Hello again, everyone! Very recently, we demonstrated a major new function enabled in PLAYSTATION 3 firmware v2.40: XMB access in-game. But that’s only part of the story, as the next system software update also introduces the Trophy system to the PS3. This video demonstration shows the system in action.
Super Stardust HD, a PLAYSTATION Network-exclusive released in June 2007, will be the first game to leverage Trophies and will offer a variety of trophies. Trophy support in Super Stardust HD will be available for first-time users who purchase the game soon after firmware v2.40 is released, while those who previously purchased and downloaded the title will be prompted to install a free patch.
PS3 users can expect to see additional games bringing Trophies support to their feature sets through 2008 and beyond, providing even greater opportunity to showcase their accomplishments and compete with friends. The following first-party games are also slated to offer Trophy support:
- BUZZ! Quiz TV
- LittleBigPlanet
- MotorStorm Pacific Rift
- NBA 09 - PS3
- PAIN
- PixelJunk Eden
- Resistance 2
- SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation
- Warhawk
To further emphasize the community aspects of this system software update, the amount of people you can add to your PSN friends list has been doubled, to 100.
The update also adds a mini-control panel that you can use while playing music and an internet search feature powered by Google that allows you to initiate search directly from the XMB (similar to what we added to the PSP recently). In addition, when you’re using the XMB or accessing the XMB from in-game, the current time and date will be displayed in the upper right hand corner. There are a few more minor enhancements included in this update, once the update is live you’ll be able to read about them here.
Firmware v2.40 will become available for download on July 2nd. We hope you enjoy these much-requested features, and look forward to your feedback.

Woah sounds great. Thanks for the date. And finally we will see this.
I wonder what those commentators will have to comment about now that in-game XMB is out. This blog is going to see alot let less traffic. LOL
Thanks guys for delivering a tremendous value in this product. Incredible what a 600 dollar investment has become.

Can we access in-game XMB features while playing a PS2 or PS1 game? Been playing a lot of FFXII lately, would hope I can access some of these features!
Will trophies be mandatory for all games release here on out? That should be required by Sony.

Thank you Sony for listening to the millions of users that have be eagerly waiting for these features. While playing the epic MGS4 it was hard when buddies would send messages or chat invites and now we have the tools to communicate back! Once again Thank you Sony and keep it up. !!!

Good stuff. Time + Google bar = :)
One complaint(which I rarely have), is the whole look of the trophy background. I was hoping for it to be a little…better looking. I know it doesn’t affect functionality but how likely is it that we’ll be able to customize the look?
Thanks for the update!

Great :D. Now how about voice chat during play session? Will it be possible from within XMB when you are playing? A lot of people want to know this so please respond.
Keep up the good work :D

Thanks for posting these videos. The new firmware features look like they’re going to be great!
As Bierbeer (#8) said above, I’d also like to have the ability to view PSN profiles from the PC using a Web browser.

P_tear_griffin | June 30th, 2008 at 5:13 am
BTW, I think this is a good time for late adopters to “jump in” to the PS3 and play beyond

i know this might be an obviuose question or not
but do you have to be online to use the trophioes system?
cause i dont have online through my PS3 since i use sprint so i update using the USB
31
PirateThom | June 30th, 2008 at 5:14 am
That’s Jeff and Eric and everyone else, you guys have nailed this, it’s exactly what I was expecting.
My only question would be, existing games you’ve already unlocked things in, say Uncharted, will the patch automatically allocate unlocked trophies or would you have to do it again? Is there a system like this in place?

Debo2U | June 30th, 2008 at 5:15 am
Great! Can’t wait.
When can we hope to try this out on our own?
Will Gta 4 be a ready at launch title?
Will the 2d trophies in warhawk and pain use there already present trophies? ie the baggies and medals of warhawk?
And why did the developers of pain update/patch their game with a music player before in game xmb?
Will in game Xmb affect pain?
thanks

Hell yes baby. In-Game XMB, Trophies, new Profile system, etc etc. What a great day.
Next up: Cross game invitations, simplified voice chat for in-game XMB use, and an addition to the voice and video chat systems; text chat.
Trying to think of more things we can possibly milk and request from you guys, but this will do for a while… until 09 or so. :P
PS- My personal request would be remove the ‘Copy Multiple’ and ‘Delete Multiple’ options, and instead have it be ‘Select Multiple -> To Copy, To Delete, To Edit Information’
PLEASE! Kudos again.

Of course the update has to come on July 2nd. That’s the day I’m on vacation. I’ve been waiting the whole month of June to find out I’ll have to wait 2 more days. Ah, that’s not that bad and it will be worth it. :)

TheRocker | June 30th, 2008 at 5:21 am
Jeff why is RockBand 2 being released later than the other version? Cant you guys help HMX with the development?
48
cubehouse | June 30th, 2008 at 5:21 am
Two questions:
1. Will MGS4 have trophy support?
2. Will there be an API for web developers to access the PSN data, so gamer cards (like xbox live) can be created?
Thanks,
Awesome blog, you tease and delivered the goods :)
49
tretle | June 30th, 2008 at 5:21 am
Holy s+it :D :P Thanks so much for the videos and release date… Really cool thing to wake up to. Was the psn integration with the forums so they could add these gamer cards to the functionality?
