Hello again, everyone! Very recently, we demonstrated a major new function enabled in PLAYSTATION 3 firmware v2.40: XMB access in-game. But that’s only part of the story, as the next system software update also introduces the Trophy system to the PS3. This video demonstration shows the system in action.
Super Stardust HD, a PLAYSTATION Network-exclusive released in June 2007, will be the first game to leverage Trophies and will offer a variety of trophies. Trophy support in Super Stardust HD will be available for first-time users who purchase the game soon after firmware v2.40 is released, while those who previously purchased and downloaded the title will be prompted to install a free patch.
PS3 users can expect to see additional games bringing Trophies support to their feature sets through 2008 and beyond, providing even greater opportunity to showcase their accomplishments and compete with friends. The following first-party games are also slated to offer Trophy support:
- BUZZ! Quiz TV
- LittleBigPlanet
- MotorStorm Pacific Rift
- NBA 09 – PS3
- PAIN
- PixelJunk Eden
- Resistance 2
- SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation
- Warhawk
To further emphasize the community aspects of this system software update, the amount of people you can add to your PSN friends list has been doubled, to 100.
The update also adds a mini-control panel that you can use while playing music and an internet search feature powered by Google that allows you to initiate search directly from the XMB (similar to what we added to the PSP recently). In addition, when you’re using the XMB or accessing the XMB from in-game, the current time and date will be displayed in the upper right hand corner. There are a few more minor enhancements included in this update, once the update is live you’ll be able to read about them here.
Firmware v2.40 will become available for download on July 2nd. We hope you enjoy these much-requested features, and look forward to your feedback.

I am wondering how the trophies are saved. either on to your hard drive or the server. Because I am going to upgrade my hard drive and i dont know if the trophies will still be on my account if i earn some and then get a new hard drive

Is it too much to expect the same functionality that the Xbox 360 has had for 2.5 years? As a Xbox 360 switcher, the lack of basic functionality that the Xbox 360 has for online gaming is VERY frustrating.
It’s even worse when one of my friends who owns an Xbox 360 asks how PSN is, and I mention to them all the features it doesn’t have.
Being able to keep a dedicated voice connection going with a friend and sending a cross game invite are crucial for easy online gaming with friends.
Here are some questions for you guys at Sony (Jeff, Eric, anyone?), that could use some clarification.

– How will Trophies be tracked? Seeing that trophies tie into new Level system and that involves PSN, does this mean we need to be signed into the PSN to have trophies register into the system? Will trophies be tracked by the consoles user (depending on who you are logged in as), your PSN account, or the game save? Please clarify this, it would be greatly appreciated, as it is of utmost importance to the entire concept behind trophies. ;)
– Are we going to have to play the games again to receive these trophies (for the above reason)? This will have me waiting for games to be patched with trophies, before I even buy them! Also, I have almost all the skill points in R&C Future, assuming those would be transfered into trophies, I will have to go and do all that hard work again? :(
– How will games that already have custom soundtrack support or in-game Friends access, work? Will the game be patched to remove these features entirely and replaced by the official in-game XMB option? Will selecting these options just pull up the XMB (Ex, pressing the option ‘friends list’ in RFOM, would now just bring up the XMB)?

I’m so excited for trophies. One issue I’m already having is that now because of the no retroactive trophies policy, I’m tempted not to play my unsupported games until they become supported. On one hand, you’ll probably get me to finally purchase Super Stardust HD. On the other hand, everything I’ve already bought and all that I’ve accomplished means nothing and is almost stigmatized until it gets its trophy support. I really hope that 1st party games get trophies in place fast and by fast I mean next month or two tops.

Is it possible to post the Firmware on the PC site the same day as the Firmware launch on the PS3. Me being here in India for vacation we don’t have high speed internet for direct download, the PC site is more convenient. So to update it on the PC site also the same day

But I was wondering if it was possible to maybe give the ability to map the media player controls to a controller (ie. 7 – the bluetooth remote). v2.50 maybe?
And me and my wife are wondering if the following is on the roadmap (maybe v3.00) : Currently when my wife wants to beat my score, I have to get out of a game so she can log into her account and start the game. Once she has beaten my score, she has to get out of the game and let me log in.
Isn’t there a way to give one user (the main) full access to an account (access to all PSN functionality ie. messages, store, …) and give other players limited access and assigning them to a controller #. Limited access would then only be for online ranking and trophy purposes.
Please consider this as it may make the PS3 easier to compete between me and my wife on the same machine.
i thought this update and the 2.4 video would of lead to a perfect 5 rating for this blog entry. (4.9 isn’t to bad though)

