MGS4 Continues A Year of PS3 Blockbusters

Scott Steinberg's Avatar + Posted by Scott Steinberg on Jun 12, 2008 // VP of Product Marketing

We know that many PlayStation and Metal Gear fans have been waiting for today, and it was a pleasure to premiere Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots to the PS3 software line-up at midnight last night! PlayStation and the Konami team have enjoyed bringing this blockbuster franchise to the PlayStation nation for the last decade, with many of our PlayStation fanbase growing up on the game.

Thanks to PS3’s Blu-ray technology, this is the biggest Metal Gear Solid yet and sets a new benchmark in the gaming industry as the first PS3 game developed on a dual layer Blu-ray disc. This means the Konami team is able to deliver more cutting-edge graphics, more expansive gameplay and more surround sound. Add a DUALSHOCK 3 controller into the mix and you’ll find yourself right in the middle of the action.

PS3 MGS Bundle

For our PS2 enthusiasts, this is a great time to consider upgrading to a PS3 with the Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots PS3 80GB bundle ($499), which includes the popular 80GB PS3, a copy of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, a DUALSHOCK 3 controller, as well as a free download for the PSN title, PAIN.

With highly anticipated titles such as Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Grand Theft Auto IV and SingStar and with Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, this is only the beginning of an ongoing software avalanche for PS3 that includes titles such as LittleBigPlanet, SOCOM: Confrontation, MotorStorm Pacific Rift and Resistance 2 that only PS3 owners will be able to exclusively enjoy. We look forward to your feedback on Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

all of these games for the ps3, but not a one of them is a rpg. not that i’m not looking forward to playing mgs4 or lbp, but rpgs are what made me buy into the playstation brand. the ps2 and psp are chocked full of great rpgs. what about showing the ps3 some rpg love? i might have to switch over to that other companies system to play my rpgs if you know what i mean.

Cmon without MGS4 I wouldn’t be having a PS3 right now so please, do not act like this is all “thanks to PS3′s power”. It’s this attitude that makes Sony look arrogant.

now all we need is porn games :D
what there is no sex in the world? it’s strange how prudish games have become thanks to American politics.

u can buy porn at every gas station, but games now that’s just bad? games should be rated like movies not higher.
in some countries in Europe MGS4 has a 16 rating, an M rating would make me think it contains gross and hardcore porn stabbing…

the rating system is pathetic compared to movies…

I’ve been holding off buying a PS3 for a long time now, I even skipped out on the 60GB now I cant find it anywhere. I wanted so much to get this bundle that I waited outside of Virgin Mega store in Timesquare to get my bundle plus have it signed by Kojima. By the time I get to the register they were all out of bundles and I had to settle for just the game. I spent the whole day today looking for the bundle I checked all the websites from Bestbuy, Gamestop [about 20 stores I called] circuit city, walmart, target, sony sytle etc [you get the picture]. Now you come and tell me its time to get a PS3 MGS4 bundle when there’s none available? I got a MGS4 and a MGS4 LE and nothing to play it on!!! Everyone knew MGS4 was going to be a big deal and you dont make enough? And don’t tell me to get a 40gb cuz it doesnt have a wifi and memory slots, it’s crap compared to the 80gb which even have backwards compatible. A lot of people wonder why the ps3 is doing bad, its because of mismanagement. You know I’ve only seen 1 commercial for MGS4 so far and i think it’s on youtube.

This is definitely the BEST game released so far for the PS3. The PS3 bundle with Metal Gear Solid is selling like hot cakes. I am currently in Melbourne, and some of the game retail shops have already sold out the PS3 bundle and besides that the only way to purchase a PS3 now in Australia is to purchase the PS3 bundle with the Metal Gear Solid Game. This will definitely boost the MGS’s sales figures and Konami should relieved that the MGS game is really kicking [DELETED] not only in the US and Japan but also other parts of the world. I am really really happy to see the PS3 momentum is still building up and going strong. Seriously hope games like these will bring back the glory days of the PlayStation Brand. Most important thing Sony should do now is to protect its exclusives games and for goodness sake pls Sony, take good care of your third party developers. Because of games like these will be one of the most important factor in winning the console war. We have recently lost an exclusive to Xbox which is the Starocean 4 game. This has disappointed a lot of RPG loving fans because the playstation brand is well known for its wide variety of RPG games and thats also one of the reason why people purchased the PS3. So if any of you guys would like to see more RPG games on the PS3 please sign the petition for Sony to have more RPG games. http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?ps31134

I bought my PS3 system last October after enjoying my PS2 for years. I was on the fence about upgrading my system with Sony and ultimatly made the decision over XBOX and Wii when the store clerk told me about Metal Gear Solid 4. That “solid”ified my purchase and I’ve been awaiting this day ever since. It has arrived. My work day has suffered, and I am now waiting for the Celtics to beat the Lakers so I can dive back in tonight. NICE!

