Firmware (v.2.40) Walkthrough Part 2: Trophies

570 0

Hello again, everyone! Very recently, we demonstrated a major new function enabled in PLAYSTATION 3 firmware v2.40: XMB access in-game. But that’s only part of the story, as the next system software update also introduces the Trophy system to the PS3. This video demonstration shows the system in action.

Super Stardust HD, a PLAYSTATION Network-exclusive released in June 2007, will be the first game to leverage Trophies and will offer a variety of trophies. Trophy support in Super Stardust HD will be available for first-time users who purchase the game soon after firmware v2.40 is released, while those who previously purchased and downloaded the title will be prompted to install a free patch.

PS3 users can expect to see additional games bringing Trophies support to their feature sets through 2008 and beyond, providing even greater opportunity to showcase their accomplishments and compete with friends. The following first-party games are also slated to offer Trophy support:

  • BUZZ! Quiz TV
  • LittleBigPlanet
  • MotorStorm Pacific Rift
  • NBA 09 – PS3
  • PAIN
  • PixelJunk Eden
  • Resistance 2
  • SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation
  • Warhawk

To further emphasize the community aspects of this system software update, the amount of people you can add to your PSN friends list has been doubled, to 100.

The update also adds a mini-control panel that you can use while playing music and an internet search feature powered by Google that allows you to initiate search directly from the XMB (similar to what we added to the PSP recently). In addition, when you’re using the XMB or accessing the XMB from in-game, the current time and date will be displayed in the upper right hand corner. There are a few more minor enhancements included in this update, once the update is live you’ll be able to read about them here.

Firmware v2.40 will become available for download on July 2nd. We hope you enjoy these much-requested features, and look forward to your feedback.

  • So 2.40 sounds awesome, I can’t wait to get my hands on it!

However, I have a question about the Video Download Service, and maybe you can take this down for an FAQ about that, but I was wondering, are you guys planning any support for Video Podcasts?

I’d be in love if I could get my favorite Revision 3 shows in HD format from the official PS3 video service.

  • IGN did an impressions on 2.40, they say you’ll have to re-play games and that it’s not available in PS2/PsOne games. Apparently, it may be accessable in the future for dvd’s/blu ray if there is a demand.

  • Thank you everyone at the US.Playstation Blog!

  • Awesome new guys!

One question though, is there any chance you will be able to see the PSN profiles through a PC or is it going to be solely on the PSN for now?

  • @Horrorist.

I have 1000 Medal points on Uncharted, 101% on Burnout, 100% in GTA4 and All Gold on Motorstorm. No way I’m going back through each one again just to get a trophy.

Hopefully Warhawk will be different because it uses the Servers to save your awards which means people can’t download a savefile for it.

  • Wow, I love the way the Trophy system is shaping up. This is much more interesting than a simple gamerscore in my opinion. I think it’s really going to motivate players to get the most out of their games. Which is always a good thing. Wednesday can’t get here soon enough.

  • Awesome, seems like PSN has finally caught up to Xbox Live.

  • This is great. I can’t wait for this to be finished and ready to go. Lots of new updates and whatnot coming for the PS3, and i have a feeling 2009 is gonna be a great year :]

  • Yesssss. finally, the words I’ve been waiting for- ‘available for download on july 2nd’, thank you. One question, will we earn trophies for what weve already done, e.g. get — of head shots in a game (couldn’t think of anything else) on warhawk or will we have to do it again, don’t mind either way its just less work for me if they are there as soon as the patch is released

  • Great stuff guys. Seems you guys have worked allot to get this out. Looks like the long wait paid off. Just to bad we all weren’t patient. ;-]

  • Actually theres another question, when you say ‘2nd july’ is that just whenever 2nd july is in that country or will it be at midnight pacific time, this is valid for me as I live in England so we have the REAL time

  • Devils_Demon:

your not the only one that will just forget about those trophies, its fun to play again a game but i wont replay 1 years of game just to get a trophies

  • Yeaaaaah!! Can hardly wait!!

