A new PLAYSTATION 3 firmware update (v2.36) will be launching soon, improving system stability when playing select PlayStation format software titles. We’re also happy to officially report that the 2.40 system software update for PS3 will include “XMB” access in-game. The update will also include “trophies,” an exciting new feature that we’ll be providing more details on soon, as well as some other new enhancements. We’ve talked about some of this on the blog previously and know that many of you can’t wait to get your hands on these features. You can expect us to share all of the official details shortly.

mpeg has been supported since day one :D Though for some reason allot of my mpeg videos crash with an error in the middle of playing or the video stops but the audio continues for awhile before it shows up the error :D

i still think rather than the list of trophies/acheivements there should be like a trophie room.(no idea if there doing it or not)but they should.
I think this update has actually made GTAIV unstable online. Nothing but issues when playing last night.
Might be something worth looking into Sony!!

…why even bother confirming 2.40 in-game XMB without a date? We already knew it was coming eventually. How about a WHEN Sony. I’m hoping the WHEN comes before E3 ends.
They are doing that but that will be in home. The have to accommodate people that don’t want to have to virtually walk around to get things done :D
Plus 3rd parties probably don’t see a point in integrating trophy’s right now because home wont be released any time soon.
2.40 will mean that when home is released we will already have a load of games partially compatible.
So ask yourself this, do you want to start earning trophy’s now or do you want to wait for home?
well id like to get trophys now. b/c home is going to take a really long time. i mean if u can only view ur trophies in home i might wana wait.

@248 that is what i thought HOW can you patent the IDEA of in game music i think they included using a games console so SONY could not add it to the PS3 but games can allow you to play custom music and this is the way around the patent!!

you can’t patent an idea, but you can patent a physical object or a piece if code. As long as Sony writes their in-game soundtracks code from scratch, they’ll be fine.
Microsoft would get laughed at for trying to patent that :D :P
And if they tried to sue anyone over it they would be screwed because they would have no chance of winning because it is essentially trying to patent multitasking. And whoever they tried to sue would be able to counter sue them for lots of money and actually win :D :P
And when better filters for PS2 titles, mkv and support for subtitles in movies in simple file formats like srt, sub, ssa …
Apparently one can patent an idea in the states. In Europe however it is impossible.

well it would be easier if you’d just ask if they allow homegrown codecs to be installed onto the ps3 system. But we all know developers don’t like the idea of that.

If your PS3 is getting hot at all I would remove it from your entertainment center. Sony Customer Service told me that the PS3 should have sufficient space to “Breathe”. I got the blinking red light of death and the service center told me that the silicon on the processing chip had melted and oozed all over the rest of the interior of my PS3. Best of luck to you my friend…you will have to pay Sony $150 bucks when yours craps out.
One more thing…
I have played mostly FPS games since I bought PS3 (R:FOM, COD4). Has anyone else had to buy multiple controllers due to the analog sticks not staying centered after prolonged use?? I have never abused my controllers and have kept them on a table when not used. Since 12/06 I have gone through two controllers and am now on my third one. Did Sony manufacture cheap systems and controllers and charge a premium price anyway???

You are correct. This is also why Sony will NEVER sell ps2 games on the playstation network, only ps1 games. They won’t sell something that will only work on a fraction of their consoles.

Actually, that’s no longer accurate. With the newer fabrication methods sony has been able to bring the production costs down on the ps3. This is especially true for the 40gb model which doesn’t contain the flash card reader nor any of the ps2 hardware used for backwards compatibility. I’m not sure about the 80gb model, but I think they’ve managed to break even on that one as well.

Hey Eric….any word on 2.40? I’m sure you can’t give us a date or you already would have. But what about those details you said were coming shortly…think you can answer a few of the questions that have been asked on here:
1)Is there a cumulative score, like “GamerScores”?
2)Do you have a list of games that are trophy compatible, music compatible?
3)Will games have to be replayed to get the trophies or “GamerScores”?
4)What are the “other new enhancements”?

i’m not sure if this is the right area for this I just got a MGS4 bundle and have been unsuccesful in updating the system software via internet, download and put on SD Card, Memory stick ProDuo, I keep getting corrupt data and I have reformatted the mem sticks on the PS3. anyone else hear about this problem contacted Sony but only gave me the update instructions again.
ive never heard of that happening. (on any system for that.) mabye it has some thing to do with the new way there making the systems and some one made a mistake on urs..
and most likely a few more.
Do you think in the next update you can include something that lets us copy files from other media servers on our network and save them directly to the PS3?

@633 you can already with a upnp share. It lets you stream movies, tv shows, and pics to the ps3.
Its sort of like a samba share but cooler because it can send information like id3 tags and album art over the share.
Not sure whether the specification in the ps3 has the id3/album art support but its still pretty useful none the less.
I would be more inclined to use my ps3 as a media center though if I could use it as a upnp server so that I could share the music on the ps3 to other upnp devices around the house.

Yeah… Typical Sony. Only games I really liked, were MGS4, and Rfom of all the ps3 exclusives. We lost a [DELETED] of exclusives we should have had. (GTA4, and DMC) And what happened to the Tales of series?
With the exception of home, Rfom 2, and the FF series, I’m losing faith with the ps3. I mean come on, I know the PS3 is sweet and all, but live kicks our asses. In-game chat, music, and gamerscore.
(I don’t mind too much about graphics, the differences with the ps3/360 graphics cards are so minute. It really depends on how the devlopers want to do a good port for the ps3 or not.)
So with all that in mind;
Get better exclusive titles.
Release Home, and downloadable movies.
Most importantly? Online work. trophies, in-game chat, music, the blah blah.
I’ll be flamed for this, and could care less. I dropped a few months worth of food for a college boy for this baby, and all I’m getting is puke on my shirt.
Sony, less “coming soon” [DELETED], we’d like results.

many things were promised in that interview by Eric Lempel himself: cross-game invites, an achievement system (eric didn’t necessarily say it would be point-based like xbox live, but he did say that Home’s trophies are only a PART of a bigger achievements system, which was quite interesting to hear), in-game xmb, cross-game communications (talking to your friends while playing a game, so you don’t have to quit the game to actually text/voice/video chat with them), and custom soundtracks were all promised.
Is all of this coming in firmware update 2.4 for the ps3 eric? THAT WOULD BE SOOOO GREATT!!!!! after all, you guys do keep promises. You said the Playstation Network would extend to PSP. It has; the PS Store is now on PC, so you can connect your PSP to it.
i hope you guys REALLY make firmware 2.4 a big one, because its already sounding like one! if it had all of these features, in my opinion (and i’m sure many other people are thinking the same way) IT WOULD BEAT ALL COMPETITION FOR SURE!! especially xbox live.

I think the firmware update is going to make the PS3 do everything it was suppose to do in the beginning video chat while playing the game all features that will be in xbox live ver2 as well as home all of this birth of CELL NETWORK EVERY COMPUTER WITH SPEs IS GOING TO BE ONE BIG CPU helping each other like CLUSTERS of PS3 AND IBM ROADRUNNER AS THE SPINE MAKING THE PS3 IN TO PS4 merging in the network
