Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 coming to PSN today

What’s going on, PS3 playaz? I’m pleased to announce that Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 is now available on the PlayStation Store for only $9.99! The spiritual successor to the classic Commando and Mercs series arrives with the frenetic arcade-action you remember, combined with 3D HD graphics and 3 player online and local co-op. (You can even ride tanks and jeeps together!)

History note: Where did the name “Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3” come from? Well aside from our penchant for extremely long game titles (see the entire Street Fighter series), the name is taken from the original 1985 Japanese coin-op, “Senjo No Okami”, which means, you guessed it, Wolf of the Battlefield.

Here’s an exclusive gameplay clip:

And here’s a cool wallpaper featuring the new Commandos, Wolf, Fox and Coyote:

Ok, I know many of you are disappointed that the game doesn’t come with a Street Fighter HD Beta. We did everything we could to try to make it happen, but bottom line, we’re working hard to make a game that you’ll be extremely happy with. As an added bonus, we’re giving you the opportunity to play Commando a week before the XBLA version releases. Finally, for all the PlayStation Street Fighter fans, we are planning some cool stuff for you, so stay tuned.

But I digress, Commando 3 is a great pick-up-and-play game for you and your friends, with that old school, arcade style flavor. You also won’t be disappointed with the graphics since this game makes fantastic use of the PS3 shaders, depth of field, dramatic lighting and particle effects. For a downloadable game at $9.99, you can’t go wrong! Try it out.

Good game. You guys need to get the demo up soon so people know it’s not another Rocketmen. This isn’t the kind of game a lot of people are going to blind buy.

  • John I just came to congratulate you guys at Capcom for making this game so much fun!

I bought Rocketmen when it came out and I have to be honest that game is a joke. It feels like it is a college student’s midterm project or something.

Sorry if that was harsh but the poin I’m trying to make is Commando 3 is LIGHT YEARS better than Rocketmen and I’m glad I picked it up. Hope Rocketmen was an anomaly and future Capcom downloadable games are of the same quality as Commando 3.

I’m really looking forward to Bionic Commando: Rearmed and Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix.

Here’s hoping for Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Final Fight, Power Stone, and MEGA MAN 2 remakes!

Emphasis on the Mega Man 2.

    • I\’m glad you enjoyed the game. Rearmed is so good, you\’re going to be surprised by the little details. Remix is great too. I know it\’s taking awhile, but I think it\’s be well worth the wait.

    • My awesome typos FTW!

  • I second that.. Santana…

Mega Man 2 on the PSN … Would be sweet …

John whens the last time it’s came out on a Playstation console? on the PSP? a couple years?

    • I beleive the last time Mega Man 2 appeared on a PS system was a part of the Mega Man Anniversary Collection for the PS2 in 2004. But I could be wrong.

      Wood Man FTW!

    • \”beleive\”? ugh.

      lol.

  • yeah, Im liking Commando so far a lot!

also John foward this to Capcom…

Power Stone 2 with online play on the PSN! gotta love the no size limit thing eh :)

I second the Mega Man suggestion. I know Mega Man Powered Up sold poorly, but it was a fantastic game, and like Okami, I think it deserves a second chance. And an XBLA/PSN port of Mega Man Powered Up could benefit a lot from the hype Little Big Planet is getting.

  • Re-make one of the classic Mega Man games (i.e. Mega Man 2, Mega Man 3, Mega Man X) in the same manner in which Bionic Commando: Rearmed is currently being handled.

    That would be AMAZING.

  • Awesome.

  • Quick question: How does the multiplayer work? Is it just online, or are you able to play with 3 friends offline as well? I would really like to be able to enjoy this when friends are over. Thanks!

  • I voted for Final Fight as a remake. Good memories, plus I think that PSN is lacking in the “side-scrolling fighting” department. Also, it’s something different from the typical fighting games that already have many alternatives on both XBL and PSN.

Anyway, I won’t buy WotB:Commando until I can get my wife to play around in the (soon to come?) demo and see if she’ll enjoy it.

One game I’ll buy blindly though is Bionic Commando Rearmed. The team’s delay message on the website alone sold me. Love the team’s creativity but a little disappointed about the delay.

    • It\’s coming soon, don\’t worry. Until then, you have Commando and soon, 1942, to keep your attention. you need to buy Commando just for the link with Bionic Commando. Do you know what that link is?

  • I had a blast with this game so far and it has brought back many old school memories when games didn’t have to be so intricate. This is just FUN!

    • I saw a bad review out there, I won\’t mention names, but they just didn\’t get it. At it\’s core, this is an old school arcade game, back to the basics fun, with upgraded 1080P graphics. You can paick up and play this game at a party and everyone could relate.

  • Woah cool game! Its awesome your supporting the psn! I would love to c power stone 2! It was awesome on dream cast and psp! I VOTED 4 IT IN THE POLL! Marvel vs capcom would be great but isnt there licensing issues? Anyways if u do port power stone 2 make sure to improve graphics, add more customizations and crafting ,stages! And well make a power stone 2.9!

  • lol. I hope the top 3 games in the poll make it to both systems. This should provide an incentive for a sequel if power stone 2 sells good right??? This is gonna be awesome. Btw Commando is tightttt!!!

    • We\’re committed to releasing the best titles possible from our vault to the PSN. We\’re also working on releasing all new content as well. Glad you\’re having fun with Commando!

This poll isn\’t just for show. We really want to give the fans what they want!

  • I hate how IGN gave this game a bad review. I bet a lot of people didn’t buy it thanks to IGN.

I just bought it yesterday and it was really fun. I even got one of my friends to buy it and we were playing online–lots of fun.

Can I suggest something though? I noticed that when you play online, there can only be one person from each console playing online. I tried playing with my cousin and I on one console and my friend on his and it wouldn’t let my cousin join :| Please patch it?

I would also like for the Mega Man series to keep going, especially the X series (not a big fan of Battle Network or anything that isn’t Classic or X :)). Or how about remaking the arcade ones, I forgot the name but you play as Mega Man and other people can be Protoman and Bass and you fight the bosses from each Mega Man game.

    • I\’ll pass on the info to the producer.

Wow, a lot of requests for Mega Man. I think something may be brewing…

  • As a person who use to work with an arcade distributor (man, that is dating me) I can say that while the graphic style has changed the spirit is still there. The developers did a great job of retaining the original “fun”. With the 1942 sequel and Bionic Commando coming soon it looks like us retro gamers are going to be in 7th heaven. These games bring back so many great memories… now if they would only bring back all the quarters ;)

Now for an update to Black Tiger, Gun Smoke, Cabal (but you really need to use a track ball) and U.N. Squadron would really make my day. *hint*hint*

On a side note Plunder looks good and can’t wait to see it in action and any news on Talisman.

    Again, great job.

  • John, I’m guessing the link is Joe?

    Ok… I have no idea.

  • The original Mega Man would be a sweet one to give the ‘Bionic Commando: Rearmed’ treatment!

  • This looks great, but the frame rate around 0:22 in the game-play video looks really low. Does it really play in 2-10 FPS during intense parts?

  • is the online play for this region lock?