Yeah dude, I asked the same earlier and I really hope they do so! I don’t even have access to the internet on my PS3, because the connection is too weak for it to pick up. I am out of country, and only have access to the laptops internet connection.
Plus I am leaving from the place I am satying now, on the 5th, and it comes out on the 2nd. Where I am leaving to might not have an internet connection at all! So I want to get my hands on it before I leave (before the 4th). Midnight of the 1st I am guessing, right? So that means it will most likely come out on the 3rd or so.. :(
I HOPE they listen and put it up on their site for DL asap after it is released on the PS3 servers…

It would be cool if the trophies were tied to a video game character. You know how phil in last years e3 got all dressed up in rachet gear. Well if they tied trophies to home in that way making gear available on this tier level i.e. bronze got you the make up for Kratos, silver his dress, gold you get his weapon and platum you get kratos as a design for you to use in home.

2 questions:
1. If you already did the requirements for a trophy before the firmware is released will you get the trophy or will we have to go through all our games again? I have 1000 Medal points on Uncharted, 101% on Burnout, 100% in GTA4 and All Gold on Motorstorm. Will I have to do it all again to get the trophies?
2. What about people that download gamesaves of the internet? Could someone just download a Savefile to get a trophy they don’t deserve?
Please answer these 2 questions.

Well that doesn’t sound TOO bad though. I mean, multiple PSN log ins on one user account would just cause too many errors and mess ups. What would happen to PS Store wallets? Friends lists? Trophies? etc, it would be too complicated to do and not worth it IMO, but signing out of one user and signing into another doesn’t sound THAT bad though.

I hope maybe they will release another update in the future when you can download the latest flash player and other things so we can view videos that we can’t see now in our PS3s
Cool stuff, I just hope more games get patched cause I have over 20 ps3 games right now and I’d love to have a reason to go back to even some of them. I also have over 26 psn games that’d I’d love to have more incentive in playing.

Looks cool, but the game support is pretty week at launch. Certainly something to keep an eye on and I commend you all for finally offering this much requested feature. It will give the “comparison” shoppers one less thing to complain about and hopefully grow the PS3 community. Exciting!

dude anyone that owns BOTH systems knows that pain….i know i do!!
BUT…with this update the PS3 becomes a SERIOUS contender…granted its not literally EVERYTHING the PS3 needs to compete but this is HUGE!!!
to answer your question…NO its not too much to expect more from SONY…BUT in SONY’s defense…after falling like 5 steps behind the 360…with this update they take 4 steps forward…instead of having tons of hurdles to overcome now there are just a few
the PS3 is still the better piece of hardware…it will be for years…its the software edge that the 360 has over the PS3 that SONY needs to overcome
but my point from before was we have ALL wanted these features for over a yr now and we’re FINALLY getting them in 2 days…lets not be [DELETED] and start demanding new features now for the sake of complaining…the cross game chats and invites are not important…for now be thankful that we can actually send msgs and invites without having to end out of a game and re-enter

The PS3 can’t be touched when it comes to “future proof”. The only system that truly gets better with time. Firmware is a HUGE selling point if you ask me. My friends can’t believe that my PS3 can get all these great new things with a simple Firmware download/install.

P.S. I would really like you guys to give us the internet radio on the PS3 like that on the PSP. Just a quick idea there for the future. Thanks.

Yeah I would love Internet Radio on the PS3. I’m always listening to the Comedy Channel on my PSP.

Thanks Jeff and the team for the awesome series of videos. I just have a few more features in the near future that I am sure everyone would like:-
1: Voice chat Channels (similar how XBL allows it).
2: Accessing XMB from videos, be it on HDD or DVDs and Bluray.
This is so cool!

Unfortunately, the upcoming PLAYSTATION 3 trophies will not be backwards compatible wtih your old game saves. If your games get applied with trophy patches, then your going to have to beat your game once more to get the trophies you deserve. Reason being is that you can just go on a site such as GameFAQs and download saves and earn your trophies like that. Smart move Sony.

What about in-movie XMB? That would be useful while watching a Blu Ray title. That way I know who’s online. What if I’m waiting for someone to log on and I don’t know there around because I haven’t turned off the movie. There’s alot more than just in-game XMB. I think Sony is only looking at it from one angle. Let’s do an ALL IN-XMB access everything and anything…

I think Warhawk may be a different story because your awards are saved on the server not on your PS3. So perhaps you won’t need to start fresh and play another 900 hours.
Here’s hoping as I too have hundreds of hours done in Warhawk.