MGS4 is totally awesome. I’m enjoying the game 100% however while playing Im getting a ton of messages from friends on my friends-list asking questions about the game. Which means I have to stop every now and then to go and reply to people and relaunch the game. That’s a total pain in the ass. You guys really need to do something about this issue ASAP. I really cant take it anymore. Quit & Message friends & Relaunch, Quit & Message friends & Relaunch, Quit & Message friends & Relaunch, Quit & Message friends & Relaunch…I’ve done this over 12 times already in the past hour. >_<

If anyone is looking for a signed copies of the MGS 4/ with dog tags let me know. I got a few. Signed by Hideo Kojima, The voice of Otocon (Christopher Randolph) and
Model Yumi Kikuchi.

I went to my local WalMart righ after work (5:00 AM) and I thought for sure by the time I get there there would be a line. I made it there at 5:30 AM and not a single gamer was in sight. I only had to wait another hour and a half till they opened and by that time two more people showed up for the same reason I did. We started talking about how messed up it would be they would only get two bundles then we all thought… “NAH!! they should have at least 4 of them.” As soon as they opened we made our way to the electronics and the lady at the cashier already knew what we were there for without asking. But guess what? They only had two of them. So I jumped to the opportunity to speak and claim one of them right away and so did the next dude. The third guy had a look of disbelief on his face and almost wanted to cry.

Anyway, as I was being rung up I asked about the $100.00 gift card that you get for gettin a Blu Ray player and she just told me it was being included automatically. SWEET! As soon as I paid for the system I went ahead and got an additional Dual Shock 3 controller and a couple of Blu Ray movies to go with my bundle. Happily I walked away and took my goodies home.

Oh and something called Home should be coming. I wodner why we aren’t hearing much about it? Does Sony regret revealing it too early now? Good to see the MGS4 bundle selling well, but will we hear of a price cut at E3? A new model if this MGS4 is indeed to be limited.

Oh and for all new owners, do yourself a favour and buy Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.

Here an idea to get people to upgrade.
PS3 commercial

Starts out with a PS2 in the background and a really big fat chick in a bra and panties lying on a bed, smiling at you.

Narrator says. “Everyone has at least one in their past.” Replace with hot chick and PS3 in background. “Upgrade Today, starting at $399″.

PlayStation logo and that’s a wrap. 15 second ad that gets to the point. :)

One idea i thought that can be implemented in the XMB of the Playstation 3. Not too sure if its any good.

In the background of the XMB, usually there will be wallpapers or whatever themes there are. How about trying run game trailers or game news in the background of the XMB, so while users are browsing through the XMB, they can see trailers playing in the background. In a way, it sort of as a advertising kind of a thing but its more of a advertisement for games. And users have the option to turn off the application if they find it too annoying running in the background. Maybe Sony can even run the Qore program on the background of the XMB. All i am trying to suggest is that Sony can reach out to its gamers more, show users what upcoming games Sony has in store.

The whole register with Konami for online with those game ID’s ruined online for me. Especially that I can’t change my name, & the people I played with aren’t in “Players Met”. The maps online aren’t that great either. But what I do like about online is that I can text & chat- best feature!
As for the game itself, I liked it very much. Got kinda hard & I didn’t know where to go, so then I switched online. I have never played Metal Gear Solid before, and this game was great. I’m glad I got it, a little disappointed by the online though.

I’m surprised Sony did not introduce the Dualshock 3 for Europe with the MGS4 pack. Seems like the perfect opportunity and the fact two regions have it and one doesn’t seems all the more odd. I know this blog is UScentric but do upper management communicate across regions or are you all doing your own thing? The problem with this non-standardised approach in a globalised, Internet linked world is that people in other regions feel left out and this creates unhappy customers. Anyway, looking forward to playing MGS4 and hope to hear some news on Infamous, LA Noire and some JRPGs soon.
