Firmware v2.40 FAQ

1,729 0

Hi again! It’s great to see the positive reaction to the unveiling of system software update v2.40. We can’t wait for you to finally go hands-on with XMB access in-game and the Trophy system – and it’s less than 2 days away. Not surprisingly, a number of you have posed questions both here and on other forums. Here are answers to the most frequently asked questions.

Will voice-messaging/private chat be featured in 2.40 as well? If not, can we expect to see this feature added in the future?

We are evaluating the opportunity to offer voice chat, but for this update, we wanted to focus on text messaging as the key priority for communications that our users have asked for.

Can you use the web browser in game?

No, you must exit the game before browsing the internet.

Will In-Game XMB come up during playback of PS2 games, Blu-Ray discs, and DVDs?

The XMB is an exclusive feature for PS3 game titles. Accessing the XMB during gameplay was the top request from our users, which we focused on for this update. However, we continually engage PS3 owners for feedback and will evaluate the opportunity to offer XMB access during movie playback in the future.

Can we go to the display settings and change anything there in-game (resolution, input, etc)?

No, you must exit the game before changing these settings.

Will it be possible to change in-game the sound output?

Yes, sound output changes are supported.

Will we be able to access the PLAYSTATION Store while in-game?

No, but you can view your downloads in progress.

Will we be able to stream music (either via media server or USB drive) for custom soundtracks or is it relegated to music stored on the HDD?

Currently only music stored on the HDD is accessible in games that support this feature. We’d also like to reiterate that Firmware v2.40 merely enables custom soundtracks. It’s up to developers to include this feature in upcoming games (or to patch existing ones).

Does 2.4 enable cross game invites? Will it down the line?

No, cross-game invites are not available in this system software update. We are evaluating opportunities to expand on the new features delivered in 2.40.

Will trophies be mandatory for all games release here on out?

We are working with developers to ensure that Trophies are supported across the board in the future.

Where is each player’s trophy stat info held? I am going to upgrade my hard drive and I don’t know if the trophies will still be on my account if I earn some and then get a new hard drive.

Trophies will be attached to users’ PSN ID. Trophy data needs to be synchronized to the online account on PSN to be transferred to the new PS3 system.

Will the patch automatically allocate unlocked trophies according to your saved files or would you have to do it again?

    No, Trophies aren’t retroactive.

Can we view PSN profiles/Trophies from a PC using a Web browser? Will there be an API for web developers to access the PSN data, so online profiles can be created?

We’re evaluating these opportunities to expand where Trophies can be experienced.

Can you only compare trophies with friends that are online?

As long as a friend has a PSN account, you can compare trophies with them regardless of their online status.

Is there a limit to how many trophies the devs can put set by Sony?

There’s not a limit on number of trophies, but there’s a value assigned to each trophy. Developers must balance out the trophies that are available to stay within an overall value based on whether the game is considered large-scope or small-scope. Essentially, a user that has unlocked every trophy in one game would have the same level as a user that unlocked every trophy in another title, all titles (depending on scope) have the same overall impact on a users’ level.

Will new games have a cool little icon on the back saying “trophy compatible?”

We’re currently working on how Trophy support will be messaged to the consumer on our software packaging.

When you get a trophy, does it make a noise?

Currently, no. How quickly things can change – there *will* be a sound effect when you unlock a Trophy.

    What is Eric’s favorite cheese?

    Mozzarella

Once again, we will continue to evaluate opportunities to enhance the PLAYSTATION 3’s system software throughout the console’s life cycle. Consumer feedback has contributed greatly to the contents of Firmware v2.40, and continues to be appreciated. Don’t forget, this Firmware will be available for download on July 2nd.

  • hijacker77 one big different between the 360 and PS3….PS3 FREE online service compared to paid for online 360. To me that’s a huge difference that I’ll accept these type of updates with promises of much more to come. Remember Blu ray discs have a huge capacity to build on so I’m sure there’s more to come on the PS3 platform. I thought about 360 too, but with the red light problem, NO thanks.

  • Personally the update was great i knew there was no chance of voice chat at this point in time(too close to e3). My only complaint is that Eric kind of teased us with the music ability. As of right now my only want is for Sony to keep the good work up and at least get all of there older exclusive titles patched because i bought all of them and need a reason to go back through them

  • ^^^^ BTW get mgs4 patched please

  • Question to anyone but especially Sony. I share my PS3 with other users. My frind unlocked a trophy in Super Stardust HD this morning. I logged in under my PSN name a few minutes ago to see if I could get the same trophy and I completed the same task but no trophy was given to me. Please don’t tell me that only one user per console can get trophies. Maybe some of the readers here can verify this for me on thier consoles if they have multiple PSN Id’s tied to the console.

