Firmware (v.2.40) Walkthrough Part 2: Trophies

570 0

Hello again, everyone! Very recently, we demonstrated a major new function enabled in PLAYSTATION 3 firmware v2.40: XMB access in-game. But that’s only part of the story, as the next system software update also introduces the Trophy system to the PS3. This video demonstration shows the system in action.

Super Stardust HD, a PLAYSTATION Network-exclusive released in June 2007, will be the first game to leverage Trophies and will offer a variety of trophies. Trophy support in Super Stardust HD will be available for first-time users who purchase the game soon after firmware v2.40 is released, while those who previously purchased and downloaded the title will be prompted to install a free patch.

PS3 users can expect to see additional games bringing Trophies support to their feature sets through 2008 and beyond, providing even greater opportunity to showcase their accomplishments and compete with friends. The following first-party games are also slated to offer Trophy support:

  • BUZZ! Quiz TV
  • LittleBigPlanet
  • MotorStorm Pacific Rift
  • NBA 09 – PS3
  • PAIN
  • PixelJunk Eden
  • Resistance 2
  • SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation
  • Warhawk

To further emphasize the community aspects of this system software update, the amount of people you can add to your PSN friends list has been doubled, to 100.

The update also adds a mini-control panel that you can use while playing music and an internet search feature powered by Google that allows you to initiate search directly from the XMB (similar to what we added to the PSP recently). In addition, when you’re using the XMB or accessing the XMB from in-game, the current time and date will be displayed in the upper right hand corner. There are a few more minor enhancements included in this update, once the update is live you’ll be able to read about them here.

Firmware v2.40 will become available for download on July 2nd. We hope you enjoy these much-requested features, and look forward to your feedback.

I know this has probably been asked already, but I would like to know directly from you guys. Are trophies going to be retroactive? I really don’t feel like going back through games like GTA IV to 100% it again. I guess that is if GTA IV is going to be supported. If games aren’t going to be retroactively supported can you please make them?

  • wow….literally 99% of everything we consumers have been bittching about since Nov 2006

now i will say this and say this loudly!!

THANK YOU AND GREAT F’EN JOB!!!!!!!!!

took almost 2 yrs but hey we dont live in a perfect world!!

  • @Jeff

Also is there a way for you guys to show red comments on the main blog post so we don’t have to search through an entire post to find them?

  • I know you didn’t list all the games compatible with Trophies, but IF its not planned to be compatible already, can you work some magic and try to get Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune compatible? All i have left is ONE thing left ( Beat the game on crushing ) and i did everything in the game! ( plus its my second favorite PS3 game, next to MGS4 )

  • Took way too long but I’ve very happy to see this will be available in 2 days. Thanks Sony.

  • All good things come in July eh? In-game XMB, E3, more betas, and who knows what else!

  • Sounds awesome very excited…but what other games will have trophies? How long will it take for: MGS4, HEAVENLY SWORD, FOLKLORE, and other great games to get involved?

  • Nice update Eric. Keep up the good work.

    Next on the agenda:
    Cross game voice chat.
    Update/enhance PS3 web brower.
    RSS support.
Unlock RSX for PS3 Linux use.

    :)

  • Forgot to say that I think these two videos made alot of people happy. All thats left is the video store which should be this summer according to Kaz. My friends did not like the PS3 at first at launch, ME included, but you guys did a hell of a job fixing it up. My friends wanted one for a bit now, WITHOUT in game XMB or trophies, now it will be even better!

  • I see many sleepless nights ahead of me trying to get all the trophies I possibly can, if I go crazy from lack of sleep I hope Sony will pay for my medical bills!

  • Finally, i waited a loooong time for this update like everyone els :)

goodjob sony keep up the good work :)

    thank you verry much xD

  • at comment 256: And 4th of July for me, cause we always do BBQ and man do i love my BBQ :P

  • Oh and thanks a bunch for the videos as always great work!!!

  • Great stuff cant wait thx sony keep up the good work.

    TROPHY WHORE THATS ME.

  • Awesome I can’t wait for this update. 2 more days.

  • You are the MAN!!!

  • Thanks! I was scared you guys would wait until e3 to drop this! Wednesday is great!!!