  • @Horrorist.
I think Uncharted will be hte only game that I play again as it only took me a week to get 1000 Medal Points the first time plus it’s a really fun game.
As for Burnout, Motorstorm, Resistance & GTA4, screw it. It’ll take too long.

  • Oh the hype!! I’m so hyped for this. All of this awesomeness and it’s FREE!! Thank you, Sony.

  • THANK YOU!

  • Will I be able to check my trophies (and friends’) from within a given game by bringing up the in-game XMB?

    And…

Custom soundtrack. Does it still need to be patched in?

  • I started a poll on the resistance forums asking gamers if they want insomniac to rethink backdating trophy support.

You can find it here http://www.myresistance.net/smf/index.php?topic=72846.0

Get voting if you want resistance 1 and r+c:ftod trophies

  • @TTP (368)

Yes, you can access your trophies ingame.

I don’t think all games support Ingame Music. They might need a patch.

  • Can’t wait for Trophies! Might go through some games again if I havn’t played them in a while.

Will DMC4 allow you to have trophies based on the accomplishments you’ve unlocked? I would of thought that to be true as it’s a system message and not an in-game one that tells you you’ve accomplished something.
This is if they patch it to allow trophies anyway.

  • This is a question that I’ve had for awhile now, and now that I see the Google search in there, how come the RSS Feed feature isn’t on the PS3? that or skype? because I know a lot of gamers(including myself) who would like these features on their system.

  • It would be REALLY sweet if you could go to xmb and take a snapshot of the game running and be able to use it as a wallpaper. Say your running GT5 Prologue and during the replay you see an insane angle of your car you could just go to xmb->save as pic and use it later. This update is incredibly useful thanks!!

  • Yeah I would love a Screenshot function too. Even more I want a Recording feature where we can hit the PS button during play and press on Record in the Game Tab and the PS3 records your gameplay and saves it to the HDD. You can then upload it to Youtube later.

That is what I really want in the future.

  • The Trophy system is so much more robust than I expected, this is amazing. Now please just tell me that our trophies will already be unlocked if we have met the conditions previously, so I don’t have to play SSDHD for another 1,000 hours.

  • I love the trophy system. MAKE MGS4 TROPHY COMPATIBLE NOW!!!

  • Oh, and since you’re gathering feedback, cross game voice chat is all that’s left to add to make the PSN 100% perfect. As it stands though, FW 2.4 is an incredible improvement, I can’t wait to get it installed

  • For those of you that are clueless, you should check mark all of the supported display resolutions as for each game picks automatically the best one for fit.

  • hi how do u get the new update?? Do u go to ” system update ” or ” playstation store ” ?????? And when can u get it??. Im in the u.k or does that not matter???

  • If any Sony official reads this, read this well.

I just read that Trophies won’t support older saves. What’s up with that? Sure people can download saves but the original save is LINKED to the system it started on, so why not make it scan for it?

I’m really close to finishing MGS4 with all iPod songs, all weapons, and all emblems. I’m missing one emblem which is easy to get, so please, have a heart, and don’t make me do that again.

  • Finally PSN is cathing up to Xbox live. Especially considering its free! However the one more thing I think is needed is a better commpatibility with ipods. I know I can connect it but it isnt user friendly and I think it could be made alot better.
e.g. being able to connect your ipod ingame and then controlling it through the ipod not the ps3, and to update the ps3 with new music youve added instead of looking through it all or overwriting everything so the new music is there.

  • I am wondering how the trophies are saved. either on to your hard drive or the server. Because I am going to upgrade my hard drive and i don’t know if the trophies will still be on my account if i earn some and then get a new hard drive

  • @Jeff

Here is a question to answer. Trophies won’t be unlocked based on what you have on your hard drive for games will it? I hope not, from reading people can transfer game saves to the PS3 and that will open it up to cheating. I much rather replay the games and earn them then having it opened up and anyone with game saves get the trophies for nothing.

My other question is what security features are in place to keep the trophy system secure (If you can disclose that a simple there is some in place will suffice). That is one problem the other console has with people cheating the system so the top people are ones using game saves.

  • As always the world will be a little bit happier for some insignificant news, ehhh what am I thinking of, maybe it was that Spain won Euro 2008, whatever it was this is out of this world WOOOOO!!

