problem. Also it makes me question if I were to buy the annual subcription, as how much usage would I really get out of it? I mean sure I’d like to use Exclusive Content of Videos and such, however Betas, Themes, Add-ons, plus other special content, will definitely be the selling point for many, and myself include, and thus I’d like to know if there will such demand be filled for my 3 or 25 bucks. One thing I’d like to know, is if there will be any notification of what’s to come in each release of the monthly Qore content. I think there should be as it allows for a person to access if they want the content for that given month as opposed to buying an annual subscription and being stuck with content that you’d rather not have. I do have to say that I like the idea, though I think its a great new move by Sony. My only hope is that it doesn’t rip people off, by giving stuff no one wants and/or becomes bland, as I’d have no problem paying for this, if it means that I have great content monthly. Thanks for the post :), I’ve made my decision and I’ll buy the first episode (Not annual, at least not until I get a feel for Qore). In any case however, its great to see this.

    @176

Think of a digital magazine. Vblogs cost to maintain, and thus is no exception, hell this is even better as I’m sure the content will be in HD (Which is going to cost in itself) and will be pay for all other supplies/labor, securing content, etc. If this was just a magazine that you read then I’d agree with you, however this is more like a Vblog of official content and other goodies.

  • Now we are going to pay for demos, themes, game trailers, yeah right???? Please concentrate in a basic feature like in game xmb before making us pay for things that are free now!!!!!!!!

  • Kind of off topic (but not really): Can our European friends please complain through the proper channels? I definitely understand your frustrations as I would be dissapointed if I were unable to participate in certain events (Qore, Warhawk GGL, etc) but this is a US blog to discuss, not a complaint forum that Europe is always left out.

Again, I completely sypmathize with you but every thread in here becomes a Euro complaint forum. Voice your complaints where it really counts; not here.

Back to Qore – way to much hype and speculation people. Sounds like people have alot of questions and instead of waiting for answers are jumping to wild conclusions. Calm the F down and get the official deal on it before you make up your own answers.

Qore sounds like a good idea; me buying it depends on content, length of episodes, and value of exclusive features. Bring it.

  • This seems really really cool! Good news for PS3!
One question thou! Why cant we in europe have this?
I know i would buy it if it was in the eu store! And som would many others, im sure of!
So please make this available in other regions other then US!!

  • That’s a slippery slope we’re going down here, charging for a podcast. The exclusive demos and beta invites might piss some people off.

  • Is this coming to Europe in any form?
    No? Didn’t think so.

  • @madgame: we’d complain elsewhere but there isn’t anywhere else to voice our worries.

ThreeSpeech offered to take my questions to Sony and get them answered. That was three months ago and I’ve got nothing out of them.

  • @233

It’s already happened. Seriously, if they take QORE down a XBL Gold route, it’ll undermine one of the biggest reasons why I got the PS3.

I imagine they’ll do some stupid stuff like take demos for highly awaited titles, put it on QORE and leave it from the free users for a week or two before they can get it, or they might not get it at all.

Sony, if that’s where you’re planning on going, I will tell you now, it’s a VERY bad move.

  • I’ve paid more money for worse content, so I’d pony up 3 bucks especially for entry into the Socom beta.

I’ll get the first issue, and if it seems worth it, I’ll subscribe, simple as that.

Additionally, I’m glad to hear we’ll be able to link several accounts to our PSN ID. Thanks Jeff.

  • I’m very concerned about this service. The idea of “exclusive content” and a charge service means that they will have to prevent some free content to keep the value of the payed content up. I’ve seen it in quite a few other services. At first it is truly extra content that would not exist if it wasn’t for the service, but when content is low, the payed service will take priority, and the free service will lose out.

It has happened a million times in a million places. AND IT WILL HAPPEN HERE.

I love my PS3, I really do. But I don’t want to lose out on content just because I don’t pay for a “free” service. If you really wanted to make money, you would make it free. From the video with Veronica Belmont, I am guessing that you will have ads in the content, which is just sad for a service you are paying for. If it was free, it would be available to more people, meaning it could bring in more ad revenue AND increase the value of the PS3 console.

As a free service, this would be a great advancement for the PS3. As a payed service, it could be very harmful to the PS3.

I don’t doubt the work you have all put forth to make this come about. And congratulations. I just am highly skeptical that the way it was deployed will make it a positive thing.

  • Hmm, interesting. I’ve been a PlayStaion Underground member since the good ol’ PS1 days and this reminds a lot of it.

  • Oh and lol @ people saying this is equivalent to X-Box live.

I don’t know where in their retard minds people equate a news service with betas that would otherwise not appear at all with playing games online.

This doesn’t fracture the userbase at all in fact. Blame Warhawk for doing that.

  • ooooooo linking of the Blog to PS3 users!
    I LIKE IT!
    Jeff is the man!

I love little bits of info like that!

  • YEAH…No longer will I go to my local retail box to pick up torn, beat up, slobbered on issues of OPM. No longer will tree’s bleed their proverbial blood. No longer will the mail woman be stealing my gaming magazines. “PRINT BASED MEDIA IS DEAD”. The technology has finally caught up with the hype! Thank You for bringing an Online Magazine to the PSN. I love it and I will be buying it.