  • looks like a good start.

it seems there’s still a lot of ironing out on this current showing but hopefully release it when it runs smoother and have added few minor things here and there that will make it better than Live.

  • Great update, but we really, really need:
    Cross-game voice chats
    Cross-game invites
A web based profile page like the 360 has

And on a totally different note, I would love to be able to see the “preview” thumbnail for video files on external hard drives plugged into the PS3! Right now they only show up on the internal hard drive…

  • Nice Sony Rocks!!

  • awesome!!!!!

  • Sony still has a lot of issues to fix. They need to tie everything to your username, instead of the MAC address of the PS3. You have no idea how frustrating it is that I have to start my Rock Band save all over again, because I had to send my PS3 in for a repair. Rock Band, Ninja Gaiden, High Velocity Bowling, among others have locked saves, even with a full system back up they wont transfer to another PS3.
On top of that, when you restore your hard drive onto another (or the same) PS3, all of your music files that are in AAC will lose all of their tags and album art. There’s no “Edit multiple” option, so you have to edit every music file one by one.
You have to redownload all of your PSN content, and then activate the PS3 to play them…why can’t you just activate the PS3 to unlock the games instead of having to redownload?
All those games I worked hard on to unlock everything (Uncharted, Ratchet, Metal Gear) you have to play all over again to gain trophies.

  • This is truly great. Glad to see you guys having some good ideas and putting them to use. Hopefully it is everything we ever wanted… Now it’s time for everyone to beg for the next awesome update 0.o

  • Lets hope MGS4 gets some Trophies!

    Nice job. Looks amazing.

  • Don’t neglect Folklore please! I’ll be your best friend!

  • I’ll cut to the chase, why does the profile card look so Mrs. Plain Jane and why can’t we get a snazzier trophy notifier than the equally Mr. Plain Wayne gray box in the corner pocket?

Let’s cut the BS and just admit that this feature is in response to the 360’s achievement system. Fine, I’m okay with that but would it kill you to make give us trophy notices on something more appealing than a big, flat, depressing, charcoal-gray colored box? The 360 achievement notice is unobtrusive, it’s slick, it’s animated and it also tells you which controller (player) unlocked the achievement.

Don’t get me wrong, the trophy feature is AWESOME and I can’t wait to start earning trophies and comparing (that’s a really nice feature) my trophies to my buds but you’ve got to work on the pretty factor. And although I’m a huge fan of minimalism I know when the “less is more” theory does and doesn’t work.

If you want some ideas why not start a contest like “Pimp My Profile Card”. I’ll start designing right now. Just give me a place to upload a JPEG or two and I’m set.

  • I signed up just to say thank you Sony!!!!!!!!!! pleasing your customers is the #1 priority and this is definitely pleasing a lot of people!

  • THIS IS WHY WE LOVE SONY.PS3 WORTH EVERY PENNY,TROPHY’S COULD LOOK A LITTLE BETTER BUT HEY IT FEELS GOOD TO HAVE A PS3 RIGHT NOW.OK EVERYBODY GOT WHAT THEY WANTED(ALMOST AT LEAST)SO CAN I PLEASE GET SOME INFORMATION ON SFII HD TURBO AND WHEN WILL WE BE ABLE TO DOWNLOAD THIS GAME(GET IT 2GETHER CAPCOM).SONY KEEP AT IT…THANKS

  • @ZildjianKX

dude are you kidding me right now??…we ALL have been [DELETED] for almost 2 years to get what we’re all FINALLY getting on July 2nd after almost 2 yrs….and now your gonna start with the “we need cross game chat and invites”

wow dude…i dont even know where to start on that

  • This is awesome. I hope more games make use of the Trophy particularly previously released games like Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, MGS4, GTAIV, Devil May Cry 4, just to name a few.

  • If anyone wants to cry and complain after July 2nd then cry and complain about PS3 upscaling to 1080i or 1080p and not the 720p max resolution SONY and developers are shoving down our throats…if a game does not support 1080i myself and countless others HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO PLAY IN STANDARD 480 DEFINITION

PS3 upscales PS1, PS2, and DVD to 1080i but it cant even upscale its own games…SONY HOW PATHETIC DOES THAT SOUND??????????? and how sad does that make YOU look??