  • This is really cool. its like a Ps3 RPG leveling up. i know lots of people who are gonna get addicted to this haha

  • Amazing! Can’t wait. I know, it’s 2 days away, but still.

  • >>>”Hey everyone, we know you’ve got a lot of questions about FW 2.40. Know that we’re gathering your questions”<<<

    well, first off:
In the video is seemed, that you can manually disable any Game-BGM to not interfere with your custom music and the Updates are just for that the Games do that automatically (and stop the custom music in Cutscenes etc.). From the ign 2.4-Review, they say there will be NO Game to support Custom-Music on the 2.4 release-day from start, is that true?

    2. Will the PS-Store (check for Demos etc.) and the Browser (gamefaqs, UT3-mods etc.) work ingame, too? if not, than you have something for future work ;) (and btw. pressure Adope a bit to release a new Flashplayer for anything besides PC ^^)

    3. just to let you know: The PSN-Profiles have allways shown the User’s spoken Languages, thats nothing new.

    4. Not directly 2.4 related: Please give more specific behind-the-scenes infos. Not allways the “enhances ps3-title playback” with minor Updates. The last ones allowed the Youtube-API in PS3-Games and the PSN-Friendlist supports now 100 instead of 50 People.

    5. You bring the whole XMB into games, but (of course) only a few Options of it are available without quitting the Game, how many more may be functional by futur Firmware-Updates?

    6. Will copy-protected Savegames and/or Online-Games with their own cheat-free Statserver allow to get the trophys from the start or do you have to earn them (again) from Scratch like in every other PS3/PSN Game now?

    7. I Think i will have suggestions to specific Features of ingame XMB, but I will wait till i can test it out soon (btw. 2nd July… which time/timezone?). Like if Music over Media-Server ist supported, if you can copy pictures to usb devices (would makes sense, I want to export my Screenshots to PC/Internet without leaving the Game)

    8. Personally, I don’t quit like the google search added. I can understand that google “likes” it ;) but still is not really usefull with the Browser in Mind (Session-Saver, Homepage, Favorites) just to be sure not to overload the XMB with icons.

    9. Is Cross-Game-Audiochat available? it is from the screens but it will probably just display the leave-game-message, right? If that’s so, will it be added in the “near” Future?

    10. I can understand why many Gamers want an Achievement-like System, I hoped the Trophys would bring a bit more to It. Is there any kind of reward planned? For example Points to buy some virtual furniture in Home (or even a free $ for the PSN-Store with each Level gained xD )

    That’s for the Moment. ^^
P.S.: sry for my english, I’m not a native speaker.

  • I think, in regards to the trophy system, they have to make you play through the game again to make it fair (IGN gave a good reason for this: It’s too easy for someone to copy someone else’s save onto your system and “cheat” the system to get trophies). I understand that one. If you REALLY want to earn them, you have to play the game (replay value upped some. I’ll go back and play Heavenly Sword again if it ends up supporting trophies).

Now, as far as my questions: One major title is in question: Metal Gear Solid 4. I read Konami was twisting Sony’s arm to get trophy support in the PS3, and every assumption as to why was for MGS4. Wondering if anyone in Sony knows if Konami had already included support for such in MGS4 or not. Also, the custom soundtracks as it pertains to stuff like Snake’s iPod in MGS4. Are we going to be able to add stuff to his iPod selection from this update or was this already enabled like it was in MLB08? Would we be able to, say, give CAW wrestlers their own entrance themes in a WWE game through the custom soundtracks, or would that be software enabled, as well?

  • @384

the exact problem with doing it via saves, Sony, just don’t. Its simple, no one likes a cheat and if this were possible then I think my hype levels would plumet, just dont. Another thing, DONT DO A WARHAWK, remeber back when that was released and everything saved on the servers went completely wrong, except for me obviously and while I was at the lowest rank my mates were at rank 10

  • Hey Jeff/Eric/entire PSBlog,

Thanks for all the great updates and keeping us well informed. Can you guys please just clear up the whole Custom soundtrack matter? from what press people are saying it will require patches, but then someone with a devkit a neogaf says there is a “Force” option, where you can play music over top any game no matter what. If it’s that simple, do we have that feature in 2.4? Is there any plans to implement this feature into the FW/in-game XMB? If there is some stability issues with this or any part of the update that it’s lacking, just let us know that you’re working on it! Thanks again.

