A new PLAYSTATION 3 firmware update (v2.36) will be launching soon, improving system stability when playing select PlayStation format software titles. We’re also happy to officially report that the 2.40 system software update for PS3 will include “XMB” access in-game. The update will also include “trophies,” an exciting new feature that we’ll be providing more details on soon, as well as some other new enhancements. We’ve talked about some of this on the blog previously and know that many of you can’t wait to get your hands on these features. You can expect us to share all of the official details shortly.

Finally, in-game communicatons. I can’t wait for the update. I’ll be checking frequently so I can get the details.
I sincerely hope 2.4 comes before E3 with 2.41 which will hopefully catch all the bugs that happen once, 2.4 is outside of a controlled environment, coming before E3 as well.
It may be a big deal for Sony but the press will spin as pathetic that Sony is figuratively beating its chest over finally bearing some semblance to the other HD platform’s integration which they had since launch. We’ve almost caught up is not an impressive bullet on a Powerpoint presentation.
Not to mention that the time spent introducing 2.41 and trophies could be better spent being devoted to the actual games with the integration and trophies worked in to complement the games as opposed to taking time away from it.
In game xmb isnt gonna be so great if we cant cross can voice chat or send voice messages.

I heard that they were ironing out a few bugs for in game XMB, but if they are announcing it officially that means they are close to being bug free with in game XMB.. so I’d say maybe 2weeks from a month from now we will see it :)

That’s awsome news…but does the firmware update comes with Playstation Network Cards?….(i don’t have a credit card and i can’t wait for the new maps and characters for metal gear online)…Most of my Playstation and Playstation 2 games work just fine…but sometimes right after the Playstation 2 logo the screen flikers. Why is this?

Will the trophies be visible by other people on your friend’s list? Because the PSN profiles aren’t the greatest no offense. It’d be better if we could have more than a line for About us and have a profile that shows more than what language we speak…

In game xmb will be good cause of messaging, but I really want custom soundtracks on ps3/ps2/and ps1 games and my wish will be fulfilled!
yo cant they just skip to 2.40 that is the most anticipated one, knowing sony they would release 2.36 in june-july and release 2.40 september-october. before all the good games get here they better have the updates ready so they dont mess up gamers play time.

Thats not gonna be a Huge change I say add voice chat and voice messaging itl really make this system much better online. Im sure itl have my 2nd most wanted feature (music player) but thats not comfirmed. Imn not saying itl sux any in game menu is better then the current black screen of boringness we have now. Just if that would ass all the features and maybe more that the 360 offers i can maybe justifie some of the stuff i say to my friend about ps3 being MUCH better as of right now its not.

dude…if im not mistaking you have complained on NUMEROUS occasions about wanting in-game xmb and custom soundtracks and now your pulling a 360 (pardon the reference) and saying SONY can keep in-game xmb…dude make up your mind or just keep your mouth shut!
If only PSp firmware was as good as the PS3’s, can we have 2.40 first? I don’t want to replay MGS4 again without the added extra of trophies. Can’t wait for the update!!

will look forward to seeing what games support trophies and how well they work out. Hopefully it’s nicer then achievements in that there isn’t going to be a forced amount required in each game this way the trophies will actually feel like an accomplishment on some level.

Thanks. I bought a 360 about 2 years ago and sold it about 5 months later(got bored with it). Fast forward to now and I have 2 PS3s that I use for gaming and streaming videos, pics, music to my tvs. The major issue that I have seen with the PS3 really is the lack of in-game xmb. After being used to a 360 the PS3 was way behind in that respect which is frustrating.
Now that PS3 will have in-game XMB the major issues that I personally see with the PS3 are gone. All that are left IMHO are minor things like more codecs and containers support for videos(.mov). It is a pain to record some HD content with my avchd camcorder and not be able to play it directly on the PS3. I have to use ffmpeg or similar programs to remove the raw x264 stream and place it inside a .mp4 container to play it on the PS3. Needless to say that is a PITA :).
Congrats on the announcement. This is something that will definitely feel important for a majority of your users IMHO..

Really cool that the announcement was finally made.
To anyone confused about why we are going to see a stability update before the 2.40 update I think I have an idea as to why it is being done this way.
In game xmb required allot of the xmb code to be rewritten.
I am assuming here that it was not very viable to halt work on other feature enhancements so they forked the code and set aside a smaller development team for the in game xmb fork(this would explain why it took so long).
Its now probably a good bit into the final stage which is merging the ingame xmb fork into the main build.
So some backend stuff will be replaced and some will remain.
The stuff that will remain needs to be optimized for the merge.
Hence update 2.36

Will firmware 2.36 fix actual PS1 backward compatibility, or does it just fix general PS3 game stability problems?
If it’s the former, I’m much more excited about 2.36, since I’m still waiting for 3 PS1 games to be fixed that I really want to play!