  • @axeblade you can win trophies with multiple accounts check the requirements again

  • Nevermind. I changed the settings to have me as the auto login user ID and rebooted the console. Now the Trophy unlocked. Good FYI for those with the same issue. Also I just noticed there is a trophy description for Brothers in-arms now? Cool.

  • hey nice job with the trophies and in game xmb.
but I really wish you would cut off the “turn off the system” from the users menu on your next firmware, it just doesn’t fit there and I think that usual method is just fine (long press on the playstation button and turn off the system.
and please make an option to not display the time and date, I rely on my watch for that.

thank you and keep on the good job, just try to stay focus on the important things.

  • so far so good, the in-game XMB is an excellent addition. I am really looking forward to have more games that provide trophy support.

  • @1501

Then perhaps they should start charging then if it’d make them keep up with their system a bit better. You also realize that what alot of people are asking for (aside from Voice Chat, Cross-platform invites, and one other feature that I can’t recall) none of this stuff like the in-game XMB have anything to do with the online component of the system. In-game XMB, like the Xbox Guide runs incredibly slowly, in-game music has nothing to do with their online service.

  • thank you guys so much, i have been looking forward to in-game xmb since i started reading about everybody complaning they didnt have it. keep up the good work.

  • my only minor complaint is the clock. I want an option to hide or turn off display or have the clock fade out after a few seconds or something…
    it looks a bit obnoxious.

  • I hope they patch trophies for Call Of Duty 4. I want a reason to play the campaign again. In game XMB is good aswell, but my music isnt working on the games :S.

  • Yes the clock is a bit annoying. I looked at it straight away and thought no its not good there. They could change it to move somewhere like bottom corner i hate it in the top right hand corner.

  • I have a question about the custom soundtracks. Maybe some of you guys can answer but does this replace the music soundtrack in the game or does it just replace all sound in the game (including sound affects) thus making the music the only thing you hear?

  • the should allow us to choose what corner the clock will be everything is clustered at the upper right

  • I dont know how does your custom soundtrack work i cant get it to work which really aggravates me because I hate the music in some of the games.

  • how possible will be in game chatting. as well as friend invite to games. thease are hings that i see in the xbox and the look cool to me. also something like an envelope when we turn on the ps3 that shows that we have menssages. sometimes i dont eiven notice that i have new menssages for days after i received them. for what i had heard the update 2.40 is pretty good because the in game menssage but it will be better if the menssage was a boise menssage.
i will like to see thease in the future.

  • Anyone have any answers to Custom soundtracks?

  • @1507. I wonder if Sony added the turn off console feature under the user section for those with third party remotes that don’t have the PS Button. like the Blue Wave remote? Just a thought. I think the Logitech controllers are missing the PS button as well. I might be wrong on that though.

  • sorry meant @1509

  • While this firmware update is cool. The biggest question on my mind is if the statements made by that german playstation site is true. Is October the month we will get the firmware that makes the 40gb ps3 able to play ps2 games. October is not far off and seeing as all of these updates are completed well in advance to their release You guys should know. Please just give us the yes or no answere instead of the run around. I know this issue is old, but I don’t want to go and buy a ps2 then a couple of months later the update comes out.

  • @1521

They don’t work at all. Well, the guy was playing that PixelJunk game and someone was talking about Super Stardust, but I don’t have either one of those. Every disc-based game that I’ve loaded up doesn’t allow me to play music. Read back in the thread though. A couple ppl. have answered this question.

  • hello eric lempel,

great job with 2.40! the console is keep getting better and better, but there is 1 thing that i find very unplesand!….

release the damn pre-paid system in europe already! i can’t buy nothing online! and it’s not only me having this problem!

sony once said, it’s hard to release a system like that in europe…

but nintendo did it, microsoft did it! why not sony?

i heard something about the many different valuta in europe, making it hard for sony…

release it only in the € euro Territories then!!!

well i hope you will answer this

    greetings,

    maickel hekkers.

  • @1525 thanks and I didnt realize people had answered

  • Dear Mr Lempell
My name is Erick and i’d like to make a suggestion , SONY has always been a brand of cool, serious, elegant and sleak design, this new update is nice…well
this is trivial BUT why can’t we hide the CLOCK or at least that it fades away like the status of the battery, you know to keep it more clean and sexy hope this can be done in the future.

    Saludos desde Mexico

  • AWESOME!!! Will download now…

  • Thanks god 2.40 is finally here…and it works great ..makes my gta expirience 100% better online isnt cumbersome anymore as I can finally talk to the tards that dont have headsets…WOOT!!