  • I really don’t understand where some of the people are getting their information from. No where did they say they were going to withhold demos and etc… from non paying subscribers, just that they’d get exclusive content. Lets look at folklore, they released special “FREE” add-ons for special occassions but made you pay for the rest. If you didn’t want the other stuff you didn’t have to buy it. They aren’t saying they are going to give them the regular content of the PSN and give everyone else nothing. They’re saying on top of all the other content they are going to deliver to you every week, once a month they are going to throw in something extra into their E-Zine. But for some reason everyone feels like they should be entitled to everything they have to offer and nothing should be a privelage to someone who is paying for a service. In the real world this happens all the time, there is always somewhere where you can get a little bit more than everyone else by investing just a little bit more. As far as BETAS go, even if you chose to look at it as paying for it, you’re paying for the E-Zine and access to the BETA is privelage they give. But again everyone feels like they should have access to it. Before todays gaming consoles, only people “in the know” or people who were part of some premium service they payed for got this type of exclusive treatment. The other console got a beta for Bad Company and they had to reserve it. Everyone who pre-orders the game regardless of console gets to play the demo earlier than everyone else. It’s just incentives. They’re everywhere especially in the gaming world. But everyone here is freaking out because they are worried that they won’t continue to get the same content as before. But has Sony said that, no, but they haven’t denied it either. So just stay calm be excited for the new feature and see what happens. If they do undercut the content of the regular PSN Store then it’s simple don’t use their console and find one that makes you happier. The truth is people will always find a reason to complain. Go ahead, it is you’re opinion, however I find it hard for everyone to be complaining at this present time because no one knows the full extent of what this new service is going to mean for everyone else except for Sony. Call me naive, but truth is this is a good thing and if you don’t like it don’t use it. Oh and one more thing, everyone who is complaining about future services, lets be logical for a moment, how much money and resources do you think is going into something like HOME, while the overall aspect of the service is going to be free, how can you expect them to recoup their investment other than by microtransactions and charging for additional items and what not. They aren’t going to charge for anything thats going to make you not utilize their service, only extras that you don’t need, just want. And lets not forget about the video service, how much money, liscences, agreements, it takes to secure the ability to provide us with movies for our enjoyment. I hope people wouldn’t be naive and expect that to be free as well! We should all expect a charge with a service like that and hopefully a reasonable one as I’m sure it will be. And again if someone finds it not reasonable, then simply just don’t purchase any movies and move on.

  • I’m not sure whether this is a good thing or a bad thing. For some time now I’ve been hoping that they would come out with some sort of “PS3 show” that we could watch, something similar to the video game stuff they have on G4tv. However, the test is whether this will have the content to make it worth the price tag. From the description, it sounds like there’s some original content, but also a lot of other stuff like demos and themes and bluray trailers that we should be getting for free anyway on the PSN. So my question is, are these exclusive demos and stuff going to be over and above what we already get in the weekly updates? Because sometimes the updates aren’t that great. I know I wouldn’t want to pay money for the teasers and movie trailers we already get every week. Nobody should pay to watch advertisements. No, in order for this to be worth it, it would have to actually be a legitimate show, with actual exclusive content. And since it’s coming out once a month, it would have to be good content too, not the junk that we can find daily on kotaku and engadget.

  • @xxxXXX-Sigil-XXXxxx – why does it matter?

It’s a demo….they aren’t preventing you from buying the game or renting it.

This is just like Gamepro, EGM, and every other gaming magazine. These have exclusive demos packed in their plastic sleeves all the time. Qore just happens to be an all electronic mag that you can buy from the PSN.

People need to calm down…….way to jump to conclusions. Sound like a bunch of crazies.

  • Oh…and one more thing. I don’t know why everyone is complaining. The same people who read these “free” blogs, go to their local retail box and “pay” for gaming mags, or “pay” for subscriptions to gaming mags. Those paid subscriptions or issues haven’t impacted the PSN, so why is everyone crying. I simply look at this like its another gaming magazine. If Qore was a print based magazine with a demo disc in it, people would be excited about the new magazine on the news stands and rushing out to get it or subscribing. Well, this is nothing more then
an online magazine with demos and videos. So your getting this clean crisp online magazine, that hasn’t been thumbed through a million times, and no one has stole the demo disc out of the packaging, or if you subscribe, there is no wondering why your issue is late, or didn’t arrive at all, or the mail person stealing the demo disc, or it arriving torn up. So I can’t wait, and yes I will be getting it. Thanks for doing this!

I am glad you don’t think it’s awesome wowsome.
    ><

  • So, the headlines are reading something like this, “Qore: New PS3 Online Mag Charges You For Game Demos” (Wired).

Given what we have been told so far this is not entirely true. What we are being offered is that Qore content will only be content that would not be available otherwise.

So, what determines when a demo is available to PSN at large and when it is a Qore exclusive? Access to beta code and otherwise is understandable. But, there are a limited number of developers taking time out to make demos and given to resources and the risk involved that number will likely continue to decrease.

I want to believe this Qore service will be a compliment to PSN. But, can you please tell us how PSN at large will not be robbed of demos that we may have been able to receive for free.

  • @42 reenigne | June 3rd, 2008 at 5:27 am

Holy snap! We have to pay to play demos after this thursday. It’s pretty clear from (amurphy replied on June 3, 2008 at 9:32 am) reply.

Which means we can only play online for free.

  • Question……………………….

Do we have to pay the $25 for the Socom Beta or will we be able to purchase that for $2.99???????????????????????

Socom…love it and the theme song, Dun,Dun,Dun,Dun,Dinah,Dinah,Dun,Dun