Also, can you view your friends/your own trophies from in-game XMB or does that require to close the game?

  • Sounds good! I see a bunch of people complaining over at another forum, and they’re complaining about how few titles will have them. Are the titles you listed the only ones that will have them? Or just the only ones confirmed so far?

  • I am wondering how the trophies are saved. either on to your hard drive or the server. Because I am going to upgrade my hard drive and i don’t know if the trophies will still be on my account if i earn some and then get a new hard drive.

  • Any plans to implement the trophy system with PSP games?

Will there be a PSN gamercard (similar to XBOX Live gamercard)?

What other third-party titles that will include trophies? (e.g. CoD4, Assassin’s Creed, GTA 4, DMC4, etc)

  • I really hope Sony will make a list of not only firt-party titles, but also third party ones that support Trophies. I’d be very surprised/disappointed if Burnout Paradise and Assassin’s Creed didn’t support it.

  • oh forgot nr. 11:

What kind of dimensions are we talking about regarding Updates for Trophys and ingame-Music.
Besides this very, very small List, do you have any Info about what percentage of PS3 Titles will add it via Patch and how many of the new Titles will have it on board (especially Third-Party). Also, do u have any Idea how long it will take for the majority of Titles to implement that stuff? It would be kinda frustating to have finally 2.4 but u can’t use most of the new Features.

and now i think of Nr. 12:
    Please include Ingame-XMB to PS1(Disk-Version), PS2-Titels and DVD/BD-Movies!
btw.: encourage more Movie Studios besides Sony Pictures to build in these little Thumbnails+Name of the Movie into BDs like when you insert a PS3-Game-Disk. Also with ingame-XMB for movies, let the PSN-Profil online while watching (and maybe even show the Name of the current Blu-ray-Disk you watch, thought that would be up to the movie studios again)

  • I know sony did something right, cause Ign was impressed and impressing them is like walking a tight rope over a wilderness of razor baldes.

  • @392,

in-Game messaging will be supported by many of the PS3 titles currently out, as well as titles coming in the pipeline. However, in-game custom soundtracks will NOT be supported by ANY of the games at the launch of 2.40, but patches for existing games may be made, and many future games will support it. Sony isn’t mandating custom soundtracks.

  • Sweet stuff!! I can’t wait!

  • @ZildjianKX

very simple…I own an original 60gb PS3 from launch…with version 1.0…at the time was complete garbage…i was let down so terribly from the launch that i went and purchased a 360 to satisfy my gaming needs and for awhile it did and still does to this day, cuz at least THOSE games play in 1080…but bottom line…when the PS3 launched is was already behind big time…and has been inching forward and i mean really inching…no big leaps to try and catch up with the 360 and believe me i complained and complained and complained until eventually i was banned…oops did that slip out…LOL…anyway with fw 2.40 i and certainly MANY others can now sit back and enjoy a way better (like i mentioned before not a perfect) system…but what i’ve come to grips with is the fact that the PS3 is a PS3…NOT a 360!!!!…if people want the PS3 to be exactly like a 360 then go buy a 360 and if you own a 360 then just go play that!!

i will enjoy a PS3 with NECESSARY features like ingame xmb…NOT becuz the 360 has it…but becuz now i can invite friends to games without having to end out of the game and re-enter…competition is great and all but when you compare the 360 and PS3 your comparing apples to oranges…I may not agree with the way SONY does things or how decisions are rationalized but i dont have to…i own both systems and if i dont like certain specs of a multiplatform game on the PS3 then i’ll go buy it for the 360 and vice versa…COD4 is a helluva lot better on 360 then PS3…but Rock Band is a helluva lot better on PS3 then 360…

not to type a novel i’ll stop there…basically in a nutshell what the PS3 doesnt give me the 360 does and what the 360 doesnt give me the PS3 does….so i really dont have to complain about anything anymore :)