I am one happy, stoned gamer….now to get paid and roll a fatty..!!

please force rockstar to make tropies for gta iv and also threaten konami into making trophies for mgs 4….if not I will be slighty irritated because I am not buying that dumbass stardust crap just to use the trophies….

  • Ok I feel like an idiot on a cuple posts ago. I saw the brother in arms trophy for SSHD and thought it was being listed for the new BIA game coming out. Woops. Better drink some more coffee.

  • Yeah, this is great! I can’t wait for Uncharted to update for trophies!!

  • IN GAME CUSTOM MUSIC NOW

no but seriously come on ANSWER us give us a reason why !!!!! i am not kidding !

  • Well, you finally stepped up to the plate. Great work Sony. Thanks for listening to us. It’s a shame it took so long, but I understand that it isn’t easy setting up all the parameters for the trophy support.

Don’t rest on your laurels now, there is still plenty of room for improvement. Bask in the praise for a few days and have a rest, but then start working on some of our other requests.

I for one would like to see improvements to the web browser. Flash support is a must. It would also be great if we could access it via in game XMB (sometimes I get stuck in games, and I have to refer to online guides – call me a pu**y if you will…), but I understand the technical constraints.

Overall, a big thank you to Sony. You guys have steadily improved everything about the system. Think back to Day 1. What a huge difference now!

  • @1530, MidnightBlues

Don’t make me cry, lol stardust is an awesome game, i love it. Than again I would like to thank Sony for fixing the playstation store because the loading is much faster and I think the interface has slightly changed. Good Work :)

  • Yay! It’s finally here! Some suggestions for 2.50 in the order of importance:
    1) In game voice chat (of course)
    2) A feature to auto-shutdown after all downloads are completed
    3) Some decent RSS client that can view/download text, audio, AND video content as well as queue up downloads in the background from RSS feeds
    4) Bravia theater sync / HDMI CEC (not super important, but why not?)
    5) Internet time server support like the psp has (again, not super important but might as well)
    6) Shoutcast/Icecast support

  • Hi JEFF it would be nice if we had an updatable list of the games that will support trophies 4 people lik me who r clueless 2 wat other games will support trophies besides the ones listed

  • I have a question, can you turn trophies “off” in your profile? To be honest it kind of destroys my game fun.

  • @1536

    1) Agreed
    2) Agreed
    3) No need for that at all, the information bar is useless enough
    4) Waste of time and money, honestly. That sync is meant to work with your TV and Sound setup, not your gaming console. It’s completely unrelated.
    5) It already has this. Go to Date & Time settings and change the time setting and it will ask you to do it manually or sync with the Internet. That’s been there forever dude.
    6) [DELETED]. They should rather give us system side music override over the game’s sound.

  • Jeff, I just updated to 2.4 last night.

Why is it every time you hit the PS button, the controller’s battery bar blocks the date and time? You guys should move the clock to the bottom right and put the battery bar to the bottom left and put the little black loader bubble on the top left so that when you friends message you or if they sign in and out, nothing gets blocked or covered.

  • How do you beat the UFO one the 5th phase of the first planet on SSHD?!?!?!?! HELP!!!

  • I just wont the function so that I can go to the XMB in game and send game requests there. also I would like the function to join other peoples game from the XMB in game. Because its so much easier to jump online and join one of your friends games. those features shouldn’t be that hard to implicate. (get on it sony)

How do you beat the UFO one the 5th phase of the first planet on SSHD?!?!?!?! HELP!!!

Wait until it stops shooting and turning around. Hit the blue parts on the ship. Aim and shoot on each until it explodes. After a part explodes the ship will turn around and shoot like crazy, so wait again until it stops and aim for the next part to shoot at. Bombs might do some more power.

  • I am really loving the update guys keep up the good work. Now a suggestion could you include a way to delete mulitple text messages both sent and recieved just like you can do under the video, music & photo section. To be honest it got a lil’ crazy last night & early this morning when the update went live. I thought maybe you guys would have included it but no. So next update can we make this happen. Its a small lil’ tweak. Thanks.

  • Thanks alot Onna =)

  • When is home coming out???Is it still coming out???

  • O yeah another suggestion how about an Auto System Shutoff after for so long unless you are FoldingAtHome.

  • KenLanzJr | July 2nd, 2008 at 10:15 am

    Thanks alot Onna =)

    You’re welcome, good luck ;-)

  • Sorry for the double post, i would just like to add that this the first time i actually wanted to post on this blog. Other times i just looked at just to get information on the next update(2.40) but Sony just made me look like a fool

  • How large will the patches for PS3 games be? Super Stardust had a fairly large patch for just trophies. I also don’t understand why the patch wouldn’t cover trophies along with the ability to play music as shown in the demonstration. So does that mean there’ll be two separate patches going foward?

I double Posted this because I really want these features :)