“HD is in our DNA”…yea my ass it is…if it was we’d ALL be playing games in EVERY resolution our TV’s could handle just like your competitors system can do…at least i play all those games in HD resolution

  • Great job guys! Kudos for listening to your customers and putting in these features :D

As a request for a future update, is it possible to add sorting/grouping to files on external USB storage devices? Thanks!

  • i second that tretle! this was awesome news to wake up to. would be sick as hell if the PS3 was capable of playing a blu ray disc and a game stored on the hard drive (ie pixeljunk monsters) at the same time! perhaps future update? LOL no seriously I am sooo pleased with the way 2.4 is shaping up to be.

    peace,
    Lh

  • Great feature!!!!

I hope every single game out there has trophies!

  • Eric, You failed to talk much about Chat. We want to be sure that if we are chatting with a friend, we can seemlessly move from one game to another and back to the home screen without ever leaving a private chat with a friend. Is this going to be possible??

  • Sweet can’t wait

  • Awesome. Nice spin on having ‘Levels’ but do they entitle you to anything by being Lv. 5 or something? Anyways, thanks for giving us a date as well and putting this vid up so quickly :)

  • @258

I’d like to see RSS support added to the PS3 as well.

  • @249

yes but think of this,. chances are this will Go live around Midnight tmw night

  • Wow, you guys really outdid yourselves with this one. Thanks so much for putting in all the hard work. Does anyone know if there will be a list coming out soon for all the games that support the trophy system?

  • Damn! Does this mean I have to through Uncharted again once its patch? If it gets a patch?

  • *sigh*

The complaints are coming in now… Give them a break people, what is BAD about this update? OMG no cross game invites/voice chat! They will add that later on, as they do with everything, lets take in one thing at a time here.

Oh, and people complaining about the look of the new user profiles!? Jesus, we weren’t even SUPPOSED to get that! And it is 100x better then what we previously had, which was basically nothing.

Please stop the bullsh*t people, enjoy this awesome update, and be grateful that a damn company listens to their consumers.

  • Very awesome. Thank you so much for listenin Sony. You guys are the [DELETED]!

  • @ Sentry, Unfortunately, there are whiners that complains abouts everything.

  • First of all I like to thank the psn team for creating that and they could take a break for a while. I want to see in future updates is that when u look at a picture or a video u can see it while playing a game instead of closing it. Also i dont know if fw 2.4 has it or not, but to see multiple peoples trophies at one time and not always compare with urs so ya.

  • God yeah, this is what we’ve been waiting for. It’s actually more than I expected, I was thinking we’d get some scaled down version of the XMB. Thanks and all your hard work won’t go unappreciated.

On another note, can we get a “Continuous Video Playback” setting on the PS3? The PSP has had it for a while and it would make watching the videos I have stored on PS3 that much more pleasant. Also, the ability to create video folders/playlists would be appreciated as well so I can keep things organized.

  • is there going to be Trophies for MGS4 and BF BC

  • time to go beat everything in SSHD…

thanks.. seriously, ive been waiting a long time..

  • Hey! Thanks for another FANTASTIC update!!! Suggestions:

    1. Better on-screen keyboard!!!!!!!!!! (replicate the Danzeff OSK found here: http://pspupdates.qj.net/index.php?pg=49&aid=23876)
    2. Separate auto-play setting for BD/DVD vs. game disc!!!
    3. Ability to reorder downloads in download manager
    4. A system cooldown timer after power off would be nice (system is hot after game play and then the system fans stop blowing after power off direct from in-game)or just a sleep timer
    5. Add video thumbnail feature found on the PSP
    6. All system dialogues should default to “Yes” choice not “No”. And Remove “Delete Completed” dialog.
    7. Ability to easily add files to a folder grouping in XMB… annoying having to type in group title to each individual file
    8. The browser should auto-zoom the text field when entering data. Better flash support & “select” should equal a tabbed interface with bookmarks AND history. Furthermore, triangle should allow for opening of aforementioned “in a new window”.
    9. When your deep in XMB menus (especially on media server directories) holding left should back you out of the menus to the root xmb category and stop there.

Whew! That was long winded! Thanks for the update again and for listening the user community! You’re awesome!
